Having recently done Barbarian who went all in with elemental damage, I now did it again, but with all the faster run and walk gear I could put on. This character was inspired by the Olympic games. I'll let someone else do the altius and fortius parts now, though :rolleyes:

That pair of crafted gloves was used before the Dracul's became available. I also used those for Diablo and Baal fights to have some crushing blow. Main weapons were the Crainte Vomirs, but also the switch with Lawbringer/Crescent Moon was used, especially in areas with a lot of undeads like Chaos Sanctuary.

Journey

Normal was twinked first with some envy jeweled stuff, and then some jewels of carnage filled items. The twist was that I used at first full Clegclaw's Brace set. And after the first act i double swinged with two of those swords. Those reached pretty high damage numbers with my charms and jewels.

From level 27 to 51 I used dual 'Honor' Dimensional Blades. Adding some basic melee gear before all the rest became available. FRW charms were added at their right levels, so I pretty much flied trough the NM.

That moment in the video is when I started Hell. Act 1 and 2 were played really recklessly running, as I felt that was what this character was about. From act 3 and LK, I started to take it little bit slower and killing more stuff on my way.

Alkor blocked me! Probably wanted to rob my jewelry for some fishy alchemy stuff... Like giving that golden bird was not enough!

I used some Taunt also. With Life Tap and the possibility of Decrepify, it was not really needed, but I had it at high levels anyway.

Travi was full of boss packs, and they made dealing with Councils a bit more interesting. Proper battle, I'd say.

The shortest act took me the longest. Simply because I wanted to kill some more. And boy there was lot to kill. Chaos was quite easy as I used the Lawbringer switch most of the time. I suffered my only death in the Outer Steppes, where I met too many souls. Could've been avoided, but meh. Getting all the FRW means my lightning resistance was little lower than I usually aim for.

Act 5 is much about the monster spawns. I was really lucky and didn't encounter almost anything dangerous. This little party at the beginning of the Glacial Trail was nice though. This character felt pretty fragile at times, but taking it little bit slower mostly took care of that feeling. When your backpack is full of tricks like teleport, life tap and decrepify, you can be safe with little bit patience. Running away from dangerous situations was also no problem. :cool:

Bosses were really easy in general. As were the Ancients and waves. Closest I was when the second wave almost had me to my surprise.


Last thoughts

Things I'm happy about:

- Using Crainte Vomirs probably for the first time
- Getting 1.07 Mavina's some use, too
- Playing Frenzy Barb since a long long time
- Women's 10.000 meters world record was broken while I was running around with Citius


Things I'm little bit concerned about:

- Without the handy tool box (Life Tap, Decrep, Teleport), I would've been in deep problems.
- Knowing that my solution to that could unfortunately have been increasing raw power in terms of more damaging weapons.

Well, glad this went this way.

Now someone go do it with proper circlet 2/30 instead of that lousy 1/20 of mine. Inventory full of 1.09 5FRW SCs and of course dual Zod bugged Eth 'Wind' Berserker Axes.

Seriously though, I'm pretty sure more ordinary Frenzier experiences almost the same feeling of speed running, because of the severe diminishing returns. Instead I want to encourage people to use some interesting weapon combos. Barbarian can have four different weapons, so there's space for many things to try :)

Finally my phase blade vitabarb has completed Hell dificulty. It's all thanks to a random monster in Act5 that dropped a 3-socket phase blade and voila - Crescent Moon. This char was not really untwinked, I got a 5-socket phase blade from Summoned from the SPF (which I no longer use btw but still many thanks for the help!), Saracen'c chance and Blackhorn's face from a friend. I also traded the Um rune with said friend. Who btw happens to be a lightning sorc - makes good party with that Crescent moon weapon.

I must say I actually soloed the Ancients and Baal without dying (and maybe will even be able to do Hell Baal runs), thus ending the argument about how viable is a no strength vitabarb once and for all. I hope :cool:

As this was the second character I started and first Barbarian some of the points were completely wasted. If I'd start over I'd concentrate on one weapon class instead of having both sword and axe masteries. Live and learn.
I used BC, BO and Shout constantly, they are very handy for a FrenzyBarb and if I'd started following the FrenzyBarb buildguide by Ash Housewares earlier I would've put more points into BO. I found Taunt to be very useful in handling the nasty gloams and other ranged monsters. Taunt a few of them to follow you away from the pack and kill them and before long you have the whole pack reduced to a fraction of it's original size.

Hulkster will start doing MF runs and my next project is to Pat my Fanatic Zealot, he's in Hell act I now.

Also had to TP out of the Throne due to the 4th wave spawning with fanaticism; howl + taunt were really useful there. Baal went down without much trouble, and dropped crap.

Most of the game was played at /p8, with the exception of the Tombs in Act 2, hence the high level at Patriarch. The damage that the skeletons did and the lack of life leech made it near impossible. Tombs were done on /p5 however. I had two deaths in WSK, both to Gloams. FHR was the killer there. Fortunately no OK's to deal with. Baal's minions were no problem, except for 2nd wave. I had no choice but to kill them at the bottom of the throne, and like someone mentioned in this thread, decrepify was the bane. All others I lured further away, and dispatched of them quickly. Unfortunately, I forgot to change the player settings, and Baal was killed on /p8 also. :rolleyes: Forgot to mention that Hell Ancients were done @ /p8 also. :shocked:

I don't remember what NM Hellforge was (something like Dol/Hel), but this is what Hell HF surprised me with. :rant: Here, Baal surprised me again (not really).

I'm not sure how this is going to turn out, but I copy and pasted DoH level2, because I thought it was absolutely enormous.

Briefish History
This definitely isn't my 1st pat, in fact this isn't even the first pat for this character, as with most of my "base" characters it is beyond its 3rd rebuild. However its now so very nearly done I may as well share it right?

Some of my characters are made without any real purpose other than "i wonder what if..", recently I just patted my swordguard/courpsemourn zealer, sorry no screens :( but I assure you he looked awesome. But the frenzier is like most of my "base" chars, excessively twinked, planned via OCD and built with a post-mat/pat purpose.

Questing
1.07 raven, self rushing, butchers.. stuff. Pretty much took as long as typing this topic will take but like I said earlier this guy is 4th edition, so yeah..

Scariest moment: almost put too much in STR
Toughest fight: yeah right xD

Best find: I think the 2nd edition char found a Ghostflame, however it turns out 0% mf, not so great for MFing.

Stats
Bit late on the Pat thread, so hes lvl 91 currently. However, due to the crazed rushspree that was my playthrough I think he was done at lvl 65, and everyone knows theres no point in characters below lvl 90 right? :wink2:

A pictures worth more than a thousand AR: LCS

Dex was left at base, and STR was raised to 98 before gear. The rest was plonked into vita, as you can tell by the life pool. I took a all-or-nothing approach and so the stats you see are with might/fana and bo/bc/shout AND demon limb enchant, without demon limb AR is 8-9k, which is fine for the pits. And of course, 5fpa IAS bp.

Took many months to acquire and I'm still short a Lo, but cry cry I must not, its still more than I ever hoped to find, and if you hadn't guessed it already I get more fun out of making the char then playing it :crazyeyes: .. well OK playing it is a blast too :>

Ring #2 - Rare Ring - 20str / 33 mana / 80ar / CR 24 / 3 ML, much needed mana leech with gg spare mods, my thanks to dune for this, and for putting up with my high standards.
Charms - 697 AR / 144 life / 95 max dmg / 3 dex / 15 FHR / 3 FRW / 14 GF / 15 psn dmg. Traded for a few of the Sharp lifers.

The old switcheroo consisted of +3 warcry glaives, for that oh-so-useful extra minute shout duration. Glaives of course look cool and fit within the dex requirements, however through ATMAFAIL I lost my frost nova one, so now I have 2 yellow glaives :doh: I also use a hel'd demon limb for enchant.

Merc - Shael'd Reapers / Shael'd Kiras /Eth Treachery AP (exactly 1000 def, please let me know if you too have a warm feeling when you see that in the readouts)

The basis for his gear was that his resists would be mega stacked with fade for wave 3 conviction trickery, CBF for wave 2 tomfoolery, and 60 FHR for wave 5 hangdaggery. Oh not to mention the last IAS bp for applying that blue curse for happy fun time. Suffice to say none of these things offset the onboard stupidity chip, but the overall outcome was acceptable.

This guy pretty much tears it up since I found that Ber rune in the pits. Honestly Beast vs ShaelShaelShaelShaelHel Zerker is no comparison, and its certainly nice to have leech coming out of both swings again.
Future plans? tidy up some of the Rolls on the gear, improve charms where I can.. (quite sure I'm one fine SC of balance away from a FHR bp) and of course MP baals aplenty.

I would also like to acknowledge Spankeh for the guide that inspired this char and thank him for his advice over pm's. Also a mention for neno, my trusty rival who picked swords and somehow frenzied his way to lv97 - its a long way to catch up buddy :D, make sure you keep out of my fanaticism aura range when we baal or I'll call the aurapolice.

Well, like I said, this guy is a Frenzy barb. I thought the best way to make him competitive with his Whirlwind brethren was to capitalize on CtC effects that would otherwise be unattainable for WW-users, and exploit a large amount of 1.07 damage charms. He's pretty standard for the most part, but he has an emphasis on offensive skills/stats/gear and he lives and breathes Static Field and Amplify Damage. And sleeps. He lives, breathes, and sleeps Static and Amp. Believe it.

First things first then. What are his skills?

Because I wanted an emphasis on Amplify Damage, not the standard run-of-the-mill Reaper's Toll Decrepify.

Why 300 strength and relatively skimpy vitality?
For PvM, I like to get characters to the point of sustainability (it varies on the character, but usually around ~2K hit points on shieldless melee chars, give or take a few hundred) and then focus on the damage aspect to increase the kill speed. Plus, 300 looked cool; it's not completely titan-esque, but it's a "Fortitude" equivalent.

How was the leveling?
Not too bad for the first portion of his journey. By the end of Normal, I was rolling with a Ribby + Bash, and experimenting with some Bloodletters to rock the +Whirlwind, but things picked up when I quit screwing around and finally decided to use Frenzy 100% of the time. I could equip all of those cool .07 dmg charms around lvl 40, so I was still in Normal when I got the obscene damage boost.

For a mace barb, however, I found that there aren't many cool 1-hand options in the early and midgame stages. The "flesh" the Fleshrender refers to, is obviously the skin of an apple, and if this trip through the game was representative of Aldur's Rhythm, I believe we can assume that Aldur lived a life constantly plagued with inner ear infections and epilepsy.

My charms made the /p8 trip bearable, but only just. I finally made it into Hell with a Baranar's Star and a Demon Limb and let's just say that those weapons were made entirely of puppy farts and cotton candy in comparison to his end game face-breakers.

Any epic finds along the way?
Nothing epic, although some notables include: Oculus, Jalal's Mane, Ko rune, Bonehew, 5os 269% ED Runemaster, Sandstorm Trek, 32%ED/+7 max dmg jewel, and BK Sacred Charge. HF: NM, Hell

Any thoughts you'd like to leave us with?

-Taunt comes in handy every now and again. I'd use it more, but I like Frenzy on right click and if I wanted a lot of hotkeys I'd be playing an Assassin.
-Nobody wanted to trade away a Stormlash to me, so this guy sat around waiting patiently for weeks until finally my good bud cloudy broke down and caved to my pleas. Lesson learned though: I will never build another character in which I do not have all the end game gear before I begin.
-This guy is a freight train, but solo /p8 Lister and company are terrible on him. If I were to outfit a similar guy for Baal running, I probably wouldn't neglect War Cry, or at least utilize a safer, Holy Freeze/Reaper's merc to help deal with that. Maybe toss on a Drac's to up the safety factor as well. Aside from that, I liked the focus on damage output.
-Every time I wanted to buy some Act 2 scrolls and what not, Drognan would get all up in my grill. He'd never raise a hand to me, but I could definitely feel him drilling me with the stink eye every time I turned around.
-I should probably slow down on the Pat threads. I don't want to singe your eyebrows with the overload of awesome I'm throwing around on the web. Plus, sleeping is gg. Nah, I've got one or two more in the works (but I keep putting off finishing my epic PvP project of death because I'm scared I'll have nothing to strive for once I've finished). I guess we'll see.

I'm currently undecided between pumping double swing for the synergy to frenzy and pumping BO for more life. More damage is always good, and the only time I remember wishing I had more life was when I died to the ancients to save a rejuvie (with amp on me) and fighting lister. then again, more damage = more leech. I had 19LL from gear, then another 8 or 2 depending on the axe.

With his current gear he overshoots the 5 frame frenzy by 15 ias.

I think my plan is to better my merc's gear and see how he is at running hell baal. Right now I'd hate to have to shelve this character. I would like to replace his weapons with something thats cheaper to repair, his left weapon with the 60ias costs just more than 1500 gold per dura point to repair, and I had to outfit my shelved summoner with goldfind gear to keep him running. Act 4 cost 200k, Act 5 was closer to 6-800k

Made my 3rd Mat/Pat now since I started playing again. This time it was a frenzy barb named Bjorn. Since melee characters aren't my strong side he had some problems in Act5 Hell. All in all, he was great fun to play. Most of the fun where of course in Normal and Nightmare since by Nightmare I had my end gear equipped so Hell became quite repetive but due to mp with DX it was done in a quick short time.

Never had any problems with monsters since I used Demon Limb and Baranar's Star on switch. Yes, I used the Enchant on DL for AR :D Got around 7K ar which worked ok. Could have gone with more but nah.

I had a blast with this guy. I played Hell through on /p4-8, depending on the situation. I didn't have any trouble with any of the act bosses; I really lucked out on the Ancients and didn't have to reroll them. I did 'em on /p4 because I forgot to change it but I didn't have to take a potion. BK's life leach is 24% or something like that. I had one death in Normal, can't remember where, and none after that. I would like to take him to lvl99, though it take me a few years. I may make him a MFer of some sort and give him both of my Ali Babas for fun. Notable finds were Nature's Peace, String of Ears, Duriel's Shell, BK's Tribal Guardian, Headstriker, and Naj's Light Plate, all of which stayed on him.

About the character:

I needed a build for my awesome 1.07 indestructible bugged Kingslayer Cryptic Sword and I decided to make Frenzybarb. But what other weapon? Well, it needs to be sword, actually a Cryptic one, so not much option. Spent my last Mal to eth Oath Cryptic Sword I had in my stashes. Happily got a Mal from hellforge, so no loss there 😃

First skill I maxed was Bo, then Sword Mastery. So my Frenzy skill was at level1 till I got to level 49 or 54, can't recall, but somewhere between those levels. I wanted to it like that, because he was way too strong in normal and nm, so I figured out that after I've maxed BO and SM and put points to one-point wonders, all the rest of the skillpoints goes to Frenzy and it's synergies. So, this build is done at lvl99 😁

Physical Immunes and Vengeange lvl3, worked quite nice but slow. The most annoying ones were those Ghosts who drain your mana. As every monster didn't notice my merc at all in Hell, I had to drink a lot of mana pots while fighting against those ghosts or mana burning PI's. But it was capable subtitute for Berserk.

He is very strong and I breezed through the game quite quickly. Actually, I started this character on Sunday afternoon and now I patted him. Well, all of his gear was on him at lvl65, so everything after that was very easy. Thanks to +5max light res from Fortitude, Gloams were piece of cake.

Grohl is my first character that used Fortitude to complete the game. For future plans, I might level him some, at least to max that Taunt and after that he will retire. I toyed in my head, that if I ever get my hands on Grief, I might try to make Grohl slightly higher level. No, not near 99, but a bit close, 90 sounds good. If I ever make 99er, it will be furywolf :laugh:

It was fully p8 single player only experience, and it took lot less time than I thought it would take. I didn't play this game for a long time and recently came back and met this great community plus I never had more fun than with this frenzier... what a come back I'd say! :) Well, nothing much to say about this character except I'd like to thank lads from #rtb irc channel (JC, Justa, Corrupted, Naab, jjscud, Aman, leets, Seraphim etc... sorry if I forgot someone) for all the tips about nowadays d2 version etc. I've also been a bit lucky with items, runes in particular, so I got my Lo in only 215 runs for Fortitude etc.

A side note: I chose swords over axes simply 'cos they look lot more cool etc... eventho I never played this with axes, which do slightly better dmg... I would never choose anything beside lawbringer sword... it made so much difference with big decrepify lvl affecting everyone around making p8 going almost like a breeze. I know there's an alternate route with Tomby but it has lvl 1 decrepify and after playing this I simply couldn't rely on my merc for that spell. Since I boosted my attributes pretty much with charms that have second mod also, I might go for another Lo rune and make Grief/Lawb in Phase Blades that I already got as bases... we'll see. Cya all. ;)

Finished New Years Day, 2014.

I'll start by mentioning that this is my first untwinked Patriarch and my only Pat that isn't a Fishymancer. It is also my first Pat since I rejoined the SP and D2 community in November.

This Barb was serious fun to play. The challenge of playing untwinked in tandem with the rarely occurring yet game changing drops reminded me much of gambling (a personal love of mine). There were points where I would be nearly unable to proceed and would have to hit the drawing board, craft some gear, do some runs, or just straight suck it up and press on at painfully slow speeds, then I would hit a good drop and it would reenergize me to press forward.

Let's break down the barb. Keep in mind, the figures below reflect the one stat/skill reset I took midway through Hell Difficulty to ease some of the difficulties I was having. I adapted my stats and skills to the gear I found and used to finish. Also bear in mind that I saved my imbues/socket quests for later in case I decide to continue pushing this untwinked toon to greater heights.

I relied on blood crafting for most of the game. Notable drops include the crown of thieves, the death cleaver, and the string of ears. Each of these drops happened at critical points in the game when it seemed like pressing forward was nigh impossible. I also made liberal use of the socketing recipes for white drops that I found. I relied heavily on the Honor and Passion runewords to give me decent damage output. When the Bonehew dropped for my merc in A3 Hell it couldn't have come at a better time. This gave me the ability to simply stun the enemies I faced with War Cry and allow my merc to do most of the killing.

This Death Cleaver was a gift from the heavens and dropped in River of Flame Hell. It sped things up considerably for me.

I was essentially forced to use this piece because it was the only Cannot Be Frozen item I found. I tried to run nightmare Andy for a few evenings to find a Ravenfrost but I eventually decided to press forward.

I picked Fazel up the moment I hit A2 nightmare. We worked our way slowly but painfully through the rest of the game together. I believe Fazel's number one nemesis is NM/Hell Andariel. I would try to run her for drops and Fazel would die over and over to her poisons quicker than I could shift+click a full rejuv on him. The hydras from Hell High Council also gave him some trouble. Other than that Fazel was my steadfast companion throughout the game and should be recognized with full honors in our campaign against the minions of hell.

Order of business (starting in nightmare) went like this: Taunt towards the edge of the screen, draw in enemies and war cry then start frenzying. Use war cry, taunt, and howl, to generally manipulate the enemies into doing what I need them to do to die the quickest. Spam heal pots, keep full purps in reserve. After my merc's Bonehew dropped I was mainly a singer, keeping the enemies stunned and letting my merc do the work.

Mana burn enemies were annoying because if I let the War Cry stun timer lapse they would drop my mana bar and I would usually have to back out and double swing to mana leech until I could re-stun them. I kept my resists high through charms and gear so FE/LE weren't that big of a deal. I put a lot of emphasis on life leech to help offset the potions (this helped a lot with the ancients).

Attack rating was also a constant consideration. Eventually the whiffing sound became a constant nagging reminder of failure in my headset/ears. Almost all of my charms add some AR + whatever other useful stat.

Hrrrrrrrgh was a challenge to complete but he still moved at a decent pace. I will say that I wouldn't want to attempt doing this kind of character in a single pass/hardcore capacity as I did have quite a few deaths (atleast 20). Many deaths were due to mindless rushing at tedious points I grew tired of, so I won't say it absolutely can't be done. If I could make one remark about playing untwinked it is that you need some skill, a little luck, and a decent amount of adult beverages to help you keep your patience.

THE PLAYING:

I started this char because FE wanted to play SC, and I wanted to play with him(and I was playing HC). I had zipped away all my SC stashes when I started playing, so this guy was untwinked for the first levels. When this guy was level 25, I brought my stashes back, because I wanted to respec some of my old chars and test a build I had in mind. When that turned out to be crap, I came back to this guy.

I twinked him out with coldsteel eye(best sword ever!) and full angelic set(after I leveled him to 31 with a couple of Ripsaws), and finished act5 normal in MP with Fast Eddie. We got to catacombs in nightmare, which was where this char saw his destiny - dual crescent moon phase blades with Infinity merc.

Let me elaborate here: When you have 2 crescent moon's equipped, your character has -70% elr. Static field is lightning damage, so elr% and conviction makes it more effective. IIRC, if Conviction takes a monsters resistance below 0, it doesn't make static field more effective. It can only remove a monster resistance to static. However elr% can make static field more than 100% effective. Combine the two and you win!

So the plan to use this setup gave me lots of motivation to play, and increased the fun of running from bosspack to bosspack knocking their heads over conisderably. I was using Lawbringer superior legend sword and Crainte Vomir from 44 to 54, when I was able to equip Cescent Moon phaseblades. Both the Lawbringer and the Crescent moon setups were very effective in players 8 NM, and the monsters weren't strong enough to pose a threat.

Towards the end of nightmare I combined Crescent Moons on most monsters with Lawbringer/Oath(I changed Crainte Vomir for Oath Champion sword at 57, in act3 NM). I used the Lawbringer switch on more dangerous monsters with required me to leech to not die, and nastier undead. We MPed quite a bit with Fast Eddie in various parts of NM and Normal. I can't remember which parts for sure, but when I was playing by myself, I ran through the acts at crazy speed. I wasn't using Infinity in NM (I don't remember to have used it anyway), because I didn't have time to mule it on :D

As I said, I flew through NM. It was so fast I barely remember anything. Well, fast for me, because it usually takes me weeks to make progress. I play a char abit, then park them, then play the a few weeks later. Playing this guy was very unusual. I was having a rush in my brain while playing him.

So I killed NM Lister, then Baal.

I got to hell. I muled on some heavy ordinance. The endgame sword(Death) and Infinity. I died in the dark wood in hell though, because curse+aura enchanted. At that point I knew that for hell I would need:

a) better equipment
b) tactics.

I mped with FE abit more, we was in act2 hell with his fishymancer at that point, and helped me get there aswell. From there on I was in a rush again. We found the staff in the MP game with FE. When I was looking for the Viper amulet, I found a legend sword. I quickly took it to Larzuk, go 3 sockets, and made myself a new(and faster) lawbringer. That let me switch out my Skullder's Ire with the Ias jewel, and equip Fortitude. I also got a few strengh charms, so I wouldn't need to strenght from my gloves, and equipped Laying Of Hands. I had acomplished a) at that point, I improved my equipment. And it felt. My health bulb wouldn't budge unless I was fighting real nasty monsters, or rather nasty unleechables. And even then, it budged, but it didn't run out. Mostly thanks to my superior tactics. When I saw that a monster pack made my health go down, I'd howl, and kill the boss of the oack. Problem solved. No further tactics were neccesary.

Acts 3,4 and 5 flew by really fast. I got from the end of act2 to the end of the game in about 3 hours. However, I skipped lots of monsters, because I hated standing still. I killed the quest monsters, and any bosspacks that got in my way, but I only hit the normal monsters enough to keep frenzy charged up. I had to kill abit more monstesr in the Frozen River, since those witches nearly got me a few times. It is tough in there with no shield. They do craploads of damage. However, I chased them down and showed no mercy. Throughout the rest act5 I didn't even bother with the bosspacks(except pindle and bonesaw breaker. I felt a strange compulsion to destroy those two.). I didn't bother, because I wanted to test my indestructible metal(mettle?) againts Lister and Baal.

Well, lister got me once, since he was Fanatic, and I was Fanatically reckless. And howl doesn't work on him.:scratchchin:

But on the second try I sliced him up good. The I went into the worldstone chamber, and chopped Baals tentacles off. Two by three or four.

To recap abit, undead were no problem because of the lawbringer, demons melted to laying of hands. Animal just took a second longer to die. This is the most powerful char I have ever built, and was awesome to play. Maybe he couldn't kill as fast as a lightning zon with infinity and all that, but that hasn't been proven yet. And he could stand his ground with nearly every monster, and certainly every monster that he met in his journey.

The entire game was played on players 8.

This character is very funny to play compare to my last char.https://www.purediablo.com/forums/threads/matriarch-patriarch-guardian-archive-thread.50/post-2655. He was fast and brutal.
Of course i had to many death , maybe 100 ! and i know that he is not a very strong character. I use him to run hell countess for 100 times and i will use him to take part in baalthon .

Please if you see any weak points in my character or you want to suggest something to became better post your opinion.

Next: After i finish baal run i will continue my project , maybe simoultaneously all remaining characters

Let me start by saying this is my second mat/pat, and he was quite fun to play. Wall of text to follow....

Background
After matting my blizzballer, I wanted my next mat/pat to be melee-oriented (and better equipped!). Meanwhile, my luckiest finds from running Meph are a pair of Azurewraths--both of them found in under 350 runs. I felt almost obligated to make a character who could play with my new toys, so Hazmat the Frenzy Barb was born.

The Build (at level 85):
20/24 Shout

10/14 Sword Mastery
16/20 Double Swing

1 point in Taunt, Natural Res, Iron Skin, Berserk, Battle Command, and prereqs. Future points will go toward maxing Double Swing and then raising either Sword Mastery or Taunt.

I figured 20 Frenzy and 20 BO were pretty much a given for a Frenzy Barb, so after that the main decisions were whether or not to max Shout and how to split points between Sword Mastery, Double Swing, and Taunt. I chose to max shout, since this is only my second character through Hell and the first one died A LOT. ;) Plus I figured Frenzy would do enough damage even without maxing both synergies, and I was right. I chose to split points between SM (smaller damage bonus but AR boost and small critical strike chance) and DS (bigger damage bonus as frenzy synergy, and very valuable as a backup attack against mana burns and PIs (all the weapons I used in Hell had large non-physical damage components, so I used DS instead of Berserk against most PIs)). I didn't think Taunt would be as useful to put points into, because I only used it for occasional "pulling", for which 1pt sufficed. Since it only works against the normal monsters that are easy to kill anyway, I didn't see much value in raising taunt for the -defense -damage.

I'm pleased with the result of the above decisions, though I'll note that high damage + life leech was probably the single most important factor in staying alive, so I do wonder how it would have turned out if I had ignored Shout and put those 20 points into more Frenzy carnage. A project for another time, perhaps.

Kinda pathetic using those sockets on Orts, but entering Hell Lightning was my only resist that was lacking and I couldn't find a better spot to fit it in. I'll resocket them with something more useful when I get more/better resist charms. I'm not thrilled with Duriel's Shell, but again I needed the resists and most unique armors suck anyway. Perhaps an upgraded and Um'd Shaftstop, or Duress, might make a suitable replacement later on. If I ever find a Lo, of course, Fortitude is a no-brainer.

Aside from those two issues, I'm very happy with Hazmat's gear. 28% DR, 31% LL, and I did manage to get 75 in all resists. I like the LoH + Azurewrath combo--350% damage to demons from LoH is great, and sanct aura from Azurewrath completely castrates undead. The knockback effect keeps them from swarming me and often interrupts ranged attackers, and all those stoneskinned PI undead uniques that were very slow and tedious to kill before are now about as easy/quick to kill as devilkin.

For the switch weapons, Demon Limb was used for the Enchant and Blackbog's Sharp was there for the 50% slow. I abused 50% slow weapons against bosses and Ancients throughout the game (except for a period of time between finding Kelpie Snare, and merc reaching level 75 for Reaper's). 50% slow, especially combined with decrep from Reaper's, makes bosses and Ancients about as scary as sleepy kittens.

Baranar's Star and Nord's Tenderizer deserve special mention as my beat-stick duo of choice in Hell until level 85.

Some LCS numbers (shamelessly inflated by BC/Shout/BO, Enchant from Demon Limb, and Might from merc):

General thoughts/notes on the experience:

Hazmat was the beneficiary of all the goodies my blizzballer has gotten from Meph runs. With a nice selection of unique weapons to choose from, I kept him on p8 throughout Normal and Nightmare (including bosses and Ancients). He killed so fast that there were times when I checked the Messages screen because I thought maybe I'd forgotten to switch to p8. BTW, I really like Double Swing--my least favorite phase of the game is the levels before I get my big "kill lots of stuff fast" skill, but DS kills pretty fast in its own right, is available at level 6, and is well worth putting points into as a synergy for Frenzy. And of course, with 9+ points in it, it's a great mana-free way to keep slicing and dicing when mana burned.

Things didn't get too much harder in Hell, though I did drop to p1--I'm sure Hazmat could have handled a slightly higher players setting, but I don't think the tedium is worth it in Hell unless you're specifically running a relatively safe area for experience (which I did do after Act IV so that I could wield the Azurewraths for Act V). Chaos Sanctuary was a pain, of course; I didn't like exclusively relying on Berserk because of the 0 Defense while lacking War Cry, along with lack of life/mana leech. Instead, I mainly pulled the DKs away from OKs (since the DKs seem to follow further than the OKs) and killed them first, then dealt with the OKs. If they were clumped together I just frenzied, since they don't cast IM in melee range. If they were split up then I used Berserk.

All the things that my sorc still has nightmares about were easy with Hazmat. Against the Ancients, I just tapped each of them with Blackbog's (followed up by decrep from merc), switched back to Azurewraths, and frenzied them like they were any other random monster. They died quickly. Words cannot express the difference between that and the experience I had killing them with my sorc. Same thing with Baal--just tapped him with Blackbog's and frenzied him--no teleporting or "hey look there's my twin" shenanigans. I did have one major difficulty which completely took me by surprise--Tomb Vipers in Nihlathak's temple. I don't know if their poison damage is bugged or intentional, but I do know that at a time when I could frenzy my way into the center of boss packs with life leech keeping my hp full, I could spot 2 or 3 regular non-unique tomb vipers and be dead 2 seconds later.

Skin of Vipermagi--dropped from a unique claw viper in NM claw viper temple, appropriately enough.

Homunculus (Hell Meph quest kill)

Hazmat's Retirement Plan:
Well, the primary goal with Hazmat was to enjoy all the goodies I've gotten so far from Meph runs, particularly the golden phase blades. However, as Meph is having more and more trouble giving me presents that I don't already have, I'm starting to look toward WSK+Baal as my next MF'ing target. Pindle's easier, of course, but I'm not sure whether or not I can endure the monotony of thousands of Pindle runs, nor the disappointment of going hundreds of consecutive runs without finding anything interesting. I'm hoping WSK/Baal runs will be more exciting, and I was hoping Hazmat might be my first competent WSK/Baal runner.

If his first run through WSK and Baal is any indication, he will handle the task just fine. The hard part will be MF gear. I'd be happy with about 200% base MF, with an Ali Baba (or two, depending on how much rougher Baal is without the %50 slow) on switch for Baal's death. I'm thinking, when I find more shimmering charms to cover the resists, I can switch out Duriel's Shell for a ptopaz'd Skullder's. That's the biggest chunk of MF I can get in one piece of equipment, and doesn't require giving up any leech or damage. That and Gheed's (mine is 40%--lucky first Gheed's, eh?) should be a good start, and if I ever find War Travs it will push me over 200%.

I'm open to suggestions! :)

Other Characters on my To Do list:
Tesladin--he's whipping up NM right now with ease, but for maximum fun I'm holding off on levelling him past 54 until I get an Um rune for Crescent Moon.
CL/Orb sorc--the need for mid-level runes for upgrading uniques and making more obtainable runewords, combined with the fact that I now have the gear to hit the 117% FCR breakpoint, means it's time to start up a CL/Orb Countess-runner soon.
WW Barb--I started one with the idea of grooming him for a Bonehew or (if/when I find one) Tomb Reaver. However, Meph gave me a Ribcracker and I'm thinking I'd have a blast with a 100% CB (Ribby+Guillame's+Gore Rider) Ribcracker whirler! I just need to find a way to fit in some mana leech, since I'll be losing Vamp Gaze to use Guillame's.
Fanatic Zealot--I'd like to make another build to play with one of the Azurewrath's at some point, and this seems like a good candidate.

I mentioned yesterday that I finally reached my goal of Patting a character untwinked in 1.09 SP, but I didn't have the stats to do a proper introduction.

For those who wonder why I bother with a 1.09 Pat, I had an old grudge with the Hell Ancients that doled out non-stop pwnage to my original Pally back in 2003 and wanted to settle it with the next character I was working on at the time, a Frenzy barb, but I foolishly installed 1.10 at that time and rendered my characters non-viable. So, after a 6 or so year break, I decided to try again, and I searched for a Pat build for a 1.09 SP Frenzy Barb but did not find one, so maybe this will be useful for anybody else who, for some reason (HF Rushing, MF, or just settling an old grudge with the Hell Ancients like I did) want to beat the game in 1.09 SP.

Since this was my first character upon my return, I made many early n00b errors that might also be useful to point out and discuss.

As such, I present to you:

Being a first Pat, and my first character in a long time, mistakes were made (especially early), but they were thankfully not fatal errors (the lack of synergies make 1.09 builds a little more flexible), and actually came in handy as fate (or the Diablo gods) kept throwing curve balls at me.

I struggled with poor gear early (gemmed swords and the like) so that’s not worth sharing, but the game got MUCH easier once I got the following setups (only notable items mentioned):

Late NM:
Armor: “Smoke” Russet Armor (thanks to Lum from NM HF: +50% AR and nice bump on defense - this was my END GAME armor – never got another Lum)

Frenzy Weapons: Dual “King’s Grace” runeword Tusk Swords (not by design – any good 3-socket sword would do, but I happened to have 2 3-socket Tusk Swords drop). These made NM Ancients and Baal + Minions VERY beatable. I learned the value of life leech. Not quite up to Hell, though.

Weapon Switch: Rare Tulwar with +1 Barb Skills and Sigon’s Guard shield (for high chance to block and +1 skills)

Ammy: +1 Barb Masteries Rare Ammy

Progression
My progression was stop and go (much difficulty with NM Duriel and Diablo) until I got my dual “King’s Grace” Tusk Swords – that made NM Act V much easier. I then struggled with damage output in Hell, so I ran NM Mephisto until he dropped me the Earthshaker and I finally gave up on my search for a socketable Zweihander and settled for having Larzuk socket the Superior Knout so I could runeword it for “Honor” – that setup enabled me to go through much of Hell.

I also found that my experiments in Hell Act I of having the weapon switch from Frenzy be a one-hand weapon and high-block shield for Berzerk didn’t work as well as I had hoped. I went through my stash and found The Minotaur (which I initially ignored because I didn’t consider 2H weapons) - I found that some points in Concentrate with the Mino on weapon switch was a Boss killer – I had a much easier time with Hell Duriel and Diablo than NM because of the Mino + LoH – alternating between Concentrate with the Mino to slow target, then Frenzy to increase MY attack worked the best. I also found that Frenzy on right click with Berzerk on left click was the most effective against PI’s (the Earthshaker with Berzerk worked mighty nice).

I also learned to use my war cries going though Hell – I started investing more in BO and would case Battle Command, Shout, and BO before battles – that helped my survivability tremendously. My end-game level skills were all into BO.

I hit the same brick wall that I had hit back in the day at Hell Ancients (at about lvl 76) – I went through my stash of Full Rejuvs in my first series of tries (with ES + Honor Knout) and then decided to mine Mephisto (leaping the moat so I ONLY have to take on Meph).

I was looking for Baranar’s Star, Dangoon’s Teaching, a Lightsabre, and daydreaming of a Doombringer, but did not expect the green Jagged Star. I was going for maximum speed + LL/ML, so Aldur’s Rhythm was an unexpected treat. Not truly “elite”, but when combined with the LL/ML of my belt and rings and the OW/CB of the Fleshrender, it turned out to be up to the task of beating the Ancients and REALLY handles any non-PI monsters - I can stand in the middle of a pack of Hell cows and hack away, and bosses go down fast – only PI’s bug me, but I can survive until I clear out the pack to take on the PI mano-e-mano and Berzerk it.

I also worked on leveling, as it was explained that going at them under-leveled made it MUCH harder.

LL was not incredibly useful for the Ancients that I could tell, but I watched some YouTube Hell Ancient battles, and that helped me keep my head to fight smarter. I decided to tank the leaper first, then the WW guy, and finally the thrower. I had 2 bad spawns, but was quick on the TP to reset them, and the third spawn I saw I was surviving to tank the leaper – then the WW. By then my Merc was done and I saw the Thrower had spawned PI – but it was just me and him, so I went after him with Berzerk – he STILL HURT A LOT – his axes were landing in my recovery period. Glad I spread out some purple pots! My hits were doing good damage though, so I was able to last him out.

Hell Baal’s minions were no problem except Lister, who spawned PI, so he was a little tricky, took some hit and run, but nothing I hadn’t dealt with before. Baal himself went down VERY fast and easy – very anticlimatic – the key battle was the Ancients.

A note on Masteries – I was foolish in early Masteries skill distribution, putting points in the mastery of the weapon I was using at the time. I did not realize how precious each point would be late-game. So points were put into sword, axe, and mace as I found alternating weapons that were better than what I was using. HOWEVER, this turned out to have a silver lining, as I could not find a socketable Zweihander for “Honor” (I used swords - gem-socketed - from the end of Normal to late NM, so I wanted to stick with that since I had invested heavily in Sword Mastery), I saw I had several Knouts – so those Mace points came in handy. Then, when I realized what a Boss-killer The Minotaur could be, I felt better about the axe masteries. As it turned out, the squandered points were in Swords, not Maces and Axes – as you will notice that my Hell gear includes nary a sword. If you go untwinked, you don’t know what weapons the game will give you for NM and Hell questing, so I would suggest SAVING points you plan for masteries until that’s established – put one into each for the CS and initial damage/AR bonus, but save points for when you get a really usably weapon.

Runes (other than minable runes from Countess which can make King’s Grace and Honor runewords and a lucky NM HF Lum to make Smoke Armor) were not a huge part of this game.

Notables:
- I played on /players8 the entire game, until the Crystaline Passage in Hell. It didn't make anything significantly more dangerous, it just made everything a lot slower. I didn't do full clears, but I did kill every monster I encounted.
- 0 MF throughout: Bonehew (Baal, Hell), Fungal GC (Great Marsh, Hell), Io/Io from Hellforge
- 1 death, a LI/PI mana-burn, cursed Mauler pack in the Durance of Hate (+3 Mauler Champions in the group too). They put me in hit recovery and I couldn't escape. Quite a few NDE's though, but zero 'save & exit's.
- I think my mercs parents were related; he was painfully stupid this time
- Taunt is probably one of the most underrated skills in the game; with enough patience you can chip away at any dangerous pack of monsters. For example, I was able to escape this in the Chaos Sanctuary in Hell, using Leap Attack to get away and then drawing every minion away with Taunt (1-3 minions each time). The whole process for that group took 3 Full Rejuv's and about 45 minutes. I felt somewhat guilty pausing the game to take the screenie, but at least I didn't save and exit - or die.

As for what's next, I have no idea.
