The Useless Builds Thread

The Useless Builds Thread

Hi folks  !

I've been thinking about this thread for some time, after realizing that an increasing number of people are getting bored with this everlasting ladder season. If you watch carefully the D2 community, you'll see we have two main categories of people :

- The ones that don't want to invest too much time in the game. These ones will check the first cookie-cutter build they find, will build that exact same character, and will play around with it.

- The ones, a bit more experienced, that will try out new possibilities by themselves. Some of these characters may work, more or less efficiently.

Nowadays, because of this endless ladder season, a majority of people has accumulated enough wealth to be able to "waste" a part of it in a third category of builds. You got it : The Useless Builds !

First of all, what is a useless build exacly ? I'd say it's mainly a build that will focus on a very specific (and often, very secondary) aspect of the gear. Note that I said : "the gear", not "the build", nor "the game". Indeed, you can have very specific builds that are cookie-cutter ones. For example : a javazon cows killer, a lightning sorceress Countess killer, etc... That is not the useless build spirit. The purpose of a useless build isn't to fulfill any game's goal, but on the contrary, to bring something new and funny to it, that will generally bring absolutely nothing to the players team, and/or the character itself .

I will give some examples, from my own experience, and I expect you people to go on this way, by letting me know your own Useless Builds !

[HIGHLIGHT]Useless Build #1 : Run Like The Wind :[/HIGHLIGHT]

This one is my favourite useless character. She's an Assassin, FRW-oriented. She does nothing but run. And believe me, she runs like hell ! Level 20 Burst of Speed, Vigor aura, FRW-oriented stuff & charms.

Here is a copy/paste from my notes. This is only a draft, it gives some general guidelines, but isn't a definitive guide at all :

Code:
Level 20 Burst Of Speed : 61%
Magic Circlet : 30%
The Cat's Eye : 30%
Harmony Long Bow (Level 10 Vigor) : 36%
Trang Oul Scales : 40%
M'avina's Tenet : 20%
Aldur's Advance : 40%
40 Inertia Small Charms (3% FRW) : 120%
TOTAL : 377% FRW
[HIGHLIGHT]Useless Build #2 : Fireworks Multizon :[/HIGHLIGHT]

This Multizon wears the maximum gear with "% chance to cast XXX on striking / swinging / killing a monster", where XXX must have a cool visual effect (Nova, Lightning, Fire Bolt, Poison Nova, etc...). The purpose is self-explanatory ! Throw a bunch of arrows, and watch the fireworks !

Copy/paste of my notes (same remark as above) :

Code:
hellmouth : 4% chance to cast level 12 firestorm on striking / 2% chance to cast level 4 meteor on striking
goldstrike arch : 5% chance to cast level 7 fist of heavens on striking
carrion wind : 8% chance to cast level 13 twister on striking
wisp projector : 10% chance to cast level 16 lightning on striking
atma's scarab : 5% chance to cast level 2 amplify damage on striking
m'avina's caster : 10% chance to cast level 15 nova on striking (3 items)
delirium : 11% chance to cast level 18 confuse on striking
"of chain lightning" : amulets, rings, weapons (25)[5% chance/level 3/on attack], (35)[8% chance/level 3/on attack], (45)[8% chance/level 5/on attack]
[HIGHLIGHT]Useless Build #3 : IronGolem Character :[/HIGHLIGHT]

This one will use Thorns + Iron Maiden + "Attacker Takes Damage" Items. Completely useless since 1.10, because monsters have now a huuuge pool of life, regarding to the damage they deal. And this char will be completely useless against ranged attackers (archers, quill rats...).

Here are some guidelines again :

Code:
AMN'ed Demonhorn's Edge : 77+14
Telling of Beads / Hit Power Amulet : 10
AMN'ed Toothrow : 40+14
PSkulled Spike Thorn : 1.375/level (1-136 / 123@lvl 90) +20
Jeweled Suicide Branch : 25+5
Razortail : 1-99 (90@lvl 90)
Hit Power Ring : 2*6
War Traveler : 10
Hit Power Gloves : 7
Total : 447 ATD (@lvl 90)
[HIGHLIGHT]Useless Build #4 : The Life Replenisher :[/HIGHLIGHT]

Self-explanatory :p ! It's a character with the maximum gear that replenishes Life. A paladin can be cool, with a Healing aura as well.

Some guidelines again :

Code:
DOL'ed Halaberd's Reign : 23+7
Magic Amulet : 15
DOL'ed Skin of the Flayed One : 25+7
4*DOL'ed Monarch : 28
2-Sockets Jeweled Magic Scepter : 15+4+4
Verdungo : 13
Gloves : 5
2*Rings : 9 each
Crafted Blood Boots : 10
=> 174 Repl. Life
[HIGHLIGHT]Useless Build #5 : The Auradin :[/HIGHLIGHT]

This one is a bit special, because it can really be effective in hell. Still, it deserved to be mentionned, since it focuses on the Auras coming from the gear (and possibly from the character, if it's a paladin).
Check Triekje's Auradin Thread for more details concerning this one.

This is it, I think you got the spirit now :) ! I still believe there are tons of other useless builds to try out. Just write here your best ones, and your funniest ideas !

Cheers,
- Frosty

I actually did build an Assassin like your second build:

She had:
Wind War Fist (tornado and twister)
Hellmouth Gloves (meteor and firestorm)
Stormchase Scutum (blizzard and tornado)
Rising Sun Amulet (meteor)
Wisp Projector Ring (chain lightning)
Carrion Wind Ring (poison nova and twister)
Natalya's Shadow Loricated Mail with a Cold and Fire facet (blizzard and meteor)
Infernostride Demonhide Boots (blaze)

When she was fighting:
Shadow Master produces from time to time Frozen Orb, Meteor and Chain Lightning.
When she died she'd auto-produce Blizzard and Meteor.
When she got struck she would auto-produce Blaze, Poison Nova, Meteor, Tornado and Blizzard.
When she hit anything she auto-produced Twister, Chain Lightning, Firestorm, Meteor and Tornado.

She had trouble killing things in hell, but you have to admit, she was cool

Another sweet build would be the BluffSin, running around, letting a Shadow Master do all the work (a lvl 57 Shadow Master)

2 claws with +3 shadow skills +3 shadow master
a cta on switch
+3 shadow skills amulet
+3 shadow skills bone helm
+2 skills armor
2x soj or bul
arachnid mesh
+2 shadow skills shadow dancers
10x shadow skiller
annihilus small charm

The shadow would have
3534 life
2280 ar
79 to all res
(keep in mind that 2000 ar is good for an average high level char with no equip, your master will spawn with equip and get lots of extra mods)

For the sake of laming, you could keep your opponents stunlocked using mindblast :uhhuh:

I've also been thinking about a Twinsen character (for those of you who know the game Little Big Adventure)

He uses Fireballs, Lightning that strikes from Heaven and a Protective spell.
So, a Sorceress using Fireball, Thunderstorm and Energy Shield would fit this description best.

With the rest skill setup and equipment, this build might actually be viable as well.

Similar to your Replenish life paladin, you could build a character that has insane damage reduction. An assassin would be best for that (energy shield drains mana), since she has a spell Fade, get it to lvl50 (not too hard, see the BluffSin) for max Physical Reduction.

Then followed by a lot of items with direct damage reduction:
Armor with 4x sol
Shield with 4x sol
Circlet with 25reduction and 2x sol socketed
Amulet with 25reduction
Craft Rings, Gloves, Belt and Boots with 4 damage reduction each.

Total of 140 damage reduction after the 50% fade damage reduction :)
(on a sorceress you could get 140 damage reduction after 95% es damage reduction)

I have made up a funny build! ESferno sorc^^
Just use inferno a flamebellow balrog sword and ES^^
I dont have godly gear and Im poor so I cant take it to enourmus heights but maybe U guys can^^

@Dawnmaster : Nice ideas  ! The DR/MDR stacking is quite common for pure Energy Shield sorceresses, though.

@Rakanishu : I indeed had a similar project : a Barbarian, dual-wielding Flamebellows  ! It would be quite funny to see a Barb casting Inferno like crazy in Baalrun games :flip: !

Potion thrower was the "best" useless build in 1.09 when potions could be repaired. Used on a barb with double throw, they were wackies in a class of their own.

Check my disaster master on druid forum. He focus in monster hitlocking, but is far from useless. he is still not unlike many useless builds becouse he focus in hit from both equipment and skills.

I played with an assassin like your chance-to-cast one. It was just my barb and her in a Baal run game and poop was flying all over the place. I was like what in the hey is going on? I was also wasted at the time, so I was completely confused.

I've made that life replenish pally, something like 200 life replenish, you don't quite have the ideal equipment :p

If he was in the midst of battle he'd die fast. But if he took a stray shot his health zoomed up. I might make him again, actually.

I'd give that Iron golem necro an edge bow for thorns. I've thought making one for pvp without the golem, imagine 15x damage returned in pvp. All you'd have to do would be cast iron maiden and let a melee char hit you.

Got another useless build :p

It's kinda similar to a Smiter, but then in Sorceress form. In the way that you use a defense as an offense.

Main attack skill: shiver armor (that's right  )
Synergies: frozen armor, chilling armor and cold mastery
Backup: energy shield

With a decent +skill equip (+20 total) and %skill damge (50% extra) you can get up to 2500 direct damage when a monster hits you melee

(831 listed damage with only +skills, 1247 listed damage with the %skill, 195% cm, gives every not cold immuun monster -100% cold resistance, so damage doubles and you get 2494 actual hit damage)

Cool! Inferno barb^^ What was the dmg of that lvl 34 inferno?

I tried a couple useless builds because I was running out of builds. One was the Bruteazon (one I had read about before), an amazon that uses anything but bows/xbows/javs and only passive/magic skills. Another was a bowbarb, basically use a high-damage bow/xbow, the skills I didn't quite determine, maybe Warcries, a point or two in Increased Stamina/Speed, some in Iron Skin/Natural Resistance, and perhaps Leap to get around.

Interesting builds, but by focusing on damage only, I think we shifted a bit away from the subject here :). After all, these two builds are only Amazon & Barb variants, more or less viable in Hell. But they don't focus on anything special coming from the gear or the gameplay itself :p ! In a word, they're still a bit too effective & useful, though very unusual  !

I don't think fireworks assassins really should qualify as useless either. I've been running them through Hell on HCLE for years now, and though they don't get into the upper reaches of ladder, they certainly can pull their own weight. Bladesins are extremely good with this sort of thing - Angel_Veil is wearing a Delerium helm right now and the confusion pops so constantly that it causes problems with my Merc's decrepify.

My son and a friend of mine had a contest going to see which Assasin would go the fastest and they were fast !!!!! They had a lot of fun with them, not sure how far they got in the game they spent most of there times raceing or joining Dueling games and outrunning everyone!!!!

I tried this also but with a barbarian,, only problem was he died a lot!!
I might go back and try it on a zon!

I've made characters that can only wear set items. either full sets , parts of sets or combinations, yes even I know Isenharts set on an assasin. LOL. She didn't use traps or martial arts either just Shadow Disciplines, and swords.

I started making a Paladin with a bow but didn't get very far not sure how it would have turned out.

Seaskye.

I made a "ultimate life leacher" once in 1.09. Goal: as much % of your red ball recovered each time you strike as possible. I found noone could do this better then werebears. Had no insane items on him, but he still was unkilleble as long as he could deal physical damage not against undead.

Stats: Titan deluxe

Items: as much physical damage/sec as possible. Big hammers of course.

Skills: Hunger as main attack
Maul and werebear to add damage
HoW to deal even more damage.

He stole life like nuts, but sometimes got killed before he could swing. Boring build as hell
