It's been a while since this thread has been updated, but I actually acquired a 1.09 grailer - running Hell Mephy for a non-eth TGod's, he instead dropped me about 4 Baranar's Stars, then a unique Crusader Bow - my first 1.09 Eaglehorn.

Ohhhh nice! I haven't been playing the most, but have been trying to get my zon caught up in levels. Those mid 20's are a pain as I can not find a good bow to go either way yet. I tried the pgem bow and was not the most successful with it. Maybe it's just a little too slow for me? I'm not sure. But, I can't wait to get up there to use some of the nicer bows I have found. No eaglehorn, buriza, or WF yet... But it's better than a 1.09 RC in 1.09.

Self rushing is slow going running the multiple clients, but the cow runs are a nice help. If only I had net at home so I could do more rushing/running and cows to get my zon caught up. My sorc is sitting around 45 with the level 29-33 gear: peasant crown, viper, suicide branch, wall of boneless, etc. Hoping for the occy some time soon and whatever else I can get. Happy hunting and GL on that barb project.

If you don't like waiting for the 6pEmerald bow, try a full Arctic set until the Skystrike becomes available. IIRC, it's got a nice set-bonus damage much like the Death's set. Have you tried a Zephyr?

I remember (in 1.09) I once traded a stormshield and 12 sojs for an Eaglehorn, but they switched in a Cliffkiller instead. It welcomed me to bnet trading. So I never got to use one in 1.09, and as you already know bowzons are much harder after 1.09 when I finally found one.

wow :shocked: That's how BNet rolls, huh? Glad I went down the SP path from the start - much less irritating. That's how much one of these bows went for, huh? Seems mighty expensive given the comparative effectiveness of a much cheaper Buriza.

Yeah, it's very nice, but it's not THE bow. In and of itself, it doesn't merit a new, dedicated character. But if a WF does eventually fall, I will have the ultimate bow progression for a Strafer. I will definitely keep this in 1.09.

That's rough! :) I was also scammed like that but only with shako. I was trading an um rune for shako (early ladder) and the guy switched to cap socketed with chipped emerald at the last minute :) I was aware of something like that happening but the guy asked me some questions so I was just impatient to get my shako and pressed trade without checking one last time :)

There were a lot of SoJs that time, because they had been relatively easy to gamble in classic before and there was no uberdiablo-soj-sink yet :) I remember that at some time 5 pskulls = 1 SoJ.

Well, anyway, I've started playing 1.09 after a long pause. I decided to roll a barbarian and I've been enjoying him this far. He's at lvl 47 in NM act 2. I've enjoyed twinking him and it's been a smooth sailing thus far. I only want to use 2h mauls, though, and I don't know if my steeldriver is good enough to finish NM with (I could get to lvl 76 for IK maul running nm baal runs). But I'm crafting for exceptional hitpower mauls and have had a couple of near misses (ias, ed, fools mod, but with lvl req 82, for example).

I think what I've learned from your 2H Maul WW Barb is that... they really made that build more viable in 1.10+. Unless you're willing to use a Larzuk on a Bloodtree Stump, it sounds like you're pretty much going to have to deal with a slow whirl through NM.

I think you won't be able to get away from the high level requirements on your crafts - I've found the level requirements on all of my crafts to be significantly higher than the level requirements on corresponding mods on rares.

My 1.09 v 1.13 Barb project is progressing nicely. The 1.09 Barb is mowing down the baddies faster than the 1.13 barb (gogo 1.09 bugged Masteries), but the jury is still out just how he will stack up to the crazy overpowered 1.13 runewords with his 1.07 crafted weapons when all is said and done.

I'm going to join the 1.07 gang today once I get Trenshadow up and running. Just a quick question before I get started: do I need to rebuild new chars for each version - that is, are chars specific to a patch, or, and can they be swapped back and forth between 1.07 and 1.13c?

edit: turns out it's a moot point as I don't have the discs!

I've been running 1.09 Mephy for another TGod's for a while now, but I do pick up potentially interesting rares. Last night, he dropped what may be an endgame-worthy ThrowBarb weapon (as you know, The Scalper is the only unique throwing axe in 1.09) - what do you think?

BTW, I've been asked a couple of time for builds I think are good for tackling 1.09, especially untwinked. I'm thinking about making a post about it, but I've only made the following in 1.09, and only the first untwinked:

Can folks let me know what builds they've played, and what amount of success you've had with those builds?

Here's some thoughts I'd like feedback from the 1.09 gang on:

I'm thinking, for an untwinked character in 1.09, a Barb is hard to beat due to the CS bug in the masteries and the fact that you can make your own endgame weapons using chipped gems and shopped swords and he runs Mephy so well. A Zon is super strong once you have a Buriza, but good bows don't come along until a little bit into the game (though a self-made emerald bow would probably do pretty well with something like Multi-shot). A Pally has really good cheap runewords available that work with Scepters (King's Grace and Holy Thunder) and Crown Shields (Rhyme) that will work well into the game. A Sorc is a classic option but are quite underpowered and fragile until FO becomes available at level 30, and are very dependent on a merc that is able to tank for her (and mercs in 1.09 are fragile compared to their 1.10+ counterparts).

I don't think a Druid is a good untwinked option because of the special weapon requirements and lack of a good PI solution (Elemental Druids are famously weak). Sins are just too buggy and underpowered in the patch, and Necros are a challenge even twinked to the nines.

What do you think - what would you pitch as a good build suggestion for a first-time 1.09er?

I'd have to agree with the barb for the first one. As you mentioned, all the others have some kind of downfall that the barb can make up for. Sorcs do become easy after FO, but getting there is a whole different issue. Druids can hold a fair amount of life and feral rage can keep you leeching as long as you want, but the attack speeds back then always seemed a little off and the damage was never as good as a WW or frenzy barb. They held the speed and damage over the druids unless you had some really, really nice gear on your wolf.

Paladins always seemed to run into a similar issue then. Zeal+fanat could get you hitting at those crazy frame rates but the damage was really low. If you managed to load on a decent amount of crushing blow then you might start getting somewhere. But since there are no synergies the paladin does usually have some options for skills. 1 pt zeal with +skills gets you your needed 5 hits, add to it for a little AR if you need it. Max fanat and holy shield, even though holy shield sucks compared to 1.10+. You could double up and choose to max shock or freeze for PI's or quite possibly a higher damage output depending on weapon and number of +skills. Still might be tough to beat the speed of fanat+zeal especially when coupled with CB.

Necros are way too weak, even when twinked to the teeth like you said. Elemental druids were non-existent then. One of my first classes was a sin and I got her to hell, albeit with some help here and there on bnet. the crowd control skills were nice, I liked the wake of fire trap but I don't remember just how strong it was in cow runs. I don't remember exactly how the mastery bug worked on them, but finding strong claws and dealing out the damage was a little tougher. Even full Nat's set or dual bartucs were tough to make a really strong sin out of. Zon's don't have good enough bows to start off with and have the same issue as a sorc with getting LF so late. And even then it's a crowd only skill and not quite as effective while questing and act running.

So I'll have to side with you RobbyD and say barb for starts. If you can get yourself to NM meph and find a peasant crown, skin, frosties, silkweave, and suicide branch or spectral shard then you've got yourself one hell of a sorc ready to go.

If I had to give the specifics, I'd say WW barb, one or two swords (depending on what you can find) maxed WW, sword mastery, BO, extra points in iron skin (always active), shout (for merc and you), battle cry (1 should do with +skills and a good barb helm), 1 in zerk for the PI's, Leap Attack (pre-req) for moat jumping and Iron Maiden, Hork ~5-10 if you are going to run pindle like it's no one's business. If you're not a WW kind of player then Frenzy works out great but then you have to find two good ones, or at least two complementary ones. I went with a strength (IIRC) axe and whatever good mace/sword I could find up through NM. That cheap 25% cb on the axe was amazing. tir+el, pff that'll drop by act 3 for sure with something worthy to put it in by then as well.

Thanks for the analysis, cheermeupkid10. The Barb (especially a dual wielder) has 3 major challenges - MSLE, Fetish Dolls, and IM in the CS, but 2 of those can be solved somehow.

I have to say my last character, the WW Barb, is my strongest of the bunch by a good bit. As an example, I'm currently running Nilly with him to try to get a level 98 charm to roll for Pestilent of Inertia - no other character of mine is hardy enough to try that (though he is using bR0k3n 1.07 gear like the 23% life leech ring and the crafted swords).

Speaking of which, he does Pindle before going down into the halls, and lo and behold, he scared up a grailer (well, actually the merc did) from one of the guys from Pindle's court.

fetish dolls are a killer for any melee character though so that's something everyone has to deal with. Doesn't using Battle Cry drop that damage some from their CE effect? IM can be beaten by the leap attack bug since it's considered a "ranged attack" then and thus not receiving the reverse damage. The MSLE's are also a problem for any character, but especially a melee attacker or anyone getting in close. Can be beaten by finding a t-gods(late game) or keeping up with resists using nat res and charms/gear.

I think I'm going to reboot my D2 tonight and get some mf runs in with my baba or lvl up my sorc or zon. Ohhhh how I've missed playing this summer.

I've never tried Battle Cry with Fetish Dolls - usually I just try to get the merc to deal with them. That was one easy part of going through with the Necro - those dolls never got close to him. I know the exploding suicide turtles from Act 5 can be blocked - I think Fetish Doll death explosions can too - that's why I pointed out that the dual-wielding Barb needs to be especially careful since he's all offense.

I haven't really tried using Leap Attack to aviode IM, but I do know that before I knew how to sove MSLE with absorb, I would use Leap Attack on MSLE bosses to get the knock-back and delayed sparks (gives him time to get out of the way). The way I deal with IM is Zerk - or just runing around the Doom Knights to get next to the OKs to get Decrep'd instead of IM'd.

BTW - current project - after learning for WoRG how the alvls v ilvls work on small charms (will I ever stop learning things about this game??), I've started running Baal and Nilly (well, only my WW Barb runs Nilly) for level 95 and 98 small charms cuz I wantz me a Pestilent SC. I'm loading characters with Flawless gems before running and have cubed up a TON of pgems. Of course, nary a SC has dropped from either target, but I've gotten some good XP and Baal dropped my second Arkaine's Valor (screenie to come).

Oh, and the upkeep on those 1.07 crafted swords drove me to do something silly - I popped sockets in the Echoing switch swords (since Aleksandr horks on that switch) and loaded them up with Lem runes. It has actually helped quite a bit, but I find myself horking more that I usually do.

So i started playing 1.09d Singleplayer from Scratch. I used to have a powerful 95 sorc or something like that with close to perfect MF gear years back but all that gone since i formated pc ages ago.

Anyways i started to build the common Frozen Orb/Nova Sorc
here's a tiny log of what has happend to the char:
2011-10-16 Started up a sorc Frozen Orb/Nova/static field.
Act 3, Found a Nagel 26% MF from a corpse in Act 2 level 18
2011-10-17 Normal Cleared level 46, made a Stealth leather armor then found a Ghost armor and made it to a Stealth.
Found Nokozan Relic from Eldricht.
Gambled Chainboots with 35% MF
Found a amu with 29% MF
Gambled a circled with 30% MF
2011-10-18 Started to level to 49. Then went on with rushing through NM at players 3.
Found a orb with 2+ cold skills +2 frozen orb some +mana and 20% FCR PRO 26 Psn Resist.
Gambled a rare circlet with +1 Sorc Skill and 16 all res some ED and 6 minimum damage. PRO
Bought a new Defensive Holy Freeze Merc.
Found a Offensive Pala Skiller in Act 3.
Currently doing mephiruns for some decent gear at players 1.
Gambled rare boots with 30% FRW and 35% Cold res Half Freeze Duration etc.
Found a Hel rune /cry where is my Shael Rune?
Just as i wrote that 1 of the 3 council looking creatures in durance of hate lvl 3 dropped a shael :D.
Found a All resistance 14 Jewel Pro.
Found Eth Hot Spurs Noo :p.
Found a Nagel 25% mf.
Found another Nokozan Relic :(.
Found Tearhaunch but obviously ETH why am i so lucky of getting ETH items?:P
Found a SC 5% mf 8% Fire resist too bad it wasn't 7% mf ;)
Found Mosers Yay Resist shield for hell now i just need to make 2 P.diamonds.
Found Magefist!
.... found a torch of Iro... 1:10990 there is no justice... Oculus ~1:2500
Right now I am level 55 and I'm stopping MFhunting on mephi NM for a while to clear NM and level to 70 to progress on Hell.

You got a Torch of Iro with your first character??? That's my one gap in my Normal/Exceptional grail, and has not dropped in 2 years of playing the patch (but was one of the first uniques to drop for my first 1.13 character) :steam: :banghead:

Congrats, though, especially on that Moser's! Those eth Hotspurs are epic!

Since you have a Nova Sorc, I highly suggest aiming for a Wizzy/Skin/Lidless switch and crafting a caster ammy for some Countess running if you want some runes. I found Countess likes to drop Occys and Tal's Orbs when I ran her for Vex.

Keep in mind that the Occy won't 'port you in 1.09d due to broken CtC.

I do know the occulus is broken(afaik i think it was intended due to all the whining of it being annoying). And no im not aiming for Wizzy or Skin. I have nova for one soulpurpose to kill things that are immune to cold and cow level OFC.

My aim gear looks like this
Head: Shako PT
Armor: Eth Skulders(200%?) pt.(Tals armor if it ever drops with PT)
Weapon: Oculus 15 All res Jewel
Shield: Lidless Um
Amu: Tals Amu or a 2+ Skill MF amu.
Gloves: Chanceguards 40%
Belt: Goldwrap(tal belt for 3set bonus if i get armor)
Boots: WT 50%
Rings: 30% Nagels or 40% blue MF rings(i used to have a ring with 25% mf 15 All res on my old sorc if i can get that i would use it ;))

I cleared NM now level 59 got to get a few levels to start on Hell, im resistance capped on everything but fire which is like 59 or something. my merc is like 5 levels behind and resistance capped for NM.

Shako, Skullder's, Occy, Lidless, etc. should drop reasonably soon, especially if you're running Mephy/Countess. Tal's is extremely rare in 1.09 and you basically need to be trolling Hell Act 5 to get one (mine fell in the AW). It can't be racked because racks are capped at lvl 75 in 1.09.

However, if you are aiming to use Nova with cows, I recommend to get to the 105 FCR bp or pop a Rhyme Hyperion or a Stormshield (mineable from Hell Mephy) on and use Occy + Skin and a caster ammy to hit the 63 FCR bp with some protection. You need the Mana from Frosties (and an SOJ or 2 if you can find them) to keep Nova going - that skill requires a fat blue bulb (though I don't recommend pumping Energy - Serpent's charms are much better sources of mana).

its a MF char i don't see the point of using frostburn or any other things im only going to cow till im like level 80 then im going to mf mephi until i find my desired gear and then pindle/eldricht/shenk and possible baal. No point in farming countess for gear when mephi is faster and drops better only reason i would run countess is to actually get 2(or 6) ist to socket a Ali baba/6s Crystal sword :p runes are useless in 1.09 there are no good runewords at all apart from rhyme. and i have already a rhyme Bone shield.(will get a Superior Grim shield later on if i manage to find that)
