The Magic Items-only barbarian

Last night, I rolled this from the cube:

Cruel War Pike of Quickness
Two-Hand Damage: 103 to 560
Durability: 20 of 25
Required Dexterity: 106
Required Strength: 165
Required Level: 66
Spear Class - Fast Attack Speed
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 25
Fingerprint: 0x2c3d6efa
+215% Enhanced Damage
40% Increased Attack Speed
Socketed (2: 0 used)

Last night, I threw 2 shaels in there, for a total of 80% IAS, and bringing the CWoQ to the -60 WW break point.

As typical of me, when I recieve/find/trade for such an elite item, I must create a character around it. I thought of doing a titan, but I've done that. It dawned on me today to make a Magic Items-Only character. I've seen a Rares-only barb, but never a Magic-only char.

I have decided to go with a standard WW barbarian build. Why? Because killing will take care of itself, as damage and speed is only dependant on the item. The only thing to worry about is AR, to which I will use Steel GC's (100+ AR). I won't have CBF, but that doesn't matter too much, since WW works better when I'm moving slower.

So, to list further priorities:
1) Leech-I need to be able to live. Because of the massive damage, only a low % is required.
2) Resitences-Almost as necessary as leech, I want all res's to be at 75 in hell. The barb's NR will help me get there.

Those are my top two, and here are some others, in no order:
Defense-I'll be maxing shout, so more here is better.
+Skills-Mostly from a barb helm or ammy, these are always nice.

That's it for priorities. WW barbs are pretty self-sufficient. Just give them enough leech, res and AR, and you'll be fine.

And now, onto to my thoughts on items. Here is where your help is needed. A couple of rules first, though.
1) Every item must be magical (blue). No rares, sets, runewords or uniques are allowed. Ever.
2) Charms are allowed.
3) Items can be socketed with anything, except rare jewels.
4) Unique quest items, a the two respective tomes, are the only exceptions to rule 1.
5) My merc will follow the above rules.

Weapon: CWoQ (see above)
The reason for the build.

Switch: 2x Echoing Weapons

Armor: ?
I'm a little lost here. I'm thinking a jewelers of something, but a Godly [elite armor] of XXX would also work. Then I'd just punch some holes and fill with resistance runes. Thoughts?

Helm: Barbarian Pelt
What base mods am I looking for? +3 WW, +3 BO? How about from the suffixes/prefixes? Berserkers (+2 all) or echoing (+3 Cries) or visionary (+clvl% AR) [helm] of the Whale/Centaur?

[shameless plug/]I also anticipate this will be the hardest item to attain. If you have something similar to this, drop me a PM.[/end]

Amulet: Chomatic ammy of ?
The prefix is easy, but suffix? What to look for? +life? of Thawing could be good to have somewhere, as would more leech. I'm going to rely on my rings/ammy to get me leech, so lamprey/vampire here.

Rings: Scintillating Rings of the Lamprey/Vampire
I need leech, and here's where I'm going to get it.

Gloves, Boots and Gloves: With the final slots, the prefix will be devoted to a resistance, prioritizing with lightning. The question is then what to do with the suffixes? Boots should add fr/w, and gloves maybe get some leech (only 3% though) and belt may whale? Ahhhhh. So many, too many options.

Sockets
I'm planning on dropping runes like Ort or Ral into the helm/armor to help cover resistance holes.

What do you think? Where should my gambling focus be on getting these items? What mods should I look for that I haven't already thought of? What am I missing?

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and assume your going to max BO? Do you already have a couple of +3 warcrys weapons for your switch? I agree that the helm would be the hardest to find. Any thoughts on gambling a few million or more away for the rings/ammy/boots/belt/gloves? I'm not sure if gloves can spawn with +2 skills that would help you, but if so, that might be an option. Maybe shop Hell Lazruk for a few hours looking for a jeweler XXX of the whale? Throw in your runes, and you've got a 30 res all armor with +life. I'm don't think +vit can spawn on a magic item, but if it can, that would be better then +life. I'm also not sure if two rings or thawing is the same as CBF or if it works like poison length reduction. If you want maxed res in hell, I think your going to need a lot of points in NR or a lot of luck. Maybe you have some skillers saved up????

I don't think WW can spawn on pelts, but maybe I'm wrong. All the other stuff looks good to me. For gambling I'd go with whatever: A) you need most (resists, fr/w, etc.) & B) cheapest

Also, what about normal (i.e. non-magic) items? Yay or nay?

@Asher: WW can spawn on pelts, the trick is getting it to spawn on a godly pelt with the right other mods. I'm not going to use normal items, as that would defeat the purpose of the build. While I can get sockets on those items easier (and are great for runewords), this is a themed build. My charms, as stated, are going to be Steels, with single res charms below them, to fill in any of the holes.

@Poop: I can't get +2 skills on gloves. I've looked on the AS for potential prefixes/suffixes. Also, +life is better for my purposes than +vita, because the life from +life is multiplied by BO, while the life gained from +vita items is not (changed from v1.09). Freeze reduction works like Poison, so two Rings of thawing (50% each) yields a total of 75% reduction.

And yes, I plan to gamble for everything. I'll run pindle with my sorc and sell everything I don't keep. And I have a Gheed's with a decent -% on vendor prices. So gold is unlimited, it just takes time (which I have also, in a more limited quantity).

FRW actually works against WW. By walking slower you will be able to get more hits landed on a particular spot when whirlwinding.

A Blessed Aim guard or a rogue merc will help your barb hit stuff, as will a few points (more than one, for a decent duration) in Battle Cry.

Maybe circlets can get you a couple of good mods as well.
I have a glacial (+3 cold skills) coronet of the elephant somewhere, so i guess a barb skill circlet should be possible as well.
Not sure if it weighs up to the staff mods on a primal helm though.

Woot! That was mine. Also a WW barb.

I've got a couple of jewelers of life. Only problem is they're all normal armours apart from an Ornate Plate which only has 34 life. Let me know if you need one.

I'd also look for jewelers here as a prefix, It may only give you one extra socket over a lucky socketing quest but it could be useful. (Also WW can't spawn on helms as I think has been mentioned)

Have you thought of the everlasting suffix. Straight DR is quite useful on these builds.

Don't want to go with Attack rating/leech rings?

Gloves: Since OWIAS is useless LL seems to be the obvious suffix plus whatever resitance you need.

Boots: Resistance + FRW seems obvious

Belt: Resistance + life/FHR depending on how much FHR you can get from charms I suppose.

The only mods I'd consider you haven't mentioned are FHR and DR. FHR isn't that important for a WW barb, but don't ignore it completely. Also if you can get an ammy with 20+ DR plus 3 Sol's in a Helm gives 40+ DR - quite useful.

Edit: Forgot to mention if you plan to use magic only all game you need to put some thought into what gear you'll use pre end game. For my rares only barb at times it was a struggle finding early/mid game gear to use.

I just want to point out that getting +WW on your helm (or anything else) is basically worthless. The extra + damage is negligible, especially since you'll be doing plenty of damage anyway with that weapon. Instead, I'd concentrate on BO and/or NR as the skills to get boosts to from the helm.

godly elite armors of like 1500 def or so will regularly cost hundreds of thousands of gold to repair. just keep that in mind. i have a few in my stash from my old untwinked days if you'd like some. no charge of course.

Hehe Nice Pike!. As for your armor some Godly Sacred Armor of the Whale would be nice and handy!

Just as a side note these things are impossible to buy. You just can't carry enough gold unfortunately. I've got a screenie of a Godly SA of Simplicity selling for 3.5 million! And a plain Godly SA for 3.85 million.
