Matriarch Mara Jade the Warrior Monk

I was looking through the build compendium for a second build to use Last Wish on and found JanusJones’ (henceforth JJ) Warrior Monk. It is a Hybrid Blade Fury/Dragon Talon build with points left over for whatever you want. He also aims the build for taking on the Ubers and not simply questing through the game. In addition, the build needs some changes since it was written for 1.10+ and doesn’t reflect the D2R changes to Blade Fury.

While not the fastest killer, this is a powerful build that is extremely hard to kill and can take on anything in the game. I also made some decisions that lowered the damage that she could do

In looking for a name, all the Warrior Monks I could find were men. However, I found a reference to the Jedi. So, I looked up female Jedi and I found a reference to Mara Jade who started out as an assassin for the emperor, then a Jedi master and in one version married Luke. With that sort of pedigree Mara Jade, it was.

I’d already done a Bladesin, Ono, and I want to make Mara significantly different. Ono used no martial art skills, had a Shadow Master, and some points in Venom so that’s three differences. I also decided to use as little as possible of the same gear. The gear decision left me undecided on what to use and unlike most of my builds I ended up not deciding on the end gear before playing and as a result did more experimenting than I usually do.

After some thought and input from drmalawi and PhineasB I decided on changes to the original build. JJ calls for maxing Venom and Shadow Master, I’ll put zero points in them. This saves 40+ points that I can use on maxing Blade Fury and Blade Shield. JJ also dumps 1 to 20 points into both Fade and Cloak of Shadows, though he intends high Fade for the Ubers and high cloak for PvP. I only put 2 points in cloak and 5 in Fade.

JJ is all in on Crushing Blow for this build, but there is a caveat. When using Dragon Talon, you get the expected 1/4 life or 1/8 life for Super Unique monsters and Bosses. However, Blade Fury is a ranged attack, so the damage is half of what you expect. Thus, the use of Blade Talon for the super unique and bosses.

JJ says no other traps, but Ono had points left over and I found a few points in Death Sentry helped Ono. However, as JJ points out Redemption from Phoenix and Death Sentry compete for corpses. With two potent attacks I didn’t see the need for Death Sentry. Therefore, rather than putting points into Death Sentry I went with Lightning Sentry as it does more lightning damage and you get 10 shots instead of 5 from it. It also served as an early warning device as I moved through some areas.

Ono used a Cold Rogue with Wrath. I’ve done the dualling Decrepify/Life Tap both from Wrath and an Act 5 Merc wielding Lawbringer and Last Wish. It works but can get frustrating waiting for decrepify to spawn when you need it. I decided to stay with the Cold Rogue but equip her with Faith. This means I don’t need Burst of speed to max the Dragon Talon frame rate. I also can get Fade from Last Wish and decided that with skills I wouldn’t go higher on Fade than level 11.

This left how to handle PIs. Ono tried Grimmershred and Tiamat’s rebuke and they really weren’t effective. However, Ono used axes and didn’t have the dexterity to wield swords. Mara uses Last Wish in a phase blade, which allowed me to put Lawbringer on switch. She started using Lawbringer at level 43 in a Dimensional Blade and quickly got used to Decrepify and Cloak of Shadow competing.

Lawbringer works so well on the Undead that in areas where there are a lot of skeletons and other undead it was hard deciding which was better Last Wish/Phoenix or Lawbringer/Spirit. It also helped that before being able to equip Faith that the Rogue used an Insight Bow.

None of the final weapons or the Phoenix shield have Mana leach. With Redemption the question was, do I even need to worry about Mana? The answer is yes. You need a source of mana for Blade Fury as its cost escalates with the skill level (4 per Shuriken at level 25). I found even with Redemption it was possible to empty her mana bulb, but the real issue came when switching to Lawbringer. Also, Phoenix isn’t available to level 65. I was having trouble maintaining Mana in normal Act 2 even with 5% Mana leach from a Manald Heal ring. I solved the problem via an Insight bow on the Merc and except for a short test of a Harmony Bow kept an Insight Bow on the Merc till she could wield Faith.

In hind sight, I would have been better off when I knew that I would be relying on Lawbringer to switch back to the Insight bow or even only using Faith when I was certain that I would be using Dragon Talon.

Trying Delerium answered a question I had about Cloak of Shadows. Confuse and Cloak of Shadows do overwrite each other. This means that Cloak of Shadows will also overwrite Life Tap from Last Wish. I did this mainly to try the +2 to skills and hesitated to have a third curse competing with Lawbringer’s Decrepify and Cloak of Shadows. It turned out that the three worked well together. Cloak and Decrepify get cast from Mara while Confuse got cast from the point that the shuriken hit a monster. It worked especially well when Confuse went off when Mara was outside the range that the monsters could detect her.

Confuse from Delerium is level 18 and has a range of 15.3 yards and a duration of 44 Seconds while at the present time my Cloak of Shadows is level 4 with a range of 20 yards and a duration of only 11 seconds. I know this to be the case as I can find monster that are still Confused after Cloak of Shadows has worn off.

I got so used to the set up that I wore Delerium till level 79. In Hell, I found it more likely to get included by the mob of confused monsters and got a little tired of turning into a Bone Fetish and not being able to use either Blade Fury or Dragon Talon. Though the final realization that Delerium wasn’t right for Mara came with the Ancients in Nightmare when she got mobbed by the three and turned into a Bone Fetish. It took me a second or two to realize I had and I decided to try and survive as a bone fetish and then she turned back into an Assassin and just kicked the crap out of the Ancients one at a time.

As a result of the Ancients battle, I checked out the Amazon Basin on Delerium and found out that all auras and active curses still apply when the Delerium curse goes off and that while you can’t do anything to break the curse the curse itself can change you back if it goes off when you are a Bone Fetish. Another point that was mentioned was that even when a Bone Fetish the Rogue still fires her bow.

Plus 6 in prerequisites and 3 points to get Dragon Wing.

Point allocation wasn’t good. I didn’t max Blade Sentinal till late in Act 4 Hell. I also probably should not have put 20 points in Lightning Sentry, though it made taking out the Minion waves very easy. Finally, I wasted 4 other points since I never used Dragon wing and should have only put one point in Cloak of Shadows

Started with a couple of rare claws..

Death’s gloves and belt. At level 21 added Milabrega’s Shield and War Scepter. At level 23 switched the scepter for the Crown to maintain the +50 life on the Shield. Tried the Death’s sword for the 3 pieces, but I had a rare sword that was better. Level 25 played with the Cow King’s set and pieces from the Death and Milabrega’s sets and somehow lost the rare sword so now I have the full Cow King’s and Death’s sets. At level 27, I made Honor in an eth Dimensional blade. It has a durability of 11, but Blade Fury doesn’t give up any durability. Also, put an Insight bow on the Merc and no more chugging blue pots.

At level 31 I equipped Moser’s shield, but then switched to a Rhyme shield and then equipped String of ears for Death’s sash.

Have rescued Anya and after clearing the Frozen River and Crystalline Passage she is now at level 42. Decided to clear the Glacial Trail before going after Nihlathak. A strange map for both the Crystalline Passage and the Glacial trail as the waypoints are way inside the map while the door to the next level is very close to the entry point. It is shorter to start from the Arreat Plateau waypoint to get to the Frozen Tundra than from the Glacial Trail waypoint.

Tried both Lawbringer and Voice of Reason in the Glacial Trail. They are both in Dimensional Blades and Lawbringer has a higher LCS damage without Decrepify. Of course, the LCS doesn’t show the Frozen Orb damage. The Frozen Orb is cast from the tip of the sword and travels much slower than the shuriken. As a result, the original target is frequently destroyed by the time the Orb gets there. If it isn’t, it is when the Orb gets there or if there is another target behind the original than it gets destroyed by the Orb.

I’m going to use Lawbringer in a Divine Scepter (slightly faster weapon, damage, and Sanctuary level) for now for any PI and eventually will switch it out for a Phase Blade version.

Reached level 47 in Level 1 of the WSK. Time to pull the Cow King’s set and replace it with Vampire Gaze, Duress Armor, and Gore Riders. It wasn’t that they needed to be replaced. The real reason for the switch was to change out the Insight Bow for Harmony and get a feel for not having unlimited mana. As hideous as it is I went with Vampire Gaze to get more Life and especially Mana leach. The result is that I can no longer just sit and spam shuriken into space, but if I can hit a leachable target, she is good to go. Insight made things easier and I quickly switched back until I could equip Faith

With Baal’s death she reached level 49. Blade Fury made Normal very easy.

Nightmare picks up where Normal ended and things still die quickly. Once I maxed Blade Fury and 1 point in Blade Shield, I’ve been putting points into Dragon Talon and maxed it at level 51. Decided to do some experimenting. At level 50 I switched to a Crescent Moon amulet for the Mana Leach and switched the Vampire Gaze back to a Lore circlet. At Level 52 I switched the Lore Circlet for a Delerium Crown.
Reached level 53 in the catacombs and killed Andariel with Dragon Talon. Not sure how many kicks it took, but the life bulb never dipped.
Act 2 in the sewers and switched back to the Insight Bow as it’s some much easier with all the skeletons. Not even a near death in the whole Act. I really like the Cloak of Shadows/Confuse/Decrepify mix. Cast Cloak if necessary and start taking them down. Confuse with get cast and then the fun begins as the monsters start to fight and forget all about Mara. The Decrepify gets cast in a narrow area and they get even easier to take down. Meanwhile in other areas monsters are still confused and leaving Mara alone. I never had any problems entering one of the rooms. I even watched monsters continue to fight with each other after decrepify had been cast.
Somewhere between levels 54 and 59 I finally switched out the Death gloves for Lava Gout and added three skillers; one for traps, Shadows and Martial Arts.
Used Dragon Talon a few times, basically so I wouldn’t forget that I have it. I did use it to take Duriel out.
Lawbringer was working so well I totally forgot to bring the Death axe that Ono used as her final weapon.
Finished Act 2 about half way through level 60.
Now in Act 3 time to make a few more changes. Strength is finally at 156 so time to equip a Spirit Monarch. Also try the Ono’s Death axe and a BKWB. Moser’s with the jewels I put in does a little more damage than the Spirit, but then I lose the +2 to skills. Also switched to a Crescent Moon amulet for the Mana leach.
Hit level 63 on the causeway to Travincal and time for some upgrades. Laying of Hands replaces Lava Gout.
Reached level 65 in the Plains of Despair, but waited till I had cleared the City of the Damned to equip Last Wish, Phoenix and Faith. The Death/Phoenix combo does more damage than the Last Wish/Phoenix combo. Without Insight on the Merc the mana bulb does now drop when you don’t hit a target, but it fills rapidly when you do. The mana cost per blade at level 28 is 4 3/8.
At level 66

The CS was just one short blood bath. Started Diablo with BF and when he got close enough switched to Dragon Talon. Her life bulb did dip slightly, but just enough to be noticeable.
The first PI showed up in the Arreat plateau. Took down all the monster around it and then switched to Lawbringer and it did take a few shots to kill it. Frozen River was full of Gloams, but not an issue since lightning resistance was 90% between Fade, Thundergod’s Vigor and Phoenix.
The Ancients went down on the first visit. I really like Confuse from Delerium, but it isn’t a good choice for the Ancients. I was only able to get a few Shuriken off before the three of them rushed and surrounded us and then Mara ended up getting changed into a Bone Fetish. I just kept attacking and then she got changed back and Mara started kicking and all three went down in short order.
The WSK, the Minion Wave and Baal were no issues.

You mean dragon tail, not Dragon Wing?

Hard to see that lightning sentry could do any meaningful damage except helping out a bit against physical immunes here and there, maxing blade sentinel / fade would be a greater investment?

That second point in cloak, any reason? I kinda love/hate that skill, I hate that there you kinda have count for yourself when its duration is gone so you can recast it. So, I tend to just point one point into it.

I don't remember when or why I put the second point in Cloak and I pretty sure I had not intended to do so. I usually only use it at the beginning of a fight against a large mob and that is especially true with this build since Life Tap quickly overwrites Cloak so there is no reason to increase Cloak's duration.

The only reason I put points in Dragon Claw and Dragon Tail was to be able to use Dragon Wing. Since I never used Dragon Wing all three points were wasted.

I tried to keep Fade always on for the DR and the resists, but since Last Wish has a 10% chance to cast a Level 11 Fade my level 15 was usually overwritten when I got in contact with a mob. So, more than 5 wouldn't have been that effective.

I decided that I didn't want to rely on Death Sentry to kill things and as a result put the points into Lightning Sentry, 10 shots instead of 5. I used LS mostly as an early warning as I quested and the only time I can remember it actually doing any major damage was against the Minion Waves were it was very effective. I agree that putting even 10 more points into Blade Sentinel would have been more effective.

If I were to respect her I would put zero into Lightning Sentry and instead max Blade Sentinel and 6 in Venom.
