Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

Oh, and double post for the "Welcome Back" post.

 Welcome back, Drixx! Good to see another HC'er around here again, and may all your drops be green, golden and orange!

Grats on the Unique Phase Blade. Now only to make him cough up the Azurewrath... ;)

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

It's quite strange that this post has showed up today. I too have recently returned to D2 (hardcore only) and was MFing NM Meph with some weird results. My merc cannot tank Meph anymore even with semi decent gear (for Nightmare) so I've been using the moat trick but run really short on mana due to not having insight, but even then the council were attacking me which they never did when I played before. If you stand in TheMuttonExplosions 3rd picture the council will throw hydras (which do 0 dmg in NM) and their life leech thing but its out of range.

My advise would be to lose some MF for Fire Resistance, even wearing a dwarf star ring (fire absorb) may negate the hydras dmg.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

I'm not sure this has been mentioned, but are you on P1? My merc never had problems surviving at hell meph once i gave him a reaper's toll / kelpie. I don't recall exactly how fast meph goes down, but it's really fast. 2-3 Statics. 2 Blizzards, that should be it, really.

I've never used any moat tricks or whatever. There's just no need for it. Not using any rejuvs usually either.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

You might want to check out your mercs resistances. If they are below max, get them up and see if the problem persist. Most of the time it's the poison cloud that kills the merc. You might also want to feed him potions every now and then until he has more hp and max resists.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

I find that good teleporting is enough to keep the merc alive against Meph (not against Andy). It might add 10 seconds or so to your kill time but its worth it if you need a living merc to run him, just teleport around dropping blizzards on his head. If your merc gets dangerously low on health give him a little time to regenerate. I'm by no means an expert meph runner but a decent blizz with maxed CM takes care of him really fast.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

Give your merc a 50%+ slow weapon (Kelpie's or Woestave), keep the Rockstopper and give him whatever damage reduction armor you have until you find a Shaftstop.

Also, in terms of killing speed I hope you maxed CM before the last synergy.

Actually, CM should be maxed along with the first synergy for optimal performance if you are a Blizzard sorc.

Mephisto is 75% cold resistant so you continue to get CM benefit all the way up to CM = 32. For Hell, I generally like at least CM = 27 since there are a lot of monsters with some cold resistance in the later acts of hell.

But, the real reason that your Merc keeps dying is probably the level difference between Meph and the merc. Meph's mlvl is 87 I think and your merc is at 80ish. Gain some levels and he'll be tougher to bring down.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

how far have zou progressed in game ?
have you just reached pandemonium, or are you maybe somewhere in harrogath ?
if you got into harrogath, try pindling, it does wonders for drops and for exp too.
My blizzy exped exclusively on Pindle from some 85 > 95, and I plan to get 96 there too (~7k runs left on p8).
also, try lowering player setting to 3 or 5, you still have good chance of drop, and you still gain pretty decent exp too.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

Just level 80 and got Act 4 unlocked but haven't progressed in it yet.

This. The slow effect is by far the most reliable protection as long as the merc hits Meph. If you add some %DR on top of that, he only dies on rare occasions.

In, HC, I recommend to S&E if your merc dies while you are still face to face with Meph - his charged bolts are fatal and unpredictable (no casting animation). You need to use Static carefully too, esp. in the beginning, when its range is very short due to the initial lack of +skills. If you teleport too close, Meph sometimes stays focused on you!

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

I'd still go moating without the merc (only prob later on is underlveled merc).

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

i run him on players 3 following this guide nearly word for word. two mana teleport and relatively low cost of orb make it so you dont need insight and kelpie snare really does wonders at keeping the merc alive. as mentioned here higher levels does help the idiot stay alive too.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

Wow. A Meph question from a veteran? Now I've seen it all ;)

It seems like you have things under control. I pretty much have nothing more to add to the Kelpie/Teleport around/Moat thing. I mean, you are doing Blizzard-Static(x3)-Blizzard-IceBolt-Blizzard-..., yeah? Chilling him before Static seems obvious but wasn't mentioned yet, I think.

Hey, I'm not getting any younger. I knew that I had no problem with this a couple years ago but for the life of me I couldn't remember what I had done differently. Turns out the Kelpie Snare was the thing that really made the difference.

Re: Hell Mephisto, harder than I remembered!

I used to bait him to the right side, then teleport to the portal. Meph would get stuck, the merc wouldn't move, and meph was too far to cast anything but close enough for me to target him.
You can also do him without the merc if you're just using the merc for insight.
