Why have mana leech on a caster helm?

Blizzard is confusing me. On arreat summit, if you look at crafted items you see "Caster Items". A caster helm for example has 1-4% mana leech. Why? Mana leech isnt working on spells so this is completely useless?

Please enlighten me.

Many mods on items are not particularly useful. It's just something you have to get used to.

It is still excusable for randomly generated magic items, but for custom items you craft yourself?

Uniques and sets are cluttered with them as well. Blizzard's item design is sometimes just incomprehensible.

Well if you pick a class that can cast and melee with out getting killed why not?
Yes blizzard picks some stupid things to do with set items and crafted items but they could be useful if you exploit the game to its full potential.

Just take Tal's Mask for example, for a sorc set helm it's ruddy awful
For general use however it's brilliant.

The current crafting recipes were set early in LOD and before 1.10 mana leach was useful for sorceresses at low levels because mana potions were not sold at vendors.

It's potentially useful if you were trying an untwinked/single-pass melee character (something like an Avenger). Considering you could have the helm by Act3-4, it may be the most reliable early-game mana leech there is for untwinked/single-pass. Pyrohemia's point about buying mana potions is valid too.

<--- Not exactly the most common scenario, but as stephan said, there isn't a lot of rhyme or reason to the pre-set stats on a lot of items. This one isn't really any worse than many.
