Another update here, and another Labor completed!

Heracles took it easy over the weekend and spent time on life instead of questing, so not as much progress was made as hoped for. Either way, the Glacial Trail was a breeze, but the Drifter Cavern was as annoying as expected, even though slvl 2 Howl helped out a lot. There was an unfortunate cornering on an icy cave wall where Howl had no effect on the brutish Drifters, which was leaving Heracles to either S&E, die, or try something else. War Cry (slvl 3) had not been mentioned for the Drifter Labor, and after releasing a couple of War Cries, Howl became much more effective. Of course, moments after freeing himself, Heracles reached the chest and popped it open. Then, he proceeded to War Cry and Concentrate his way back out of the cavern.

On a side note, anyone who has played a singer Barb notice this before? Where a low level Howl does not effect the monsters, but suddenly gains potency after War Crying those same monsters?

The rest of A5 has been a breeze, staying well above the necessary level. Hoping to score some more items to tackle NM with, so even though Baal has gone down without much difficulty, Heracles has yet to enter the Nightmare. Still waiting to find the right item to socket... it may end up being white body armor 'cause Larzuk has yet to have a 4os body armor for sale.

i started a second char: DannyCrane - almost the same build as ThisIsMalaga, some minor changes. as monday is my solely day off each week, i made it through normal and will edit some more later

Magara is now in A5 norm and completed the third task. I ran Tristram and decided to go for a 3 Eth leg and after static and her weak-ish enchant, that was the plan. So no problems with the CS or the seal bosses via a strong Firewall and starting Frozen Orb, but for Diablo the concern was greater. I shopped a Skill shrine, enchanted myself, unequipped the merc, went to a previously found Lightning resist shrine, and then faced Diablo. The first 99% of his health went very quickly with Static but the last took a few tense moments- with a tiny bit of poison damage, I think I did see Diablo turn green before he died. LCS had chance to hit Diablo as 56% (which I don't think counts the 3 Eths, albeit at their half-effectiveness) but it certainly seemed like less than half of the blows were landing!

(Now that I'm re-reading the rules, I realize I didn't need to do it on /players 8, but I have been playing /players 8 all along so no biggie there, particularly with Static!)

I'm not sure what strategy to use for the normal Drifter Cavern task- hopefully the monster roll is favorable and she can thread her way by. I assume Frozen Armor is OK for that, but what if the merc attacks a monster?

Jimmy,you are not allowed to use a WarCry greater than slvl1 in a Survival Labor.

I suggest you go back and re-try the labor with a new map.

All of the cold armors are okay. The rules say that you are supposed to remove your Merc's weapon for Drifter Cavern and all other Survival/Stealth Labors.

Krupa, I am embarrassed to admit that until this moment I didn't realized that ThisIsMalaga had ended in Deeds. I've gone back and found it in post#120. I am so sorry. Good luck with your new character.

Well, this sucks. Stone is dead. I was facing diablo and he killed me. Not quite sure how I died. I had 75 FR and 62 LR. My life was dropping and I went to 20% I hit Full rejuv. My finger was pressing in my "1" key as I saw deeds. Checking atma I had 1 less rejuve than I started the fight with. Whatever. He was actually a boring character to play. I think i'll start again with something else.

Sorry to hear about the Diablo death, ouch!

Megara stepped steathily through the Glacial Trail and made it to the Drifter Chest, accumulating an entourage of witches en route but not enough to worry too much about. That entourage and the local white fuzzy folks were enough to drive her to drink a fair number of thawing and red potions, though.

Now she's levelling with Baal runs, enjoying the extreme convenience of Static for as long as she can!

So just a quick question before I try the next Labor, are you allowed to use charges of skills in the survival labors? For instance.. can a druid shop a wand with terror charges (necro curse) and use them while running through to the drifter cavern? Just want to make sure I don't screw up my attempt :D

oh ps.. the game is definately mocking me and tempting me to get into melee with this and this. Useless for my character, but amazing if it was on a sin!

Not that I've had much to complain with me wearing a duskdeep, stealth, sigon's guard, 30% nagel and a manald in my stash... :whistling:

More progress, another labor down!

Act 2 was pretty easy, Went down and killed Radament. Made a V-line for the lost city, while in the dry hills I found a Tal's Mask! A great helm of course, and the merc will likely get to use it...in 10 levels when it is equipable! Took me 5 map re-rolls to get fire towers, and then I found 3 on that map. This may be the end of that challenge, as I may not find any in hell :p 1 2

I wasn't particularly worried about the next challenge as Bone Prison + Bone spear = Pwnd, but I did prepare by shopping a new belt, gloves, boots so that I wouldn't be naked. Before and After I forgot that I needed a helm too, oh well. I didn't really see why I had to remove my bone helm, but apparently bone is a rare type of metal :p I think in the end it was my life total that did him in :)

Duriel was a pushover, apparently he won't even target the bone prison, as he just sat there and took it like a man!

Despite only killing what was in my way, I still gained 6 levels in the act, not too bad! only 7 more until I can use tals :crazyeyes:

EDIT: Charges are fine, as long as the skill is not banned in that challenge already.

What Kestegs said. Charges are allowed as long as the skill itself is allowed.

:doh: My bad! I overlooked bone helms, which should be allowed during the Kill Ancient Kaa challenge. I will change the rules in the first post to allow them.

Congrats kestegs on Ancient Kaa and the Tal's Crest. Awesome find!

As for my incompleted task, I've updated the chart to reflect this and will make another attempt this evening. The War Cries didn't kill any monsters if that was the problem (playing on /p8). Heracles will only be using Howl, and perhaps charges of Terror, for the reattempt.

I suppose Heracles was lucky not to make any progress yesterday or earlier today; otherwise, Heracles may have decided to enter Nightmare before needing to redo the Drifter Cavern. Thanks for the clarification QD! And apologies for the transgression.

Nice on the charges.. not to sound completely lame but I shopped a Wand of Dim Vision (lvl 3 with 82 charges), a Wand of Lower Resist (lvl 1 with 67 charges) and a Kris of Terror (lvl 2 with 75 charges) to keep in my stash for the rest of the game :D now all I need to shop is a lifetap wand for the occasional time where I have to keep my merc alive...

Still haven't done the Drifter Cavern though.. might have time tomorrow. Thanks for the clearing up Kestegs and QD.

Hopefully this is a quick question:

Seeing as Heracles has made it to Nightmare, but has yet to enter, would it be ok to go to Nightmare, Save & Exit right away, then go back to Normal to complete the Drifter Labor? The reason is that I'm not sure/not comfortable with my computer skills when it comes to deleting the map file as I have never done this before and Heracles needs to get a brand new map for the Labor. Yeah, my apologies for the noob question everyone.

I say yea its no biggie, and fyi, deleting the map file won't reset the map. Just start up a TCP/IP game and S&E to get a new one.

Cool, thanks kestegs. Yeah, that'd be no problem... except I don't currently have internet at home. I update and troll on the forums while I am at work on break or have finished all of my daily stuff. That's also why I don't have pics on what progress I've made.

I'm psyched to start Nightmare too, 'cause I found the Bonesnap I've been looking for in the Nihlathak's Temple area after running Pindle for the 25th time or so, but haven't yet because of the Drifter Labor. Jimmy - Again, just try what Kestegs said. Rather than press the single player buitton, press the TCP/IP button and start up a game with yopur character. then close it, open the single player game and presto - new map. No internet is needed.

If you are reluctant to do that, then yes, go ahead to Nightmare, S&E and then return to Normal. That will change your map as well.

After all the miscommunication, disqualification, requalification, etc. with my leapbarb, he sort of soured for me, so I began a new character. It was a sorceress who died at the Summoner on normal. Again, I was in a rush, as always. I began to notice a pattern, which might be summed up: "rushing equals death." Therefore, I started a new character.

[highlight]Introducing Asparagus, the Medic Paladin[/highlight]

What is a medic paladin? Simply put, it is a paladin that uses holy bolt as his primary skill. "But holy bolt only damages the undead," you say. Yes, but it heals your mercenary. Thus, my plan for taking on the hordes of hell involved two primary steps: (1) get a big hurty stick for the merc, and (2) cast holy bolt on him a lot. With this build, I would be forced to take it slow. :D

Asparagus began his adventures in the usual way. He snuck through the Corpsefire's defenses...

Duriel was the first major challenge, as usual, and a decisive moment in Asparagus' life. This holy bolt business was either going to work or it wasn't, and we were going to find out here. Fortunately, it worked quite nicely. The fight was long, but never dangerous.

So the drill was the same as Andy, Duriel, and Mephisto: let the merc do his job, heal him, and yawn as necessary. At the last minute, stop healing the merc, let him die, and land the killing blow with Wirt's Emerald-Studded Leg. Unfortunately, Mr. Holy Bolt was no match for Mr. Lightning Hose, and the merc died instantly. With no attack skills, this meant that Asparagus was in for a long, long battle. I had one prerequisite point in Charge and one in Blessed Aim. Together, that gave me a 65% chance to hit. My strategy was to run in circles around the fire-breathing fury, charge in and infect him with 78 poison damage over 4 seconds (65% of the time), then run in circles until the poison wore off. According to the Arreat Summit, Diablo has 50% poison resistance and 13,818 hit points in Normal. :whistling:

After spending a while visiting with a charming monster named Pindleskin, my character's path changed completely.

With this drop, I knew that I had a new tool in my arsenal against act bosses and other tough monsters: the flail has 50% slow, and it can be applied very quickly with no regard for AR though the use of smite. I eventually used my socketing quest on this item and stuck a Shael in it to increase my smite speed. I have not used the skill very much so far (mostly just for positioning monsters to help out my merc), but I plan to eventually max it for the long stun duration. With stun, slow target, and [hopefully] crushing blow, Asparagus will be able to make a small but significant contribution to important battles.

In Nightmare, I completed the various quests and labors required, then stopped for a while at the Countess' Tower, hoping to address my awful rune luck to that point. There I had an amazing find:

...simply unbelievable. My jaw dropped. I am not using at the moment, since I need the resists that my current rings are giving me, but that is still pretty amazing. I am hoping for similar luck in the future!

Megara killed Baal and has done many normal Baal runs to level and MF in normal before she departs. She's actually accumulated a nice variety of gear for just about every class except sorceress!

@Sint: charged items may be considered "lame" but I think of them as "essential" as my plans figure on them heavily! Most important, a Lower Resist wand is the plan for the Hell Ancients. That far-off labor already looms large for Megara. I think I will take a SC sorc and practice rerolling the Hell Ancients on /players 8 to get a sense of what to expect immunities to be on average, and whether or not a Lower Resist wand has much chance of breaking them. My normal playstyle is to reroll the Ancients many times before actually battling them, so that labor is quite a serious one. I may end up being happy doing 11 of 12 unless I can convince myself that I have a decent chance of succeeding there. I'm trying to decide to go tri-elemental or not. Frozen Orb and Firewall are set, and I'm leaning toward Lightning or Chain Lightning if I go for 3 elements as those seem more compatible with the "stand off at a distance" attack instead of Nova which takes some proximity. I do not want proximity with /players 8 Hell Ancients! The other plan would be to have a stronger Orb and Wall and not invest in a third killing skill and hope that between Static, a strong merc, and Lower Resist, something will work out. It does seem like there are often 2 of 3 Hell Ancients who are Fire/Cold immune, so I think this will be a big concern.

I also hope it is ok to "practice" some the later labors in normal, just to get a feel for what to expect. My plan is for Megara and her merc to continue to be over-levelled and that way they can MF as they go along. But I figure before I leave normal I may do some practice efforts to aid the real attempts later in NM, for example.

this will be a major, well, update. i was too lazy to post any progress until now, as i´ve simply rebuilt ThisIsMalaga with a minor change: instead of getting sanctuary aura, put points into resist lightning. i want to introduce DannyCrane - he has never lost a fight and never will

normal:

act 1: i had one problem in the first labor. there were two houses, but none of them contained a special chest. one had a bed and that was it. so i went on to get the wp and slap corpsefire. went much smoother than with my first char. the rogue i got for killing bloodraven was lvl 2 and died i think 6 times, till i got a new one in the stony field. the entire act i had to run with zero mf, because i couldn´t find a topaz whatsoever. my first one dropped from andi

act 2: replaced my rogue with an defiance moron and nothing else worth mentioning really. i destroyed one tower and i think it will be the only one DannyCrane himself will actually fight. On lvl 26 i faced duriel. he focused mainly on me, so it was no problem to keep the merc alive. took a while, but he went down without too much trouble.

act 3: done on p5 and i finally had found enough topaz (what is the english pural of it?) to fill my armor and helmet. one lucky drop here was a a fortuitous ring of chance

act 4: can´t remember which rune dropped at the hellforge, but a perfect and a flawles topaz did. inserted in the equipment and i was at ~120 mf. the diablo labor was a pain this time. got his health down and the merc killed, business as usual so far. but i did not have an elemental aura. so i had to hit him with an unsocket wirrets leg. incl conz aura i had a dmg of 10-38 and a chance to hit in the 60´s (lucky me i had gone for max block) i kept hitting him for quite a while but eventually he died.

act 5: when atma first started selling wands with the bahamuts prefix i was ready for the deathtrap labor. i needed a wand with terror charges anyway, so i went shopping. took me 30 minutes till i had found a wand with terror charges and the best thing that came up in the meantime was a dragon's wand of the magus. not optimal, but i had to live with it for now.
with the charges i could free myself this time, when i got stuck in the glacial trail. the drifters cavern itself was surprisingly free, so the chest was opened

after baal the cow king was killed. that left the personalizing, imbue and socket reward. i gambled circlets and got on of life everlasting. larzuk was in a pitiful mood and inserted one socket, which was filled with a sol to get 30 dr. it was also peronalized. the imbue was a bit trickier. i had kept a white demonhide sash, a circlet and an akaran rondache. i decided to try the shield and ended up with rubbish. so much for normal

nightmare:

act 1: since i was using a ancients pledge shield with 60@ resis weren´t an issue. another stealth labor was next. i did a bit of shopping again to get a wand with higher lvl charges. lucky as i was i got a bahamuts wand of the magus this time (used my nm personalization reward on it)
the map was huge and the exit was in the last corner i looked
what i didn´t know was, that in act 1 nightmare elite weapons can drop already...i was quite surprised

act 2: i traded the defiance moron for an offensive one. i thought of getting one that could do something for my smite dmg. but after 15-20 minutes and a NDE i can´t remember currently, i decided to rather get some crowd control. so holy freeze it was. when i reached the lost city it was time to overpower the tower. but to my shock i couldn´t find any...what to do now? i went on to the valley of the sneak to at least kill one and ask questions later, when suddenly there were two...like the last time i maneuvered the moron to the first and hid. 5-10 minutes on youtuube later the first tower was down. for the second i returned in time so i could watch it crumble
so the Kaa labor was one now. i made sure to switch to p8 after i stepped through the portal in the sanctuary. in the first tomb i met him and tp'd to town to switch to non metallic gear and the fight was on! he had some bad qualities but eventually he went down. while taking the screenshot i realized, i had switched the shield, the armor, the boots but i forgot the gloves :doh:
luckily i had met him in the first tomb, so when not killing anything in the canyon i wouldn´t have to rerun too much. so map reroll
next try, third tomb. this time he died much easier and faster due to not being stone skin - i had to use smite, as i was constantly out of mana if i didn´t. from here on i played on p8
i found a steelclash in on of the tombs. very nice shield, specially when upped. served me nicely till the end of nightmare

act 3: i had already found two lems. one in a2 and one from a chest in the arach lair so i had a lot of rune luck. but there was more
not sure currently what to do with it. crescent moon, duress or something else? another thing that dropped approximately 10 minutes later (used the nm socket reward on it).
i encountered a very evil stair trap in the last of the six temples. a cursed fana scarab mob surrounded by a bunch of vipers. i entered and threw one or two hammers, hoping my merc could do at least a little dmg and left again. the boss died after approx the 20th time i enterd and the next time i took the screeenshot.

act 4: this is were i died the last time to conviction souls. so this time i was prepared. lvl 6 resist lightning aura on when running around or standing still. 81 max resist with aura and 78 without. but ofc no souls were here...hellforge
the decease deseis labor: i cleaned the entire cs. every single monster was dead. time to make the seis-weapon. until now i had only found a 4 soc spetum - slow and low dmg. but what the hell. shael eld ith shael. so i spawned him and lured away his minions. no problem, except one was reluctant to leave deseis. the merc went straight for deseis so i was thinking about smiting the minion. i was amped and almost one hitted. 50 life left, when suddenly the minion vanished. the moron had killed deseis so quickly and pretty much saved my butt. diablo wasn´t worth mentioning

act 5: the first unique jewelery dropped. turned out to be a dwarf star. this will help a lot in hell against fire enchanted bosses and the like. in a4 i had found a 3 soc flail, but was out of nefs. as i was not using any item that has been muled out of the game, i kept it on the floor. by the time i found a nef in a5 it had vanished into oblivion. somewhere a 3 soc warscepter dropped and i was excited about the staffmods. free sanctuary and meditation :jig: i checked and it seemed black could be made in any mace class weapon. what i didn´t know, was this
i was a bit worried about nihlathak so i slapped on a amulet of life everlasting, a SoE, that dropped somewhere, magefists and a dwarf star for a total of 41 %dr, 55 idr, 15% fire absorb and 75% res. the CE couldn´t touch me. the bugged hell tomb vipers won´t be an issue like this. i´m actually looking forward to this quest, if i will last that long. nm ancients were tackled in the same equipment, except i found a sacred targe which i instantly used to imbue. the result was neiter crap nor good. smite and life tap charged made this fight rather easy while it lasted quite some time. at some point i shopped a artisans light plate of the whale and filled it with 3 PTs

I had no idea that would work without internet. Thank you! Either way, I ended up popping in and out of NM.

Jealous of jdkerr's SoJ! Then again, Heracles found his first uni jewelry as well on the NM Cold Plains this morning: a Manald Heal. A great replacement for the 3% ML & +3 mana ring he was using.

Impressive updates Krupa, purplelocust and jdkerr! I am hoping that this learning curve with a Zerker really starts to pick up soon... it has yet to be as powerful as Concentration, and quite a slow moving tactic at that.

As mentioned above, the map was rerolled for Normal, and the Glacial Trail and Drifter Cavern re-traversed. This time, only Howl was used as Heracles was unable to find a wand with Terror charges. With the past experience, navigation was taken more seriously and cautiously. Fortunately and unfortunately, the moron got stun locked at the opposite end of the cavern early in stealth mode... so when the chest was popped, he was nowhere to be found and was in some sort of glitch until Heracles successfully fought his way back out of the cavern. This was quite an arduous process as the moron was being used for BA, and without the aura chance to hit was depressingly embarrassing (less than 50% for everything, even with mace mastery and Concentration). Wish I had a pic of it, it was quite peculiar.

Imbue quest was used early on for something shoved in Heracles' extended stash that I can't recall at the moment. Nothing noteworthy. Gambled a Circlet of Luck and socketed that, realizing that I knew it was a waste to use it on the circlet and not the Bonesnap until I had already done it.:doh: However, the personalization quest was used on the Bonesnap (it has a nice ring to it, "Heracles' Bonesnap"). Although all of the quests were completed and WPs found, Heracles decided to skip the Cow King as it seemed like a waste of time.

Moving on to Nightmare after reaching level 46 and upping the Bonesnap. Act 1 is proving difficult but manageable, especially with the slow moving War Cry, Heracles Smash!, War Cry, Heracles Smash!... etc. With the success of the Drifter Labor, a similar method was used in the Underground Passage where monsters became fleeing objects, especially with a slvl 9 Howl.

Heracles had his first real NDE in the Black Marsh, searching for the WP. A skeleton bosspack with Extra Strong and Cursed complimented with a surprise bosspack of Foul Crows with Extra Fast and Spectral Hit. Everything was going fine when aluvasuden over 1k life dropped to under 100 in under a second before Heracles spaz-emptied his belt full of potions (completely unnecessary after the first Full Rejuv, of course). I think BO wore off without my paying attention at the worst time possible, it is the only explanation I have; otherwise, that was some ridiculous encounter. After recovering and refilling the belt, Heracles lured the skele bosspack away, Heracles Smash!, then turned the Foul Crows in to bloody pulp pools.

Slow moving as usual. No where near as fast as Krupa :crazyeyes: Camping out at the Black Marsh until a few rune runs and levelings occur, especially after that NDE.

EDIT: I forgot to ask about body armor socketing patterns. Giving up after rerolling Larzuk's inventory about 100 times and not finding a single Artisan's/Jeweler's body armor (about a handful of Mechanic's) to purchase, I end up finding a 4os grey Ancient Armor in The Masoleum (NM). I thought only Hell could produce 4os body armors from monsters, and was wondering if anyone had heard differently since 1.13? Also, any tactics on finding Artisan/Jeweler's body armor successfully other than spending the time? Ok, I admit it, I can be lazy sometimes. :P The rest of this build is going slow, so my patience for the other stuff hasn't been the norm, heh.

Berserk is not a build designed for speed; you're never going to blow through the game. On the other hand, it sounds like a fun and relatively safe build. Keep up the good work! Don't forget the possibility of wielding an off-hand weapon, either (wizardspike would be an obvious twinked choice for the high resists, but I had a tournament berserker who found and wielded a gull dagger for the 100% MF).
