Why is Smite so effective against Ubers?

Why is Smite so effective against Ubers?

Can anyone explain this? Also, why does your weapon matter (besides useful mods like resists, ctc, etc.) with a Smiter? I keep seeing Grief PB is unquestionably top choice because of it's awesome average damage. Why does it matter?

Re: Why is Smite so effective against Ubers?

The main reason that smite is so good is that it is ITD against EVERYTHING. ITD weapons are only ITD against normal monsters, so it doesn't help against ubers, while smite is always ITD and unblockable. Smite can also activate crushing blow, which cuts 1/10 of the life of bosses like the ubers. Also, with lifetap, you can leech life off them too.

As for the weapon, the speed of the weapon determines how fast you can smite. Also the mod +xxx damage will add damage to smite, unlike other mods like ED%

Grief is so popular for ubers because it is fast in a phase blade, and adds 340-400 damage (most of any weapon), which is absolutely devastating. It is also a good weapon to zeal with. With optimal gear, smites with a grief can do 5k damage, while zeals with it can do up to 9k.

I know it might have been asked before but, I thougth ED% worked with smite damage?

Re: Why is Smite so effective against Ubers?

Not on the weapon. Only from other stuff, like fortitude (armor). But ED on a weapon does not work with smite damage.

Re: Why is Smite so effective against Ubers?

You have to distinguish between on and off weapon ed%. On weapon ed% is the 400% ed on say a botd. Off weapon ed% is the 300% on fort or the 400% of phoenix. While on weapon damage is normally harder to obtain, and thus more valuable, it is useless for the smiter, who cannot use ed% that directly effects the weapon.

Smiters are good for ubers due to...
- Fast Attack that Focuses on a Single Target
- Unblockable Attack
- ITD Against All Targets
- Massive Damage in Combination with Grief.

i'll just quote Grimborn from the Amazon Basin here, i can't say it any better than this:

The Poorman knows about the cookie-cutter builds for Tristram: They’re all based on uber itamz: HoZ, TGods, Dracul’s, Guardian Angel or Last Wish, Gores, Grief, Astreon’s and the like.

The Poorman scoffs at all such treasure. He attacks instead with superior tactics. He defends with wile and subtlety.

But The Poorman detects a kernel of sense in those cookie-cutter builds: They all use Smite. No other solo attack is as well suited to the Uber Three, and its advantages are undimmed by the bling-bling other players insist on piling atop it.

Ranged attackers get steamrolled by the Big Three. Meph and Baal in particular leap aggressively down the throats of solo players, and the friendly minion able to stand in their way hasn’t yet been born. Even if she could stay on her feet longer than a few seconds, the solo ranged warrior cannot bring to bear any attack that stacks up against the huge hit points sported by each of the Three.

Mephisto has almost unbreakable (110%) immunities to lightening and poison. Baal has the same immunity to cold. Diablo has 95% resists to all four elements. Each of the three can blow through a standoff player before she gets near to killing them.

That leaves melee, although that smackey-face style of fighting is almost as lopsided in favor of the Three. Chopping through their minions is a chore for Sisyphus because new ones spawn faster than the old ones are dispatched. While the melee player is hacking them down, the Big Boys lop huge chunks out of the most intrepid fighter’s life ball. Without high priced trinkets, few melee characters live long enough to catch a second wind, let alone get close to the taste of victory.

But Smite stands above its melee brethren because it has three qualities crucial to success. First, it is an uninterruptible attack. Second, it always hits, regardless of the enemy’s defense and blocking abilities. And third, it can carry piggyback just enough of the melee fighter’s tricks to reach the goal line.

The Poorman scrounges through the slag heaps of gear discarded by others to find those few, overlooked yet crucial items that he needs.

Smite does not deliver a wide variety of mods that routinely appear on various gear:
Elemental damage from any source
Enhanced damage on a weapon
Deadly strike
Life leach (except via Life Tap) and mana leach
+ to min/max damage.
Adds ‘xx’-‘yy’ to damage mods, which appear on many items such as General Tan’s flail, Gull dagger, etc.

But by pure fortuity, Smite does work with just the right mods for solo Tristram play:
Crushing blow
Open wounds
Base weapon speed
IAS
EIAS from Fanaticism
As describe above, these features are indispensable to The Poorman’s build.

also worth mentioning is that Smite can set of CtC spell effects (like LIFETAP!) and smite will leach back from 'tap.

FYI: Grimborn successfully completed an Uber trist run wearing the following gear:

The advantages of The Poorman’s particular combination of items are discussed below, as are several alternate approaches with equally humble gear. Here’s what he takes with him to Harrogath:

Helm__________Iratha’s Crown (socketed with Ort): 60% LR, 30% FR
2nd helm______Plain white crown, socketed with 3 perfect rubies
Ammy__________Rare +1 Paly skills, +1 ENG, +39 Life, +19 All Resists
Weap__________Magic Bone Wand of Life Tap (105 lvl 6 charges), socketed with 2 Shaels
Armor_________Darkglow ring mail (socketed with Ort): +10 all resists, another 30% LR, +5 to Max all resists
2nd armor_____Treachery (Shael-Thul-Lem) breast plate
Shield________White crown shield with +43 all resists, socketed with 4 Pdiamonds, for a total of +119 to all resists
Gloves________Crafted (blood) heavy gloves with 8% crushing blow and +18 life
Ring 1________Raven Frost
Ring 2________Rare ring with 1 STR, 10 DEX, +11 life and +7 to all resists
Belt__________Crafted (blood) belt with 10% Open Wounds, +3 mana and +20 life, all 12 slots filled with fat purple pots
Boots_________Goblin Toe light plated boots (25% cb)
Charms________39 inventory slots are taken with a motley assembly of charms totaling 10% FR, 29% LR, 2 STR, 7 mana and 423 life. The 40th slot is empty
Stash_________A cube (holding the eye, brain and horn to open the portal to Uber Tristram), the second crown helm, the backup armor and four small life charms. Every other slot is filled with Fat Purples
also worth noting, this was done in HARDCORE.

i can't link you to the full tale here, but a quick google search will turn it up.
