Runewords: No love for spears?

My friend has always had a thing for spear barbarians, mainly because he likes playing non-cookie cutter builds. I think it's great that he is doing something different, but I was just thinking about how he will fair in Hell mode. Compared to a lot of other weapons, the unique spears seem somewhat lacking so perhaps there might be some nice rune words...
except the only runewords useable in spears are things like BOTD and Silence which arn't easily obtainable.

What would be a good weapon to aim for, to keep him going through nightmare and hell? Bare in mind that we have both started new ladder characters and only play for roughly 2 hours per day so we are restricted to how quickly we can amass wealth. I am currently building a blizzard sorc to team up with him.
 
Hone sundan pops to mind, if he can get an eth one it'd be awesome.

Of course that's not a runeword, but does it have to be?
 
No, we just like making rune words as they just feel more 'satisfying' to us. :) Upgrading a hone sundan would make it a ghost spear, right? Or would you recomend leaving it as a Yari? 163 dex requirement seems pretty steep.
 
Yes it would upgrade to ghost spear, and yes the dex can be a problem :)

There's also arioc's (50% deadly strike, +4 skills, itd) again not runewords but a very nice weapon.

Arioc's and hone sundan has the abillity to reach the last ww bp if he's a whirler.
So does the botd ghost spear, I dunno how rich you are, but ebotd ghost spear rocks.. a lot. And you get that poking sound all the time, you gotta love it :)

Edit. Just re-read your first post, you're not filthy rich I see :)
Arioc's and hone sundan are dirt cheap. An ethereal (near) perfect hone sundan may be a bit pricy though.

I know this isn't the trade forum, but I do have a +4 Arioc's spear for trade, and I would sell it for pgems if your friend is interested.

What's the difference between a spear and a polearm? They look the same. They react the same. They're about the same speed.

They could have replaced Spear mastery with Bow mastery. Or Unarmed Mastery. Whoa. Unarmed Mastery. That'd be freaking awesome...
 
Strength, honor and malice are the three RW's i can think of that would work in any melee weapon. Some have suggested that blizz open up the polearm RW's to include spears which IMO would be a good thing. Maybe then i could build the spear zon i've always wanted to. :thumbsup:

Not sure if this was a rhetorical question or not, but here's my take on it.

They might look the same, but they're not.

Physically speaking, spears are just that: pointy sticks that vary in length. Used in combat, they are made to poke at the enemy from the ranks behind (or to knock an enemy from his horse).

Polearms on the other hand are typically long handled axes (some with a pick at the end). Used in combat, they are swung as you would an axe, but can be used to poke if they have the pick at the end (the a bec-de-corbin)

Basically, that's the difference.

Game-wise, you're right, in most instances, they are similar in many ways. No doubt about that, especially in the hands of your act 2 merc.

That would be great, or perhaps they could make some spear-only rune words. They wouldn't have to make them ridiculously uber so everyone goes out and makes spear barbs/spearazons but something a little more high end than 'malice' would be nice. ;) Maybe I'll just tell my friend to save up reeeeally reeeeally hard for the runes to make BOTD. :D
