Thoughts

Well, this one's been on the table for a long time, the goal being to make a frost amazon capable of kicking *** and being very smooth and easy to play. I had gathered up the items for a long time and used respecs on a lvl 94 alt to try it out in about 100 players 8 Worldstone keep runs, so there weren't many surprises. All that was left was to make a new character, and play it through the game..

With all the items equipped, this was a difficult character to play.. Not. I rolled through the whole game at p8 ( excepting bosses ). Turns out playing through the game is much easier than doing players 8 worldstone keep runs. Holy freeze aura and knockback shut down melee enemies, slow missiles and decoy shut down ranged ones, and anything non cold immune was frozen and shattered or slowed by mass frost nova procs. Exploding arrow did an okay job dealing with immunities ( why anyone would use strafe for this purpose, EA is 100 times better ), merc/GA killed dual immunes. A 1k manapool with 12% ML kept potion popping to a minimum and 23% LL helped too. I could have done with a little more frw though, and constantly needing to pick up arrows was irritating, but nothing to be done about that. I also avoided getting poisoned ( or used antidotes ), as I had low poison resists.

There was one part of the game that gave me pause, WSK1 with 2-3 bosspacks of frenzytaurs ( unaffected by freeze ), with might, fanaticism, extra fast with CI witches behind them with amp, multishot, extra strong. Boy, those took a while and a lot of retreating, slow missiles, decoy and many merc revives. But otherwise yeah, it's very strong and really enjoyable to play. Pierce+splash ownz. There is something hypnotic about shooting a few arrows and watching the whole screen explode into showers of tiny ice crystals.

I have to say this build was quite invincible until hell. Gloams were murder, and in fact any undead/pi are deadly because i cannot leech them! I hate constantly buying mana pots. Offensively she is slightly weaker with ~6000 AR, but GA, LF, ad CS were always hit attacks, so it wasnt too big of a deal. Defensively, however, she was stupidly fragile. Negative resists didnt help :mad:

However, Ancients were easier than i thought, and WSK and baal i had litle problems, except for the gloams that seem to spawn everywhere.
So basically as long as I wasnt hit by anything I was fine.

I went into this untwinked and played single pass fullclears, which is why I have some comparatively underwhelming equipment choices. That said, Nightmare Diablo was wonderful to me when he gave up the belt, as was NM Baal with the helm; and despite picking up every blue/yellow matriarchal javelin and gambling/rerolling countless rings and amulets, I never gained anything better than an (admittedly nice) blue ring on one finger and the blue javelin in my hand. Come Hell difficulty I focused mainly on Fire resist because Thundergod's had the Lightning Absorb to help keep me alive in gloam fights.

Mercenary was an Act 2 Prayer Merc. Why Prayer? I needed it to keep the Valkyrie alive and to keep him alive as they stood between the bad guys and me. See, one of the stipulations of the Sudden Death Tourney is that we can either go merc or minions...not both. Rather foolishly, I went minions, which means a Valk. She was useless except as a recastable damage sponge once to about Act 3 NM (she was essentially that starting in about Act 4 Normal, but NM is when she really started to fall behind due to a lack of hard points/+skills to the Passive Tree). Anyhow, merc's gear:

Level and play was done at /p8 through Hell Act 1, at which point I dialed it back to /p1. I was a mana guzzler extraordinaire. Charged Strike was my go-to skill, with LF being used against mobs and Freezing Arrow against especially dangerous foes (Doom/Oblivion Knights, mostly, but the odd unique and his crew fell under that umbrella as well) and of course Lightning Immunes.

First death was against Normal Baal after he and a tentacle hentai'd me with dual critical hits. After that, I didn't die again until Act 2 Hell when a Cold Enchanted/Fire Enchanted/Extra Strong blood hawk rained on my parade and exploded essentially right next to me. Those things are like snipers. Two more deaths occurred in Act 5, one in the Frozen River (Gloams plus the two different types of Succubi ugh) and one (admittedly stupid one) against Nihlathak while CSing his face and getting Corpse Exploded at near point-blank range after the bolts zagged and took down some Ice Boars the merc was tanking.

Hell Ancients were a painful pain. Madawc spawned LI so I needed to separate him in order to get anywhere. That happened and after many, many Full Rejuvenation potions it was down to merc plus valk plus me against him and Freezing Arrow eating my mana bulb, but I was essentially immortal with Prayer doing its work. Hooray not being able to restock on blues! Oh, and the Hell Hellforge gave up a Lem. Now I have I think 6 of them total.

Now I have a WSK/Act V in general runner. I'm not the swiftest or most effective quite yet (I still need to actually sit down and twink her out with AT LEAST a rare javelin), but I have done a couple of Act 5 hot spot sweeps (Eldritch/Shenk, Pindle, and the WP in Glacial Trail is at most two teleports from the sparkly chest so it's easily run) and it's definitely enjoyable...maybe work towards an Enigma? Anyhow, since I find most MF runs boring, it's a nice change of pace to feel like I'm actually "questing" while killing things. The fact that it's Act V also causes me to hope a Zod will drop with every slain monster, popped corpse or opened chest.

For the future...well, I've got an untwinked Avenger parked in NM Act 2. With regard to new characters, no builds really come to mind...maybe a windy druid? Entering a tournament? Dunno!

P8 Norm & NM, P1 Hell.

As you might've guessed, ForestFawn used the (slvl30!) Exploding Arrow from a .09 Raven Claw synergized by Fire Arrow to handle lightning immunes. This also gave me a really convenient way to level from 15 'til when LF becomes viable.

Stat points were left over cause I didn't know what my cow running gear would be, and wanted as much life as possible. Meh.

Why this build is awesome:
A fully synergized slvl 30 Exploding Arrow completely pwns Normal. It one-hit kills just about everything through A3Norm. On P8. I only had some trouble in A4 because of massive monster HPs. It then went back to pwning in A5. I actually used Raven Claw all the way up to lvl42, when Titan's are available, as I don't really have a suitable rare Jav for leveling.

No mana cost, cause it's a regular attack. As I was using the Raven Claw mostly to level until I could get LF up and kicking, this is awfully convenient. There's nothing worse than mana-intensive skills while you're leveling.

Exploding Arrows autohit, and pierce like crazy. Even though EA peaked in around A3Norm, effective herding and piercing made it fairly viable, if a bit slow through P1 Hell.

20pts for a backup skill. This is nice. My last LF Zon used an unsynergized Plague Javelin. Some people like it; I'm not a fan of running around in circles while stuff dies. <shrugs> This isn't any faster, but at least I feel like an active participant. It's also a helluva lot faster starting out.


Why I wanted to tear my hair out:
It kind of sucks when your backup skill peaks in power in A3 Norm. It was pretty much entirely downhill from there. It's just more than a little frustrating to have such a large power gap between your main killing skill and your backup.

And I hate carrying arrows. Hate it hate it hate it. Takes up inventory that I could be using for stuff to sell. Pet peeve of mine, what can I say.

If I were to do this again, I'd consider running an outright Mageazon, rather than a LF hybrid. It's just too annoying to have non-LIs die in two hits and LIs take forever.

Prolly something like 20 Fire Arrow, 20 Freezing Arrow, 20 Freezing Arrow Synergy (the one that adds damage), and maybe 20 in Immolation. Else 20 in Valk. Herd stuff, freeze it, burn it with Immo, and blow it up with Raven Claw. Inventory full of cold charms to keep the freeze duration up in Hell. It's an idea. Fishy, you wanna play this one? How many 'zons do you have again?

That about sums it up. She'll now be retired to Cow runs, which was her original purpose anyway. Kinda wish I hadn't blown the 7 points to get Valk. D/A/E is annoying as heck. I think I'd rather have the LF synergies. Oh, well...

After having gone on a D2-hiatus about 7 months ago, it was time to continue this character again. I had reached Act V NM with Syrinx before the hiatus, and after about one weeks play she is now a Matriarch :)

I found the LF/FA setup to be awesome throughout Normal and Nightmare, but in Hell it was a bit less fun at times. Especially when facing dual-immunes or monsters with Lightning immunity and dangerous elemental attacks, since my resists were pretty weak in bow-mode and my merc tended to live up to the moron moniker.

During the course of play, though, Syrinx more than made up for this by getting the most perfect WSK2 and WSK3 maps I've ever seen:

During questing, she also produced three grailers; Herald of Zakarum, Tiamat's Rebuke, and Arcanna's Sign. She also came pretty close to producing a fourth grailer, but unfortunately the monster that dropped a unique Conqueror Crown was level 84 instead of the required level 85. So Larzuk is now one triple-durability rare richer, instead of me being one Halaberd's Reign richer :)

I'll be using similar gear in my MF setup, but swapping in an Um'd Shako, Skullder's w/Topaz, different rare gloves w/19 MF, 20 IAS, and some lightning res, and a rare ring w/fire & lightning res and some MF. Plus Gheed's of course. If I find Gloams are a problem I might swap in TGod's for Razortail.

Thoughts:

1) Normal and Nightmare were a breeze. The only annoying thing was constantly having to repair my javelin until level 42 when I could equip Titan's. Thank Cheesus for self-replenish and increased stack size. Hell itself didn't give me many problems either once I had Freezing Arrow's synergy maxed out. The main issue was mana; even with Insight, my piddly ~200 mana pool disappeared in no time when using FA. The +78 mana ring helped with this, though.

2) Really happy that I went with the Prayer merc for this build. This is the first time I've used one. I picked him because I knew I'd be using Insight and I'd heard about the Prayer+Insight synergy, and the constant regen is particularly nice with this character because she can't rely on leech to stay topped up. It can be a bit annoying if my merc's dead, but it's not a huge deal, I just suck it up and drink some pots.

3) I heart Decoy. I love having a recastable tank that doesn't move. I think Decoy is more useful than my merc at actually, you know, tanking things, because she actually stands there and takes a beating like she's supposed to, while in the meantime Jemali is wandering off or hiding behind a wall.

4) Hell Ancients were brutal, which surprised me since I haven't really had problems with them on other characters, and the rest of the game was so easy for this char. I don't even want to think about how many attempts it took. My merc just got vaporized by them every time, and Decoy could really only buy me a few seconds. Eventually I managed to get a reasonable set of mods and took them down by tanking one myself, keeping one on my Decoy, and letting my merc tank the other, and by using potions I'd dropped all over the ground. Whatever works, I guess.

5) Just for fun, here is the worst boss I faced in Hell (other than the Ancients). I died like 6 times to that guy. I could barely even target him for a screenshot because he was zooming all over the place. I thought about parking him, but I'm really weird and stubborn about stuff like this sometimes; I hate to think that there is anything I can't kill. So I kept at it and finally, revenge was mine. I have to say, I hate frenzytaurs. I mean, I really hate them, probably more than any other type of monster. Nothing should be that fast and also hurt that much.

7) Started WSK running for the area lvl 85 tourney and really pleased with it so far, she's quite a bit less squishy than my Meteorb and much more fun to play too. Really looking forward to running with her.

* Been there, done that. I needed a runner, so I leveled her up.
* Ancients took 40+ rerolls. FE CE Korlic caused her only death. I chanced it in the hope that she would block the explosion. She didn't.
* Not having Evade ... meant she got hit more. Huh? I've never found Evade lock a problem 'cause the decoy and the valk take the hits, not the amazon. Not having a valk made her a little more open to attack.
* Forge: Hel/Lem. Hrrmph.

Notes: This one actually still had a fair bit of NM to do since starting up 1.13, but it took no time at all. Things were so facerolly in NM, that Hell was a pretty rough adjustment in some areas for Kessa. It's more than made up for with her fairly rediculous luck with maps. Outside of having a bad LK map, every zone i'd care to run has a pretty good map. WSK and Meph are particularly good, and CS had an abundance of shrines, although not perfectly placed by any means. The Occy and Shako were traded for back when, though ironically since returning to her she found her own in 1.13.


I took my time with her a fair bit, spending the entirely of LV82->83 farming Meph, and 83->84 farming CS + Diablo. Act 5 rather forced me to take my time by giving me the most ridiculous guest monsters throughout. Payback, perhaps for some very good luck farming diablo and meph.


Future plans are to mostly just be an MFer. I might consider making a HOTO if Occy annoys me too much, and possibly making a project of crafting/gambling a better pair of boots, but that's about it.





Matriarch Nylia, the Fishyzon

A real blast to play with two very fun main skills, that make mince meat of large groups. The only downside, if it can be called that, is the significant slow down when left with small single targets. OTOH, large single targets drop like stones to a charged strike. She had a considerably easier time in hell than Kessa, though a harder time with the ancients, I think, for all that decoy made it easier to split them up.

One of my first characters after a fresh start some years ago, that ended up getting put on hold when I was distracted with making a blizz sorc. The Titan's and Shako were traded for, but IIRC the rest were found by either this char, or the blizz or meteorb sorcs. Oddly, just like Kessa, Nylia did end up finding a Titan's Revenge herself since returning. As well as a Thunderstroke, which Nightfish's guide recommends switching in for baal.


Future plans are running WSK + Baal, and in general trying to improve her gear. The big focus is improving her resists so I can swap out the vipermagi for skullder's, and make room for MF charms (not to mention get max lightning when using a bow). I am also considering dropping Rhyme for Stormshield (I have the unspent points to do so), but I'm unsure. Once that's done, it's the long term project of crafting/gambling the best 1.07 +3 bow / IAS gloves possible, and WSK to eternity.

Matriarch Silya - Untwinked Tri-Elemental Amazon

This is my second untwinked Amazon Matriarch, and a very enjoyable character. She started as a character in the untwinked level 99 progress thread, and the original plan was to start as a Poison / FA zon, then respec to a lightning based build. However, the Poison / FA build was so much fun that I decided to stay with it and add a bit of lightning damage to deal with dual immunes (Act V Cold Mages and Vipers) or nearly dual immunes (primarily, Skeletons in The Pit). Add Guided Arrow to the mix and get a character that can run any area in the game without struggling, albeit less efficiently than specialized builds. Currently, her favourite are the Pits, but AT, CS or WSK work great as well.

Her progress through Normal, Nightmare and up to Hell Act III can be read in the untwinked level 99 progress thread. In Normal, she was a pure poison build using a RalRalRal Long Bow and the merc for the final blows. In Nightmare, Plague Javelin is nerfed considerably since many critters get poison resistance, so all skill points were immediately dumped into Freezing Arrow and Cold Arrow. It was not until Act IV that FA could kill anything on its own, but from there the build simply rocked. The main contributor to this was NM Mephisto who was so kind as to drop a Kuko Shakaku with its +3 bow, +50% pierce properties.

Hell difficulty consisted mainly of getting to Ancient Tunnels, then Lower Kurast. She got a godly LK map, and ~ 100 LK runs were enough to obtain the runes for a Call To Arms, and a critter in AT was so kind to drop a +2 GMB. Add a +2 jav, +2 zon, replenishes quantity rare javelin from Hell Pindle and this character is pretty much set. I did not do dedicated boss runs of any kind although I did clear the Chaos Sanctuary a few times because it is one of my favourite areas in the whole game.

Act V was safe and fun to play. I love moat tricking. And window tricking. Ancients went down on the first try - very favourable roll, one Holy Freeze guy that was a bit of pain but nothing serious. Silya could not manage to separate them but that was not even necessary, since Plague Javelin and the occasional Crushing Blow from the merc's Obedience did the trick perfectly. Apart from Oblivion Knights in level 2 and the Throne Room, WSK had only clown monster types (LI Lancers, FI Raiders, FI Blowdart Fetishes, LI Horror Mages, CI Vampires, CI Witches and the harmless viper type - poison immune and magic damage). I was a bit scared about lots of Oblivion Knights next to the Throne but Achmel's crew could be kept frozen at all times so it was not an issue in the end.

Compared to a Fishyzon, the build is even safer (PJ is a great hit-and-run attack) and the attacks really integrate with each other, instead of simply using different elements according to enemies' immunity. The usual gameplay is to emit a poison cloud of death, then end your enemies' suffering by FA or Lightning Fury.

Silya did wear a lot of MF during her journey and as a result, she gathered 225 set/unique items in total, some of which were grailers for me, such as one of Bul-Kathos' swords. The merc was getting along well with a 4 PTopaz armour until Hell Act V where Treachery was made for the Ancients fight.

Overall, Silya's Baal-beating gear is an interesting assortment of lucky drops and totally ragged items. Untwinked is a very fun playstyle indeed.

Matriarch Marletta - Untwinked Gunslinger

Another untwinked Amazon Matriarch, after Hope the Spearazon and Silya the Jack of all Trades FA/PJ/LF 'zon.

Gameplay (caution wall of text ahead):

Normal
(/p8): Mostly single-pass except for a few Countess and Meph runs. Jabbing and normal attack until a TirTirTir Large Shield was available, which covers the mana cost of Charged Strike quite well at /p8. Rhyme was made but not used until NM.

Nightmare (/p8, /p3 for bosses): Single-pass full clear except for ~10 Meph runs which yielded squat. After maxing CS, pumped LF and Valkyrie. The armor used throughout most of NM was a Mechanic's (2) Splint Mail of the Colossus (52) socketed with 2 PTopaz, and her javelin a +4 MPK War Javelin.

In Act III, an Insight Partizan was made for the Merc, Wormskull dropped for the Merc and Tarnhelm for Marletta - it remained her endgame helmet. Furthermore, a Merciless Ceremonial Javelin (+1) of Swiftness (+30 IAS) was found which could likely have been her endgame javelin. 9fpa CS / 11fpa LF are just sweet. After that, the rest of NM was simply steamrolled.

The decision what to do about LIs in Hell was not made until the fight against NM Baal, who dropped a l337 Burrito Cannon. Other very useful finds included Raven Frost in one of the ice caves, and Lum + Fal runes. A 4os armor did not drop before Act V NM, but socketed with 1 PRuby + 3 PTopaz, it made it well into Hell difficulty before being replaced by Lionheart.

Hell (/p3 and /p1 for Act IV+V): Mostly full clear. Den of Evil runs until 77, which yielded a 4os Monarch. Lots of LI/PIs showed up which were a major nuisance with the Burrito Cannon on switch and without Treachery on the merc.

Luckily, a 4os Shadow Bow dropped in one of the dungeons (Catacombs?). Marletta had found 3 (!) Ko runes by that time, so the decision to make Harmony was made lightly. Low-end +%ED roll but that does not matter much.

After Act II, a Spirit Monarch was created to provide a bit more of +skills, and Raven Frost from now on served for an AR boost and additionally CBF on the bow switch. A major increase in killing power at the expense of MF. Furthermore, an ethereal +8 LL Vamp Gaze dropped to replace the merc's Wormskull. In Act III, Marletta's only death incurred at the hands of a double bat bosspack in the Swampy Pit.

After that, the rest of the game was completed rather quickly, with a few Pindle runs from 85.5 to 86 in between. The monster spawn in Act V was quite favorable (no archers or rats) until the Ancients' Way which had LI Frenzytaurs and a boss pack which was parked for comfort and safety. Ancients themselves were rather easy, no tactics were involved, Marletta just ran around and spammed decoys and arrows until they were dead.

WSK had gloams and unravellers on level 2 including a convicting spectral hit pack, and gloams again in the Throne Room, but Achmel's pack was obliterated before they could resurrect more than one of them. Bartuc was convicting and took some retreating and regrouping, but wave 4+5 simply melted to the power of LF. Baal was nice enough not to clone himself and so not much time was wasted before the group went for a barbecue.

Endgame LCS.

Thoughts and future plans:

A powerful character for sure, though overall not as safe as the FA/PJ/LF build, and no added damage from interleaving attacks. Her biggest nemesis are reviving LI unravellers and LI Frenzytaurs: no method of corpse disposal or slowing down enemies.

On the other hand, a very powerful and safe Pindle runner: use Harmony for running to the portal, run straight to Pindle's doorstep (so that the merc stays behind you and covers your back), cast Valk in the middle of the pack so that they don't charge towards you, switch to jav and LF to oblivion; if Pindle is LI and the Valk can't kill him fast enough, run past him to make the merc catch up.

I've tried quite some LF based zons and this was by far the most fun character (and the only one I could bear to take through all of Hell). The Harmony switch for fast progressing combined with the slow moving Phalanx look of javelin + shield + skull cap is pretty stylish IMO.

I was untwinked until L17 and stopped playing 1.12 several months ago to concentrate on my 1.07 sept. I came back to this gal in November 2008 and after slapping on 1.07 Ravenclaw I zipped through Normal and NM on P8. Naturally, once Titan's and T-gods were available she continued to run rampant over everything. I went down to P1 for all Ancients, P5 for NM Diablo and P3 for NM Baal. Through NM I was using Sazabi's Mental Sheath and the merc used a "Smoke" Dusk Shroud until Hell A5. Didn't really rerun any areas as P8 clears gave me plenty of XP. Entered Hell at L70 or so. A couple of deaths to being cursed and not blocking, an FE explosion, and some Fireball/Meteor/Firewall nastyness in the Kurat Temples.

Hell was challenging but rewarding. Act 1 through 3 were taken at P5, then P3 in A4 and A5 until WSK which was taken at P1 until the Throne Room where I went to P3. I leveled up to 80 in P5 Pit runs, and "Peace" was actually very useful here for the CtC Slow Missles. This ability also made an easy Hell Ancient's roll a cakewalk--Madwac may have well been frozen for all that he did in that battle. No real issues with the build; Nightfish is pretty darn good at this game and even my poor skill placement and subpar gear took the game quickly and at high settings.

I did run into a death and then S&E to reclaim my body in The Ancient's Way: Fanatic LI Dark Lancers + 2 packs of EF/ES LI Frenzytaurs. I ran and ran looking for an exit or the waypoint and eventually ran out of places to escape to. The Anceints were easy with CI/FI Whirler, CI Leaper, and LI/LE Teleportation Thrower who was a non-entity with Slow Missles. I think my team used 20 healing and mana potions total. I tried to take Hell Baal at P3, but after the second trip to town for mana potions, I dialed it down and got my Isenhardt's Horns.

Commentary:
"Peace" is pretty good for cheap--the Valk is sturdy enough that she rarely dies before she is recast. Unfortunately, it looks like the Valk casting causes a casting delay and interrupts LF throwing.

Lavagout were very helpful with "Melody"; AR and some fire damage never hurt anybody. Well, except for the monsters.

If I did it again, I'd get a 1 pt Decoy and skip D/A/E + Valk for better synergies while playing more conservatively. Resists can be made up with charms, and I don't have many skillers.

The build could easily work untwinked, and is dead simple. Decoy, Slow Missles, and D/A/E work wonders for survivability. D/A/E making me miss wasn't too big of an issue, I really just needed to position myself and cast Decoy. Kudos again to Nightfish for testing and explaining this one.

Retirement:
I'm muling up +2 J&S MF gloves, +3/10% IAS gloves, my 2 skillers, and +2 Ama skills hat and ammy from 1.07 to turn this gal into a Cowgirl after I give her a "Splendor". I need to find a Shaftstop and a Rockstopper/Vamp Gaze for the merc because he'll have to stay home otherwise. She has a serious blue pot habit, but the cows drop plenty of them. Here's to more EU drops!

Hi all, long time no see: I've posted a re-introduction thread a while ago. After that I was doing some MF runs with my blizzwaller (didn't mat her yet), but at some time I was getting bored and since Meph was so kind to me, dropping Thuderstrokes and Titans I've decided to try an Amazon. Browsing Hrus's build guide and the Pat/Mat/Guardian sticky I've found nightfish's build and decided to give it a try.
I'm pretty satisfied with her, she is a FAST killer, I don't even remember a single thing about normal or nightmare. All normal was done at p8, nightmare was all at p8 but act bosses + ancients. LF simpy pwns everything and FA gives all the time in the world against though bosspacks: decoy + freeze from FA = dead baddies. Too bad FA eats mana very quickly, even with the meditation aura from merc's Insight on, but still is no big deal as there are plenty of mana pots around.
Hell was a quite hard, manly because of my carelessness. I've decided to stay at p1 all the way, even if the killing speed was ok at p3, because my merc died every few seconds, really, even with shaftstop+vamp gaze. The moron has a suicide attitude, the typical combat scene looked like this:

Merc: "Whohooo! Fanatic extra strong cursed fire enchanted beetles? Here I come!"
Me: "Stand back, you moron!"
*WHACK*
Merc: "AAAARGH!"

After I've realized how dangerous bosspacks are (especially when 2-3 aura enchanted boospacks spawn together), I've begun using Decoy heavily to scout ahead. That helped a lot, especially in the underground areas oft act V and the WSK of course. Lvl 6 Decoy can stand a couple of hits from baddies, driving some of the heat from my merc and giving me the time to read the immunities (I don't remember off the top of my head the immunities of every monster - yet) and fry/freeze them.
All bosses in normal and nm where annihilated real fast by CS, Duriel in Hell took a bit to kill, but he died in the end.
I've tried to kill Hell Ancients maybe 15 times. I've even died 2-3 times, due to my carelessness again: I should have realized that when two are dual immunes (lighting and cold obviously), one is fanatic extra strong extra fast and another has might the fight really can't be won... To bad I've checked the mods only AFTER the You have died message... They also have the annoying habit of ignoring the decoy, even when cast before their very eyes. Only the whirler was attracted by it, the other two just went after ME!
After burning 900000 gold to resurrect the merc and many muling of full rejuvs from my potionz stash (I'm glad to have 300+ full juvs stash) they finally went down.
The WSK spawned Horadrim ancients, oblivion knights, doom knights and gloams. They were all handled without great problems, I've only had to run from 3 bosspacks close together, but after two merc deaths (again, my fault as I was slow feeding him potions) they died.
Baal's minions where really easy. While tey were busy with the decoy I just hit them with LF and they went down. I didn't even have the time to notice the mods on them. Only Lister's pack caused me some trouble: they managed to kill the merc, but decoy+LF+CS finally won over them.
The fight with Baal was annoying, because the moron kept attacking the appendages instead of the bad guy himself, so I had to TP back to town to restock on potions. When I came back the merc started hitting him with Kelpie + CB from Guillaume's Face and the fight ended in a few seconds. I was really happy when I saw a unique serpentskin armor drop, I was looking for one! Too bad it was like this:

Introduction
She was clearly based off Nightfish's guide and she did reasonably well with gear found from NM & Hell Mephisto.

Theme
I'm sure most people are familiar with the Greek story that Hippolyte/Hippolyta was an Amazonian queen who possessed a magical girdle/belt. To that end, I personalised her Thundergod's Vigor.

Journey
Can't remember much but apparently she found Waterwalks and War Travellers. She was a WSK & Baal runner, so her merc used a trusty upped Kelpie and she used a high roll Thunderstroke to take Baal down. From what I remember, certain spawns in WSK were still very tough for her - especially lightning immunes because mana was still an issue even with Insight. She was also one of my first Amazons since my restart in 2007-ish and she was the first to use Thunderstroke - so all in all a fun character to play.

She's a Lightning Javazon/Strafer Hybrid. So far she feels a bit week in both areas, but then again, nothing has been able to stand against her for long. I would like to get 10-12 more levels and throw on my top gear and see just how she does. Regardless, I am unimpressed enough that I plan to try another. I think huge potential is here, I just need to get it right.

Edit: (its only 4 years later) Both this zon and the following attempt felt underpowered around level 80 when most chars feel near complete. BUT another 10 levels and a bit better gear and this becomes one nasty build. I ended up being very happy with her.

Also she scores my crappy rune award, her best find, including Hell Hellforge was a Hel rune.:sad2:

Patriarch Tempest (lvl 79)

This was my first druid and my second char since my restart, he was twinked but only with so-so items. He was a bit slow in normal while waiting for some skills to use. Then he just destroyed everything in nightmare. In Hell, his lack of good gear hampered him a but he could still deal with everything. His biggest problems are big hard hitting high HP monsters. Oak sage helped a bit but was usually killed so quickly it wasn't of any real use.

He had a terrible time with the ancients. He actually fared Ok but he kept getting stuck or stuned or locked. It felt buggy to me but I don't really know what was going on.

Hear ye hear ye, the story of Vahana and her ascent to matriarchy. After a long stretch of playing only on ladder, I have again embraced the merit of singleplayer and the wonderful convenience of GoMule.

Vahana is a proud Amazon warrior, born under the sign of the Fishy. She wields the power of frost in her left hand, and the power of lightning in her right hand and have decided to face the perils of hell without the help from the valkyries that often protect her people.

She set out as many others, cutting her path forward with a dull, rusted javelin and steel sharp determination. A bit into her journey she made friends with an ex palaceguard named Gulzar, and together they faced all perils the three prime evils could throw at them.

A great pair of gloves for a bow Amazon. Good thing I really like amazons. And a decent upgrade for Gulzar, at least until we find him a pike with a decent mod.
Later, after rerunning Andariel a bit (when I had "maybe 5 min" playsessions) she found one of the best low level set items.

For me, Death's sash and Glegaw's gloves are both really top tier low level items. Cannot be frozen is so nice to have.

While the powers of frost and lightning made short work of any enemies set before them, Gulzar was starting to worry about his friends drinking habits. Many were the blue beverages bulging from her breeches as they left the borough, big was the banquet of blue brew that was imbibed before breakfast.
He knew that since knowledge is half the battle, insight would be needed to solve this problem. In the arreat plateu he found the first piece, and the strange land of beastial bovines provided the second.

They carried on into hell itself, staying a while in the pit to grow strong. When pushing forward, they found indications that Gheed might have tried to charm the queen of hell herself for favours. Could this be the source of his fortune? Then again, we did gamble quite a few circlets from him.

The first unsurmountable challenge for Vahana came at the ancients. She had tasted the bitterness of death a few times over the journey. As had Gulzar. But they always managed to grit their teeth and push on. But the ancients were something else. With two out of her three attacks (FA and LF) designed for crowds, and her third attack leaving her in melee (CS), she found herself having great trouble passing the test of the Nephalem.



After a few fruitless attempts, she sought the advice of the oracles. After their advice, she trained herself to better use a shield and used the legendary Stormshield she had found earlier. With this increased durability to physical violence, the advice and tools from the oracles and a blessing from one of the most legendary Amazon warriors, she faced the ancients once again. And this time...

I then used her to run baal a bit. With the reduction in vitality brought out by the points allocated in STR and DEX, she was a little bit weaker to elemental attacks. So Gloams were a problem, but I could usually make my way through them anyway.

Except that one time when they stair-trapped me. I tried to at least get my body, to mitigate the exp loss, but died so fast every time. At the time of my S&E, I had gathered the body with my items aswell. But since I had STR-bugged the Stormshield on...

...it was still on the corpse, and was lost at the S&E. :( I am still a bit grumpy about it.

Discussion:

Like her friends, Sara was going players3 all the way, and also went untwinked until Hell, where she was allowed 3 items to be twinked on. I went with the obvious Titans and Razortail, but regretted it later. Sure, it's nice to have ~90% pierce, but I would have changed it for a bit sturdier merc in a heartbeat. Zanarhi was having some serious trouble staying alive with the *cough* less than optimal gear. Luckily I scored the Tal's mask, which helped some. I could've done way better itemwise with some shopping/gambling, but Sara was broke all the time due to the merc and the fact that she pretty much needed to have the meditation aura on.

Gameplay was twofold, in a way. With large groups of monsters going was pretty easy, just herd them a bit and end it with a couple of LFs, or freeze the lot of them with FA. Things got a lot tougher when facing only few monsters. Preferred method for me was to use FA, but with CI's you'd have to get personal, and Sara does not have enough life to get personal with monsters in hell. Toughest part was definitely the ice caves in A5. I had to reroll monster spawns a few times, because at this point, Sara can't take frenzytaurs and gloams by herself, and Zanarhi wasn't about to get useful all of a sudden.

I died a lot on the way. Most situations were just because I was just trying to rush along and not take necessary time to think. She had a funny (and scary) fight with Nihlathak. I thought that I might have a chance to just run into Nihlys chamber and spam LF, since the room is filled with the boars and Nihlathak in the middle, just like LF wants them. Well, the boars all died quickly of course, but Nihly still had 1/3 life left. Still, I think it worked better than I really thought. Now to get the last hits with all those corpses in there... *bam* there's a CE and I was left with just a sliver of life. *chuck* a purple went down. *bam* I had 60 life left. *chuck* *bam* *chuck*... and then I had to get more rejuvs from town. Casting decoy next to Nihly made him use the cold breath and allowed me to close in on him.

Ancients were hard, of course. Five first tries there was cursed -> no dice. Took a few tries more but eventually got a set without curse and no CI/LI, though Madawc was LI. For some reason the Ancients paid absolutely NO attention to the decoy and came straight for me and Zanarhi. For a while I tried using LF but three enemies is just not enough for it to shine. CS, on the other hand, doesn't work too well with the smaller size monsters and none of the released sparks were hitting anything. Oh well, luckily I had collected a decent stash of rejuvs for Zanarhi.. Madawc, with his lightning immunity was last. He, failing his combat-awareness check, managed to get stuck between a hard place and a cold shower. The pic also shows I'm all out on potions. Including those dropped on the ground. Phew..

Fighting Baal was annoying, since Baal thought that he'd delegate all the fighting to his tentacles. Only now I really realised that those appendages actually hurt! Sara was killed by them once, after one of Baal's tentacle-casting frenzies. She was surrounded, failing to get away and unable to kill them. But of course, in the end she was victorious.

Future plans:

Sara's planned primary goal is getting me the Cow set. But first off, I'll be gearing her properly and see what she's like then. Then it's probably WSK/Baal or Pits for a while, or just straight to cows. But not until I make her a certain runeword... I'll be posting more about it later. :wink2:

A while back, Atil quite generously donated a Windforce to Callador, who in turn held another giveaway after finding a second one himself. And the various 1p wonders.

Then plan of the build was to maximise the damage of the Windforce with the highest dex I could manage and using Fortitude, while making the build as safe as possible with the use of Delirium. I decided early in NM to forget about Vitality and focus on dexterity. Unfortunately at that point I had already spent 5 stat points on Vitality. Certainly nothing to restart a character over, but annoying. As my PI-solution I opted for Lightning Fury, simply because I had around 20 skillpoints to spare, but no free item slots for Amplify Damage.

Items
-Weapon switch 1: Windforce. What can I say? This character was built around this weapons massive damage output and that's pretty much all there is to the weapon. Knockback and mana leech are nice and all, but what really defines it is the damage. Granted, Heal Stamina 30% is nice with a base vitality build, since otherwise Stamina can get a little bothersome.
-Weapon Switch 2: Titan's Revenge & Spirit. The weapon switch was aimed for getting the highest amount of +skills to boost Lightning Fury damage to usable levels. One noteworthy thing is that with so much dex, you'll have 75% block with pretty much any shield. This is very nice with a Spirit.
-Head: Delirium Diadem. What Windforce is to the builds offensive side, Delirium is to the defense. The chance to cast Confusion is absolutely amazing with a skill like Strafe. Usually the first volley was enough to neutralize almost two screens worth of enemies. What really speaks for the safety it creates, is that the chance to turn into Stygian Doll triggered only twice during the entire Hell difficulty. I wasnt hit much, or at all. Beyond that the +2 skills, 10 vitality and 25% MF all worked nicely for the build.
-Armor: Fortitude Archon Plate. The armor both adds life and damage, both things this build craves for. With the low ED% on Strafe and Multishot, +300% was really a godsend, adding over a 1000 damage per arrow. It's no wonder this armor is considered as one of the best armors in the game. +100 life is also very, very nice on a build like this.
-Belt: Razortail. 15 to dex, 10 max damage and 33% pierce. More damage and 100% pierce on both bow and javelin. Simple but effective. I had no need for additional IAS or leech, so Nosferatu's wasnt used.
-Gloves: Laying of Hands. 20% IAS for breakpoints, 50% fire res and 350% ED agains demons. The latter really was very helpful in alot of cases. You could really feel the difference agains Demon-mobs.
-Boots: War Traveller. More Strenght for the Windforce and Spirit, more vitality for survivability and more damage for each arrow. Magic Find is nice too.
-Amulet: Highlords Wrath. 33% Deadly Strike translates to 33% more damage, while +1 kills helps with LF and 20% IAS used for a breakpoint. Simple but very effective item.
-Rings: Raven Frost and rare ring. Revenfrost adds AR and dexterity with Cannot Be Frozen, while the rare ring showed below gave more AR and Dex with resis and life leech.
-Charms: Gheeds. Various AR and resistance granting charms. With ID and TP tomes, inventory had 4x2 squares of free space.

Gameplay and finds
Easily the most fun character I have yet to play. Huge damage and speed made it possible for me to run nearly the entire game on players 8. The only execptions being Hell Andariel who was for some damned reason kicking my *** bad, Hell Ancients who I didnt even try to mess with and Hell Baal who I took down on players 3.

Merc, Valkyrie and Decoy tanked stuff, while I usually opened up a fight with 5-ish Lightning Furies followed by Strafe-cycles if inside or Multishot if outside. Tough singular enemies were usually left for the Merc cand Valk, while arrows and Confuse were used like bugspray agains the weaker enemies. Guided Arrow was the boss-killer if choice.

Nearly every mob was a complete pushover with such a high damage combined with Confuse. The notable execptions were Lightning immune unleechable archers, mainly Horror Archers, and Act 5 quest monsters with ranged attacks that pierce. Confuse wont do you muchgood when the Gloam trying to kills it's friend is still launching an occasional lightning bolt in your way. Lightning resist 80 helped alot, though. Large packs of undead with Greater Mummies could prove to be a chore, too.

There were some pretty good finds too, while nothing jaw-droppingly good.

What to say? Another instant classic build from Nightfish. I don't have a suitable bow for Melody, but Lycander's Aim was OK. The area I had the biggest problem was the River of Flame because of all the lightning immune Oblivion Knight Jrs. The Chaos Sanctuary itself was fairly easy though.

Not one of my more brilliant ideas, though she was about as powerful as a person like this could ever possibly be. That failure of a build was meant to the younger Vivio from the third series, while this new and drastically improved build went for an older Vivio (six years older than in that picture, though the exact number is *still* a mystery).

I unfortunately don't have any kind of a foundation to build upon at the moment, given that the fourth series is a few weeks away from being in print, but it's a reasonable guess that she will be a simple minded, full power, gunslinging girl with a comply or die mentality, just as her mother and godmother once were. If nothing else, she's has their knack for unknowingly putting the stability of the world / universe in jeopardy.

Comments
Lightning Fury and Charged Strike: The 45ish point investment was solid for general questing, but really started to slow down (especially Charged Strike) as the number of players increased. Some extra skills or synergies would have been nice, but I believe her problem is due more to her lack of -%ELR. A little more IAS for another LF breakpoint wouldn't hurt much either, I suppose.

Multiple Shot, Strafe, and Fire Arrow: Of these, Multiple Shot ended up being my favorite. I used to like Strafe, simply because of its speed, but Multiple Shot grew on me as I quested with Vivio. While both skills obviously have their individual situational advantages, I found Multiple Shot to be the greater of the two simply because of its LACK of automated aiming. As for Fire Arrow, it was relatively effective against Black Souls, as well as LIPI monsters. Was it worth the 20 points? Probably not, though the skill is certainly helpful. One thing to note, however, was that it was actually a passable killer with Fanaticism from dune's 'Beast' (and even better with Conviction from Tank) in a /players 8 MP game.

Decoy and Valkyrie: There's not much to say about the Decoy, but the Valkyrie surprised me with its ability to tank despite only a one point investment. It would occasionally perish before its cast timer ran out, but it was generally quite sturdy, and great relief for my mercenary.

Slow Missiles: This was a little more useful than I figured it might be, especially since it was generally a missile attack (or ten) that ruined things for my mercenary.

Eaglehorn: The ITD meant very little trouble hitting most of the things that needed to be killed by the bow switch, and the scaling AR was useful for everything else. Add on the fact that is has pretty decent damage, and you have yourself a winner. Outside of 'Faith', there's no other bow that I'd use for the job, though I may be a little biased by DotA. *buys more Eaglehorns*

Head Hunter's Glory: I'm uncertain as to whether or not this choice of shield will raise some eyebrows, but I figure it'd be best to explain it regardless. Since Vivio has 83 LR on her bow switch, any additional Perfect Diamonds from her shield would only result in stacked LR. 57 more LR would give her enough to cancel out Lower Resist, while 82 more would give her enough for Conviction. While I worry about Conviction Black Souls as much as the next person, I figured it wouldn't be worth using a crummy looking Monarch just for the rare case of seeing that bosspack. A more common case would be seeing Oblivion Knights and Black Souls in the Throne, but HHG would provide just enough (3 Perfect Diamonds convenient net you 57 LR) to cover for it, while looking significantly better and also giving Vivio additional FR/PR for using Charged Strike.

Questing: Normal was the toughest of the three difficulties. This might sound silly, but the first few levels were the only grueling portion of playing this character. Once Vivio hit level 18, however, it was very smooth sailing, courtesy of a few physical damage jewels and lightning damage charms. At 39, she equipped a 'Harmony' Matriarchal Bow, and sailed through all of Normal and Nightmare with little to no trouble at all. One thing I noticed, however, was that Lightning Fury was still ridiculously more powerful, despite the majority of my points being invested in bow skills. Things slowed down quite a bit in Hell, but there was little to no trouble to speak of. Vivio played through this portion of the game on /players 1, though she did a few Pit runs on higher settings to test out her power. By Act 4, the bow switch was really starting to slow down in terms of kill speed, but it was still enough to get the job done when necessary, thanks in large part to Decrepify.

Deaths/NDEs: I do believe Vivio died at least once while attempting to hide behind BobTheWarrior's Raven Claw wielding druid. As for NDEs, the majority of them came as a result of sheer stupidity and/or lack of familiarity with the skills and/or keybinding. Strafe versus Gloams while having minimal LR. Strafe versus Undead Stygian Dolls. The usual ridiculous failure, though nothing in comparison to this. :D.

Finds: Some pretty nice finds, many of which are listed below. The Fal was her Nightmare Hellforge drop, while the Io came from her final Hellforge, continuing my run of poor luck cracking forges in Hell. :(.

Future Plans
WSK/Baal runs for Vivio. Don't believe that her mercenary can handle the minions on very high players settings, so might just stick to /players 3 or even /players 1. :p.

6.2/7? I think the next character for this series will end the project at "7/7". The *actual* count is something like 11 total characters, and I'm kind of sick of working on this, as it's shamelessly promoting a less than stellar anime. :D.

The project aside, I want to make a few more amazons, as I haven't really explored the bow tree very deeply (though there's not much to see, I suppose). On the other hand, the nice Ribcracker kind of makes me want to try something melee. *shrug*
