If you are coming from v1.07, then check your stashes for a magical sceptre of some sort with skill levels in Holy Shield. In v1.07 sceptres could have holy shield on them.
You can get up to +3 to holy shield from a v1.07 sceptre so keep it in your weapon swap. Beauty of this is that Holy shield isn't a "one point wonder" really as you have to buy all the pre req skills as well. One point in vengeance synergy skills isn't worth much, but five of them is.
Also, surprised nobody has mentioned guardian angel. This armor adds Plus one pally skills but also increases your chance to block as well and is a very good armor for avengers as it is less dexterity needed to get a high block chance and as you have realised, an avenger does not need high dex for attack rating.
