Congrats on your Guardian but sorry to hear about your Poison Necro. Points are always spread so thin with those guys especially without the merc to hold enemies in place (and thus requiring more points for Dim Vision/Attract/Confusion).

I am getting back into D2 after playing lots of other games. D3 struck me too much as a video game (i.e. no planning required) to actually buy it. I know that this is an old tourney, but the simple rules appeal to me.
I have entered Abbott, a Vengeance/Conviction Abbott. This tournament requires a significantly different play style than what I am used to because I am used to letting the merc kill everything. I feel more involved compared to just guiding the merc around.
Abbot killed Normal Andy without a problem. Sadly, she dropped nothing of value. Other notes:
* Significant skill points are 16 Prayer, 1 Meditation and 1 Vengenace
* Stats are 70-20-75-15. I don't know how long I can keep the 95% chance to hit with no Dex
* Once he got Cleansing, health wasn't a problem
* Once I gambled a Maul at level 17 (a rare on first try), he has been killing most mobs with one shot
* Vegeance used up all my mana very quickly, so I saved it for when I ran into bosses
* I didn't have to pay too much attention unless he ran into a boss. Most bosses went down easy
Plans for Act 2:
* Keeping pumping Prayer. At level 24, put one point into Meditation. Once Prayer is maxed, start pumping Vengeance
* Once I get the cube, change to a Savage Lochaber Axe. At level 25, change to a Savage Bill

Excerpt from the diary of Black Hack
Me and my pals were summoned by an urn to an ice cave today. Evil urns they call them, which is appropriate, seeing as we get no time to prepare for the fight.
I am a weird beast this time. I can use burrowing tentacles or I can smack the hero like usual. I am labelled as Cursed. Yeah, like I did not know that already! Cursed to be forever reborn and smacked around by all kinds of heroes, except the ultra rare occasions where we win. That is less often than one in thousand times. Sigh.
So, who do we fight this time? A strange-looking woman, the kind that is usually accompanied by a burly lad with a polearm. This one looks to be alone, though. She has long dark hair and her face is hidden behind a huge metal helmet with horns. She looks hesitant, runs towards us, then back, forth and back, then zigzags around a bit. She holds a bow but no arrows are coming. Weird. Some of my pals try some spikes at her but nearly all miss. She is not standing still long enough for that to be effective. "You three, tie her up so I and the rest can spike her!".
Where did my troops go? I hear no fighting. I have a bad feeling about this.
"Oh well, we have to move in. Let's go!"
Oh crap, the three are dead already! "There she is. You two, charge!
Guys! Did you not hear me?
You...two...are no more?!?"
Oh dear, there are flames everywhere! IT BURNS! AAAAHHHhh...glrg!"

You probably don't remember, but I wrote A Guide to Untwinked, single-pass HC play, V0.2 based on your Guide to Untwinked, Single-pass, early game Magic Finding. I am working on re-formatting and expanding my guide. Abbott is going to be my test build for the new version of the guide. As you are so knowledgeable and so helpful, I would like to you ask some questions as I get closer to finishing it. One question I have now is at what level do you have a perfect gem for cube recipes? Assuming that all gem shrines are used on topazes that are used for MF helms.
Is that your polite way saying that it is a less-than-optimal build idea?
A Blaze Sorc sounds perfect for this tourney. However, why Lightning? I would go with Frozen Orb as the complement, but I don't have anywhere near the experience you have.

No, it's far from perfect. A sensible Blaze Sorc uses a shield...
Why Lightning? It's a novelty thing, really. I have one Mat (my first ever, in 1.09) and one Guardian with Orb as their main skill. Lightning is much more new to me. I have only invested in it once, with that last attempt that ended in late Nightmare, and she had only just started to use it regularly (Doom Knights in Act IV Nightmare are the first fire immune tough monsters).
I am not quite sure, as I generally do not cube them 'as I go' with any characters that have a merc (because I want more weapon rerolling gems later). Hellforge gives one
and I think I can cube about one perfect of each kind near the end of Act IV or at least early Act V. Once flawless gems start to drop regularly, the perfects start to pile up. So around level 33-37, I would guess.
Not at all. Vengeance/Conviction is a classic build and can be very powerful. My Paladin in the Random 2012 tourney had it as one aspect of the build (weapon switch with Cruel Great Poleaxe). I do not quite understand the Prayer thing, though.

I have never played a Blaze Sorc as I don't see a synergy between Blaze and a merc. Without a merc, that issue goes away. How do you kill monsters that resurrect? In particular, Greater Mummies? They don't move much and I would think their minions would keep getting in the way.

Yes, a good point indeed. In my experience, a Blaze Sorc can not have a melee merc, but I have been reasonably succesful with a Lightning Act III merc and with an Act I merc. Still, Blaze works best alone, and there were some fights when I left the merc dead.
As I usually do with underpowered characters: lure the skeletons well away from their awareness range. This can be tricky early on in the areas.
If there are no undead in their sight, they will mix up their Unholy Bolts with moving closer sometimes. And while I try to coax them into chasing me, I can lay down a large and super thick fire patch.
Here in Normal, it has been more simple. Just a little luring needed, then a little Blaze trail and make a fire circle around the greater mummy (for protection from skellies), Static a few times and hit with an open wounds axe (first a 'Steel' Battle Axe, later a 'Malice' Giant Axe). The skellies were not dangerous either way - they had a hard time hitting because I was way above their level, plus the Shiver Armor slowed them.
I have some alternate plans for Nightmare (I have made it through there three times with a Blaze Sorc already).
- Lay down a fire mat, lure skellies to me and spam Glacial Spike (1 point as utility skill) as they walk into the fire. This is how I killed and got rid of Colenzo's minions today.
- Lightning from afar.

Radament is dead and I have the cube. I started Act 2 by heading out into the Rocky Waste in quest of the cube. I struggled there as the leapers gave me a lot of trouble. Eventually, either the enemies got easier or I adjusted to them as I soon was having no problems clearing packs. I did have a NDE with a boss Lightning Burning Dead mage and his minions in a hallway in the Stony Tomb - I was doing so well that I stayed fighting the group too long and was down to a thin sliver of life before I pulled away. I chugged a fat purple and waited around the corner for the pack. The pack broke up and was easy to take out.
No sets yet. I found Biggin's Bonnet and Blood Crescent in Act 1 and Crushflange in Act 2 so far.
I used two diamond chippies to roll Savage weapons. The first was a War Scythe (which I immediately sold) and the second was a 69% Bill. As I want to horde chippies, I am going to keep with my rare Maul until 25 unless a flawed diamond drops and I get a good roll.
Edit: After cubing and such, my MF is up to 149.
For Duriel, should I consider using the Crushflange for its CB? Or plan to use the Savage Bill?

Abbott is level 28 and has cleared all of the False tombs. 6 S/U's - Arctic Binding, Biggin's Bonnet, Blood Crescent, Crushflange, Nagelring and Witherstring. I was really happy to see the Nagelring drop, but my excitement was tempered when I discovered it had 15% MF
166 MF currently - 30 Circlet, 18 Amulet, 39 Armor, 25 Gloves, 25 Boots, 15 and 14 for rings. The rest of my gear is a Savage Bill; a +16 mana, 5% CTC Level 3 Frost Nova Light Belt; and some charms for Extra Gold. My switch is a DV wand, which I haven't used in quite some time.
I have 434K on hand, and am not sure of what to gamble for. It will probably take a lot of money to improve my Circlet's MF. I am thinking of gambling for a Plated Belt, ideally with mana. After that, a rare Great Maul. Beyond that, I don't know. Amulet? Any other advice?

I would wait with the Plated Belts at least until late Act III. At clvl 31, you have 50% chance that a gambled Plated Belt with get high enough ilvl for the biggest resist affixes to spawn. If you really want a resist belt for the upcoming act, go for a Belt.
Boots looks like an attractive gamble right now. Not only can you get big resists, you can also get up to 35% MF. Plus they are still cheap gambles so you get many chances with that kind of money you have.
Amulet has the biggest improvement potential for MF, and can get lots of other nice stuff.

I killed Duriel on /p8.
My first session in Act 2 was getting the cube and killing Radament plus all of the areas in between. I was bummed at the end of that session that I had played so long and gotten nothing useful - no S/U's, no useful rares, no useful charms, no topazes, no flawed diamonds. I finished the session by gambling circlets and my last gamble produced a Natural Circlet of Luck (30%). Sweet!
At level 23, I maxed out Prayer. At level 24, I took Meditation. With it on, I could leave Vengeance on full-time. I was using a rare maul and being able to leave Vengeance on full-time with just the occasional blue pot in big battles was huge.
At level 25, I switched to a Savage Bill. My chance to hit slipped to around 80%, so I started pumping Dex. I continued pumping Vengeance. No problems to speak of.
At level 28, I decided to start pointing the points into Conviction pre-reqs. As there are 5, I am not getting Conviction at level 30. After I cleared the false tombs, I did a big gambling session and got a rare Plate Belt (+12% ED, +5 to Life, Cold Resist +20%, Attacker Takes Damage of 2, +2 to Light Radius), a Sharp Great Maul of the Bat (10% ED, +18 to AR, 5% ML) and a rare Great Maul (30% ED, +8 Max Damage, +25 to AR, Adds 1 - 6 Lightning, 5% LL, Hit Causes Monster to Flee 25%, Fire Resist +7%). With the rare Great Maul and my healing, my life was rarely not full in the true tomb.
For Duriel, I changed my boots to ones with less MF but with Half Freeze Duration. For weapons, I went with Crushflange as my main and the Savage Bill on the switch. I was initially too aggressive about hit my reds and purples and used up all of my good ones quickly. I fought most of the battles with Light Heals from Drognan. With the Crushflange, I was expecting to see a big drop in Duriel's life every 3-4 swings, but that didn't happen. His life went down, but very slowly. I guess I don't understand Crushing Blow on bosses on /p8. When his life was about half down, I switched to the Savage Bill. I decided the slowness of the Great Maul would make me too vulnerable to interruptions. The technique I eventually settled on was (1) cast a TP as soon as I came in then switch to Meditation, (2) run to a wall so Duriel couldn't charge me, (3) swing a lot, (4) hit the reds often enough so that the faint red was always near the top, (5) when I got to less than a 1/4 life, run until I was healed and then either go back to town to buy more Light Heals or if I had enough Light Heals to keep fighting, run to another wall.
S/U's this act: Nagelring (worn), Crushflange (used against Duriel), Arctic Band, Steelgoad, Witherstring

I am going to try again, this time with a fire werebear. He made it to the Outer Cloister
* The good news: I found a gem shrine on the back side of the Blood Moor. The bad news: it took 14 chippies for me to find my first topaz. I had to wait much longer than I like to do my initial mule off
* He found a +2 Firestorm, +1 Raven Wolf Head just before finding my first topaz chippie for my helm, so I used it and had a Raven keeping me company
* With the slow start to his topaz collection, he didn't get all 5 sockets filled with chipped topazes until level 16
* Despite my low MF, I found a Infernal Cranium (set cap) and a Biggin's Bonnet (unique cap) in the Tower
* The Countess dropped an Eth
* For non-dangerous circumstances, I went as a Werebear and beat everything up. For boss packs and other dangerous situations, I downshifted to human form and rolled Molten Boulders until the enemies were no longer dangerous
* After I put my fist topaz chippie in my stash, I found a +2 Molten Boulder, +3 Firestorm, +1 Raven Wolf Head with one socket. I decided the boost to Molten Boulder was worth the loss of MF. I put my chippie topaz into it and used it
* At level 17, Gheed refused to sell me a Maul for the longest time, then sold me a sweet rare - 37% Enhanced Damage, +54 to AR, +1-2 Cold Damage, +2 Strength, +8 LR
* I have found Diablo II's description of weapon speeds confusing. I found this awesome post by jiansonz and realized that I should have been building towards using Fire Claws with a Great Axe instead of a Maul. Oh well. I will be able to use a Great Axe at level 20

* I continued my play as before - for non-dangerous circumstances, I went as a Werebear and beat everything up. For boss packs and other dangerous situations, I downshifted to human form and rolled Molten Boulders until the enemies were no longer dangerous
* When I hit clvl 18, I got Fire Claws. With Maul, I get the bonus whenever the green ball is whirling around me, not just when I am using the the Maul attack. So I could do three hits with Maul to power it up and then use my standard attack to get the same bonus without any mana expense or use Fire Claws to do a LOT of damage. I went toe-to-toe with the Smith and took him out
* When I hit clvl 20, I gambled Great Axes until I got a rare, then I gambled some Mauls, then I gambled some circlets
* I had forgotten to mule on a +4 Dex charm at the Inner Cloister, so I saved after clearing the Catacombs Level 2, did my gambling, muled things on and off, ran through the Catacombs Level 2 at /p1 and went to /p8 for the Catacombs Level 3
* I really, really wanted to like my rare Great Axe (+10% IAS, 16% ED, +1-2 Cold, 5% LL, Fire Resist +9%). It was a lot faster than my rare Maul, but it wasn't anywhere near as effective. For example, I also gambled a Deadly Maul of the Leech (22% ED, 4% LL). The rare Great Axe gave me 2 life per hit where as the maul gave me 5
* While I was experimenting with my new weapons, I inadvertently used my last TP scroll. When my inventory got full, I tried to head back to town but I couldn't. I tried to run back to the WP, but the path was too congested with enemies
* Not being able to re-stock in town really discombobulated me. I wandered around the dungeon killing enemies but I never felt on top of things like I normally do. I had a number of tough champions/unique battles where I didn't have the potion set up I am used to, so I frantically improvised to kill them
* Finally, a TP scroll dropped and I made it back to town. I went through the level, picked up all the stuff that dropped that I couldn't carry and took it back to town. I then cleaned out the fourth level and got ready to fight Andariel
* I fought her at /p8 using Maul and Fire Claws. I chugged a few potions, but not too many. She dropped two uniques - Gorefoot and Leadcrow. I can see using Gorefoot when I need the extra running speed
* I plan to keep pumping Molten Boulder. At clvl 24, I can get Hunger and Shockwave. I am thinking on skipping on Shockwave right now as it doesn't stun long enough to let me kill things in melee while stunned. Once I get Hunger, I plan on using Fire Claws regularly with an occasional Hunger mixed in. At clvl 25, I plan to switch to a Savage Bill at clvl 25. I am planning on tanking Duriel like I did with Andariel

* At clvl 24, I got Volcano, Hunger and Shockwave. Hunger is great - I will fight or bowl a group and then when I am down to one enemy, I use Hunger to restore my blue ball. OTOH, I haven't assigned hotkeys to Volcano or Shockwave. The stun from Shockwave is too short at level 1 for me to worry about
* I had planned on switching to a Savage Bill at clvl 25. However, I haven't had any flawed diamonds drop. I used three chipped diamonds to roll Savage weapons and got all trash. I also screwed up, put points into VIT I should have put into STR to have 95 when I hit clvl 25
* I have had good and bad luck with S/U drops. The good luck is I have 8 S/U drops so far. My Envious tourney character is very envious. The bad luck is none of them I want to use. The uniques are Biggin's Bonnet, Gorefoot, Leadcrow and Steelgoad. The set items are Cathan's Seal, Civerb's Icon, Cleglaw's Claw and Infernal Cranium
* For runes, I got an Eth from the Countess, one Nef has dropped and if I combined my other twelve runes, I could make another Nef

Crushing blow and other skills that scale off of enemy life lose their effectiveness with the increase of players in the game, as damage calculations are based on the original life of the enemy, not the scaled life. This means that crushing blow is really only good for about a 5% damage boost rather than the usual damage. Against bosses, this is even more apparent.
It's still good to have CB on player 8, but at that point actual damage is going to be more important. Same applies for corpse explosion, ect.
