Yep, in Sofcore it's always sorceress, though at least in 1.11 I can't imagine why you'd want to invest in BOTH Blizzard AND Orb. Pure Blizzard sorceress is the most effective cookie cutter MF-er in the game. She owns Meph, Pindleskin and Ancient Tunnels, some of the best places for MF-ing in single-player.
Meteorb or CL/Orb or any other hybrid is good if you like to kill everything that gets in your way though, and want to Matriarch straightaway rather than stay around MF-ing in Nightmare to be able to advance further. Soloing Hell with a single tree sorc requires a lot of cheese or godly gear.

Blizzard is an extremely powerful skill, which is good for killing any non-cold immune monsters, even with every single piece of equipment dedicated for MF. This is why pure Blizz sorcs are popular for targets like Meph, Pindle and the Ancient Tunnels.
Blizzard hybrids, basically either ones with Fireball or Lightning/Chain Lightning are powerful builds, which are good area running, including Baal.

I'd dare to say that it's not that bad an idea. Serra, my lvl 95 (and going on strong) sorc has maxed FO, Blizzard, Ice Blast and Ice bolt, 15 points in GS and a few points in Cold Mastery.
Why? Because FO synergizes Ice Blast. Sacrificing a couple of points from one Blizzard synergy and a lot of points from CM, you'll get a great spammable spell. CM isn't that important beyond lv 17, unless you're running Meph, Pindle or Baal. 5.5 k Blizz and 4.5k IB with still having 350 mf and very good resists make one gg AT runner; Serra runs exclusively AT and LK (I have a real Blizzy for Pindle/Meph :tongue
