Range of weapons

When you read the descriptions of weapons at battle.net,between "durability" and "dexterity" columns, there is a "range" column;for instance,a thunder maul is range 5 and a colossus blade is range 3
It is somehow linked to damage, yet I don't understand how
So,what does "range" do ?

Are you kidding?? I have never heard of such info

Its the reason a BOTD War Pike WW Barb is so leathal. You must not have pllayed very long indeed. What else could range mean?

A whirlwind can be endless with a good mana leeching;a melee character has to be close to hit monsters

Allows you to hurt the enemies from a longer distance away.
Would you care to elaborate?
I don't understand why range matters if you're a melee char

If you're about to kill that unique with your club, and it runs away. You have to chase it. Really annoying. But, if you had a spear, it would strike the unique even if it started running.

And of course, range is especially important in WW terms.

When my barb does PvP, there is usually a mob or creaures standing about. Whenusing a War Pike my reach (or circle of effect) why WW'ing is alot more than say just a Sword (Gladious etc) so I kill more creatures (or at least hit them).

Why would it be useful to have long range? Why would it be useful to stab someone before they a chance to stab you? Why the **** why! I dont understand! Blizzard should get rid of it forever.

If you think of range as "reach" it makes more sense.

Weapons have reach, as in, how close you have to be to hit them in a melee sense.

Spears, pikes etc have a reach of 5, meaning there can actually be a bit of clear ground (a character's width or so) between the you and your target and you can still hit it.

It's most noticable with Assassin kicks, strangely enough. Kick range seems to still be based on weapon range. When wielding a spear, you can kick "thin air" and monsters die. It looks funny :)

Bows have a "reach" of 1, a small detail that matters only when the wepaon is wielded by shapeshifted druids and blade shield Assassins. Obviously, bows can shoot their arrows quite a bit further than that ;)

What frenzied said, i taught him all he knows.
(So he must be stupid :cheesy: ).
