questions about 4os Energy shield stave

Hey all,
i have been looking for a 4os +3ES stave for awhile now and have decided that this maybe can be done the easy way by buying one and using the socketing quest. Unfortunately, i don't know what mlvl the stave is cause no monster would drop it. Would the socketing quest just check the ilvl? Where should i shop to get the desired ilvl to get four sockets?

I don't think you can shop that staff from a vendor though - you'd need to purchase the staff in Act1 or Act2 normal to get a non-magic quality, and I think the vendors there have their Item Levels capped to something below what will provide a 4-socket staff (or maybe it's capped below a level24 spell).

I could be wrong.

Edit: I'm don't think I am. I just bought an item with my level82 enchantress - ilvl20. I'm not seeing any level24+ spells on the staves available though, so maybe/probably the ilvl is related to the spell level.

Looking at zzz's list, you need to just keep picking these up when they drop (probably from about Act4 Normal onward):

Battle Staff
Cedar Staff
Elder Staff
Gnarled Staff
Gothic Staff
Shillelah

and...

Archon Staff
Rune Staff
War Staff
(these three will need to be socketed with the horadric cube recipe to have a chance at 4 sockets; Larzuk won't help you here).


Edit3: My suggestion would be to kill cows in Normal, with no MF, and preferably with a large number of players in the game. You should be able to mow them down very fast with a high level char.

Shopped Items have ilvl=clvl+5, when ilvl>=25 the items will spawn always magic. To have a chance to shop a staff with + ES you need a clvl>=20 which always spawn magic. So you can't shop normal staff with +ES.
