Starting over

Hi all. Two days ago I got the urge to begin playing Diablo II (and LoD) again, so I dug up my disks and reinstalled them. I've currently been playing LAN with a couple of friends and GF, but I kind of miss being able to jump onto random games and play with new people.

So, interesting question considering this is a single-player forum, but I'm wondering, are there DII.net organized games on Open Battle.net that I'd be eligible to join? Normally I'd just try to find a game tagged Legit on Open, and I have read through a few of the stickies regarding hosting your own games and the like, however, I play almost exclusively Hardcore (SC for the girlfriend, she's a bit panicky). Apologies if I missed any relevant posts, but if anyone could point me in the right direction that'd be great.

Regards,

TheSock

Welcome.

Most of the "legit" games on open battle.net often contain people who has interfered with cheats, drop mods and the like.

We have a sticky thread here where we arrange MP games through TCP/IP.

Welcome back!

There is also a Player Matchup forum that you can use to set up games, clans, groups, etc.

You won't find many HC multiplayers here, since lag is going to cause more deeds than its worth. The (Not so) Monthly Multi-Player Thread has IP games hosted by various forum members. There seem to be games available from 18:00 GMT each day at the moment. Be sure to be familiar with the mods that are accepted around here and the concept of 'tainting' before you connect though.

Also, I know what the folk here can be like, so I need to put down a disclaimer: I haven't really been paying a lot of attention to policy here (I barely recognize the trade forum anymore!), so I'm not sure whether you can really jump aboard those games, given that you've only just introduced yourself. I'll wait for either a mod or someone who's more attentive to details to fill you in. Even if you are allowed by forum policy, people might get touchy.

Thanks for the info all.

And yes, Thirty-Thirty, I'm totally unfamiliar with any mods people may be running. I'll have to do a bit of research.

Thanks again.

I'm new, and been jumping into multiplayer games whenever I can, and I havn't been flamed/made fun of/even mentioned yet.

Welcome to the SPF!

This looks that the right time for me to step in on the subject of trading and MPing here after playing on open.

The problem with public open games is that just because the host tags it as legit doesn't mean that the other people joining will respect that. The fact that you have played in public open games will be problem for your ability to trade and MP here. If want to do these things, PM me, and we will work things out.

I'm glad to hear it. Not that I expect everyone in here to be xenophobes, but I wasn't sure. The biggest problem is then getting up to speed with the mods. I'll give an attempt at a simple explanation:

The mods people use are basically the RuneWord Mod (RWM) and Red Rune Mod (RRM). The Runeword Mod enables the ladder/realm Runewords that aren't normally available to Single-Players. The Red Rune Mod makes the text showing runes on the ground red, rather than white. Its nothing major, but pretty handy. If you don't use any mods, you are said to play 'Vanilla'.

If a character of yours MPs with/uses items traded from a character that is played using a given mod, then your character is said to be 'tainted' by that mod. Actually, if your character MPs/uses MPs with/uses items traded from a character that is tainted, then your char becomes tainted too. Some people restrict their play to Vanilla or RRM only, so don't join their games if you're tainted. Similarly, if you decide you want to stay Vanilla (i.e. untainted), don't join RWM/RRM tainted games.

I can't remember offhand where to get the mods, but there'll be plenty about them in the stickies. Newcomers can be slack about reading them, so have a look for these details. It'll prevent any misunderstandings, which have a habit of getting nasty.

Enjoy your stay! I might see you in a game myself.
