What are your ping times?

What are your ping times?

I'm connecting to USWest from Australia and I'm raking it a ping of about 200 in the morning but it shoots up to about 600-800 in the evening.

What are your ping times? I'm sure there's a program which allows me to determine the ping times of different realms but am not sure how effective it is.

hmmm. Off topic-noob question....

*takes cover behind my desk, in case of flying weapons*

What does ping mean? I've always wondered. My p2p software talks about ping too and counterstrike had it too. Is it good to have a high ping?

5-40? Wow... that's fantastic! Even with 200, it's smooth but 5-40 is almost like playing the game on your hard drive :)

From a non-technical gamer: ping essentially means the amount of time it takes for data to be sent from your computer to the target computer. So, the shorter the ping, the better the connection.

I'm probably wrong in my terminology but that's how I see it.

I live in the upper midwest, and my ping to USEast is 60-80ms at a good time, sometimes it gets above 150ms and some casted spells (especially teleport) start desynching.

It's actually the round trip time (RTT); the time it takes from when your computer sends a packet until the remote host responds.

For those who may be curious, ping is an acronym for Packet InterNet Groper.

In any case your ping rate might be vitial if you get the zaka that baal
just dropped or not. But who cares, with all the pickit users out there these
days. Ping isn't very essential in diablo, but better ping if a plus. :)

Just type /fps when you get into a game, it tells you your ping. type /fps again to turn it off. if anything, you can use netstat. you go to start > run > type in command.com and then when the dos window pops up, just type netstat and iirc it not only tells you what server you are connected to, but the ping as well.

I know the /fps function which is how I know my ping... what I was referring to is an app which allows you to ping all the realms to see which has the best err.. ping time :)

A simple solution is to go into dos prompt and type "ping hostname" where
host name is replaced by uswest.battle.net, useast.battle.net, asia.battle.net
or europe.battle.net. And compare response times.

Thats pretty good. From QLD to USEast via Sydney I get 300-350, and it's about 50 less to West. If your ping goes up so much in the evenings it's probably your ISP being overloaded with people off work/school. My ping does go up in the evenings, but only by 50 or so.

wow.. which realm you guys are on? I on asia and i get 300 normally and up to 5k pings at times.... should u think i change realm already?

well i live in San Diego, so i believe im pretty close to the west server. My ping is almost always 50 ... rarely it will drop as low as 20 and as high as 80. Very unlikely that it is ever not in that range

Europe 36-78 (this is my usual ping)

When jumpy lag 96
When big lag (very annoying to play) 125-148
Big lag (impossible to play, you keep dying here) x-350
Extreme lag (usually followed by disconnection) x-4000

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think that the ping counter is a great gauge to "test waters" before diving into a mob. I always check my ping counter before doing cow runs. If you're not careful, you could be dead in the blink of an eye with horrible ping rates.

I'm going to keanek's advice and ping all the servers to see what I can get :) Thanks!

Yeah, but I actually play mostly in USEast because most of my friends play there. I have the /fps thing on all the time.

On USEast I average ~75 may be 10 to 15 higher or lower at times. I'd guess antthing under 150 would be pretty smooth. Being lagged killed hasn't been a problem for me I think it's happened a couple times in the last year, but I'm also sc.
