Hard points into Resist Lightning will act as a synergy, but not points from + skill items.
Wearing 2 dream items will not give you a double holy shock aura, as far as I know.

When wearing both dream items, both the Holy Shock aura's stack making them alot stronger (plus the fact of the auradin bug).

What does the fact that your sorc used a particular item have to do with a paladin's auras? Her lightning mastery may or may not have helped HS, but that has nothing to do with synergies.
Resist lightning will synergize the holy shock aura from resist lightning.

Lightning mastery does work with Holy Shock, in fact, it works too well. The Holy Shock damage aura gets straight lightning mastery boost. With a level 30 Holy Shock aura and enough +skill items, you can get aura damage around 2K max.
The real kicker is that Holy Shock adds melee damage to an attack. The skill itself is multiplied by lightning mastery as it is a lightning skill. Lightning mastery also multiplies all the lightning damage in a melee attack. So the formula for the sorceress' max lightning damage in melee from holy shock is as follows:
1668 (base lightning damage from Holy Shock) x lightning mastery x lightning mastery
The effect is exponential damage growth from +lightning skill items. A level 40 lightning mastery would mean a maximum of 63704. That is a lot of damage. Combine that with enchant you can even break the 100k max damage mark. The downside is that with the focus on increasing skills, other aspects of the character are often neglected.
