Very easy char to play (i missed the good old ww times). Everything went down with players 8 on. Not even the ancients had a chance. No rerols (no nasty auras either), only death i can remember was from IM while carelessly WWing in the CS.

Comments:
Trojan was the 2nd barb I've played so far and the first barb and melee-character I've patted. The other barb (my first character ever in D2) was too screwed to be patted (no points in warcries whatsoever). Anyway, Trojan was a fun character! Boring until level 30, but WW takes care of everything till end of Nightmare. In Hell, a mixture of Concentrate and Berserk was needed. The warcries was quite a chore to maintain tho, this being the first time I'm playing a barb with proper warcries. At times I found myself confidently taking a large mob, only to retreat coz I forgot to refresh the warcries.
That said, IMO no barbarians can survive without warcries, be it those that give you tanking advantages or mob-control abilities.
I find him very versatile MF-wise, being able to run both single targets (like Mephisto) and area targets (like Pits) with equal efficiency. Somewhat of a Jack-of-all-Trades. Not to mention the uber Find Item skill which so far haven't gave me anything really good yet, but I'm sure it will :wink2:
The two targets he can't run obviously is the Countess Tower and CS.

Number of deaths: 2 (one against a Extra Fast,Extra Strong boss mob of PI spirits in Tower, another was IM in WSK3)
NM HF: Fal (I think)

History: Originally proud wielder of the inspired name "rushed1". I decided that I wanted a Pindle/Pits/etc whirler, and made the Oath swords from 1.07 ethereal bases. I started leveling him the hard way, killing Pindle mostly. Eventually, he started being capable of dealing with P8 Hell quite decently, and did a good number of Pit runs as such, generally with merc along for Decrepify. I also farmed ~2.5M gold with him for countless mercenary ressurects. Getting to 85 proved to be a pain. I decided to finally do the Ancients Quest on Hell, which was a pushover. I thought "what the hell" and went on to deal with Baal, with surprising ease.

Now 22k EXP from level 85, I'm hoping to take down NM Ancients and get the last way to 85 and equip Gladiator's or Skullder's.

Notable finds: Pul and Ist from Hell Countess, 5os Eth Zerkaxe, Graverobber GC, Bartuc's Cutthroat.

Introducing Hopnut the whirly-barb! A couple of points to explain here...

The name: Hopnut was named by my daughter. She got a kick out of watching my last barb (a Frenzy barb on BNET) use the Leap skill to escape dire situations, so when I made a new barb, she suggested the name Hopnut. And of course I'm a pushover where she's concerned. :)

Pseudo-IK: I wanted him to be an IK barb. I have a dozen of every IK item except the armor. My intent was to play him to about act 4 of hell, and then wait until my MF endeavors cooked up a Soul Cage. Alas, this never occurred, and eventually my daughter bugged me enough to finish the game with him that I relented. He finished the game wearing all the IK pieces minus the armor, with Duress sacred armor in it's place. Not a bad substitute, I must say.

Might Merc wearing eth Rockstopper, Duriels and Hone Sundan (Shael, Shael, Amn). I gave him a Reaper's for WSK/Throne and a Kelpie for Baal.

Gameplay

Normal - Standard twinked melee career, Sigons, etc. Nothing of note happened in normal.

Nightmare - I tried out all sorts of gear on him, stuff I had never thought about using before, such as Black Hades armor socketed with damage jewels. Bloodtree Stump was his head-bonker of choice for a long time. Ran Baal until around level 74 or so.

Hell - Once he could equip IK Maul I threw on all the IK stuff I had and made a Duress in a sacred armor. As is the norm for a melee character the Chaos Sanctuary was a white-knuckle ride. I had to take off his Saracen's Chance amulet as the IM procing made my nerves go ballistic. WSK was also a tough journey, as I got some truly nasty spawns in there with plenty of cursed/mana burn/PI/stone skin/fanatacism/etc packs all mixing it up. NDEs were a common occurrence.
I am of the opinion that Baal's quest drop has LOWER odds of dropping anything decent.

A few deaths... one in WSK in Nightmare. One in Act 3 hell, a stair-trap in one of the Ruined Temple type places. One in the Frozen River in hell was a result of amp+mana burn+fanatic aura pack with me in stun-lock from a huge mob of those Blood Witch type critters. Ugh. Body retrieval was not fun and took a LONG time.

Notable finds: Guillame's Face, Mal rune

All in all he was fun to play, but reinforced my preference for caster/ranged type characters. For now he's going to be parked until the day I find an IKSC, at which point I'll go clear out WSK/Throne/Baal one more time just to say I did it.

I'm kind of bummed that I used my only ED/IAS jewel on this guy, as he'll likely not get played much.

1. Patriarch Malik - Frenzied Zealbarb

I always wanted to make a barb with two 2H swords, but couldn't quite figure which build to go for. I thought of dual grief zweihanders for WW barb but it seemed kind of a stretch cause I already have two good roll grief pbs. Then I read maarek's thread for his frenzied zealbarb and decided this was what I was going to make. Zeal ftw?

He is named after a character in Prince of Persia:Forgotten Sands. Actually Malik in PoPFS doesn't dual wield though, he uses a giant two handed sword. But he occasionally wields it in one hand so that's that..

Well.. He zeals. Actually, charge up frenzy first on the LMB and then zeal on RMB. It's clumsy and quite often it's not fully charged and charges are lost quickly. Hell was started on p8 but toned down to p5 and later p3. His damage isn't very good actually. Well not bad, but compared to a fanatic zealot with the same weapon? Not remotely in the same league. I suspect it is due to the one handed penalty and not having enough skill based enhanced damage mod.

I had the idea of using passion as a two handed weapon anyway for zealing, and while the dmg isn't too bad it is rendered unusable due to two things- hit blinds target and monster flee. Gah.. whoever had the idea to put these things on something supposed to be used with zeal. PIs were a pain, specially the manaburning ones, since they had to be zerked one by one. I used warcry against them sometimes. Though I did not have to put any hard points in zerk.

2. Patriarch Shagga - Amplify damage axebarb ( frenzy )

This one had been on my mind for a while. It is inspired by Spankeh's Frenzy Max damage and Uber Guide. ( huge shoutout btw, is a great guide ). The idea is to use amplify damage curse instead of decrepify. Also ebotd/edeath zerker combo is considered godly for ubers due to huge cb and LL, so I decided to try it for normal pvm anyway. Also, axes. Axes are kewl.

The name is taken from a character from GRR Martin's Game of Thrones. Shagga wields two large battleaxes and likes to kill with either hand. Also wears a demon horn helmet so Andariel's visage ( which was needed for ias anyway ) fits here perfectly. Fortitude wire fleece for the barbarian looking effect.

Amplify damage is cast via Atma's scarab. Originally I wanted use lacerator in some way but it constantly casts monster flee ( why Blizzard, why! ) and is too weak in physical dmg anyway, so I decided to keep it to Atma's alone.

This dude is a blast. Hold RMB down -> whack! thwack! boom! and zooms around at light speed. The merc doesn't get in on the action much, so he's basically relegated to an auraboy rather than casting decrep, so I used pride. And well, decrep is not needed so much when amp is there.

Speaking of amp, well, it works. It's not reapers, but it isn't useless either. And when anything does get hit by amp, it just melts. Specially bosses. I can see why people like it for uber runs.

As befitting a heavily twinked mostly cookie cutter build, I finished the entire game on p8. There were some annoying things like charging skeletons, knockback thrashers and blunderbores and fanaticism/extra fast lister gang that can be a real problem because frenzy is interruptible ( undoubtedly its biggest downside compared to zeal and whirlwind ). And sanctuary aura ( lawbringer ) was needed against PI/MB wraiths and gloams. Amp is too unreliable vs them and they burn out your mana. Have I mentioned ctc glacial spike from Death? It's great. Taunt was used sometimes as well, and howl against Sabrina and De Seis. Those packs are hard, getting surrounded isn't a good idea no matter what damage you have. unleechables are annoying as well.

One death, from a double fanaticism/might boss pack of skeletons ( unleechable ) and spearcats in Halls of the Dead lvl 2 ( underrated area, can be hard. )

3. Patriarch Areo_Hotah, iDR Titan Berserker

First of all, I hate berserkers. Don't get me wrong, it is an awesome- one of the best- 1 pt skills to kill physical immunes and I wish every class had it. But killing every single monster in the game with it? A single target, slow, interruptible, defense-destroying and above all- unleechable attack? Gawd... Long ago I made an IK berserker, hated it, later remade it with grief and stormshield and still hated it. Warcrying or howling everything every 2 seconds is not my idea of fun.

This is where I got the idea to go for a mass iDR build. It wouldn't protect me against the powerful monsters, but atleast I wouldn't have to pop potions every time I got scratched by a random fallen. Finding a few good iDR items also helped. I also decided to make it a titan, cause, why not? Lulz.

This character's name is also taken from GRRM's works. It's surprisingly hard to find a polearm wielding fictional character.

I experimented this time by maxing Shout instead of weapon mastery for more damage. Not a very good idea imo: It leads to lower damage and AR for concentrate attack ( vs MIs ), and less critical chance. And defense doesn't exactly do anything for a berserker.

Players 1 all the way. He's capable of handling more but its the most fun this way, he kills everything in one, two hits. Plus, iDR characters are not suited to high players settings anyway, since it increases the monsters base damage.

So what's an iDR Titanzerker like? For a large number of early act monster types, it's awesome cause they can't hurt you. Later on they start doing more and more damage as well as alternate attacks like elemental damage so it's not as fun. Then we have to fall back on taunt, warcry, and of course, howl.

I selected the faith merc for some more attack speed, dmg and AR. And because prayer insight was too lame and common though it is perfectly suited to this build since the barb doesn't leech. F that, it's for casters. Fast attack speed is great. Also there was one PI/MI somewhere and the rogue killed it with fire arrows.

Worst enemy? Dolls. They do too much damage when they die and the rogue's AI isn't great for tanking them. They can be stunned using warcry, and then killed from outside explosion range using a range 5 weapon, but that's painfully tedious. And also can't be frozen or slowed. Gloams aint too hot either. They can be taunted but then they come near and manaburn. zzz. Atleast they die easily.

Now iDR is an interesting stat to have and this is the first time I built a character around that. But later in the game there are way too many areas and monsters that render it useless. And is especially noticeable when one doesn't have much hp ( titan ). Here's an easy example: The chaos sanctuary.

Doom knights: Do too much damage, iDR doesn't negate it.
Venom lords: Alternate attack ( inferno )
Finger mage: Mana burn, no leech -> potion belt empty
Oblivion knights: Elemental attacks, bone spirit

It's not hard to see why people don't generally go for iDR in a build. It sort of only works against monsters that you don't need it against anyway. Though there are a few funny things you can do with it- walk around in tomb viper clouds for instance, or sit in the Diablo's firestorm attack and not get hurt.

I still enjoyed this build though, more than I thought I would. No deaths, surprisingly enough.

4. Patriarch Conan - Whirlwind Barb

This one's as cookie cutter as it gets, utilizing the Barbarian's most powerful combat skill. Conan is a respec-a-barb, although the original character also completed hell using WW build- In fact it was my first barb pat and I used the IK set. Conan is a whirling juggernaut of pain, designed to take on players 8 hell at any area in the game.

This one is pretty much the only one I'll be playing a lot of, so he has his own charms and a little more care taken about the other equipment.

After having played WWsins through the game, I got more used to a tele-whirlwind build which has quite different playstyle, like teleport(Dragon flight) in, WW, to get the merc in position and all that. It's all right, though I'm not conviced its altogether 'better' then the fortitude barb, it's just different. Funnily enough, I found myself pressing buttons for cloak of shadows and Death sentry all the time, though it wasn't there obviously.

The teleport is most notable for quickly zipping through an area or through annoying dungeon walls like in the palace cellars, otherwise it doesn't matter much in open areas. I equipped the 2 wizardspikes to get 110 fcr on switch which means he can teleport, wow fast. Much faster than most characters. Helpful for Baal running and such. The Dual leech AR fcr ring is needed to get the last breakpoint. I'm quite proud of that ring actually.

One thing I have noted about builds with grief and LoH is that there is a big jump in damage between 'demons' and 'not demons'. That's true for any build, but it's particularly noticeable for a WW barb with rather low skill based and off weapon enhanced damage mod. Another thing is that enigma gives so much frw that I had to omit the 1 pt in increased speed, otherwise he whirls through enemies much too fast.

Most of the other equipment choices are very straightforward, so I'll just explain the the off hand weapon: Cham'd Azurewrath. This particular weapon hits the last WW bp and has two very important qualities- sanctuary aura and freezes target.

My goal here was to be versatile. No matter how well equipped, the whirlwind barbarian is neither invincible nor invulnerable. He still has the same basic problems. Physical immunes, manaburners, unleechables, and things that do damage too quickly ( since he can't pop potions ).

Sanctuary aura totally nullifies an extremely annoying class of enemies- the PI/MB wraiths. It reduces physical resistance of undeads to 0 and knocks them back. This is also effective vs gloams which aren't immune but with 90% DR, but I can cut them like paper with sanctuary on. It's also great for knockback vs oblivion/doom knights, charging skeletons and lots of things. Sanctuary is f*king awesome.

But sanctuary aura only works against undead. If anything else is PI, we have to zerk them. Decrepify works, but its too slow in practice against masses of things like death berserkers, hell temptresses and so on. Zerk is a difficult ability against dangerous foes, because its slow and lack of defense and leech.

Now there are things we can use against these such as howl, taunt and warcry. Which are good, but, there is a better option in my mind - whirlwind +freezes target mod. Freezes target is an extremely GG mod with whirlwind. It freezes everything to kingdom come and improves survivability greatly. Even more so against these non undead PIs, where we can whirl-freeze them and then zerk them alternately. It flows excellently with the pace of the character - even leeches a little assuming they are decrepified, while war cry is sort of jarring and not too good without fcr. Chasing down howled enemies isn't great either.

Freezes target also eliminates threat from De Seis completely ( if sanctuary wasn't enough ), Lister, and well most of the enemies in the game really. Its even better than I thought it would be. In addition to sanctuary and freeze Azurewrath also has decent physical, magic, cold damage and additional stats. Pinnacle support Whirlwind weapon if you ask me. This is my default combo when going into a random area not knowing what type of enemies will spawn. I do use dual grief occasionally for things like Baal runs and such. It does more damage, though its not a lot more, and a lot less versatile.

Okay I guess I've rambled on enough. My goal with this character was to get a barbarian character with which I could get up, select a random area, set p8, go there and kill everything. No matter what spawn type, no backing down from anything, kill at a decent pace and not have a load of trouble surviving. I've done dozens of random area runs and I think I am satisfied with having achieved that goal. Nuff said.

5. Patriarch Banehallow, Wolfbarb

No Barb sept would be complete without a Wolfbarb. Banehallow is named after a hero in Dota ( he's a werewolf basically ). Wolfbarbs are kewl.
Banehallow is also a respec-a-Barb. Originally he was a whirlwinder running Pindle, but I got bored of that.

Well, a wolfbarb is not exactly the most subtle character so there's not much to talk about. Hold down RMB on feral rage, smash their faces, the end. Weapon switch to toggle between sanctuary ( undeads/PI undeads ) and fanaticism ( generally ), and that's it. Can deal with players 8 hell in most places.

I've said earlier that I thought wolfbarbs were better than frenziers. Now though I wouldn't be so sure. They certainly are very similar in their playstyles. I would say frenziers are more versatile in their weapon selection due to not having much dependence of on weapon ias and also they are a lot less annoying in that you don't have to unshift to berserk or cast warcries and such. Wolfbarbs on the other hand can be made to be great defensive characters, though obviously mine isn't built that way.

6. Patriarch Hrothgar - Gold find Barb

Hrothgar was my main barbarian character for a long while, I used him for a lot of running, first Travincal and then chaos/WSK/Baal and so he reached level 95, upon which I converted him into a pure gold finding/gambling barb.

Not much to say about him really. He's equipped the way standard goldfind WW barb would be. Items: Grief pb/Grief pb, Wealth hellforge plate, Crown of Thieves (Lem), Rare amulet and boots ( 70+ gf etc ), M'avina's tenet ( manaleech/frw), 2x Dwarf Star, Chance guards. Switch: 2x Dual Lem'd alibabas. Merc: reapers, kiras/GA.

7. Patriarch Jayne_Cobb - Double Throw/Frenzy Barb

Described here. Skills and tactics mostly unchanged, but gear was slightly changed. He now carries 3 sets of warshrikes and lacerators. One mains, one weapon switch and the third set is carried in the cube ( pic ). By switching around the weapons when they get low quantity and relying on self repair, the repair annoyance is drastically mitigated, which is undoubtedly the biggest problem with this char. Though not entirely rendered moot, as he has to repair once every 10 min or so no matter how much you swap them around, but that's okay. His damage output isn't great either but on the lower psettings he kills as well as any other barb and is actually pretty fun. LCS

INTRODUCTION
How to sum this up? Let's start by saying that I chose to make a purist character because I've always wanted to play Single Player the way it was meant to be, getting from scratch to end-game OPness relying solely on my own skills: this is for me one of the greatest gaming challenges I can think of. Before someone asks, for "purist" I mean doing only what's allowed by the game within the 1.13d SP experience, therefore: no twinking or trading, no muling/editing programs, no mods, no time travel, no messing around with D2 files at any time. Being part of the original game content, "cheesy" tactics like the menu-teleport trick or S&E in dangerous circumstances were allowed, but seldom exploited.
The build choice fell on WW barbarians because I like their versatility, damage, and FCR breakpoints, it's an all-around solid and fun class to play. The most powerful RW weapon available for WWers in SP - namely Breath of the Dying - is quite difficult to get, and I decided that I wanted to obtain it twice for dual wielding, just for good measure. The idea of getting my hands on Zods always thrills me, and the gratification of creating botd is way bigger than, say, fiddling around in Trav/LK/wherever and getting Lo runes to make Grief with almost no effort. This extra challenge spiced things up for good, and gave me some more motivation to hold on with the project.


STORY
(more like a boring personal diary, but ok)
So here he is: Perkele, lvl 1 SC barbarian, dual wielding ebotd wannabe. As your metalhead friends will confirm, his name is a finnish curseword meaning "devil", possibly the most powerful profanity one can say in that language. This is his story, if you're curious about how he did it.
Blowin in the Whirl
His journey was, at first, nothing memorable. He breezed through normal as every good barb does. His first unique, found in the catacombs, was the almighty Bloodfist, but apart from that there was nothing else worth remembering from normal. He stopped for a while in act 1 NM because the lack of damage and crushing blow didn't allow him to keep going on smoothly, therefore he started to farm the Countess for Amn rune (Strenght runeword gives 25% CB) and Andy for some other juicy weapons. Amusingly, Andy turned out dropping Amn while the Countess gave him a Coldsteel Eye. Appeased by his first, quick grinding session, he moved on to meet NM Meph. Farming Mr. Piñata was quite a nuisance: it took a lot of time to reach him and get good loot, mostly because I wasn't spending any point into sword mastery (preferring mace instead) and I didn't have much %mf and CB, plus the tele charges from a random blue staff found earlier were expensive, so Perkele was always broke. After a few dozen runs I was already bored to death, but in the end Meph was kind enough to drop something useful: a Guillaume's. Getting this helm led to a huge twist in the gameplay: CB wasn't linked to weapons anymore, so my pool of hurty-stick choices increased by a lot.

Pimp my Barb
He champ'd with two random weapons, finished act 2 hell, but didn't want to annoy Meph again, so he backtracked and started with some act 1 routine runs: Andy, Countess, pits. Despite the shameful amount of deaths collected due mostly to me being a careless jerk, here's where some good loot started to drop; Ravenfrost, SoJ (which he proudly wore for a while), 40%mf Chance Guards, Reaper's and Kira's for merc, Metalgrid (first golden ammy to ever drop for him, crazy RNG) were all from the pits, while in other places he found: LoH (inner cloister), Nord's Tenderizer and Naj's staff (tower dungeons), 40%mf Gheeds and Heaven's Light (random pops in the catacombs). Andy was pretty stingy, and just a single, nice drop from her was worth keeping: a 48%mf Wartrav.
After a few weeks of lazy grinding, everything was falling into place: Perkele had a decent pair of maces hitting the last bp for WW, and all the stats were good enough to keep moving forward and own the rest of hell, but I still promised myself not to leave the pits without some RW bases first; I was specifically after a non-eth 5os BA for Beast RW (my next target) and some eth BAs for ebotd, which I wasn't expecting to find soon anyway. After a whole week unsuccessfully spent cubing the few white BAs I was able to find, one night a couple of zerkers dropped: a plain eth BA and a non-eth 5os BA. Dunno if the chances of this happening are low enough to be considered jaw-dropping, but they surely were for me!

Lord of the Runes
Then I quested till the forge, which granted me an Um, but most importantly I popped my first HR, a Sur, in the city of the damned. Another Sur meant Beast, so it was LK-time. I ran the place intensively, but no HRs ever dropped in almost a week. Eventually, after losing an Ohm and a 15%dr String of Ears because of a software crash, a superchest gave me a Ber. Not the Sur I was looking for, but oh well :) I barely had the time to make Beast and respec to axes, that just half an hour later Bremm's gang threw in a Jah, thus allowing me to aim for Enigma pretty soon. I got the runes to cube up another Ber in a week or so roaming around act 3, and in the meantime I also farmed hell Meph scoring all sorts of goodies: Highlord's, a couple of Wizzys, Arreat's, Razor's Edge, 5 or 6 String of Ears (all below 12%dr tho), and a 15@ GC which added up to the other shimmering charms I already had. Since I had a total of 34@ resists in my inventory, I realized I didn't really need Arreat's, so I stuck with Guillaume's instead.
The random Smoke armor Perkele was wearing was soon replaced by Enigma, made in a broken mage plate armor once it was repaired and socketed through the cube. This part was utterly ridiculous: it took me about five days to decide what armor to take, during which I ran the pits and other places collecting junky cube food while struggling hard with my overcrowded stash. To make things even more complicated, other valuable items were also dropping during the process, like a second plain eth BA (jaw dropped again) and Gores (perfect roll yay), but in the end I somehow managed to sort my things out.
At this point Perkele was fully geared up and ready to pursue his long-time dream: one Zod to rule them all. The designated victims for his rampage: those cute council members in Trav, big surprise here. I ran them for ten days, 30+ hours of never-ending, merciless massacre. The results were pretty satisfying rune-wise: 4x Vex, 2x Sur, 2x Ber, 1x Jah... then suddenly, on tenth day, Cham! Time to leave the poor guys alone and cube their treats. One of the eth axes was socketed by Larzuk and in no time Perkele's first Breath of the Dying was born, with an amazing roll of 396/12. One down.

BOTDouble or Nothing
My focus then switched from farming runes to leveling. Perkele was sitting at lvl 94 when he started to do p8 pit runs, and I wanted him to be at least 96. My plan was to kill boss packs, cube all the HRs I was able to find, and possibly cube-socket eth-BAs in order to get a 6os roll (thus sparing, with some luck, one Larzuk quest reward), but things diverted a bit when I knew about the upcoming winter RFO. Favoured by a fortuitous Arachnid Mesh drop, I thought it was time to replace Wizzys with HOTOs, and so I did. The first 4os flail was incredibly hard to come by and made me waste some precious time - another reminder of what 1.13 business is all about.
Perkele reached lvl 96 after beating the Ancients and stopped questing at the WSK2 waypoint, then he contributed a bit to the RoF superchests thread while waiting for the RFO to begin. Not a single eth BA was ever found on the way to his final level, making me realize how super lucky this guy was to find those two eth bases earlier.
RFO was good despite the lowish amount of qualifiers: I was short of one Cham and one Ber to cube things up, so at the end of the competition it was a relief to see, among those few runes, that I had exactly what I was looking for. Breath of the Dying no.2 (another fantastic roll: 391/12) took soon the place of Beast to be displayed along with its twin, then I respecced to boost my strength and got ready to finally pat Perkele after five months of hard work. Yes, slapping Baal to death with two self-farmed ebotdz is as good as you may think.

SELF Q&A

- Can you give an overview of the build?
Well, it's basically an exotic version of the standard Trav Barb: whirl till every non-PI dies, berserk the rest, rinse, repeat. PIs can be annoying even with merc casting decrep, that's why I always keep berserk as left-click attack, and if the screen gets too crowded, howling a couple of times usually helps to deal with them. As for mana burners, I just have to attack holding right click (whirlwind) until I'm able to land one single normal hit and leech approx. half manabulb back, while for unleechables mana pots can be necessary from time to time.
Having life+mana leech on weapons gives great freedom to use whatever ring and piece of armor you want, that's why Arach is a permanent part of the build (fast tele is sweet). If I ever need extra protection I throw in a SoE or some rare ring with res, Wisp Projector, or Ravenfrost, and I'm just fine. Teleporting is not a problem for my mana pool either: dual HOTOs and Arach make life easy since I can go over 105%fcr with any fcr rare ring, and the impressive total of +10 to all skills makes tele quite cheap to cast.
Another cool thing about the build is the +60 to all stats from dual botd, more for bragging rights than else - the +60 VIT is not even BOable. Raw damage output is almost the same as two +340dmg Griefs. Made in crystal swords. Made in China. But poison novas are prettier than two green blades! :D

- No Arreat's?
Since I have good life leech and I reach a decent amount of resists and AR, I prefer to focus on damage instead, and Arreat's doesn't help much in this regard. I never had to use this helm at any point in the game, really.

- What about killing speed? What's better, dual ebotdz or ebotdz+griefz?
According to some old calculations, dual ebotdz should deal more damage. Truth is, personally I don't see a big difference in terms of final damage, but it's quite clear that Beast helps a lot to hit targets. Fanaticism works wonders to increase the notoriously low AR of whirlers, and on top of that, it makes one-hand attacks like berserk much effective, thanks to the improved damage and attack speed. Still, unless you use ATMA bugged stuff, Beast is weak and you must repair it often. This is a big no-no for me, that's why I like the dual ebotd variant more. However, my Beast could still be used as secondary weapon in case I need to single-handedly kill stuff in the future. Yes Nihla, I'm looking right at you.

- Why not Treachery and Andy on merc?
Because I just came out of a RFO, and I had to throw them away to make room in my stash. Not a big loss anyway, they can be farmed again. Treachery, Andy, and many other options would be better for sure, but the GA+Kira combo works fine too. Oh btw I made a list of the most valuable finds that I had to charsi in order to gain more inventory space (and because I like to do it the sebhehe's way), go ahead if you like horror stories.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I'm very happy on how this came out, everything shaped up wonderfully, with the right items dropping at the right time in Perkele's story, almost like the game knew what I needed, for once. Was the experience fun? Sure it was! Top-five moments were my first Cham drop ever, the Ber+Jah drop in half an hour, Metalgrid as first golden ammy, the RFO, and patting. Also surprised by the two botd rolls, I didn't expect to be that lucky, I wonder if this is the way the game has to compliment my commitment.
Finally, I'd like to thank you people of the SPF for all the info, support and company provided during the journey. You're some cool human beings, especially if you made it through the whole wall of text without skipping any part. :cool:

I already had a frenzier, but he was optimized for gold horking (lvl. 20 Find Item). The melee Baal runners' project inspired me to make another frenzier with a stronger damage component. I can safely say I succeeded. I played this build through hell at /P8, and only lowered the /players to 3 for Baal (I instinctively put /players3 as soon as the big one entered the WSC, otherwise I would have taken him down at /P8 too).
Nightmare went by smoothly due to a couple of 'Shael' Butcher's Pupils.
Normal has been fun, because I lazybastarded myself through the acts in an MP game. Thanks zarfen!

In order to describe this barb, the word 'lawnmower' would be closest. Act III was fun for a change, killing all those flayers in two hits and running around like he's been dropped into a kettle of Red Bull at birth.

I did die a couple of times:
- Iron Maiden. In Normal, Nightmare and Hell.
- Mana burn ghost pack
- Frenzied Tree pack
- Frozen Tundra, which was due to the non-leechables and physical immunes, and my impatience...

Thanks to the decrep on my merc's Reapers I did reasonably well in the arcane sanctuary and the flayer dungeon. Once the ghosts were decrepified they fell to my blows eventually. I now officially heart my Reaper's Toll. I doubt if I'll ever make a close combat character without a reaping merc again.

The character screen for this one is a lying bastard, because the single thing that elevates Grief from great to hax is not displayed. I decided to calculate my damage myself.

I assumed +1 to skills from Battle command, +310% ED from might merc, 305-325 poison damage from venom, and 54-238 cold/lightning damage.
I decided to trust the AR figures from the LCS, and this leads me to

Another lie in the LCS is the chance to hit Baal with the sword, since the 'Eth' in Grief lowers his defense by 12.5%. Since I apply Battle Cry liberally, my chance to hit the bastard rises quite a lot. Decrepify erases that, but the double damage I inflict while baal's decrep'ed compensates for the lower chance-to-hit.

Conclusion: I think I have a reasonable shot at a sub-6-minute Baal run with this one. I just need more practice and a way to speed up wave 2.
Things still on my to-do list:
- Baal this build into lvl. 90+
- Try replacing fine charms with steel
- Try replacing my prebuff gear [HotO+echoing weapon] with lash+crescent moon.
- Try guardianing my untwinked freezealot to balance this rediculous collection of gear.

So what was it like playing him:
Normal was easy, a bit slow until I could equip double Bloodletter swords that carried my until the Crainte and Husk became available. Later on I used those swords which got upgraded to elite versions at level 60.
Nightmare was really a breeze, but I had many deaths due to FE monsters corpse explosion which would simply wipe my whole life bulb. Other then that no real problems in Nightmare.

Hell is where things started to get interesting, and it didn't happen until Act2. Lots of unleachables means lots of NDE's and some deaths. This barb is a leech beast, he has no other "defense" strategy except to hit them hard and leech. Well, he has one. Taunt. And Act2 was the place I learned to use it. I changed my play style a lot. Now I had to retreat, Taunt, wait, kill. No more just kill. It added some thinking to the process, but not much. And it slowed me down a lot. Plus, often my Fade faded away when tiptoeing around monsters simply because I wasn't getting hit often. No Fade means lots of problems for Uggh. So yeah, unleachables are the bane of this character.

Later on I added a point in Howl, as I got swarmed frequently in Act3. Lowish life, lots of flayers and interuptable attack equals some embarrassing deaths to "knife bigger then body" flayers. One point in Howl sorted things out. And watching slowed monsters trying to run away while I hack them with a sword in the back is sweet, sweet vengeance :crazyeyes:

Boss fights were easy, Uggh packs 50% CB at 5 fpa, and Azrael 40%, so bosses were not a problem.

Mana burners in Act5 were very annoying. Especially if some PI boss spawns with mana burn, then I have to resort to mana pot chucking and using slower Berserk attack. An "interesting" thing happened in Throne of Destruction. The spawn was horrible: souls, vipers and OK's. At one moment my merc died to IM, I was Amped and thought it was safe to frenzy the nearest Doom Knight. In the last moment I noticed the IM red whirls around the Amp cloud. Two curses active(not the best picture), that can't be. It was some sort of bug I guess, because Mallah cleansed me of IM, but Amp animation was still there after talking to her.

Baal dropped all yellow, nothing worth mentioning. Other drops weren't really exciting either, including forges.

The future of this character consists of some MP games and probably retirement when I get bored with him.

Yayz! This wasn't an easy one. As i have posted in the daily, i dusted off my old frenzy barb who was my first sp char under classic (cleverly named after my own self), and launched an assault against hell minions. I got some multiplayer help in actII from one of Snuva's chars a few weeks ago, but ActIII-V were done in solo. Certainly not a powerful char, but hell viable, and oftentimes immensly fun to play. What made it even harder, that i just recently swapped to a might merc, who is only lev69 or so, and dies way too often, so i pretty much had to do late game merc-less.

Dracul's grasp was certainly the key to survival, it triggered very often (no surprise with a 5 frame attack) and pretty much kept me on max hp. Made act bosses ridicolously easy in particular (1 healing potion a piece for Diablo and Baal). Same for ancients hadn't they spawned Fire Enchanted 4 times in a row insta' killing me, of course. When they finally didn't i had an easy time killing them. Hardest part of the game was definitely the frozen river (gloams, ghosts...and i can't leech with berserk...oh, joy!), the chaos sanctuary wasn't easy either, though i only had 1 IM dead during the whole game.

This is a project I started a while ago (1.12). Its an effort to have a runeword-free character (at least through hell) with the highest total TC possible. Unfortunately, that means hamstringing oneself quite a bit. Despite my last few (1.13b) pat/mats, I do love the unique items, and wish that they were the ultimate items, not RWs that have much lower requirements.

He cruised through NM as a massively twinked frenzier. Once he hit hell, he stayed at the pits and levelled to 84. At that point, he dropped all runewords and began methodically working through hell quests. In his first rally, he through up till the CS, where he ran into IM. I tried to get through the CS a bunch, but it was so frustrating that he got shelved for a while. I was poking around in my save folder yesterday and saw him again. Now that IM is no longer an issue, I thought it was worth reviving him. He finally beat Baal today. He was much more of a struggle than any of my recent characters, but was a lot of fun (and pretty to look at.)

The name is the latin for the Golden-Crowned Kinglet. It’s a tiny little bird (barely bigger than a hummingbird) that is fairly dark and drab other than a spectacular, bright yellow patch on top of his head. Given that this guy is pretty dark colored other than a few splashes of gold, I thought it was appropriate…

Thoughts:

Total TC: 945. I thought about going with dual death cleavers on switch, to get his total treasure class over 1000, but that seemed silly. The Mang’s was actually usefull for pre-buffing.

It was lots of fun bringing him through hell (haven’t done a frenzier in ages – what a blast), but it was depressing how much he struggled. He got through most of nightmare with Grief/Oath, fortitude, dual-leech rare ring, SoE, Goreriders, etc, and was vastly more powerful with that outfit than his final gear. As a show-off feat, I’m proud of him, but I’m sad that the balance of the game is so tilted away from the rarest of rare unique items. The speed of the dual grandfathers was just too slow, and the relatively low leech meant that he was pretty fragile. He died a bunch. When I was being careful, I walked into situations slowly and taunted everything on screen. That worked fine, but I was often too impatient. The merc was useless, without much damage or tankability compared to normal. The lack of leech on his gear had lots to do with that.

He was most vulnerable to mobs. One-on-one, he could beat down pretty much anyone. But with crowds, he got hammered. Surprisingly, one of the easier parts of his journey was beating the ancients. Easy rolls…

The best thing about him was his looks. The deep dark blue/black of the Tyraels was very pretty, and set off nicely by the shimmering gold of his swords and hat. I dearly wish that the merc graphic changed with their gear, so he could be marching along with a moron in the exact same outfit. If that were the case, I probably would have given him a barb merc so he too could swing a Grandfather.

So, as I said, I like frenzy. It's a lot like playing a fanatic zealot with berserk and level 30something BO. I played from creation through a3 hell on p8, and then dropped to p3 (where I stayed for the rest of the game) because I'd already hit my usual maximum level for novelty chars, and I'd reached the point where things had enough life that it was getting boring, particularly PI mana-draining things.

At no point over the course of the game was I particularly in danger. Deaths only happened from me being lazy and not berserking around OKs. Ancients were a joke - I namelocked one, which apparently was the toughest of the three because the other two died off the backswings before that one went down. My life never dropped even slightly. Baal and minions were similarly simple. There was no running around and optimizing the location for the battle or anything, I just tanked it all. Also, thanks to a truly impressive collection of OKs (backed up by gloams and serpents in the throne), my merc died enough that I ran out of money and so had to do minions/baal solo. Didn't matter.

The #1 objection I see to the BK set any time anyone writes about it is the knockback. I, however, had no such troubles, and I even somewhat liked having it around. I put the knockback sword in the secondary hand, so any time there was more than one monster around, if I namelocked one, only the other monsters would get pushed back, while the one I was trying to kill died promptly. If there was only one monster, I was moving so fast from frenzy that I basically didn't break stride when they were knocked back.

All that being said, I'd never recommend the BK set to anyone who didn't want to do it just to have done it. I'm pretty sure I could shop a pair of better weapons pretty quickly, let alone using RWs or something. But, I'm one of the people who wanted to do it just to have done it. And I did. And I'll never touch that set again. I do plan on making another frenzier at some point using real weapons, which I expect will be extremely buff. I'm also tempted to make a frenzier with max increased speed loaded up with FRW just to see if I can break something.

Hellforges gave um/ko, and a4 hell provided a tal's armor and an alma negra (roughly my 20th of each, meh). All in all, this was far more entertaining than my last class-specific set char. Next up in class-specific-land is a trang's venomancer.

This was fun.

I played the entire game (minus act bosses/ancients) p8 with no slowdowns. In fact, I can tear through p8 WSK faster than the majority of my chars can do it on p1 - one to two hit kills on basically everything, combined with the absurd FRW speed of a frenzier is pretty impressive.

I currently do about 40k damage per second in this gear, not counting CB, and I'm not done levelling and synergizing, and I'm wearing extremely defensive equipment. Using a pits setup (completely sacrificing resists) I can reach a good bit past 50k. My current gear setup provides 5.5 fpa - I can hit 5 fpa by switching forti out for treachery, but that equates to less damage over time due to the coolness of fortitude. I can also switch to a MF setup (skullders instead of forti, MF charms instead of resists, dual ali's on switch to hork) and maintain a very good p8 pits speed. I'm pretty sure he outdoes my WF/forti strafer in pits speed in both the 0%MF and 250-300%MF categories.

I don't really know what all else to say about the char - my usual list of how the tough fights went is rather pointless (if you want to see it, just imagine any given spot in the game and add "was absurdly easy"). Pul/Hel from forges, only useful questing find was a Trang's belt. I definitely plan to level him up some more and use him as a pits/WSK runner.

This one was really fun! The gear isn't really high end, I could have used some more if I'd stripped some of my other chars, but that was totally unneccessary. In Hell, he died just once in the WSK when he met a bunch of OKs/Gloams/Horadrim ancients when he came down into the Throne Room area. A few more deaths before in Normal/NM just because I didn't concentrate too much on careful play, I needed something to relax and this guy surely was refreshing.

Introducing TwoHand_Touch, a frenzy barb. Primarily he used a pair of Crescent Moon PB's with a pair of Lawbringer PB's on switch. Hell Baal drop
I don't remember anything else good, but c'est le vie.

There were three deaths. Two of which were avoidable, one to IM in normal, and one to Lister in Hell. The third was to a hideous triple boss pack of Blood Lords in the Glacial Trail. I didn't get snapshots of them, but it took me the better part of half an hour to scatter them far enough apart so I could take them out. There was Fanatacism/Extra Fast/Extra Strong and some other mods I missed, but I came into one of the more open areas on the map, and they pounced.

IM was not really an issue once Lawbringers were equipped. The sanctuary aura and pathetic physical damage made it fairly easy to avoid trouble, and if the pretty swirly was overhead, fade got rid of it quickly enough as he ran away.

Now that he's done, I will probably give him an pair of Azurewraths and try that, and also try him with Azurewrath/Grief.

Definitely fun, and a variety of different useful CtCs made him powerful enough, if not dual Grief/Fort haxx powerful

Next up for me is to pat a druid I'm working on, and work on an assassin that I've been meaning to do.

HF drop: can't remember what NM dropped, but probably just as bad as hell. Which dropped a hel.

Lvling:
Went twinked through normal. Not much to report here. Equipped my first blood piece (a ring) at lvl 34.
I had restricted myself by the rule that if I reached the lvl to equip one of the crafted pieces that I had to equip it even if it was worse then my twinking gear. This rule really hurt in nightmare where I had to dump one of my butchers pupils to equip one of my blood axes. They had roughly the same damage, except that the pupils have deadly strike, IAS and open wounds.
Then went into hell. Which turned out to be a bit of hell because of lacking damage. Parked him halfway act 3 for a while. Finally crafted a better weapon (dire spawn) and I was back on my way.
Had a hard time in the plains of despair. Glooms all over the place and with less then 20% LR at the time they really hurt. Had some NDE's especially with a few championpacks there. After reaching the WP I realised I needed a better armor before going further so did some more crafting. After only a few crafts had an armor with no resists, but it did have 2 sockets. So decided to put a few resist all jewels would be in place. Put in 2 with 10 resist all each and some minor second mods.
After that went through the rest of the act and most of act 5 with relative ease. Had some trouble in the crystalline passage with those succubi. Also died there once with an extra strong boss. Also there and in the glacial trail slow going because of all the PI's.
Then on the to ancients. Defeated them on the first try. Only bad mod was amp. Tried to take on all three at once. Which cost me a row of full juvies to keep myself alive. Decided that it was wiser to separate them because sooner or later I'd be to late with the potion. Then fought one and when that one almost died the second one showed up. Disposed of both and then went after the throwing guy. The whole fight was surprisingly easy.
Further no problems to get to Baal. The final fight lasted about 5 mins because I only had 7% CB and a 43% chance to hit Baal. But he hardly gave any trouble.

Random rambling:
- When I wanted to make this character I really had my heart set on a frenzy barb with colossus blades. Already checked the needed strength and dexterity. But then I checked the crafting recipes and found out I had to use axes. That was a major setback since swords are far more stylish. (They should really make a bloodrecipe with swords)
- Most pieces were crafted with only a few tries. Only the axes and the ring took a lot of crafts before anything decent showed up.
- The difference between the usual amount of leech i have and this (19/16 depending on which weapon hit) was definitely noteworthy.
Still the leech was (at times) not enough. A frenzy barb should be able to just rush in, but I had to take some care.
- Biggest drawback in this build was the lack of dracs, imho a must for every frenzybuild. With these you still get more leech plus you can leech of monsters you normally can't.
- Also tough are the repairbills from this guy. Highest was over 100.000 gold at once. Weapons weren't even broken then so it could have been even higher.
- If I'm not mistaken this guy had 4 deaths. Three of them were because I got overconfident. The last was because of IM. Was dead before I even heard the sound of the curse. Also had lots of NDE's.
- Retirement plan: will probably play him on occasion. If I can get my hands on enough pgems I'll try to craft him some better gear because there's lots of room for improvement.
- All in all not the strongest frenzy build, but fun to play.

Wow this was much longer then intended. If you read through all this without falling asleep congratulations! You should get a medal.

Funniest char I've played in a long long time.
So much more tactics involved than my first pat, a hammerdin.

I think this will be my mp baalrunner. But I need to find him some better equip for him to be helpful enough.

No really though battles. I died uncountable times with this char, At least 15-20 times.
Ancients were pretty easy. Died once to them, when I was to slow to check them for FE, They weren't FE but they crowded me and my merc with amp damage and I was dead pretty soon. Since I didn't want to run from Crystalline Passage, I restarted the game and fixed the Ancient's Way waypoint. Went up, triggered them, no FE. Started to bash and run around a bit. Korlic went down quick to me and my merc's CB. And almost directly after that Life Tap triggered and the two others were pushovers.
Baal and his minions also went fairly easy. One death to Lister when I was to slow with WC and they stun locked me. After that I was forced to run around killing different bosses to gather money for my mercenary. After I resurrected him Lister and his gang were shattered and it was easy picking them off with my mercenary's decrepify and my war cry.

I have learned that War Cry is a fabulous skill and I will soon build a berserker so I can use it again. Also the 5% of life tap on draculs equals to a 5% to cast a belt of full rejuvs. One hit and lifebulb is full.

Please tell me if I've forgotten anything, or if you have any questions.

As mentioned before he was very fun right from the start and first few points into Double Swing. It was pretty cool to use DS because at slvl 9 it's 0 mana. :) Plus DS is pretty fast and looks cool. :) I maxed Frenzy first. With FRW it gives act 3 was a breeze. You run to the shore of a river, LA over and frenzy again. :)

Hell was pretty easy although it wasn't very fun to wait clvl 82 to be able to carry second weapon so I used Nord's, Horizon's etc until clvl 82. Once I reached WSK WP (clvl 80) I went to the pit to lvl to 82 and then went to finish the game. Baal was piece of cake with static + CB.

Ancients were a breeze. Nobody was PI so it was easy. He died once in the WSK from IM of course. It didn't occure to me to use same trick as in CS: run straight to Oblivion Knights and kill them first.


edit: FYI Scipion is the name of a roman general who defeated Hannibal :)


HF gave me UM. Baal of course gave me nothing, but even that didn't diminish the greatness of this. 😁

In addition to that, I had Heart Carver+ Ali baba on switch for horking, and spare utility stuff: Rattlecage, Tal's Mask, Stealskull, Atmas Scarab, Laying of Hands and a Goldwrap. Stash was full of Iron, Sharp and Fine charms of different sizes and qualities.

Notable find is Dracul's Grasp, at his 4th Pit run, while still untwinked.

The most relevant missing piece of equipment seems to be an Arreats. Having Demonhorns, Wolfhowl and a bunch of unique claws, but not an Arreats made me a little mad...

Up till I decide to twink it, I had a hude problem with AR. From the point I decided to use the Death Cleavers on, I just dumped a lot of skill points in Axe Mastery and started hitting stuff again. Before that, I relied on Angelic combo, but it forced me to use Tal's for LL and ML and therefore I had nowhere else to get CBF but Duriel's.

I actually just switched Duriel's for Duress. I wanted to make it in an Archon, but decide to go with a fine Wyrmhide I had spare.

It's pretty amusing to chop stuff at 5fpa. Its a shame that further improvement in gear can come mainly from HF rushing... 1.07 rack running and 1.11 LK chest running were not supposed to be the sources of the best pieces of equipment. We should have to kill stuff. [/rant #1]

The most unpleasant part of the game were the OK infected maps we rolled. They were everywere they could be, usually in Stone skin versions... IM makes it silly.[/rant #2]

Berserker Axes should REALLY had 3 times their current durabillity. Every 3 minutes I had to stop the chopping to repair them. C'mon what is that? 26? [/rant #3]

Most of all difficulties were made while MP while a Pally, a Wind druid and/or a Necro from RL very close friends. This resulted in my missing NM HF drop... Hell HF gave me a lousy one... I'd say Hel, if it's even possible to happen.

After we patted, I went back to try myself against the Ancients. Despite one being cursed, one extra strong and one HF aura enchanted and 2 of them Lightning enchanted, they were pretty easy to dispatch.

In the end, I changed a bit my concept about melee builds. The warcries add to this character a nice share of strategy and crowd control.

I guess I will pit run eventually from now on, but I still love sorcs.:rolleyes:

HF: Amn/Hel/Shae
Found a Rattlecage off normal Baal, Kuko and Skin of the Vipermagi in A1 and A2 of NM. Actually horked a unique (Ironstone) off Hell council, but not many good finds in Hell.

The character was really fun to play, having a far better safety margin than I've experienced with melee characters in 1.07. He died a couple of times in NM due to my inexperience/overconfidence and stingy use of War Cry. No deaths in Hell: he took Baal's 550x4 damage Manaflame to the face and sprang a Leap Attack into Nilthi's face to kill two of the tougher bosses. The Ancients were easily defeated at the cost of half a dozen full rejuvs and 100k(!) in equipment repairs plus a merc resurrection.

I leveled him up with my standard 1.07 twinking gear: Berseker's + Hsaru's until Sigon's set can be equipped, cutting down to just the belt/boots/gloves around level 22-24, and then waiting until I could equip Immortal King belt/boots/gloves. I stalled a bit in NM waiting for the Embossed Plate to become available from my Assassin's merc to finish up Hell and become a Mat, but once that was available with the Scintillating charms, I tore through Hell until A4. I was fully geared (sans Berserker Axes) by level 61, but by that point my Grandmaster's Naga of the Vampire and 6x PEmerald Naga were really slowing down against the many Poison Immune enemies. I built this character in an attempt to avoid Crushing Blow as much as possible, only equiping the above gloves in A4 Hell to get some better killing speed. Once level 71 was attained, he probably doubled his killspeed. The weapon calc has him pegged at 6 fpa per axe and with the decent AR he was getting at least 75% chance-to-hit in A5 Hell, but it seemed a lot faster than than due to the chance to crit from his axe mastery. So I was able to overcome the "CB is king" bugbear in 1.07, but only to a limited extent and at significant cost (Fals and Orts don't fall off trees in 1.07).

The hardest part about the character was keeping up with his axes' and armor's repair costs. 2800+ life with 28 PDR and full FR/LR made him near-invincible, but I'll bet those axes cost a cool million gold in 3 levels if they cost a dollar. I'd highly recommend a Sword Frenzy barb for 1.07 for the budget concious, but those axes sure are fun to watch!

Retirement plans are to run the Council for gold and crafting supplies. He's died a couple times to uber-spawns (2 PI/cursed bosses + boss pack of Heirophants), so I'm still working out the gear on him. Next up is a Hunter/Hurricane Druid--Mizan the Might merc is mighty happy that the Tiara and Embossed Plate are getting shuffled his way.
