is a poor man's hammerdin possible?

I'm spankin' new to paladins, and just recently got back into the game itself, so I'm broke and clueless. I wanted to do a PvM hammerdin build (been using this as my guide http://www.purediablo.com/guides/news.php?id=535) but it seems to be very heavy in the "phat lewts" department. Since I stopped playing awhile back, all my mules and whatnot have been deleted into oblivion, meaning that when I say "Broke", I mean "I don't even have a single pgem or rune" kind of broke.

So my question: is it possible to get anywhere near the numbers in that guide without having uber gear? Or am I heading towards aggravation and (eventually) another dead character? I'm more concerned with the start to mid game since I can mf after I get the initial startup. The closest thing I have to anything decent is Khalim's Will for twinking, but that doesn't do me much good when I need to have +skills and fcr.

Are there cheap (or easy to find since I couldn't even afford "cheap") alternatives to what they mention in that guide? I play west coast ladder hc so I don't even know if his suggestions would even be possible (he mentions using 1.09 gear).

I was in your same position...old timer in D2X, but dead broke and starting new.

I have a lvl 34 hammerdin with spirit shield and spirit wep doing 900 dam with my hammers already. Spirit is a VERY affordable and powerful runeword for use for us currently poor pallys (ral,ort,thul,amn...check order though:)). Even rich folk use it in place of a HoZ to reach max breakpoints). My other gear is dirt cheap...cathans mask and ring, string of ears, etc. All this stuff is really really really cheap.

So be encouraged! btw, I'm playing on useast sc ladder.
 
Excellent. Just what I was hoping to hear.

Yeah, starting over really blows. Especially when the only reason you quit was because your lamer friends got burned out. Blah.

Oh and I heard everyone is playing on east now, what gives? I'd switch over but man... I can't stand having that 300 ping. I'd be crapping my pants in every Hell Baal run.
 
I think it is possible yes. My hammerdin doses 7k dmg with poormans gear. He is not really a cookie cutter in Hell, but I can help friends out if they need a quest:azn:

The gear setup is:

Complete Diciple set
Spirit 34% sword
Spirit 26% sheild, with nice resist.
Shako
3 combat skills amu
Carrion Wind ring (i think thats the name?)
Yellow ring for resist

I haven't yet tried the Guardian armor, but i think the resist will be nice, 90 in all in Hell. The damedge will stay the same, but damn its so low...

its not a "must", vigor+charge is extremely fast and adds style points if you dont have enigma :cloud9:
 
I have a level 60 untwinked hammerdin on Single Player, and he has yet to have died. He slaughters everything in /players 8 setting. Hammerdins are fine with self found gear. Enigma and HoZ are not even remotely necessary, nor is other elite gear. They are merely luxuries.

And Guardian Angel got very nice stats too (skill, block, max res) and is very cheap

i have a magic finding hammerdin. LVL 90.

gear:
shako with ptopaz
chance guards
goldwrap belt
2 perfect nagelrings
some rare amulet i found
low hoz
wizard spike
enigma. NO TORCH NO ANNI NO GCS

7.2k damage...

and i can solo hell extremely easy. i can do baal runs chaoz..8 ppl w/e.

u dont need all this crazy gear.

my hammerdin was really good with guardian angel armor and a lidless.

LoL. Dont let anybody tell u that u need OMFG 40RES HOTO 1378 DEFENSE NIGMAS 40+life PCOMBATS!!

shoot for a guardian angel armor...they are cheap. peaseant crown war hat.
lidless shield, and wizard spike. u can get all that pretty easy. :)

then just play for a while, you will find things, and eventually u can pick up a HoZ and enigma. those two items benefit very well. untill then, use all the resist charms u can get! :)
 
My Hammerdin is level 79 in act 4 hell. Maybe have spent 60+/- pgems on gear. He has pretty nice mf about 200%.

I am geting by pretty well on

Tarn helm
vipermage
goldwrap
spirit shield (very handy)
wizard spike (a must in my opinion, before that I used a rust handle)
chancies
morrow walks (that was a lucky find in the arcane sancturary)
life tap wand on my switch

act 2 merc with

insight
Gilliam's
Que Hagen's

I don't own 8 player hell, but I think that is due more to my own ineptitude then the gear.:cry:

I have followed the max damage hammer guide very closely, except for the gear (I can't afford most of it).

and let's get real. It takes time to get high end gear. A HoZ goes for over 2 hi and enigma is not cheap Jah, Ber, Ist. Hi runes are a ***** to come by. I have been following the tips on this forum for months now and the highest thing I have gotten is a Gul and that was non ladder.

So go for it! Have Fun! Being poor makes the game exciting:thumbsup:
