Melee Paladin Help! Don't know how to play this game anymore.

So, I have a Orphan's Call Pally, I'm going with:

20 Zeal, 20 Sacrifice, 20 Fanatism and 1 point wonders (all of them - redemption, vigor, even meditation).

Gear:

Orphan's Call: 15% Ias/AR on Helm, PDiamond on shield
Armor: Shaftstop
Ammy: Highlord's
Rings: Rare with resists and AR + 235 AR Ravenfrost
Boots: Nat's
Weapon: BA Grief


I don't want to put more than 1 point on holy shield, since it's on lvl 10 after buffs (beta CTA, Spirit, Set bonuses, highlords).

I'm on lvl 67 right now and already cleared hell's den of evil. I saved 1 skill point so far, iirc. That means I will have 20 points to spend on lvl 83 (counting Izual and Radamant). What should I do with them?

1) Vengeance
2) Holy Shock/Freeze/Fire
3) Resist Something (lightning or fire) for extra All res
4) You completely forgot...

Points in Blessed Aim give a passive bonus to Attack Rating, so that's usually a good spot. (I don't remember exactly how much)
 
Do a dual element build and go Zeal/Fana/HShock/LResist and put Crescent Moon PB on switch.

That sounds way more fun, and I'm sure you have two Whitstan's.

Just let me shake some rust off first.

Holy shield. You did say that you didn't want to put points here, but im gunna argue the point. it will increase your armor, shield block chance so you need less dexterity for 75% block chance and increases the duration so you have to cast it less. One of the survival secrets of my schaeferdin was a huge defence (30k plus) from maxxed out holy shield and 19 in defiance (at level 99). game checks attacks for hits versus defence then shield block. So if you have a 30% chance to be hit via defence then another 75% chance after that from shield blocking, 30%/4 = 7.5% total chance of being hit. Being hit less often might be handy.

Blessed aim. Passive increase of your attack rating. wont make much difference with ITD, but will against bosses.

Defiance. Synergy for more defense, but no point if you don't raise your defence via holy shield either.

Lightning resistance. Raises your lightning resists cap to 85%. Your defences against cold should be ok with raven frost so pumping up your lightning defences could be good. Highlords amulet will help you get them up to 85% or go fire, which ever you prefer.

you forgot, 20 points in Prayer, I would have 5 pointed with pluses Zeal

Get a Merc with Prayer and Insight

Smite is good with 1 point and sol runes etc for -minus to PDR

Fanatic zealots have lots of extra skill points. That's just how they are.
If you have a merc with reapers, you don't need holy shock as backup either. Most PIs will be broken by sanctuary anyway.

Recently for 1H zealots questing or baalrunning I prefer maxing cleansing, as it gets amp/decrep/poisons off very quickly.

And yes, I completely ignored bonus def. from Holy shield! That really makes sense, since behind years of fog I remember using HoZ + Fortitude + High Holy Shield (not max) and that was very good, thanks for pointing it out.

I'm wearing shaftstop right now. Shaftstop... That means "open armor slot". I got lots of bases on MFO.

The char is build, number crunch wise: 55% FHR breakpoint, Enough IAS iirc (if I plan to go Schaeffer someday, I'll have to use Treachery) and block is doing well. I have to level him up to see how AR is doing (Highlord's, ravenfrost, some from helm, set iirc, fana...).

I don't plan to go with elemental damage aura because PIs die somehow and I'm ok with that (merc is using eth hone sundam due to his lvl). After some math, I'll end with:

- Max HS, for uber def (depending on armor choice) - dunno if I'll have spare points for defiance.
- Blessed Aim for AR, if needed.
- Resist Lightning/Fire (not likely)

@bobcox: Why prayer? You get a bonus on something? I haven't forgot that, I never knew it, if it was the case. :scratchhead:
 
1 point in Sanctuary is handy to completely remove Undead PI, and you can get the Defiance from a defensive A2 merc (that's what I did with my Schaeferdin) if you do decide to pump Holy Shield.

Quick question - how much does it cost you to keep that BA repaired?
 
I'm guessing an Ort. (You're allowed to repair runewords with this recipe, right?)

Too tiresome to keep picking up gold. It would cost roughly 30k to repair, which isn't that much, it's only annoying that BA durability is very low and it breaks often.
