OT: Another computer thread...

Hey.
As some of you may know my computer wont run guild wars currently.
My mom has a dell optiplex gx100. She is offering to trade computers
with me so I can play GW. It has about 20 free gigs of HD space so
that should cover the space. It has 256 mb of ddr ram which should
be enough for gw. The graphics card is up to date and so is the sound.
Now the processor is my question. It is a intel celeron 598 MHZ. I know
GW requires atleast 800 mhz. So if this computer wont run it for this
reason is this model of computer able to upgrade their processors to
atleast 800 mhz. Also I need a price check on one if it can. Second hand
from ebay most likely. Also im not really sure what it looks like or how to
install it. But first things first will it play and if not can I buy a new proc.
I really appreciate all the people who have been helping me with my
annoying pc problems. I also want to thank the mods for not dropping a
ban stick on my threads!

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't recommend playing games with the minimum PC requirement. Mostly the games are not optimized for that minimum configuration and more often that not running at minimum settings will probably greatly decrease your gaming pleasure.

Still I say, invest in a brand new computer... they should come pretty cheap with at least 512mb ram and a 2ghz cpu.

If I were you (which I'm not, but anyhoo) I would think twice about the fantasy of swapping processors as you clearly have no idea what you're dealing with.

You should be able to get a new comp to run GW for about 500$. I'd recommend that.

Second hand comp with atleast Athlon Xp/512mb/Nvidia 6xxx should do the trick with less $

Ok, Im going to have to specify something. I cant get a new computer. Of course every one recomends it. I wish I could. I dont want to wait 3 months
to have enough money for it. I just need to know if the processor can be
replaced. I can get some one else to do it for me. I already had the computer
store guy say that he would show me how to install it if I did buy one. I just need to know if this model can have a new processor that is around 800mhz.

And the guy at the store didn't know/say if the mobo supports a better cpu?

the slot on your motherboard for your celeron processor will be completely different then any processors they make today. There is almost certianly no way you could find a new processor that will fit in it nowadays.

You would have to buy a new motherboard to upgrade your processor. The new motherboard probably wont fit in your case, which means you will have to buy a new case. Your stick of 256 ram will probably be and older model and wont fit in your new motherboard, so you will have to buy new ram also. The new motherboards onboard video will suck, so you will have to put your video card in it so you will have to make sure the new motherboard has an AGP slot, because it will most likely not have one, or it will have a PCI express slot. And lastly, you will have to get a new mouse, or an adapter for your mouse/keyboard because it wont fit into the old PS2 slot... or the pre PS2 slot that you might have.

I'm not trying to be rude, just saying, thats all. I just upgraded my 1.5ghz 256 mg of ram setup to a 2.66ghz 1.2gig of ram setup.... the above is a true story.

Dbl... Guild Wars actually runs fairly decent at (and below!) the minimum specs. During alpha testing, they had quite a large group of testers running on very old machines and they were able to play.

The game won't look as pretty as it does on a top end rig, and you will experience lag in the large 8v8v8v8 battles... but you'll be able to at least play ... do the PvE content...

Instead of trying to upgrade after the swap, run Guild Wars on the machine and deal with the sub-par graphics settings and lag while you save for a better rig. Trust me.

Also, if you enjoy dell, sign up for their mailing list. From time to time they send out 35% off coupons which you can STACK with their other offers. You can ALWAYS find an offer that has a free 17"+ flat panel plus free shipping plus 10-15% off. You can get some really nice deals if you are patient and know what to watch for :)

Thanks I guess guys.
I setup the dell and it runs fine. I installed the new graphics card and im waiting to see if it will work. I just wanted to know if ram is what sped
things up or if I could change the processor. Over and over people tell
me to get a new computer. I only needed to know those 2 things. I got
it anyways.

Hp_Sauce nailed it, I think. I used to buy mainboards that could take a faster processor at a later time. I've since given up on this idea. The problems that I had were not as drastic as hps, but you will almost certainly find that a new processor looks as if it will fit, but the fsb (front side bus - whatever that is !) will cause you problems. The newer processor will run this at a speed that it too fast for your older mainboard - i.e. incompatible.

A new mainboard to go with the new processor will usually mean an update to ram, as the older ram chips are no longer supported. I haven't had the problem with no AGP slot, or the mainboard not fitting in the case, but have had a problem where the power supply needed improving, as the newer processors need more juice.

Look on the bright side - your harddisks and other drives will still fit :-)

If you can't buy a new pc right now, you may be able to pick up a second hand one that isn't on the leading edge of technology, but will do what you want it to do.

Or just use your Mom's computer while you save up for a new one...

My mom let me use her iMac years ago to play Myth the Fallen Lords while I saved up to get a new Mac that could handle it (and the graphics apps I wanted to use).

Getting more RAM is a good idea in any case. I haven't run on 256MB since like 2001. Join us in the shiny world of the future! :-)

Anyways DBL you really shouldn't bother with a new processor theory since that will come around $100-200 US (depends where you buy it). Which of course your gonna have to buy the motherboard $60-120US... If your old motherboard had integrated video/sound and the new one doesnt then your looking at anywhere from $90-500US for the vid and $20-200US for the sound... total your looking at $270-1020. So its safe to say that if your aiming for the lower end of the price range then you might as well check out dell and get yourself another for just a few more bucks (29 more if I remember their latest commercial)

If you're using Windows xp it would probably be happy to be using ~300 mg of ram at any given time (when its just ideling). So right now with 256 it is in theory ram starved, so a ram upgrade would help, if not with game speed and such it will certianly make swapping programs faster (i.e. less chugging).

Be carefull that you purchase the correct kind of ram though. It has different speeds that you will probably need to match. Also, you need to make sure you have enough slots for more ram. Motherboards generaly come with 1 slot, 2 slots, or 4 slots. If you buy another stick of 256 to upgrade to 512 and it turns out you only have 1 slot... well bummer, so check first.

If you have 4 slots some types of ram require that you stager them identicaly. Meaning if you have 256 in slot one you have to put another 256 in slot 3, if you try jamming a 512 in slot 2 or 3 or 4 it will have an error. This is rarish though, so you might be safe.

Thanks. Some how from transfering the computer from the living room to my bedroom the video card went from running guild wars to 4mb of ram and not running guild wars.. The new one I bought wont work in the dell. Im using the
dell to play d2 on europe with some people from the site. Im going to return the vid card for the 50$ and put it as a down payment for a new computer
I saw. Then I just have to go into the store once a week and give them
whatever I can. Eventually it will be payed off. Untill then GW sits in the corner of my room.
