Problems with multiple patches.

Problems with multiple patches.

I've recently re-organized my files on my computer, and I now keep 2 shortcuts on my desktop, 1 for 1.11b and 1 for 1.07, but the problem is that my 1.07 characters does not show up in the character select window in 1.07.

I'm sure I have separate "installs" and that 1 shortcut is going to 1.07 and 1 to 1.11. 1.11 works fine, but 1.07 does not show my characters even though they indeed are in the save folder for my 1.07 install. Is there any way to tell the game where to look for characters? Have anyone experienced this before?

thanks

If everything worked before, first question that comes to mind is: Did you maybe accidentally upgrade the char to 1.11?

Edit: Char should be in the Diablo II/save folder, not in the (for example) Diablo II 1.07/save folder.

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

This is how I did it!

I had 1.07 installed on my computer, then I took the diablo 2(1.07) folder and put it on a external hd, then I disconnected the hd, reinstalled a new d2, updated that to 1.11b, and then put the 1.07 back on my computers desktop. never ran the update while 1.07 was on the actual computer.
Is tehre any way to check if the characters somehow was updated to 1.11? I'll spontaniously die if I did, all my sweet, sweet 1.07 itamz would be 1.11 crap if that's what happened :sad2:

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

The game may be looking for them in the save directory listed in the registry.

To check, start -> run, regedit.
And look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Blizzard Entertainment > Diablo 2
There will be a line there for the save path. Try placing your 1.07 characters in that directory.

I don't know if there is a way to tell the different versions to look in different places for the saves. I currently use just one save folder for all versions, which is pointed to by the registry.

I'll try that, is it posible to use the same save directory for different versions of the game? ie if I keep my 1.11 and 1.07 characters together and launch 1.11, will not the 1.07 chars be updated or something?

EDIT: I did what espr said, and the save path is where my 1.11b chars are stored, so should I just put my 1.07 characters in that folder? Will anything 'bad' happen to my 1.07 characters (like getting updated) if I place them together with the 1.11b chars?

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

I'm pretty sure the charecters only get upgraded if they are used in a newer-version-game.

Yes, you must place them there because the game is searching for them there and not in the 1.07 folder. You can however put your stashes wherever you want. They won't upgrade to newer version.

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

Ok I see, yeah stashes are everywhere  since you can manually locate them via atma, so you are saying I have to put my 1.07 characters in my 1.11b save folder, and they will not me updated by doing so? (just want to be 100% sure)

Zarf just do it!

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

Ok1 :badteeth:

Thanks for the help, I was just worried the 1.07 chars would get updated to 1.11b if I ran 1.11b with 1.07 chars in the directory :hide:

edit: it works now, but the 1.07 characters shows up in the 1.11b game as well, does it matter at all or is it just to avoid opening them while running 1.11b?

edit2: @jj: ok I see, well I only have 2 1.07 characters, but it's still a good idea, I'lll look into it later

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

I think this is what Trenshadows's version switcher does, changes the save location in the registry. I would look for a more elegant solution like that rather than just dumping everything in one folder. I don't think the chars will upgrade until you launch them in 1.11 but it will be too easy to accidentally do that if they are all right there.

Edit: Just reading up on Trenshadows (which does in fact do this) and another idea is to make a separate windows user account for 1.07 (or 1.11, probably whichever you play less). You'll still have to get into the registry for the user account but you'll only have to do it once.

Zarfen: Just a word of advice. Back those sweet 1.07 characters/items on a USB drive or something. If you accidentally "upgrade" one of them you have a chance of restoring it.

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

As long as you don't load the 1.07 chars in 1.11b they'll be fine.

The problem I had with Trenshadows version switcher was that it disabled RRM/RWM for 1.11 (as it launches in a different directory, with different tags than required to use the mods).

If you are worried about the chance of loading your 107/109 chars in 1.11, another option would be to keep separate save folders, but just rename each version's save folder to the name/dir listed in your registry before loading up that particular version. It should be possible to make a bat file to do this automatically for you as well, or a bash script if you are on *nix.

Re: Problems with multiple patches.

trenshadow version switcher works fine with rrm rwm. i have 1.07, 1.09, 1.10 ( median and plugy) abd 1.11 rrm rwm and everything works fine
