OT - I'm in the Torchlight 2 beta - any interest in my thoughts on the game?

I've been informed that I'm in the Torchlight 2 beta, and I'm downloading it now. I suppose this means I'll never get my 1.09 Windforce (I've been running Pindeh for months), but "Oh, Well".

Anyway, is anyone interested in my thoughts on the game once I've had a chance to get into it?

Do a side-by-side comparison!

On a serious note, yes, most definitely. You've been following TL2 for some time, and have high hopes for the game, so it'd be interesting to know what you think of the beta.

LOL - well, my last side-by-side project died a natural death of neglect. I do have high hopes for T2, so I'll definitely let you know whether those hopes were met.

I've checked this thread twice, so I guess I'm interested. But I don't have much hopes for the game. I didn't really get hooked on Fate or on Torchlight. Items were just too bland. Gambling and enchanting were unbalanced. I hope the developers have learned a bit about how to make a game fun.

First thoughts:

Keeping track of the quests can be confusing - it seems like they keep coming at you faster than you can finish them.

Gameplay is very nice - the dialogue and story are compelling.

Items - they make more sense, like all rings have resists, etc. Set items aren't obvious like in Diablo - they show up as rare until you look at them. I haven't played enough to tell if the itemization (and usefullnes) is up to D2 standards - jury's still out.

Plenty challenging. My first character (Beserker) met an end at a boss (General somebody) whose lair you can't cast a portal in or escape, and he keeps summoning tough minions. I'll try another character tonight.

Definitely interested. I've written of D3; if T2 isn't a worthy game I may never break off D2 completely. I'm not as much of a loot whore as some; I'm more into learning the game system and tinkering with build design, especially oddballs. Does it looks like the skill trees are robus and will allow a lot of tinkering and hybridization like D2 in 1.10 and on where you can make a viable build around almost any skill of your choice?

Torchlight 2 will have an offline mode.... I think that's a big selling point for people 'round these parts.

Second go-through - this time with an Outlander, and I've gotten a better feel for the game. The quests make better sense if you make sure to address them before taking more on. I also learned to tab my RMB skills to mix up cursing-type skills and weapon skills. I also got this character to General Krell (I think that's his name), but beat him fairly easily this time, partly due to incorporating use of the fish to make my pet (a wolf) into a Vampiric Spider for 5 minutes - that is a neat element of the game.

The skills are fun and apparently usefule so far - there's a cap to how much you can pump each one before reaching a specific level (so you have to be level 14 before getting a 6th point in a initial level skill), so I've been trying several out. I'm finding myself more inclined to pump the passives since the active skills tend to give you a big initial damage/effect, and additional points are meager in comparison, whereas the passives tend to give linear bonuses.

Some of the skill visuals are AWESOME (like Rapid Fire).

The items (I have managed to find some set and unique items) aren't blowing me away, but I'm only in the very earliest part of the game, and I haven't found any of the very top items (Legendary), which might very well accomplish that. I do like how they made enchanting possible but more difficult - you run into an enchanter in the bottom of a side quest dungeon (and it goes without saying that I recommend the side quests - you get some specific items like "One-Eyed Willie's Other Eye" from such quests).

I'm definitely enjoying the game so far, espcecially after getting past some extreme n00b silliness.

I did note a bug, in that there is a ghost boat you summon, and a ghost gives you a quest to take on One-Eyed Willie (love that name), but when you return to claim your reward, he doesn't talk to you anymore - but I assume that will be fixed.

It's a beta, so ofcourse there will be bugs. I mean, that's actually what you're there for, to catch the bugs so they can get fixed.

Can you knock monsters into the air?

Yes, actually, a critical strike will actually sometimes knock a monster in the air and back. Now that I think about it, CS really appears to be a key to at least the early game (and that's something you get from the charge bar - 100% chance of CS when active, at least for the Berserker - I have a harder time getting the bar charged for the Outlander, so I haven't actully verified that 100% CS is what you get for an Outlander's charge).

I also think I found a key weapon affix for an Outlander (who is like an Amazon with ranged weapon skills) - I first saw it on One-Eyed Willie's Other Eye - if you put this in a weapon, it gives 75 physical damage over 5 seconds (like Open Wounds), and with the balance of monster HPs, that's actually a pretty awesome thing - shoot and run away (especially with a multiple target skill). Then I found (but did not buy - I may be kicking myself for that) an augmented pistol with 155 physical damage over 5 seconds - it seems like this damage stacks with multiple hits to boot!

One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier post is the smart humor and references in the game. For instance, the setting of the One-Eyed Willie quest when you first get there reminds me of the beach scene from the Gunslinger/Drawing of the Three by Stephen King - there are these crabs coming at you with a very "klackety-klack" sound. That is a very cool reference (if I am interpreting it right).

One other things is sets - I have collected 3 pieces of a 4 piece set so far, and 2 pieces of another set or 2, so the developers' promise of making sets more viable to collect in-game appears to be valid. There are also (as far as I can tell) sets specific to the boss you kill, which is a cool element... but I'm not blown away by the partial set bonuses I'm seeing listed (though I don't know if there's a list of full set bonuses that's not listed on the single pieces - I'll have to get a full set collected to speak to that).

BTW - the variety of monsters is impressive, including the style and attack - there are these really creepy little jumping spiders that gave me goosebumps, and there's an area where you get feral wolves that move fast like you would expect a wolf to move. I also like the skeletons that, after you kill them, keep coming at you as just a torso moving by the hands.

My Outlander is in much better shape equipment wise than my Berserker, so I'll keeping going further into the game.

Good luck, Pijus. I have to say I was not expecting to get an invite, so I like your chances. I'd also suggest checking out the forum there.

I'll have time to do some more T2 tonight (I think I'll push my Outlander further into more areas), but then I'm out of town for a couple of days (and no T2 on my laptop, but I do have D2, so I might have a last-gasp chance at the 1.09 Windforce).

You do make this game sounds pretty nice so far. I think I would have interpreted the beach scene similarly, having only read the first half of the series a few months ago. Still have to read the next 3 books. Having sets actually avilable as they're useful would be a major plus, as D2 doesn't really allow this unless you get super lucky with something like Hsarus's set, or something equally lame.

I am in a similar boat, I didn't even finish TL as I just got bored too quickly. I don't have particular high hopes, but I guess I will have another look when it gets released if (and this is a big if) I get bored of D3.
