ø Old Gods of Chaos Tournament ø

Damn, that's a lot of effort for a tournament! Good work!

First of all, I'll most likely enter, once I've asked couple of questions and figuring out my cultist:

1. For Ouroboros, there's this: "All neutral & bear Shapeshifting". What are the Neutral skills in this part? Lycanthropy? Is a skill like Hunger a neutral one as it can be used by both Bear and Wolf?

2. Let's assume I go with Ouroboros and pick Fleshcrafting as one of my talents. Does that open up all the shape shifting skills, thus with that combo, can I play as a wolf?

3. Might be a stupid one (or that I missed it), but you can put skill points to other skills than what is given to you by your god? I mean, if I go with Ouroboros (and Lycanthropy is neutral shape shifting skill), I can put one point in Werewolf to get access to Lycanthropy, as far as I don't use Werewolf?

(Yes, I would like to play as a wolf...)

Thanks!

Another question: what qualifies a skill to be a 'magic' skill? Are these just the damaging skills that deal magic damage? Or are any of the buffing/summoning skills considered 'magic'? I think it makes more sense if the first is correct, as there are other ways of getting the latter skills.

Edit: I'm probably also an idiot, but since my God allows me to wear items that have MF, that means I can socket helms/armor with topazes and use them, yes?

@Vildecor Yes Magic in this case refers to the skills doing magic damage. And yes you can manipulate items to give them mods that you can use, so socketing helms/armor with topazes is a good way to make them usable. Just like Els can help you for Light Radius.

@Neksja Thanks!
1) Yes by Neutral Shapeshifting I mean usable by both. I could have been more clear with this.
2) Yes. Ouroboros enable some of them and your talent enables the rest.
3) Yes. You can put points into what you want, however you can only use what is permitted.
Also consider what described by the all character section:
"+ Cultist may put points into any of their passives & synergies of their class.
(Synergies can't be used themselves if not permitted by their God & talents).
+ Cultists may use any skills permitted by their God & talents, either from their skill-tree, charges or gained from items."
This mean that, for example, if you want to make a Shapeshifting Druid, you can use Fire Claws and boost all its synergies if you want (but you can't "cast" the synergies)

I hope that no one is surprised that I join my own tournament.

I was really tempted to start with a Jörmungandr Cultist but there's some things I want to mess with, and Jörmungandr could be a fine second God if I happen to fail.

Thus, I will serve Pherydimox, who doesn't mind my confused state of mind.

Perturbator
Paladin (Vengeance Auradin)
Bloodbond
Boon
Prismatic Obsessive Thoughts
Specialist

All the buff/debuff/crowd control provided by my God should be helpful. Also, like you Vildecor I'll start with something unusual (for me at least). Hopefully it works and I can follow with my Assassin and Necromancer ideas for Pherydimox.

Wow, what a cool idea for a tournament! I'm still sifting through everything, but I have a few questions.

 • For the god Thoth, does the no +light radius rule disqualify the other items he does allow, just items from talents, or both/neither?
 • For items that are allowed by color, does that also apply to charms with a color-associated affix (from tables you linked)?
 • Do "black" items also include "dark gray" from using less than perfect skulls in sockets?
 • I was wondering why the Shadows (at least the Warrior) weren't included in the Construct talent.

Again, a great idea. I plan on joining once I figure out which god to worship.

Wow, what a cool idea for a tournament!
Thanks! For your questions:
 • For the god Thoth, does the no +light radius rule disqualify the other items he does allow, just items from talents, or both/neither?
Yes it disqualify any items. Luckily, none of his runewords have + light radius (Gloom & Smoke have -3 and -1 light radius respectively, which is fine for Thoth).
 • For items that are allowed by color, does that also apply to charms with a color-associated affix (from tables you linked)?
I wouldn't count the charms for this since they aren't colored by their affix/suffix.
 • Do "black" items also include "dark gray" from using less than perfect skulls in sockets?
Yes. We can be somewhat loose with the colors. All shades of black would be fine here. Just like for Chimaera I've included all the various colors that the affix/suffix can give to an item, but any blue/red/orange/purple unique or set item is perfectly fine since it respect the colors identity.
 • I was wondering why the Shadows (at least the Warrior) weren't included in the Construct talent.
The Construct talent is thematically mostly for "physical" construct. Golems and Revives are created from material. The Amazon clone isn't properly explained anywhere, but since it doesn't attack I've added it as a sort of puppet of the Amazon. Shadow Warrior and Master are the Assassin's own projection (as explained on Arreat) and so I left them out since they are basically the Assassin herself. Only the Cultists of Thoth can truly master the Shadows.

Thanks for the clarifications. Here's another question that popped into my mind while going through the options, although it will be a while before it's an issue. What are the rules for upgrading items using the cube?

For example, Thoth allows any Ghost Armor.
Let's say we finally find and use a great piece of Ghost Armor but want to upgrade it to Dusk Shroud if we get the runes. Would that be allowed since it's the same item Thoth originally approved, but only upgraded?
On the other hand, I'm assuming that it would be ok if we found and stashed some Quilted Armor and then upgraded it so it would then meet Thoth's standards to use.

Oh, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I really like your formatting of the rules (both here & your Cyber Punk tourney). The graphics are cool & add some flare.

Oh my, the upgrading recipe. I didn't consider this. However, has you explained, it makes sense to allow upgraded items that were originally allowed by the God, and so I will add that case to my original post. However don't put any Els in there or Thoth will forbid it!

And yes upgrading a Quilted to Ghost would make it usable, just like socketing an item with a skull would make it usable for Thoth.

I'm glad you like the formatting and images!

Edit: Here's what I added:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Additional information:
+ Cube upgrading recipes:
If an item allowed by your God or talent is upgraded with the Cube recipes (ex: 1 Ral Rune + 1 Sol Rune + 1 Perfect Emerald + Normal Unique Weapon = Exceptional Version of Weapon) the new item will be allowed as-well.
For example, you may upgrade Xiu-Matesh Demonhide allowed equipment to their elite version and still wear them.
So, I have only recently started playing D2 again (been playing D3 since its release). I figured this tournament would be a good one to start with since an early death won't be a complete setback (being able to bequeath my items to those who follow me).
I think I have decided to follow the ways of Ullr and all his Glory.
Gunvor
Assassin (Phoenix/Kicker)
Fleshcrafting (for "Blood" items)
Boon
Charm Expert
@Mezion Is there a reason Boots aren't included in the ethereal items Ullr allows (hoping it's just an oversight)?
It is an oversight, I'll add them right away. And gl! I do love kickers so I can't wait to see how this turns out. With the Boon talent you should be good enough to grab a bunch of stuff from the Shadow Disciplines skills, good choice.
@mwille Good luck with the assassin! I was very tempted to choose Ullr as well.
@Mezion Yeah, my poor paladin made it to the Black Marsh before he realized he could use topazes for the MF. At least the first unique I got afterwards was a TC3.
This is pretty hilarious, I'm lv26, yet I just got the hell out of Tal's Tomb. Duriel just slashed me real good, enough that I had to empty all my potions without being able to damage him beyond ~10%. I cant even get near him haha.
(edit: I'll make a proper update post but its 4am so better sleep first)
I shall be starting either today, or tomorrow, but here's my cultist details:
Class: Druid
God: Ouroboros
Talents: Fleshcrafting, Charm Expert and Specialist
I'm starting with hopefully an easier build, basic Fury druid, aiming to take full advantage of Fleshcrafting and the access to Blood crafts. Especially Gloves, Belt and Weapon. Might need to park him at Countess in Nightmare for a looooong time to get enough of Ort runes (for Blood Weapon craft) and then figure out if I want to go 2-hander (Feral Axe) or 1-hander and Rhyme shield. I guess I'll be getting a bit ahead of myself and I should just get a start on Lycaon.
Good luck everyone, all the best, may the best God win.
I think Ullr may have been a little pissed that Gunvor was even considering worshiping another god. When first entering the Cold Plains he threw a LE Spearwoman pack at her as a test of her worthiness. It was a close call, but she finally defeated them after draining her belt of potions & drinking from inventory.
By the time she got to the stone circle, she was much better prepared for Rakinishu (who went down rather easily). Even the big guys guarding the Tree of Inifus were slain with well placed kicks. However, the next test came while rescuing Cain. Gunvor took on Griswold & a Fanaticism Goatman pack all at once. Luckily she managed to keep from getting cursed until after the aura was vanquished.
She ended her night by tracking down the Countess, who was defeated without a problem. Ullr must have finally been satisfied with Gunvor's devotion as he saw fit to reward her by dropping a Tal rune. Gunvor thanked Ullr for all the tests he had put her through. After all, there can only be Glory through a good battle.
@Mezion Is Dragon Flight considered melee since we have to be next to the enemy to actually kick it, or ranged since it is targeted from a distance?
Last edited:
Yes since you end the skill with a melee hit. Also I love when we get a LE right away in cold plain on /p8, always a oh shit moment
Progress:
Alright so like I said, I am "stuck" at duriel for now till I upgrade my defense some more. Not sure what I was thinking starting with a melee char that can only use Vengeance, mmm, would have worked a lot better with the Fractured One for this particular build but whatever, I'll fix it.
The build is popular with all the girls
Which mean that I had to get some help from a shrine to defeat the extra fast ones I encountered in Cold Plains.
Flesh Cloud the Cold (Fire enchanted?). Lovely name, just imagine that, a cloud of flesh comming at you. This is some Lovecraftian dream right there.
Andariel was "fine". She completely ignored my merc which is new. Really popular with all the girls.
I'm not counting the imbue yet since I'm waiting for the reward.
Okay okay I'm in too. It'll be slow going as I'm still very much enjoying my Cyberpunk character, but I must pledge my allegiance to Malstrom.
I will also be going off the wall in terms of that God's preferences a bit with my first choice and choose a Hunter/Summoner Druid. Should be interesting without access to a might merc...
I have several hours of time tonight and I expect to make it well into Act 5. Currently farming Travincal in the hopes of farming a perfect amethyst so I can finally use an amulet.
A couple of notes:
Triumphant Rings are relatively rare, and neither of the ones I have spawned suffixes. Such a shame.
I still plan to use Maleficium so I can have life tap on swap, but I may change that to Preparation for more gear choices. I'll make the choice tonight
I think that for act 4, I'll probably use an ancient's pledge on swap for the needed resistances. I don't think I'll have any weapons to use with it though. Can 4os scepters spawn at this level? Holy Thunder has fire damage and is such an option
@Dazliare - IIRC normal difficulty has a cap at 3 sockets. The only exception may be cows, though I think the restriction applies to them as well (even though their mlvl is high enough for a couple types to spawn with 4).
I'm almost positive it can drop in cows. I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that's where I farmed my Rift base for my Rift assassin
