If I up a venom ward breast plate would it then be a duiel's shell cuirass with the same mods as before just better defence? Not sure how it works .....

Upgrading just changes the base item type. So your venom ward curiass will have better defense and a higher strength requirement than the breast plate version.

So, you can 'upgrade' even uniques?!
