Well, after noticing silence for a month now, I finally figured it was time to bump the tourney and ask if the participants are still participating. :p
If not, no problemo, I will simply ask Cattleya or Thyiad to change the tournament listing to tourney ended :p

Yep, still here, and I will continue soon. I have two assassins in Act II Nightmare at the moment (one in this tourney), and that class is one of only two I have left for my SPF tourney septavirate. But I have been focusing on SUTC4 and No-Vita tourney as of late.

Awesome work Grisu! And good to see an update again. I actually thought about this tourney when contemplating the rules for the emperor's clothes... Imagine my surprise when I see it suddenly appear again on page 1 of the forum 😁 And that IS a pretty impressive drop, that tigulated mail...

Not much, I´m afraid. If I open the character in ATMA I see that the Tainted Sun quest is done (but the Palace WP is not activated), so I guess Maryam has made it through the Claw Viper Temple in NM.

The little D2 time I have is focused on SUTC4 and Green with Envy, but I really do want to see how far I can go here as well. Ahh, so much to do, so little time.

Here we are again!

Shockfrosted made it to the Pandaemonium Fortress. Yes, that means 6 superunique drops and one boss drop for me to use. Yay! The Council in Travincal proved easier as I assumed - even on players 7. What gave me some NDEs though were those nasty dolls that spawned all over the place in Durance 1. And yeah - of course exactly there occured the phenomenon of the "invisible mercenary" :badteeth:

Anyways, Mephisto himself was easy - unlike the council pack in Durance 3: Lightning+Fire Enchanted and Conviciton Aura...no melee for me there. So I switched to the Bow, had an escape TP opened, let my merc tank for about 5 seconds (hey, sometimes he lasted even 10 seconds!), went back to town for healing. Repeat.

Most of Act 3 I did on players 3, except for Travincal and Durance 3 (players 7), since these were the only places where bounty mobs could spawn for me. (yes, I even did Mephisto on players 7:))

Ah - Act IV ... I love it :) The only Act in NM which I did completely on players 8. Was lucky - didn't get any Burning Souls :)

Took some hours to clean all areas till the RoF WP, because my resists were crappy (-5/16/1/50). So I decided to make some nice improvements in the equipment section. As you may remember, Normal Ventar the Unholy dropped a Shael for me, and one of the Council SUs dropped Tal and Tir. So I was hoping for an Um from NM HF, but I "only" got a Pul.

Disaster in the Durance! Maryam got stuck (literally) in a situation she had NO business in. Merc fighting Dolls, with one of my Meteors and several of surrounding Dark Lords´Meteors coming down on the very spot I was standing in. So I knew I had to take some Doll explosions. I panicked and drank 5/6 of my stock of full rejuves. Overkill by far. This drinking reflex sure is bad for my ambitions of stocking up on purples... Thankfully, I had some regular-sized gems in my stash. I used up Emeralds to cube three full purples. Gotta have at least one column of them.

Otherwise, the fighting in the Durance was not hard and me clearing out the monsters took less than half the time than normal (because I was at full gold carrying capacity and had a good stock of potions, so drops were meaningless).

Then came the fight with Mephisto, my nemesis in two SPF tournies (granted, those were the Hell version). After a short skirmish where Mizan died, I used the moat trick. Spending 8 full blues and a couple of minutes, I got Mephy almost down to half life with Crushflange-BFing.

As you may know, Maryam uses an Ancient´s Pledge Large Shield. This means the base shield blocking is bad. I decided early that I would be better off pumping vitality like crazy instead of trying to maintain a high block percentage. I thought my 915 life, maxed PS (with maxed fire synergy) and a merc with HF aura would make the fight easy. I was dead wrong.

These three things in combination were bad news for Maryam:
* 20% blocking
* My unwillingness to drink rejuves because I have so few
* No Life Tap, meaning the merc could only take a few hits even if I gave him red potions like there was no tomorrow. Which meant that Maryam often had to step in and take some serious damage (Mephisto hit with 80% of the attacks, you know)

Three NDEs, and about 250k spent on merc resurrections and potions, but I did make it. Yay!

I seriously need the personalization quest now, so I can give my rare Balanced Knives with Life Tap charges SU-status (and thereby, be allowed to use them). Life Tap, plus a MAJOR weapon upgrade for the merc is the hope I cling to for future big fights. Maryam won´t be able to tank much, not even if she reaches 1200 life. I can probably take down NM Diablo with some fancy footwork, but the fights with Ancients and Baal (even here in NM) scare me.

And Maryam has another serious problem. Neglecting DEX has made her attack rating really bad. About 1200 with PS, and a meager 496 with Attack. Maybe I should start using Dragon Flight from post-blank range to release charges? (it has the biggest AR bonus of my kicks)

Oh well, I am still alive and that´s what counts. :D

Good progress for Maryam. She is about to go up against NM Ancients.

Act 4 was not bad, bountymob-wise. Spawners on Outer Steppes, then Plains of Despair was more like Plains of Hope for Maryam, with both spawners and willowisps. Several gems she could collect dropped here. She also found a Nef rune, and I could finally craft her +2 DEX gloves into something better:

Act 5 has been some lean times. I knew it was probably going to be (no zombies can spawn anywhere, as far as I know) but I think it was bad luck seeing no Crush Beasts other than Thresh Socket. Except him, the only bountymob monsters I have fought are vultures on Frozen Tundra.
(btw, Thresh dropped two useless rare weapons. That´s OK, I have SU/wildcard items in all those slots already. Good thing he did not drop a useless 2-row belt or something like that!)

I found a Gem Shrine somewhere in Nilly´s areas, and I decided to upgrade an amethyst and try to do something about the bad Attack Rating. The rare sword has had an empty socket for far too long...

Nihlathak has been defeated, and Maryam can now use those rare Balanced Knives with Life Tap charges (because personalized items get wildcard status). I hope that will help the merc tank the Ancients long enough for Crushflange´s CB to work them down. At least enough so I can fight them without needing rejuves (or very few).

Claws of Thunder is now at level 17. If I survive until Hell, I will max it (first time I´ve done that).

Maryam is now a Conqueror!

For some reason, I was lucky enough to separate the Ancients with simple running almost right away. Talic was first up. No problems for Mizan to tank when he had Life Tap to help him. Then the Teleporting Madawc had no chance either. Finally, FE Korlic was also not hard for Mizan to tank with LT help. Blade Fury with Crushflange ruled on the Summit.

My WSK draws were not too tough. The second level had willowisps, and I could collect some amulets (all crap, though) and a sweet Amber charm.

Baal also got the BF/CB treatment.

In the cow level, I lost two full rejuves. One out of necessity (Maryam was almost surrounded, and got severely beat on when she tried to flee) and one because I clicked the '4' button by mistake. :rolleyes: To minimize the loss from this kind of mistakes in the future, I now keep a small rejuve in the first slot in that column.

In Hell, I will wear my MF items only when I fight in areas with trophymob monsters (and only when I think it´s reasonably safe). The resist penalty in Hell made me create a customized resist armor (see below). What I ask of Corpsefire and Dark Elder is to not drop an armor, because then I can not wear the armor I just made! (I do have a couple of gems from NM Andariel (Emerald, chipped ruby/diamond) that I could use to create a customized wildcard armor to use instead, but since I only have a 2s armor available, that would be much worse than what I wear now...)

Act V was quite a surprise this time. Last time, I had no trophy mobs whatsoever, this time there appeared Fallens, Megademons and Sabre Cats...not that they dropped anything useful, mind you.

That doesn't mean that I only had bad drops. For example, I had this unique Ancient Shield drop, and this unique Gothic Bow, and that unique Skull Cap, a unique Francisca, a set Grand Crown, a set Basinet (ah, that would have been awesome...), a Lum rune and a Skin of the Vipermagi.

Too bad I am not allowed to use any of these...BUT, these things made up what I am missing in those finds above:

All in all, Act V did take quite some time. Wide areas, lot of annoying monsters (those pesky gremlins...) for melee characters...well, what else? The Ancients were a piece of cake - 2 spawned with Spectral Hit, 1 was Cold enchanted (CBF from Rhyme came in handy 😁)
What was annyoing like hell were those spitter critter in Nihlatak's temple and the Glacial Trail (or Crystalline Passage? I don't remember...). How are they called? Spike Fiend or something like that? Even with Iratha's Collar, which I did use back then, it was a pain in the you-know-where.

I had one NDE in the Drifter Cavern, when I was attacked by Tainteds and Dolls and my keyboard didn't react anymore...I thought "wait...I took a potion, why had it no effect"...pressed "1" again...still no effect, tried to hit Esc to see what was wrong...nothing. Panicked, I hit Esc on my laptop keyboard rather than on the external keyboard and - voilà - there was the Esc screen. Life was somewhere below-what's-good-for-HC-play, so I tried some things until my keyboard worked again and resumed game while immediately gulpin a Rejuv...survived the situation, but it was a close call.

Nihlatak wasn't as bad as I assumed - he had only around 10 spawns in his room, so once I had most of them lured out, I simply went in and went directly for Nihlatak, who didn't last long, while my merc took the CE blasts :) Good moron :)

What was actually pretty nasty in the throne room was the 2nd wave. I lured all the skellies outside the throne room so that they couldn't be revived and then went in for the Mummies. Unfortunately, they were extra strong and my merc kept dying and dying, and without him my AR wasn't too good...lots of money lost here.

Baal's minions were taken one by one, no problem here. Baal himself took some minutes on /p7, but I never came into trouble.

I think your gear is outclassing mine ("Gee, here is a Shael rune I must use the first chance I get. Man, that is going to be tough." Sheesh...). The only really cool things I have (with very useful abilities) are my two personalized weapons.

Nice circlet! Ral is a good idea, since you would be "wasting" the lightning part of the Scintillating Jewel anyway (at least with current gear). On the other hand, that awesome jewel should really be used before there is just a little of the game left. Well, unless you allow yourself to use the item with other characters.


I should probably cube myself a nice resist ring or two. The problem is, I have no topaz of any kind right now, and the Garnet ring recipe requires an Exploding Potion, which is almost impossible to find this late when one is not allowed to pick up Exploding Shrine drops...

I have played a couple of areas in Hell. It was very difficult, especially since I took everything except The Cave at /p3. It was probably too ambitious, but there were tempting zombies everywhere. OK, not on the Cold Plains, but I left it at /p3 there so all zombies in the Burial Grounds would be spawned at that setting.

Over these areas, I lost over 500k gold. I now have around 1.5 million left. So either I quickly need to become a lot better at keeping Mizan alive, or I need to take extended periods where I play without a merc. But many bosses hurt so much if I fight them by myself, because of my crappy blocking (and with the merc around, they are much less scary because of HF chilling). I have become better at playing without losing Mizan. I use Life Tap liberally (which also costs a fair bit, but just around 1000 gold per charge - that´s equal to what I get for selling two Super Mana Potions) and Mind Blast + CoS works pretty well. Too bad the monsters only stay converted for 6-10 seconds. Often that is not enough for me to go in and score my required two hits to bring down a Meteor. Yes, I whiff a LOT.

How is Shockfrosted´s crowd control? Any plans to get Conversion, or to pump Smite more? Playing No-Vita Tero taught me how good these skills are if you invest heavily in them.

Anyway, Corpsefire dropped two crappy magical polearms (Poleaxe, War Scythe) so no armor slot got "cursed".

Maryam had some scary incidents. I think the early archer pack with Might in Cave level 2 was the worst. But since I was on /p1, one good Meteor (two quick hits over the merc´s shoulder when he had Life Tap help) and some MB stunning was all it took to kill the boss. I could Cloak the minions most of the time, so they were almost not in the fight until later, when Might was gone.

I fought two LE + CE + Cursed bosses in the Mausoleum, one skeleton and one zombie. Merc died both times. Blade Fury with Crushflange did them in. Took a long time, but thankfully I hit them often enough for the Knockback to trigger and keep them away from me so I could avoid most the nasty bolts (plus I had Fade to reduce the pain). My Anthrax charm (6 seconds poison duration) is immensely useful here, because it often goes 4-5 seconds between my hits. It´damn hard for clvl 76 Maryam to hit a level ** boss when her AR is around 600...

Haven't thought about the crowd control skills, but yeah - come to think of it: it would have been a good idea, esp. in the Cow level. That one was driving me nuts:crazyeyes: Took around 3 hours to clear the whole level.

But yeah, I think pumping Conversion now is a little bit late (fisrt 1pt in Vengeance, then Conversion...I think I only get about 12 skill points max till Baal (if I get so far...). Smite might be a good idea actually, although it's a shame that Holy Shock doesn't apply to Smite. But you might just have given me another idea to go with this build...you know, up till now, my crowd control was: progress only a few steps, spot monsters, turn around on your heels and run away, fight them one by one (or 1 on 2 till a maximum of 1 on 4 depending on monster...).

About the gear: I was relly lucky when it came to imbuing and crafting, as well as to Rune drops and the necessary jewel/gem drops. Turned out that Fallens in Act I are really common, and reanimated Hordes are superb - you can kill the twice or even thrice sometimes, increasing your experience and item drops even more. So now that I've wasted around 4 jewels and PGems for crafting, I really am out of ammunition, so to say. I can cube some more PGems if required, but only have a Jewel of Envy and that tremendous +20 Life/+14 Resist All jewel left...don't want to cube those :rolleyes:

Is CoS and Mind Blast enough for your crowd control? I thought about making a Nadir Helm for the CoS charges, but really don't know if I would be able to use it (is a personalised item counted as a "wildcard" or as a "SU drop" - meaning: do I have to equip it or am I allowed to equip it?)

What about your AR? You said it's hard to hit bosses...I didn't dare to switch mercs because of it...would you rather have a BA merc now or do you prefer your HF one?

About the merc thingy: yeah, I will have to try to keep him alive, too. The Malice on him is incredible, esp. vs. bosses/SUs. Also, as already mentioned, my chance to hit somehow sucks without him :p

Well, good luck and don't expect me to be too competitive - the next 4 weeks I will have enough to handle in RL. But I'll try my best!

EDIT: Speaking of dumb luck... unfortunately it came from a corpse and not a Fallen :(

From my experience, Conversion started to become really useful/user friendly around level 5...but I was running Fanaticism and had a really fast weapon so I could usually attack 3 times in the short time span when I could reach the monster and before it could hit me. What you could do otherwise is hit with Smite, then Conversion on the stunned monster.

Right, Smite does not work with the elemental auras. I guess it´s tricker when you need to both keep monsters in check and deal damage to them (my Pally was mostly a tank for his rogue merc - he was not the one dishing out the major damage). On the other hand, you have Goblin Toe and CB works with Smite.

In post #92 you can see the oficial ruling (yes the rules are very spread out and changed a few times). It gets SU status (sorry if I mislead you in my updates), so it can be interchanged only with other SU items and wildcard items.

HF is preferred right now, mostly for his own survival. He gets more chances to heal himself against a Life Tapped boss (and longer time to allow the healing potions I feed him all the time to work) between the hard hits from a boss (pack). If Andariel drops a big hurty stick, things may change (there is life steal on Stealskull). Something like this is what I want:

Maryam struggles on. Well, her progress is manageable, but her economy is going downhill and I am worried about the future. Only 1.02 million left now, and no trophy monsters to loot until Catacombs level 3.

A merc resurrection costs around 44000. That is a LOT of potions and gold piles I need to find in order to make up for one resurrection. It´s not that I have played bad, it´s just that there were so many dangerous bosses! I tried to play a while without the merc. That worked OK, but I did not face anything that would have been dangerous for the merc anyway. Then I ran into a goat boss that was very dangerous for Maryam, but would be pretty easy to tank for the merc, so I brought him back again...
Maybe I should switch to a Cold Iron Wolf? They tend to survive a lot better that the desert guards.

This nasty lady is responsible for three merc deaths. Multishot Holy Shock Spectral Hit. Mizan had just died when I took the picture, and the flames Maryam managed to produce when the merc tanked were enough to kill the boss. Maryam ran circles around the boss to avoid the arrows.

Other than a few rejuves, no exciting finds from the zombies. Most interesting was a crappy amulet. I sacrificed my Coral ammy to cube amulets 3->1. The resulting ring was complete junk.

Last fight today was rereshingly relaxed and non-dangerous.
