Merc Aura Leveling up QUestion

I have a question about Merc Aura's.

I know as the merc levels up, his auras gain levels.

Now do you need to keep leveling your merc up to gain these levels, or does hiring a higher level merc mean the aura level is automatically increased?

Mercs aren't Pokemon. When you hire a Merc at a higher level the aura level is automatically increased. Makes things more convenient.

Ok, so what level are the auras per merc level? I'm trying to decide between an Aim merc and a Defiance merc, and my choice is going to depend largely on what level the auras are. Maybe theres a sticky somewhere here, or a Wiki page that has the merc/aura levels listed? I'm pretty new to the forums here so forgive me if this is a noob question.
