Smite dmg and choosing shield matter

Hello to all fine people over here :smiley:

I've read lots of infos about smite dmg matter, but it only made me confused.
My question is about damage done by a smite pala.

If one's using fana+smite what is his final damage ? For example I use an exile made in zakarum shield which it has 46-46 smite dmg. The final damge is 46-46 x (fana % bonus ), or it will be add the other stuffs like dmg from grief, forty and jwls?

And straight linked to this is choosing the shield for smiters's exile : Zaka, vortex, kurast , having in mind that base defense is the same for all of them.

I'm bad with calculations so I'll skip the first part of your question, and leave that to someone who knows what they're doing.

As regards to the second part, which shield to choose.
It comes down to if you want to put more points into dex to get your max blocking with a vortex and have the higher defense as a benefit.
Or, you want less points in dex but still have max blocking with a sacred targe, but you have lower defense.

I like the lower dex, so I chose sacred targe myself. My smiter isn't really lacking in defense, especially when the chilling armor kicks int. More points into vita.

Smite Damage:

Smite Min Damage: (BaseShieldMin + HolyShieldMin + PlusDamageMin) * (1 + (Smite%ED/100) + (STRbonus/100) + (Skill%ED/100) + (off-weapon%ED/100))

Smite Max Damage: (BaseShieldMax + HolyShieldMax + PlusDamageMax) * (1 + (Smite%ED/100) + (STRbonus/100) + (Skill%ED/100) + (off-weapon%ED/100))

PlusDamageMin = Grief's +damage

Thank you for answers.

One more question I have to ask.
HolyShieldMin and HolyShieldMax reffers to HolyShield aura, right ?
But if you put points in HolyShield aura and use fana aura when killing Ubers, it still gets bonus from holyshield ? HolyShield works like a pasive skill ?

Holy shield is not an aura. It has to be cast, like a spell.

I play d2 online for like 5 or 6 years now and only now I found that holyshield is like a boo thing and not an aura. That's a shame on me :(
I have a griefed vortex exiled smiter full charmed and I smite Ubers for so long time ... this holyshield matter comes like a rock in my head.

Just out of interest, what shield did you think every other paladin was using that looked so silvery and weird?

Actually, it works more like an enchantment.

Holy shield looks like a white shiny kite shield with a + symbol on it. HoZ has the same graphic as an Aerin/Gilded/Zakarum shield. When holy shield is cast, the graphic will change to the HS graphic for the duration of the spell.

Holy shield enhances your total defense as of 1.10, before that, it "enchanted" the shield only, which made HoZ look like it had 2k defense on its own. It adds to shield smite damage and blocking as well (unchanged in patches to my knowledge) which shows on the shield.

It shouldn't be. I go with Grief and Hoz and bring them down pretty fast. How much crushing blow do you have?

Indeed, it's like a state. Once cast it'll remain on your character for the duration, even if you unequip and re-equip new shields (running around shieldless after casting HS will not interrupt the duration, and it'll still expire). That said, the LCS will incorrectly display the loss of the smite damage bonus if you switch out shields though.

Nah, I think paladins are corrupted, and that + only symbols added shield stats ;)
