So I went to see if my system met the sysreqs for HGL.. I figured it wouldnt, its 7 or so years old, but I didnt know Id fail so badly lol.

Im getting a new Vidcard for Christmas, but I need a DVD-rom to play HGL? Ive gotten along fine without one so far, so I really need one?

Anyhoo, It looks pretty nifty, anyone in the Beta that can share their experiences?

I'm in the beta now, and I love the game. I haven't seen the req's for the final game yet, so I can't answer your other questions.

That game will put an end to D2 in my game playing career. Mythos is great as well btw, and it's slated to be free.

I'm in beta also. I will tell you that I have 1gb of ram and i've had a few warnings of 'low virtual memory' in high traffic areas.

The game is great but I might upgrade a bit first before I purchase.

System Req's:

OS: Windows XP with SP2 or Windows Vista
* Processor: 1 .8GHz or faster (2.4GHz for Vista)
* RAM: 1GB or more (2GB for Vista)
* Video: DirectX 9.0c/10 compatible device w/ 128MB RAM or better and Pixel Shader 2.0 support; requires NVIDIA GeForce 6200/ATI Radeon 9000 chipset or greater
* Audio: DirectX 9.0c compatible device
* Disc drive: 8x DVD or faster
* Hard drive: 6 GB or more free space
* Input: Keyboard and mouse
* Internet: Connection required for multiplayer

So it looks like you'll need the DVD player.

I tried the SP-demo. But i was extremely disappointed. Everything about this game is mediocre at best. Perhaps the beta is different from the demo? Have anyone played both and can compare them?

I have heard EA will be offering a direct-2-drive download option. So you won't actually *need* a DVD rom. You can get one very cheap though.

I have been keeping up with HG:L news as much as I can, but there are still some things not clear to me.

After completing the game for the first time, can you play through it again on Nightmare, and then again on Hell, just as in D2?

Will SP characters be kept locally, so that an ATMA-style muling program can be developed? If I can't collect sets/uniques, the game simply won't have the same 'macro-game' as D2, and won't be as appealing.

I know about elite mode. Sounds like the equivalent of /players8. Luck sounds like the equivalent of MF. So it sounds like it has the *potential* to have the same endgame/macrogame as D2. But it will depend on whether or not you can collect items in an unlimited stash.

Are you talking graphically?

It's worth remembering that when D2 came out, it's 640x480 resolution was considered substandard.

It is other elements (depth of character development, gameplay, variety of items, etc) that made the game great. I can live with mediocre graphics in HG:L if the other elements are present.

Agreed. How many games with mediocre graphics became legends, like civ or UFO. On the other hand games with cutting edge graphics and little else seem to fail. Graphics to me are one of the nice to have's but a basic interface is fine categories.

IMO, graphics, although nice to look at, can make the game literally unplayable.

Speaking of which, my 2 year old machine (and I haven't benefited from its costly decent-for-its-time specs at all, which I regret) can barely meet the requirements, so I might give it a go!

Its said that there will be no single player due to security reasons. They don't want people accessing the code or something like that. However there was an option mentioned that allowed you to play a single player like experience online, it sounded a bit like open battle.net. Oh that's right, you can play for free in an open online like experience or something. Everyone else has to pay to play similar to realms in d2 but your paying for it. I wonder if D3 will have sp? Rumour has it its built of WoW tech.

What I really want to know is how big Hellgate is. Its got to be bigger geographically with more monsters and items. I like the idea that you can take attributes out of items and craft them into new items. That sounds very addictive.

What he said.

I've played through the demo 3 times each with a marksman and a blademaster. I wasn't disappointed at all. I see great potential in the full product, but only time will tell.

In comparison to D2, here's what I liked/disliked (solely based on the demo):

Likes:
- 3D. The fact that you can go first-person with a marksman makes for a weird half-life/D2 mixed-up situation. Like half-life with random items and levels. I like it. It's of course not as refined as a pure FPS, but I don't really care.
- The blademaster dual-wielding through enemy hordes looks plain cool. Sometimes that's all you need.
- Health/mana boosters stack in your inventory.
- You can dismantle crap gear and use the scraps to upgrade your items. Now there's no reason at all anymore to leave stuff on the ground.
- You can socket and unsocket upgrades swapping them around if you come across better gear. Imagine being able to unsocket jewels for reuse. That's good. Number crunching for the win.
- The level and loot randomization is just the kind of crack that made D2 so addictive.
- The skills: it seems that many skills are useful in different situations. I only got to see a very few skills in the demo, but I used all of them.
- Tactics: having to apply tactics to win a difficult battle is refreshing.

Dislikes:
- No more static maps. This is standard for BNet play, but my SP lewt hunter instincts will need some adjustment to this fact. On the plus side: the maps I encountered in the demo aren't that expansive, so this may not be a problem after all.
- No LCS. There's no intuitive way at all to see the damage you deal. There's a number listed in the upper-left corner of each item saying how 'good' it is, but the formula determining that is more like a black box. As a fan of micro-planning builds, the lack of info disturbs me.
- Hotkey overload. If all skills are useful in different situations I'll run out of keyboard shortcuts and fingers. Complex play confuzzles me.
- Tactics: having to apply tactics to win a difficult battle removes a bit of the mindless hackenslash mentality.

There's also the fact that in order to get access to cool content online, you'll have to shell out 10$ per month. I won't say I'm opposed to that because I have no clue if it will be worth the cash. If the paying customers will start looking down on the 'freeloading hobos' that would be, eehm. interesting.

Loved the fact that the engineer could recover items used to create drones when needed. Its like being able to pull your insight out of your iron golem. Awesome stuff.

Hmm I still don't understand how this game works. You'd have to authenticate to a server and submit yourself to lag even when you want to play alone?

Being forced to play online is a BIG no to me.

AFAIK, you can play offline just like in D2. And just like with Bnet, you can't port your chars to the online world. For MP you'll have to use an online char, since I remember reading that no LAN functionality will be present.

Ah ty for the prompt answer O_o (hella prompt indeed).

That's better, but still seems kinda broken.

Don't get me wrong, I'm dying to try it out, but sometimes it just seems developers forget about LAN features too often.

I've been having great fun with what I've had time to play in the beta (no more NDA either), it has that all important "where did the last 2 hours go" quality. You can turn some average items into really good items with all the upgrades you can give them too, taking away some of the desperate hoping for a better weapon that D2 had when you played through it the first couple of times.

You can get more detailed information on the damage output of weapons if you go to the see item details screen. I think the number displayed on the weapon is some combination of damage, rate of fire, and other special properties.

The game is actually playable on medium graphics for me, with a bit of slow down if theres lots of big explosions and spells everywhere, with a system that barely scrapes past the minimum requirements (AthlonXP 2200, 1GB RAM, Radeon X1600 Pro), so with a reasonable graphics card it should run fine. I'll probably be playing it as soon as it comes out, but I won't be subscribing until I actually see if there's going to be a lot of new stuff, or if I use up the character slots too quickly.

LAN support was left out for "security reasons" apparently, presumably to try and stop various bots etc.

Expect it. Most of the games I've seen with a split free/paid populace quickly stop cranking out any serious amount of free content.

"You should get an <item X>"
"Isn't that a drop from <paid-only area>?"
"Fr00b, huh? Guess you're SooL then..."

I've played the demo through with each of the two classes, and it was OK... but I've universally read that the demo is nothing compared to the real game, and that makes it exciting. I'll definitely buy it... whether it replaces D2 for me is another question. I didn't find the combat as interesting as D2... but then, I was only level 4 or 5 when the demo ended, so I'm sure it gets better.

When does the demo end? I played a little bit yesterday, got to level 4 with a Blademaster and got stuck in a Garden Tunnels or something like that. Had no idea where to go after that?

That's all, folks. I've played through several times and stranded there as well.

Only 6 more days...

Let's trust the beta testers saying that the demo gives a poor impression of what comes next. FSS may have shot themselves in the foot with this demo.
