[MOD] Median 2 - discussion

Hello everyone,

Since i am a bit bored with d2 online (due to all the "137n3ss") I am starting to lean towards SP. I am involded in a few tournaments here but that is not enough. I like the gameplay so much, but the content is getting a bit boring to me. So i have been looking around for some mods.

Playing diablo2 for 5 years now, i have played these mods:

Seven Lances
Kingdom of Tenai

i've been nosing around on the net and found a promissing mod called "Median 2".
I didn't have the chance to try it out yet, that's why i'm posting this thread.

Has anyone tried this mod yet?
If so, how do you like it?
What are some of it's best feautures
Would you be interested to organize a tournament in this mod?

I'm asking you all, please discuss this topic.
I am aware i am not allowed to give links to it

Mods are a SP topic and therefore belong in the Single-Player Forum. Be advised that you may discuss mods there, but may not provide links on where to download it or post any technical information about how to install it or make it work.
But if you want a link, feel free to pm me and i'll send you one.

Greetings
oya

There should be a thread about the "Eastern Sun" mod. From what Vega says, it looks like a balanced, original and well developped mod with lots of new features (a universal stash being one of them, so you won't miss ATMA). I didn't read all the thread, though, so your best bet is either someone more knowledgable or the search function.

btw, oya, is it possible that you're Turkish? (for those wondering, Oya is a Turkish female name)

Actually, there is no problem with linking to this mod.

no i'm not turkish :) i'm from belgium and male.
The name comes from a song, made by belgian girl band K3

but thats offtopic

OT: tried the mod briefly yesterday, quite a bit harder then normal Diablo2 :)
But will test it over the weekend.

Just for curiosities sake, why is technical discussion for the creation/installation of mods banned on these forums? I would think that if someone were to create a good mod that people played regularly, tech talk about that mod would be good, to help make it better.

Myself, I play on ES right now, and it got me interested in creating my own mod. I did find other forums that are specifically for that, but it would be nice to discuss ideas with everyone here. I can understand discussion related to cheating specifically would be bad, but changing a game to be "different" after 6 years for something new? I just don't see how that's bad. If anyone can give me the lowdown, it would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Initially, even the discussion of mods were not allowed in purediablo.com forums. As to why technical discussion is prohibited...
1. Mods and cheats are not exclusive (e.g. drop mods, editors etc)
2. There are other forums dedicated to mod making/support (e.g. Phrozen Keep). The site admins don't want this to be one of them, they're happy with the current content.
3. Since a lot of the members know nothing about the mods, and these members like the forums as they are, turning this into a mod forum would drive them away (which leads to the point in the previous sentence)

@ oya: Sorry for the mistake. I did check where you're from, but there are quite a few Turks in Belgium, right?

That's cool. I'm just surprised that's all that there isn't a seperate section just for modmaking and such. I consider drop mods and ATMA to be mods as well, and they haven't hurt the community, rather they seem to have helped the community tons, which is why I'm surprised there is no support for the making of mods that may improve the quality of the game or change it to a fresh sort of experience.

The moderators as it were could choose what is or is not a "hack/exploit" and lock them from being done, but could have a place for people to work on "good" mods (like Eastern Sun and others that I have been hearing about now that I've actually started looking, :) ). Phrozen Keep is where I've started going for all my "modding needs", but it would be nice if it weren't considered an anathema to play/talk about mods, when most good ones are just that, really good.

I can see how the forums clogged with the sort of questions a "tech support forum" would bring might chase off new players (or even old ones), but I would think that a moderated section would keep those posts in the proper place (much like trading is done in the trading sections rather than General Discussion). Just my two cents really.

Since this is the most recent mod topic and it has diverged way off topic anyway, I'll bump this one instead of starting another thread.

If only it were that easy... is the Red Rune Mod 'legit'? Can Zy-El, with its 500K-1000K damage values and equally huge character levels be considered a 'hack'? Is the wall-piercing arrow skill in Median 2006 an 'exploit'? Are the cube recipes in Eastern Sun to generate unique jewelry not a 'cheat'?

Defining 'good mod' is even harder. Many mods have equipment that is better than what you could get in the regular game, and sometimes the monster difficulty compensates for it and sometimes not. Is a mod that is easier than classic LoD due to excessive item drops 'bad'?

......

How about these rules:
- no linking to competing sites allowed (eg. Phrozen Keep);
- no technical discussion about modmaking (Phrozen Keep);
- discussion about installing mods, playing and tactics allowed.

The rules as they are now are pretty vague and open to interpretation (and social capital of the poster), perhaps now would be a good time to set them in stone.

The Phrozen Keep isn't the best place if you are totally new to the world of modmaking. Its mod database has a collection of 1.11 mods, 1.10 mods, 1.09 mods and multi-version mods, often not clearly marked as such and many of which are junk, and the newbie is totally lost and naturally gravitates towards the 'most popular' mods (in this case, ES), making them even more popular.

Additionally, the jaded Phrozen Keep audience kicks on Big Stuffâ„¢, yet Sirian (remember him?) once said that 95% of what's wrong with LoD is the simple things. Balance mods are totally underrated and item-heavy mods are totally overrated at the Keep, and IMO the community is digging its own grave because of that.

Many promising balance/gameplay mods die quickly because Mod X has more itamz and Mod Y has imported monsters from Space Invaders. I believe Median 2006 is the only 'balance' mod that manages to survive precisely because it has the novelty of the new skill tree (Big Stuffâ„¢), but the players who don't want new skills and just want a harder, fairer and more balanced game are currently not served by any mod. The input from this forum could change that.

Humanity looks for the big, not the small. I mentioned in the other mod thread that a mod has to intrigue me: Big stuff does that better than small stuff.

The rules on this wil probably never be set in stone, but they really aren't that tough to follow anyway...

True enough, but links to Phrozen Keep are now ok, as we have redefined that particular site as complimentary, not competing. Even with that said, the admins will not allow links to drop mods or character editors, even at PK.

- no technical discussion about modmaking (Phrozen Keep);
The admins have chosen to keep their forums clear of technical mod (development or support) discussions. Sure the word "technical" is open to interpretation, but again it doesn't seem very tough to follow or enforce.

- discussion about installing mods, playing and tactics allowed.
Not completely accurate. We have no problems with discussions on tactical mod usage (again "tactical" vs "technical" may get blurry). We do not allow discussions on mod installation to continue for very long. I don't delete threads, just close them.
