My First Matriarch, Komiko the Fendazon

Well, I just struggled through my first Mat. Feels good to finally have seen a character all the way through. Finished up at level 82. Here's the main points of the build I used:

Str 150
Dex 115
Vit 200
Enrgy 15

Fend 20
Valk 20
Decoy 10
D/A/E 5-8 points each
16 Crit Strike
Magic Arrow 1 (I hate having to worry about Ammo)

Ran around with a spear from level 1. Picked up a Cold Rogue, and she did amazing for me. Rarely died because she stayed out of Melee (had my Valk to tank), and between her elemental damage and the magic arrow from the wildwitch string I found for her, helped me cut through PIs (the Amp Damage off it helped too). I also used a rare bow with CtC Amp Damage on switch, for PIs and mobs it was too dangerous to melee.
Notable finds through her career:
Tal Rasha's Crest
Raven Frost
Wisp Projector
Wildwitch String
A Fal and a Lem rune

Anyhow, was a great run. Dunno what I'm going to work on next. Prolly should get a Sorc up there, considering a Paladin though...

Grats!

With the forums full of info on the "fend bug" that makes a build almost useless in the minds of some, I'm amazed. Your build reads like there isn't a bug kicked off by Dodge, etc.

So what's the deal, those of you with experience. How did a Fendazon with the points in D/A/E manage to survive, apparently against the odds?

Thanks!

DrM

Really, what makes it workable is using the Valk to Tank for you. The D/A/E improves my survivability when I get mobbed suddenly, and my Valkarie's, and doesn't hinder most of the time, as most of the mobs are attacking my valkarie.
Now, I still died from time to time, but really, I think it'd be less than people would expect.

And yes, untwinked. I'm slowly building my twink stash (eventually I'd like to perhaps grail, but I doubt I'll put enough time into it to ever finish).

Congratulations on your first.

Now get busy and run some chars more through their paces.

Some of the "cookie cutter" builds may give you a better playing experience. Don't let the "cookie cutter" label deter you from trying one. It just means a lot of folks here have contributed to the refinement of the build and now it works.

Yay, another fendazon. Masterfully done, hero!

I like the way you approached this build in a way completely opposite of mine. I used the suicidal no-dodge, mass-leech, and pray approach. I can imagine that using the valk as a buffer keeps the failed fend cycles away.

It really does wonders, using the valk like that. The other tactic that I rarely used (should have used more) is throwing up the decoy to hold attention while my Valkyrie caught up, those times I ran ahead.

And I'm not apheared of the cookie cutter builds. They are cookie cutter for a reason: they work really well lol And I'll prolly run a few through their paces. I wouldn't say they'd give me a better experience though. Just a different, perhaps easier experience.
