How to backup map?

I have the best WSK map ever. Question: How to save this map? If I click the wrong difficulty button or seting MP game, I wil be
Just save the map files in SAVE directory?
I've heard something about seed command, but never used it.

I hope saving the map is not considered cheating by SPF community, I wouldn't do so in that case.

I've never messed with maps in the save directory, I and most others use the seed. In ATMA if you goto the character tab there is a seed value. Copy this somewhere, I have a txt file on my desktop with good map seeds for each char and several place I like to run. This seed is the key to re-using a map. You can launch d2 from a comand line and use the -seed command and then the seed value that you saved. I always do this from the msdos/command prompt but its tricky with a space in the nae of the "diablo ii.exe" file. I copied the "diablo ii.exe" file and renamed it d2.exe for simplicities sake. The end result is a command like this (from inside the Diablo ii directory).

d2.exe -seed 123456789

One other thing to note is that goofy stuff happens when you start the game with a seed value. When changing seeds I always launch with a seed value, select the correct character and level, and then exit diablo. Then I restart without the seed and I have the map.

Actually one other, other last thing, you've obviously seen those map files in your save dir, if you haven't changed seeds to many times then when you manually change your seed the game will still find the map file and your automap with where you've explorered if you care, IMHO a good map is you that is simple enough you don't need the automap.

I dunno about here, but on the other other other other other forum, the official stance is that -seed is cheating.

It's a touchy issue here as well. Too many ways it could be exploited.

as long as it is not exploited however it is fine (like 99% sure on this) which means that

You called?

I believe the general consensus here is that as long as you keep the seed to yourself, (don't post it...share it...etc) and make sure you don't run the game with the seed command active, (Can get identical items with same fingerprint etc) then you are good. Oh, I believe you are supposed to tell people when you trade that you use the seed command, it is in the stickys.

Do some people refuse to trade if you use the seed command?

sweet, my secksi beast call worked!

sorry about that double post...

Potentially yes. Although I haven't seen it happen here. I used to do it, but now I just play at P1 until I find a nice map and then kick up the player settings. It is your computer, do what you want.

BTW: That is a real nice Baal map you have. Oh, and I know what you mean about accidentally clicking on the wrong difficulty. 100 pindle runs and your brain starts to drift...along with your mouse. :xdrunk:

ATMA can be exploited. Copy and move file can be exploited.

I think it's fair to restore a map, if you lost it for some reason.

the only thing to add here is that -seed is highly dependant on which version you are playing. In some early versions, using -seed was obviously cheating, while in 1.10 there is far less effect than in previous incarnations of the flag. Many developed their distaste for the flag back when it affected drops/spawns as well as the map.

Shagsbeard, are you certain of this? It is my understanding that the seed command still “overrides†some of the random numbers of the game, and that’s why you have to restart the game immediately after using seed to reload a map.

Sure? No. But it's not the same as it was before... that I'm sure of. You used to be able to force a specific drop with the right seed. I've heard that doesn't work anymore. I've only used -seed in 1.10 to replace a map on the character who found the map. I really think the maps shouldn't reset if you change difficulty... you should have a different map for each, but you shouldn't lose you maps as you switch difficulty. That would get rid of all the "cheese" dealing with finding the optimal maps to run Baal, or Countess on.

I agree if your going to abuse ATMA then there are better (or worse if you think about it) ways of doing it than just using a seed command.
I've done it once before after i got a really good meph map that i lost. As long as you save and exit, then remove the seed command, i dont see whats wrong with it.

My very personal opinion is, that fixed maps in SP are a flaw per se. Not to talk about the seed command. Granted, you can't trade in SP, but doing mephi runs in 0:30 is more than a compensation, it's a clear advantage. And frankly you can't trade in bnet either. Except HR's and some uber-items. I always refresh my SP-maps, resp. PlugY does it. It's btw. much more exciting.

No pun intended, different strokes for different folks......

*gasps* PlugY? Cool. Havent dared to use it with vanilla d2. Has some cool features, though. Hope your not using more of them ;)

Only the refresh map & the language chance thingie. The german translations are at times rather ..visionary..:)

Seriously, I was working on Pindling from 91 to 92 (got there too) and clicked nightmare. My first thought was "did I save my pindle map seed?" It took me a few seconds to recover from the Pindle induced daze and realize that Pindle is always the same.

As far as re-using a map goes verus the way it works on battlenet, I don't see the map re-use giving any legit SP'er anything that comes close to resembling an advantage over the things that are easily available on bnet.

Why would it be acceptable here when it is considered a GAT (Game Altering Technique?)

Explain.

If you use the -seed command you're a hack and deserve all the ridicule you get. Nuff' said.
