"Spirit" Shield Question

Hi All,

What shield do you use to create a "Spirit" RW? I check Arreat Summit and only certain Elite shields can get 4 sockets (Monarch, Aegis, and Ward), and they all have really high strength requirements. Am I missing something?

If you want it for a Paladin, most if not all of the Paladin-only shields can have 4 sockets.

For all other, you have to use Monarch. It's worth the strenght-requirement.

It is for a Paladin...so, I should use my socket quest on a "white" Pally only shield? Sorry for asking questions that I probably should know after playing this game for so long. :)

Ideally, a Sacred Rondache or Sacred Targe (they have very good block % and lower requirements) would make a good Spirit shield - if you're lucky the shield will already have nice inherent properties such as resist all. Just about any pally shield could work well enough though.

Ideally ... something like this, but with 4 sockets of course.

Sacred Rondache
Defense: 159
Chance to Block: 48%
Smite Damage: 35 to 58
Durability: 39 of 68
(Paladin Only)
Required Strength: 109
Required Level: 52
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 85
Fingerprint: 0x2356ed37
All Resistances +45

Otherwise something like this for a non-pally.

Monarch
Defense: 148
Chance to Block: 42%
Smite Damage: 12 to 34
Durability: 61 of 86
Required Strength: 156
Required Level: 54
Item Version: 1.10 Expansion
Item Level: 85
Fingerprint: 0x44b92737
Socketed (4: 0 used)

But if you use the socket quest on the above, you do get those four sockets.

Oh Bill_n_Opus, you're sacred rondache is 5 off perfect defense(138-164), you better keep looking for a better one:wink3:

Man, I've been looking for a high resist all Pal shield for so long. I did find this:

Kurast Shield
Required Level: 55
Required Strength: 124
FP: 0x30cdceaa
iLvl: 83
Properties:
64% Enhanced Maximum Damage
108 to Attack Rating
3 Sockets (0 used)

Thinking it would be good for my frost zealot. Isn't 64%ED perfect? Problem is I don't have a Mal rune to make Sanctuary so I'll just have to use 3xPD.

I really wish that thing had spawned 4os...

I didn't know shields could get enhanced maximum damage..

I think it's just Enhanced Damage, but it's the wording from the GoMule printout (or whatever application that is). For example, here's a similar shield I have from ATMA.

Crown Shield
Defense: 36
Chance to Block: 45%
Smite Damage: 4 to 12
Durability: 49 of 60
(Paladin Only)
Required Strength: 65
Required Level: 18
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 65
Fingerprint: 0xba203ca5
+65% Enhanced Damage
+117 to Attack Rating

I'm no pally expert, so forgive the noob question, but is the enhanced damage from a Pally shield to any and all attacks, or does it only apply to something like Charge that uses the shield?

Cheers,
Butz. :dunce:

I just socketed and equipped that shield I posted and my Zeal damage went up a bit. Not a huge amount, but enough to make it worth using until I find a HoZ (e.g. never). Without the shield, I do 1671-2043, and with it, I do 1765-2180. This is with lvl 24 Zeal, lvl 24 Holy Freeze, and maxed Resist Cold synergy.

ANYWAY back on topic. Spirit shields. Actually, I'm curious, does anyone make Spirit swords? I was thinking that, since they're so cheap to make, they'd be a good alternative to some of the more expensive spellcaster items. And it's available at clvl 25 which is pretty early. You don't get as much FCR as with Spectral Shard or Wizardspike, nor do you get the resists, but there are still a lot of nice benefits. I'm thinking of making one just because I have plenty of extra low runes lying around.

Yup. Most of my baby sorc's use a spirit sword until they get old enough to share the occy/eschuta/dfathom with their older sisters. Very useful twinking tool. Throw in an insight at level 27 and you're set.

You know, I lose sleep everyday because it ain't perfect. :wink3:

I'm lucky that I have a HoZ so i've never been tempted to punch some holes in that Sacred Rondache ... and i've only ever built a Hammerdin so i'm not sure if a Spirit Pally shield would be better than a HoZ for non-hammerdin builds.

Spirit are great to twink skiller characters at lvl 25! The best base items are broad sword or crystal sword due to their low requeriments, even long sword if you need attack speed for assassin trap deployment.
Like xduckster sayd... If your char (at lvl 25) use a Spirit and your merc (at lvl 27) use Insight (Ethereal Partizan is the best for twinking), probably you won't need another mana pot for a long time!

As for shield, Monarch is the best for non-paladin chars, any "Normal" or "Superior" Monarch found will get 4 sockets using Larzuk's socketing quest.

As for Pally shields, just remember that you get 4 socket using Larzuk's quest only if they have ilvl 25+ (that is any pally shield found in Normal Act 4 or further)

I made a Spirit shield on a Akaran Targe with 42% to all resis that i found running Hell Cows to twink low lvl Paladins. As you can see 44 str isn't that much  ...
Spirit
Superior Akaran Targe
'TalThulOrtAmn'
Defense: 141
Chance to Block: 30%
Smite Damage: 12 to 16
Durability: 22 of 22
(Paladin Only)
Required Strength: 44
Required Level: 26
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 76
Fingerprint: 0x5b85b090
+22 to Vitality
+99 to Mana
+12% Enhanced Defense
+250 Defense vs. Missile
Fire Resist +42%
Lightning Resist +77%
Cold Resist +77%
Poison Resist +77%
Increase Maximum Durability 12%
Attacker Takes Damage of 14
55% Faster Hit Recovery
30% Faster Cast Rate
+2 to All Skill Levels
+5 Magic Absorb
Socketed (4: 4 used)

My windy druid used one to get to pat. I had a Wizardspike on switch, but it was only used in very dangerous situations.

I've got a related question.

How much dex does a sorceress need for max block with a Spirit Monarch at around level 80 (approximately)?

Don't do that. (75/42)*80*2 + 15 = 301 dex (!)

At level 80 you have a total of 79*5 + 15 = 410 stat points available, of which 301 - 25 = 276 have to go to dex, leaving 134 stat points. If you'd have no +str from gear you wouldn't even be able to carry the shield and have max block at the same time. Not to mention that every unblockable attack would kill you in one hit.
