Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

I got Dooku from Thomh today. It's nice to see him again- his rehab from his youthful indiscretions into clay golemancery was a complete success!

Apologies for the abysmal mercenary gear. I completely forgot to craft a bit for him, hopefully you`ll be fine.

Antilles was also a welcome sight. I`m really looking forward to playing him.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Then I read the rules again and realized that I have misunderstood this part! :p This far, I have treated potions and charms as belonging only to the character I am playing, but that I have the freedom to keep their surplus ones (to avoid cluttering up stash/inv) in an ATMA stash until it´s time to send the character, when I put all of those things back onto the character. The only items I´ve kept in 'my own tourney stash' are socketables and the two allowed 'special' items.

No worries, and that explains why you were concerned about the character I sent without many full purple potions- I had a stash with many many of them, and so far all of the characters I've been playing have been adding to that pile but if you didn't have a pile, that makes sense now!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Offee the Trapper, her Shadow Warrior and companion Zanarhi entered the second level of Underground Passage. The two Fallen packs by the entrance were Cloaked, and soon fell to a barrage of Death Sentries. While fighting them, I noticed a Vile Hunter minion bouncing back and forth. OK, so a boss pack is close.

"Shouldn´t be too bad, we have taken many of them, and here is decent space to move around.", I thought. But these "ladies" were not to be taken lightly - Cursed Extra Strong! Shadow didn´t last two seconds, and I got out just before Zanarhi suffered the same fate.

I tried to establish a controlled fighting situation, but I failed at this a couple of times. They were such fast and fierce swarmers, there was hardly any time to lay traps. Zanarhi died twice. No matter what I did, we got Amped pretty much right away, every time. Fast Extra Strong minions are deadly when you´re Amped. The buggers are often poisonous, too...
We had also woken up two skeleton archers here that gave us a hard time every second they weren´t cloaked. Then I thought: "the bottom right passage usually just has some Fallen and maybe some other regular critters. Let´s try to portal park some of this mob there."

Yeah, right.

A Holy Freeze Extra Strong Stone Skin spitter pack filled the narrow passage completely! A panic TP got us out, but now this pack could see most of the starting room. Bad, bad, bad...

Several more failed attempts to kill stuff before needing to get back up the stairs. With more (and bulkier) Extra Strong monsters around, and HF slowing on top of everything else, this was a genuine furball now. At one time, I was Amped, had lost both companions, was HF slowed, chased by rogues, shot at by spitters and there were monsters blocking my way towards the stairs. I managed to circle them and get up. Phew! Not much actual damage taken, but this was very very close. Had only one of them hit me, Offee could well have been stunlocked and swarmed to death in about two seconds.

When I had licked my wounds and gotten my companions back, I made a run for it into the other passage (from where the rogues came from at the start). Shadow got swarmed and killed close to the stairs, but I managed to get both boss packs to lose track of me. Where I ended up, there was only a regular Vile Hunter pack and a skeleton archer. TP out, and we could finally begin to more calmly kill things in this place.

Then the rest of the act was easy. :jig:

This is really powerful build. A great advantage is that the sentries lets you dish out some major damage while you are moving. Fire Blast requires you to stand still, but this skill was still a pleasant surprise for me. I have always thought of it as being single target, but it actually has a decent radius. My earlier experiences with it also usually meant that I ran out of mana very soon. It´s quite a different thing when you can just keep thowing them all day...

I found an ethereal Stygian Pike in Tamoe Highlands. Interesting choice here: imbuing or using the socketing recipe for a (future) runeword. But I had no runes for a nice runeword, and The Pit was still left to play this session. I really wanted Zanarhi to have a decent weapon there. So I played the Barracks before The Pit, and Charsi came up with this. Note that the ED roll is quite low, but the etherealness still makes the damage a large step up from the 'Strength' Partizan Zanarhi had used up to this point.

Gee, was I glad for that extra damage against grumpy Seethe Venom here.

Pit level 2 was quite nasty with FOUR rogue boss packs (one with archers, three with meleers). Lots of CE, LE and Extra Strong but thankfully no Cursed or damage-boosting auras.

Base item grailer for me: Dream Spirit. Nice.

Against Andariel, I didn´t resurrect Zanarhi when he died, or bothered with Shadow summoning. I just kept recasting lightning traps as they started to get 'old' and ran laps around the blood pool.

The entire act (sans Countess and crew) full cleared on /players 5.

I bought three War Pikes from Fara and crafted them, but they were all total junk.

Vader is making slow and steady progress. He had a very NDE with some extra strong technicolor porcupines in the outer cloister - nothing a tiny bit of care wouldn't have avoided. He had a much more interesting fight against some cursed extra fast skeleton archers in the barracks. They were positioned at the end of a long straight hallway before the stairs...

A clay golem would last about 1.5 seconds, and Hazade showed no signs of moving up the hall. Several forays were attempted with dim vision, but the radius and duration were leaving us too open. Attract worked a bit better, but the boss was the most aggressive of the pack and had stepped clear of his minions, forcing any cursing to be done from well within his range. Thankfully that aggression eventually (many golems later) drew him back down the hall though to a point where he was within nova range and a small corner provided some shelter from his counter attack. Once he was down, the crowd control curses managed the remainder without too much trouble - the duration was just long enough to give a golem cover, and he lived just long enough to get a hit and run nova into them, fleeing in a stutter step zig-zag. Hazade mostly stood around wondering what all the fuss was about. Should down Andariel tonight or tomorrow, but there's definitely some more work to be done.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Nice work, jiansonz. I was afraid I was reading a Deeds post, at the start of that story!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

very glad as well that jianz was just injecting some drama into the report, rather than tragedy!

Yaddle is continuing to be a challenge. I am still vaccilating over skill choices (in light of the rule reminder, no more tips please!) but have decided to do some levelling in the areas where cold immunes are rare. FOrb is a slow killer at high player levels against tough mobs though.

Almost died to a quillrat bosspack before I had noticed as I had reshuffled gear for less poison res (not too keen on a 4x2 usable inventory!)

I am somewhat concerned still re the later parts of this act, could be a real chance of deedsing

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

So I'm a little behind the times, but Organa has been received and is working fine. It is nice to finally have a sorc - up to this point it's been all melee for me, with the exception of ahsoka in act 5 normal. It was bittersweet to see her armor - a rarely used (but useful) runeword to be sure, but one I was hoping to use my Pul rune for... (after all, what else am I going to use a Pul for?)

Getting Kenobi through Act 5 Nightmare was tedious at times, but fun on occassion as well. He should be good to go for hell, just remember to be patient if you find yourself in charge of him.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

#1 use for Pul (if you get another melee char):exceptional unique weapon upgrade formula...

I'm the one who made Organa's armor...was really pleased with it, I'd never used that runeword before.

Speaking of armor, Solo was still wearing the Stealth I made for him back in Act4 Normal! After pounding the rocks outta the Countess's head 10 times, he could easily afford a very nice new suit...though that tower was NO FUN...way too many nasty, vile-tempered chicks with bows in there. Hard to get close enuff to Howl and Solo hasn't got Taunt. Thank goodness for a good BO, but I think the folks in the Rogue Encampment now refer to Solo as 'the pincushion'. Undaunted, Solo is now pounding his way towards Andariel...

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

(after all, what else am I going to use a Pul for?)

I´ve found one of these, too. I have two potential plans for it:

- Like WoRG said, upgrade an exceptional unique weapon, to use in the last act. Even if it´s a caster, they could have a merc that likes this option.

- Find another Pul, and cube myself an Um rune (which has a gazillion uses).

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

The Senator (palpatine) has made it to act 2.

The act for the most part was ridiculously easy at /p3!

Bone prison just makes things silly! I did not run countess more than 1 time, as I just dislike that place to due stair traps etc. for a character that CAN be very fragile if you get too close to him. He did kill Andy his allotted 10 times, never received anything very useful though. The only NDE I had was on my last run when I went down to the pit to try to find something to imbue. He was cursed and fighting some melee rogues, things broke loose and came after him but I miss-clicked the bone prison and ended up face to face with 2 rogues in my own prison while cursed. It was a little hairy and took several full juves but he was able to overpower them.

I hope that whoever gets him next can upgrade his mercs Kelpie to elite, as he is pretty lacking in the damage department. But trust me Kelpie+HF+Decrep=standing still, so its a nice weapon.

I used fire golem for the whole act, CG doesn't have enough life to last long. Seemed to work well, but it really gets andy pissed off at you quick! You step in the big door and she is heading for you!

I know act 2 will be a little tougher with the emergence of some magic immunes and more ghosts, but its nothing that he can't handle.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

I've received Kenobi. With a bit of luck, I'll get him to A2 over the weekend. That may depend on the weather and on my alcohol consumption. :whistling:

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

SWITCHES for ACT 2H
This is a little early, but that's OK... don't be rushed. You may send your character to the next player as soon as you are ready. Please endeavor to send them by Sunday, May 15th. If you received your character late, do the best you safely can.

IMPORTANT: As always, you may not look at your Act 2 Hell character until you have sent your Act 1 character to the next player.

Also, since there are lots of players still out there in act 1... if you earn your deeds, and have already received your act 2 character, just pass it along to the person you *would* have sent your act 1 character to, according to the list.

Way to be optimistic Skunk!

Palpatine has been sent to Hoop, I'll wait patiently for the 'OL switcheroo!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Fun facts for this weeks swap:

Hoop76 and kestegs are swapping characters.
WoRG and jiansonz are swapping characters.
Ohomemgrande and I are swapping characters.
My track from A2 NM: Necro, Ahsoka, Necro, Ahsoka, Necro, Ahsoka.

Vader won't be ready for a couple days. He's at the cat 2 WP. Shouldn't have too much trouble with andy, just need to draw her into a corpse field. Bigger issue will be finding a worthwhile imbue...

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Gather 'round the fire, my friends, and I'll share with you a tragic tale of angst and woe...

[a quick description of my computer setup might help...I have four computers at my desk all connected via a KVM switch, and UPSs for all (well, most) of my computers...earlier this week my wife 'requested' that I clean up the rats nest of wires and cables, so I did. In doing so, I ended up putting my 'main' computer on port 4 of the KVM switch (it had been on port 1)...also, my son helped me route cables and ended up plugging the monitor into the regular power strip instead of the UPS, which escaped my notice at the time...]

So, last night I was up late playing Solo, pushing on to Andy so as to be ready for the switch early, for once. Solo had been performing very well, the Steeldriver made an excellent weapon for 'zerking bosses and PIs, and he hitpower crafted a scourge that dropped in the mausoleum with excellent results: ~160%ish ED, +12 mindam, 20IAS, 5%CtC Amp. His Countess runs provided a couple of Um's, so he made himself Duress and Crescent Moon in an eth Lance for the merc...things were progressing smoothly, there were some hard spots, but there always are in Hell, and nothing popped up that was overwhelmingly challenging. So, Solo was in Cats 3, things were going fine, he had just engaged a fanaticism spider (Auroch?) boss, had Howled away the minions and was proceeding to take down the boss...merc decided to chase one of the minions and ended up waking a couple more packs (goats and vamps, I believe..), and dragging them into the fight...no problem, Solo switched to Howl, and...my power went out...

Recall the bit about my monitor NOT being plugged into the UPS? Result: game is still running, but my monitor is off!! Well, I quickly try a few blind Howls...nothing!! (you can still hear fighting, the swoosh of fireballs/firewalls from the vamps...but no Howling is going on!!!) Panicing now, I pound on the Esc key to pause the game...still nothing...still hear fighting going on ingame!!! I jumped up around the desk, fumbling in the darkness (well, not really darkness, as my son's monitor (plugged into its UPS) is displaying his Starcraft2 game with a 'Connection to Battle.net Interrupted' message onscreen)...anyway, I managed to grab the power cord and yank it from the back of the computer...but not before I heard that awful, awful scream from Solo. I checked first thing this morning when the power came back, and yes, Solo had indeed gotten Deeds...

Turns out that if my KVM switch loses power, it reverts to port 1, regardless of which port it was on before...I'd never noticed this, as my main PC had been on port 1 until earlier this week...

I must admit that I was VERY angry and upset about this...but later this morning I learned something that helped put it in perspective: the reason my power went out last night is because a young man, about to graduate from High School, went out celebrating with his friends last night...despite the 'don't drink and drive' campain currently underway at his school, he chose to drive home anyway (did I mention it was raining pretty hard here last night?) and less than a mile from his home, ran off the road and took out two utility poles and a telephone junctionbox with his new truck (graduation present). He was pronounced dead on the scene by the emergency response crew.

...made me feel kinda petty about being upset over losing a character in a game, TBH...

Jiansonz, I believe this means you keep Offee for Act2.

Many thanks to Skunkbelly and the other players in the tournament...its really been fun, and I hope everyone else makes it through to Guardian...I'll be following the progress eagerly, especially on Organa, Yaddle, Binks, and Vader!

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

RIP Solo! I hadn't seen him, but from everything i've heard I thought for sure he'd make it through. That's a tragic way to go on several levels.

A sad farewell to WoRG also, it sounded like your characters always left your acts a fair bit stronger than they started.

Re: Skunkbelly's Ultimate Tournament Challenge 2011

Wow worg, that is a disaster. Tragic

Sorry to see you leave, and Solo too, he was the barb that could make it, I thought

That scourge sounded real nice

Yaddle will still be a bit, gotta move my dad home today/tomorrow (he was staying with us after a stroke). Yaddle has put on a few levels and feels a bit tougher now. Still haven't chosen a third power. I know which way I am leaning, but might wimp out and leave it unselected

Ps. crescent moon in a lance? That isn't possible right? Right? If it is I coulda made one a while ago! Would be awesome if it was true, although the 3 sock eth lance is long gone
