Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Alright! So, RandomGuy (Not good with names, LOL.. Sue me) the paladin has embarked on what has become my first SPF tourney.

Even though its a bit early for an update, I managed to somehow temporarily break Random.org and I have nothing to do until I can roll :) (I could just write my own program, but dammit, I'm frigging lazy..)

So far, he's in the process of clearing the cave on P8. Due to a lucky roll a few levels back, putting a point into Cold Resist, Coldcrow was a pushover. Only thing I can say right now is, WTB a point in Strength! PLEASE.. Lol, I have more energy than str, and it just feels.. so... wrong..

Ooh, it works now.. Back to the questing!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well, I've rolled two characters for this tourney, and naturally ended up with my two least played classes, assassin and druid.

First the assassin, who reached level 20:
Fire Blast: 3
Shock Web: 2
Blade Sentinel: 1
Psychic Hammer : 1
Cloak of Shadows : 1
Tiger Strike : 6
Dragon Talon : 2
Fists of Fire : 2
Dragon Claw : 2
Dragon Tail : 1

Can't complain too much about the skills, except for never rolling claw mastery. Tiger Strike + Dragon Talon made quick work of everything on p8, though I switched to p1 for Andariel. Managed to roll Dragon Tail as soon as it became available, which sped things up greatly. Cloak of shadows helped with crowd control in Halls of the Dead, but proved useless against Bloodwitch the Wild (extra strong cursed) when trying to get the cube.

And the druid, who reached 27:
Raven: 1
Poison Creeper: 2
Oak Sage: 5
Carrion Vine: 1
Summon Dire Wolf: 1 (item)
Werewolf : 2
Lycanthropy : 2
Werebear : 1
Maul : 2
Firestorm : 5
Molten Boulder : 2 (+1)
Arctic Blast : 2
Fissure : 1
Cyclone Armor : 3
Volcano : 1

Primary spam attacks were molten boulder and later fissure, and all the fire skills share a cooldown timer. I suppose this is good, because it gave me a chance to resummon minions which died very easily. Most mobs died fairly quickly on p5, but I switched to p1 to let my merc (rogue ice arrow) catch up to my level. Act bosses were all p1 as well. Duriel was a bit rough as always, but went down without too much trouble thanks to thawing potions and full rejuvs for emergencies. Meph was a pushover thanks to a nearby skill shrine; I kept my summons up as much as possible and my merc and I nuked from range. Finally Diablo, where I quickly realized that I didn't bring enough burst damage to break free from the bone prisons before eating a full-on lightning hose.

Overall, I think it would take incredible patience to reach a high level, simply because the skills become very diluted as more open up. Nothing like reaching level 24 and getting another point in werewolf or some other skill you haven't been using :(.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Well, Korweil has reached level 13 and just rescued cain. I am playing on players 8 but I'm not doing full clears, although I am doing all quests.

I am hoping to get a few points into the Combat tree although my mace mastery has gottien quite a few points.

Well good luck everyone!

Alright, it´s about time for a table!
(Note: I prefer to be the one maintaining the table - we don´t need to see it every other post...)

Condolences to the fallen. I see that the notorius HC killers Fouldog, Bloodwitch and Diablo got new notches in their belts.

Pete the Necromancer is doing quite well.
(btw, it may look like I´ve played a lot, but I really only got a head start. I hadn´t even finished up the rule writing when I was halfway through Act II.)

Pete was lucky with two things early on:
- Getting a point in Clay Golem at level 7
- Reaching STR 25 one or two levels earlier than what would be expected on average

So he could soon use a Scepter. Factor in some early points in Amplify Damage, and the early areas were no trouble. Javelins were used to keep the distance to LE bosses and death effects of CE and FE bosses.

Pete struggled quite a bit in late Act I, because the damage was lacking. He did pick up a rather powerful rare ethereal Axe (with self-repair) but it was damn slow...

In time for the showdown with Andariel, Pete had rolled a point in Iron Maiden (lucky!) so that and a large number of golems were used to kill her.

Got lucky again, and reached STR 41 on the last level-up in Act 1. In Act II, Pete started off by buying a Deadly Flail of Venom, and a short time later he gambled some pretty cool Short Spears. They had >70% ED. I guess I must have rolled both a +%ED prefix and a '+%ED and +AR' prefix. Pete still has these javelins on the switch.

He lured away Radament´s posse to a strategic point and made sure to destroy the corpses when they were defeated.

Pete found his third Eld rune in the Far Oasis, so he could cube up to a Tir and make a 'Steel' Flail, a weapon he still uses. (I quickly understood that buying wands for staffmods with skills I wanted to use was not the way to go at the moment - wands are too crappy weapons for fighting!).

Voodoo heads have been used ever since they started to drop. Since Pete has little life and I still have not rolled any points in Bone Armor, I tote around a non-magical Preserved Head with +1 to Bone Armor (and +1 DV and +1 RS).

Two cube recipes will be used many times, in order to improve my chances of getting good voodoo heads:
* Magical shield + Spiked Club + 2 skulls -> magical shield of Spikes. Item level gets set to 30, so I have a chance to get +1 to a skill tree with the four lowliest head types. No success here yet (other than improving the sales price for a couple of heads)
* Low quality armor + El rune + chippie -> Normal quality armor. This sets the ilvl to 1, so only level 1 and level 6 skills are possible. This is a way to see more heads with good runeword potential. My best result here is a head with bonuses to the very three 'level 1 and 6' skills I think I´ll appreciate the most in the long-term perspective: +1 Corpse Explosion, +2 Dim Vision and +2 Clay Golem.

The way I fight now is to let the golem engage things, then I wade in and hit monsters 'over the shoulder' of the golem. The excellent range of the Flail makes this possible.

I got a newfound respect for a skill I have never used before. In Halls of the Dead, I got annoyed with all those Returned. I figured Corpse Explosion wouldn´t help much since Returned have so little life. "What´s this, Poison Explosion? 28-86 damage. That´s not much, unless the monsters are wimpy. Hey, didn´t I just think that Returned have so little life!?" Yay, a very useful skill, this Poison Explosion. On about the third casting, whole packs of Retuned dropped like flies. I was quick to clear out corpses with my cheapest corpse destruction skill, Raise Skeleton.

I didn´t dare to go in clinch with Fangskin. I really love the fact that the golem is immune to knockback. Amped (/p8) Fangskin went to down after being hit by only four of Pete´s powerful javelins! This is still my method vs LE bosses.

Some lucky gambles so far. Circlet of Luck already in Lost City, Boots of Luck when I cleared the tombs. So now I engage in really "posh"/luxury gambling: for amulets. It´s almost amazing I have not been able to get anything with more MF than 14. One would think at least a Fortune one would have showed up by now. Oh well, just need to keep at it, I guess.

Other lucky finds:
TWO Angelic Halos, both in Claw Viper Temple. Nice future potential.
Gambled Tancred´s Hobnails, already at level 26 (when there was only 40% chance that the ilvl would be high enough to make the Hobnails even possible. So the chance was 1 in 2500 on each gamble!). It would be really cool and useful to find the amulet now.

Pete has over 40% fire + lightning resists, mostly thanks to some nice charms and his 19% Ocher Belt of Stability.

Skill rolls have been quite good. In the Summoning tree, I have 2 RS, 1 SM, 3 RSM, 2 Clay Golem and 2 Golem Mastery. P&B tree holds Teeth 4 (yuck!), CE 2, PD 1, PE 1 and Bone Spear 1. I have a point in all curses up to the important and useful DV, Life Tap and Terror. Two additional points in Amp and one in IM. Nothing feels wasted in the curses tree.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I agree with you about wands being lousy weapons. Vincent (level 16, Outer Cloister) is mainly a meleemancer assisted by a clay golem and 2 skeletons, and he's quite fond of his rare replenishing throwing knives...and at 16th he finally got a point in Poison Dagger. He has a 2-socket scepter on switch, but is waiting to fill the sockets till he can cube some better gems in Act 2 (fingers crossed).

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I've got a quick question about screenshots. I've got it set up so Prt Sc to take the snapshot, but I haven't a clue where it's being saved! Can anybody tell me where the default save is? (I've been searching...)

Kind of nice to see everything listed in a table... especially the R.I.P.'s. :(

Challenge, indeed! :)

I've got a quick question about screenshots. I've got it set up so Prt Sc to take the snapshot, but I haven't a clue where it's being saved! Can anybody tell me where the default save is? (I've been searching...)

They appear in the main D2 folder, under the names "Screenshot001.jpg", "Screenshot002.jpg" and so on.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

It appears to not be working for me. :( Prt Scr is working, in general. I can go to Paint and paste it in. But that has to be one shot at a time and is too much work when trying to play. I tried changing the Print Screen key in the configure menu, but no go. It is pausing a slit second, so I know it's doing something! Just cant' figure out where it's saving.

Oh well! Slapdash has just saved Cain and is still alive!

I have 5 points in Prayer, which seems like an utter waste to me. I use Defiance and just hit things with the occasional Sacrifice and Charge. My rare sceptor has LL so that's helpful and my attributes have been kind enough to give me lots of life though very low str for wearing equipment.

No Offensive Auras, yet and 1 point in everything else except Resist Fire which is 3.

Thus far, much easier than Aimless Andy! Having a rogue helps tremendously. ;)

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

If you're using Rune mods the screenshots are in the Runeword sudfolder of Diablo II folder.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

A little bit of progression with Hulk.

First he cleared the Cold Plains and the Caves up until Cold Crow. There he found his first and for the present only topaz. Then he entered the Burial Grounds and did the Crypt and the Masoleum before tackling with Blood Raven. In the Mausoleum he gained the 12th level and third point in bash. Bash was used to kill Blood Raven and after killing her Hulk talked to Kashya. With the rogue Blaise he entered the Caves and confronted the Cold Crow. Just few shots from CC and her escort and Blaise was dead. Then Hulk bashed CC to death.

It wasn't that easy. In the Cave level 2 the boss archer pack was touch and go. Running around in circles trying to separate the pack from the boss quaffing light healing potions once in a while. Eventually Hulk succeeded and was toe to toe with the LE boss. On switch he has the best throwing weapon he had found and that was used against both LE bosses: the archer in Cave2 and a LE Hungry Dead boss in the Mausoleum. With CC it was same tactics, running around the star shapped middle to separate the pack and then bash CC when she's alone.

Gambled all his money and got gloves with 10MF and boots with 7. This was just before CC but she didn't drop anything usefull.

[highlight]Hulk, Cold Plains, level 12[/highlight]

Stats (white):
Strength 44, Dexterity 34, Vitality 39 and Energy 23.

Skills:
War Cries: Howl, Find Potion and Shout(2).
Combat Masteries: Axe(2), Mace, Pole Arms and Spear. Hulk uses a scepter socketed with a skull and a pres/pdamage jewel.
Combat Skills: Bash(3). Hulk bash!!!!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Taking a break after rescuing cain for an update. So far, so good at /p8 for RandomGuy the paladin. First observation is that Full Clears of everything on P8 is fairly tedious, but the XP is certainly worth it. Found a nice Scepter that gives +2 to sacrifice, which, when combined with might is actually pretty damn nice for killing. If only it had a faster attack speed. :sleep2:

RandomGuy, Level 15 Paladin, Cleared Through the Dark Wood:

Stats:
Str: 35
Dex: 35
Vit: 46
Energy:39

Stat-wise, I kind of wish he had more str, but so far, its not terrible.

Skills:
1 Prayer
1 Resist Cold (Life-Saver against coldcrow)
4 Might (Such a waste of points.. But I guess beggars cant be choosers.)
3 Thorns (100% Useless on P8)
1 Sacrifice (Fun and useful, but how much blood does my pally really have?..)
3 Smite (Useless..)
1 Holy Bolt (Useless..)
1 Charge (Fun, but not as good as sacrifice.)

Taking a break now.. Maybe I'll play him later tonight!

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Vincent made it to Act 2!! Now to go for the Cube...

The demon queen was really rather easy. My usual technique is to lure her to the bottom of the stairway up to level 3 and escape up the steps when I need to, possibly going back to town for more potions. This time I only used the stairs once and didn't have to go to town. Of course all my minions bit the dust rather quickly, but I just kept stabbing her with my trusty throwing knife and guzzling the occasional potion. Her drop had nothing worth mentioning.

Vincent is now busy shopping in Lut Gholein. He is level 17, Str 40, Dex 39, Vit 44, and Ene 37. His skills are SM-2, RS-3, Clay Golem-3 (no golem mastery :( ), Teeth-3, Poison Dagger-2, Corpse Explosion-2, and Dim Vision-2. The only ones he's actually used so far are the summoning ones and poison dagger. Looking forward to Bone Spear, one of my favorites.

Vincent, 17th level Necromancer, Lut Gholein

Edit: Have Cube, will upgrade...

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

I'm in, although I don't know how far I'll get before finals catch up to me. I rolled a druid with a Holy Freeze merc, so this should be exciting.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Slapdash, the Charging Paladin is now resting in Lut Gholein! He revenged Aimless Andy and sent Fouldog to his grave. Only Blackbrow in the Jail level 2 gave Slapdash much trouble. Andy was surprisingly easy once I forgot about trying to Charge her and just used normal attacks!

Level 19 with 4 points in Charge (thus why I've taken to using it as much as mana will hold out) and my 1 point in Salvation and 1 in Defiance are really the only skills he's currently using.

Notable finds: Artic Binding (love the Cold Resist!), Felloak (which he used for quite awhile until he found a rare mace with more damage, and Leadcrow (which I intended to use on switch as a ranged attack, but he's just not a ranged type of guy. ) Otherwise, lots of lots of charms, bringing his resistances into the 40s for both Lightning and Cold. Running with 43 MF and lots of rare items. :)

Visala, his cold rogue, is still using the same 3-socketed bow she's been using since Day 1, but haven't found anything better.

Fun stuff, here! :)

He'll help out Atma soon!

Slapdash, Level 19 Paladin, Lut Gholein

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Vincent just made level 20. After clearing the Halls of the Dead and grabbing the Cube, he cleaned out the sewers of Lut Gholein and combed the desert as far as the Far Oasis. He is currently exterminating bugs in the Maggot Lair. In spite of all this vocational experience, he hasn't been lucky in the useful items department. He's added a 3rd skeleton to his entourage, and switches back and forth between a jagged kris of venom (more damage) and his replenishing throwing knives (range). I don't care much for curses, but he's finding Dim Vision helpful. Still no Bone Spear...

Vincent the Necromancer, level 20, Far Oasis.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Hulk rescued Cain last night. Bash is quite nice against champions. Hulk was surrounded by three champions goatmen in Tristram and started Bashing. The knockback meant that he could just turn around and bash each one in turn and they couldn't land a hit. No reds consumed but two blues were.

Stats (white/blue): strength 49/53, dexterity 37/40, vitality 43/43 and energy 26/29.

Skills:
Warcries: Howl 3(4), Find Potion and Shout 2.
Combat masteries: Axe 2, Mace 1(2), Pole Arm 2, Throwing 0(1) and Spear
Combat skills: Bash 3.

Found this:

Code:
Cracked Jawbone Cap
Defense: 11
Durability: 3 of 8
(Barbarian Only)
Required Strength: 25
Required Level: 6
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 5
Fingerprint: 0x46aa6400
+1 to Howl (Barbarian Only)
+1 to Throwing Mastery (Barbarian Only)
+1 to Mace Mastery (Barbarian Only)

I'm using it mainly to boost the mace mastery as Hulk is still using the sceptre as a weapon and hasn't found fourth topaz. I'm trying to find nice one-hand axe so that when he finds the fourth topaz he can change weapon.

But on the other hand one never knows in which mastery the next skillpoint will land. I'm not sure though if I'm brave enough to go with two-handed weapon.

P.S. I hate the Dark Wood when you have to personally try to find each and every carver. I really appriciate the rogue on finding the stragglers.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Harry the druid has killed Blood Raven and Cold Crow and is about to venture into the Stony Field. The going has been surprisingly easy so far. For the first ten levels Harry only learned summoning and shapeshifting skills. (At 11 and 12 I got Firestorm and Molten Boulder.) Ravens and a wolf provide good crowd control, while Werebear/Werewolf and poison creeper are good damage sources. I actually stopped to check if the game was on /players 8 because I was one-shotting fallen shamans in the Hole (or the Cave, or whatever it is in the Cold Plains). This may be because I found a ridiculous number of experience shrines (3 in the Blood Moor, 2 in the Cold Plains), so I'm a little higher level than I'm used to at this point.

I learned something interesting. The range on a spears is large enough that blinded enemies can't see you while you smack them. The range is also large enough to swing over the shoulder of my wolf, so fights have been very safe so far.

Here are my stats and skills so far:
Strength - 25
Dexterity - 34
Vitality - 40
Energy - 36

Firestorm - 1
Molten Boulder - 1
Werewolf - 2
Lycanthropy - 1
Werebear - 1
Raven - 3
Poison Creeper - 2
Spirit Wolf - 1

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Vincent passed away at level 21 in the Claw Viper Temple, done in by Fangskin & Co.

Re: Tournament: The Randomly Challenged II

Hulk just cleared the Black Marsh. I was hoping Tir and El from countess, but I got this. No way I'm making Stealth to Hulk as he's wearing a mail with three chipped topazes.

Got level 16 and that brought Increased Stamina which was kinda nice, but I'm waiting for Find Item. The gods of Diablo are definately saying something as this dropped.

More on stats and skills after Andy.
