What's a "cow run"

I have sorc in nightmare - about lvl 46.
I keep hearing about "cow runs".
Where are the cows?
What does the run do for you?
How do I do it?
thx in advance

Re: What's a "cow run"

If you've beaten Baal in any given difficulty setting, you can go to the Secret Cow Level in that same difficulty setting. Since you're in Nightmare, you've beaten Normal, so you can go to the Cow level in Normal.

Go to Tristram in the Stony Field, act I, and in the west corner you'll find the body of Wirt. Click it, and he'll give you some gold and his leg. Take his leg, go to the Rogue Encampment, buy a Tome of Town Portal from Akara, and put that in the Cube along with the leg. Transmute, and a red portal will open to the Cow level.

It gives you (some) experience as well as a lot of items (There's quite a few cows there..)

The reason most people do it is for jewelry (charms, rings, amulets, jewels), some runes (a lot of monsters) or socketable items (If you run without MF-gear)

Re: What's a "cow run"

Also if you kill the Cow King you can't open the portal again in that difficulty.

Oh right, forgot to mention that. The Secret Cow Level always has this four-wall hovel somewhere, and in there is the Cow King. I think he's always Lightning-Enchanted, so if you're hurting cows in that region, you've got plenty of warning when he's taking damage.

Re: What's a "cow run"

This is also the only location in the game where you can obtain the Cow King set. Correct me if I'm wrong; I believe the boots and gloves can both be found in all three difficulties, but the armor can only be found in nightmare or hell.

Generally, people who do multiple cow runs (usually in hell) find a Stony Field waypoint that's right next to the stones for quicker access to Wirt's Leg. Cow runs used to be the ultimate area to gain experience back in the day, but Blizzard nerfed it. But as Andronicus said, since there are SOO many enemies it's a good place to find white or socketed items for RWs. ....And can hell cows drop all runes? I haven't looked at Ulrik's rune-finder guide for a while...

I'm pretty sure they can (read from some place I don't remember. Well at least I'm 100% sure they can drop a ber! Reference to that crazy lightning sorc cow run video.

Re: What's a "cow run"

Duh... ATMA drop calc!

According to this, it says on /p1 the odds a Zod will drop is ~41,000,000-to-1. You never know, you could get really lucky!

Re: What's a "cow run"

One additional point the above posters neglected to make is that you should make sure you keep your pc's volume turned up, so you can laugh your *** off at the "moo"s. Your assless self will be thankful you did.

Agreed. I never play with the sound on, but if I do it's because I'm doing cow runs. :p

And, iirc, Drixx got his Zod drop in cows, so they do exist.

Re: What's a "cow run"

Thanks, everyone.
I have Wirt's leg from the nightmare level - can I use that one?
Or, does it disappear when I go back to normal difficulty.
I'm pretty sure I picked it up first time through normal - don't remember what I did with it though.

Re: What's a "cow run"

You need to find the Wirt's in the same difficulty as where you open the portal. You can switch between difficulties & retain the leg, but you can only open the portal in same difficulty as where you found it.

Re: What's a "cow run"

Also each time you save and exit you can get a new leg.

Generally the way a cow run works is as follows:
1. Start a new game
2. go to tristram and get a new leg
3. open portal
4. kill all cows except the king*
5. save and exit and repeat

*if you kill the king you won't be able to open the portal again.

Re: What's a "cow run"

I tried getting a new leg, but it wouldn't let me pick it up (I had the leg from the NM difficulty level in my backpack - maybe that's why I could not pick up the new leg).

Anyway, tried opening a cow portal with the leg I had and it worked - although the leg was from the NM difficulty. It worked anyway.

Now, the problem I'm having is killing all those cows. They're just overwhelming me. There are just too many. Like, thousands and thousands. You think because I had the NM leg? Or is it always like that?

I have a stragegy for dealing with huge numbers of monsters - but I need a building with a door - haven't found one yet in the cow level. When I find a door, then I go into the room and then when the monsters try to come in after me I just kill them off one-by-one. I always look for a room with a door if I'm facing massive numbers of creatures.

How do I survive against hordes of cows. Each one is pretty weak but all together there are just too many - for awhile I can keep from getting surrounded but eventually they get behind me. I'm thinking of getting into a corner instead of finding a doorway - but it's clearly not as secure.

By the way, the mooing is hysterically funny.

Re: What's a "cow run"

Well there are characters that can kill them easily, no matter the number. Lightning Fury amazon, Blizzard sorceress or Lightning sorceress are popular builds. Lightning trap assassin works for lower player setting as well. You can't open a portal with a leg from another difficulty, and there is no doors in cow level, but there is a small fence labyrinth that you could use instead(no need though, if you have strong enough character killing all those cows shouldn't be a problem).

Re: What's a "cow run"

If you want to run the cow level multiple times you will eventually need a better runner. But if you only aim is to complete the level than the best trick is to stay still. If you go wandering around you will eventually get surrounded. Just take a few steps to lure the cows near to you and do not move again till you kill all the pack. And than move a little again.

Re: What's a "cow run"

No, Libre is right, you can open the portal in normal with NM leg. I did that with my first char for sure, haven't been to cow level since. Maybe after I finish my furyzon (well, actually most probably then, several times).

Yeah, he is right (my bad). You can't use the leg from lower difficulty settings to open Moo Farm portal in higher difficulties though(makes sense).
