Bear in mind this destroys any gems, jewels or runes that were socketed in the item.

Whoa! That's good to know. Any way to recover gems, jewels or runes that were accidently placed in a item?

Let me guess : you took a sockable item with nothing in it. Placed it in your stash on top of some HR and then fainted?
Has happend to me but luckily not with any HR!

Scroll of Town Portal... (probably what you were talking about, but I wasn't sure).
... and I've 'ruined' a few items by accidentally moving stuff around... My personal favorite is the spare Tomb Reaver I recently found (with mostly bottom-end stats and only 1 socket) that I dropped a normal Sapphire in... oops.
Edit: And yes, it works with sets/uniques - in 1.11 (it works in 1.10 too, but I'm doubtful on earlier versions).

Sorry about that. Yes, Scroll of Town Portal is what I meant to say. Thanks for catching it.
Really appreciate the recipe confirmations. For anyone seeking still further verification, I just tried the recipe as instructed here and it works. The procedure ate the misplaced gem of course, but that was a price I paid gladly to have my IK helm sockets free again. Thanks for the info everyone (and to Blizzard for creating a handy "undo" recipe).
