Killed by Doom Knights

This is my first post so I hope I am in the right place to ask about this.

I have a clvl 74 Barb and was back in normal level while leaving some items for my new character. I was killing time going through the acts until the game was stable enough to leave and then come back with my other char.

Anyway, I got killed twice by the Doom Knights on Act 4 which I found somewhat shocking! :shocked:

Can anyone give me any ideas as to how I was killed instantly by a doom knight when I could stand toe to toe and kill Diablo/Baal in normal with about 5 hits?

I'm guessing you were cursed with Iron Maiden from an Oblivion knight and didn't notice, that's assuming you were in the Chaos Sanctuary. Once most melee characters get cursed with IM and don't notice it it means instant death. Other than that I see no other reason why your barb would just die.

to clarify, Iron Maiden returns damage you deal back upon yourself by several hundred percent. It means instant death for any melee character...which is why we fear the wsk and chaos santuary.

How can you tell if you are cursed with IM?

You would see this icon over your characters head. (Just scroll past description of the skill)

Yes that's it exactly - I didn't even realise what it was!

Is there anyway to combat it other than to run away??

No way that I know of. I usually just go to town and heal and try to draw the Doom Knights away from the Oblivion Knights far enough so I don't get cursed. Or if you run past the Doom Knights and get within striking distance of the Oblivion Knights they curse you with decrepify instead of Iron Maiden.

Edit: Sorry, Maniphesto is right you could use those attacks. I was just thinking of what I do with my pali and summoner.

yes.

your a barb, so use berserk.

IM only effects physical attack, since berserk is magic, IM will not effect your attack.

you could also get a throwing item of some kind on your weapon switch.

also notice the very characteristic sound when you're cursed with IM.
my baba got killed so many times that every time i hear that sound i panic, even when i'm playing with my hammerdin^^
