Holy Longevity! how long have you been playing?

I was just thinking of how old this game is. I checked gamespot and I noticed it's from June 29 of 2000! It's now over 5 years!

The expansion pack was released on my birthday a year later (June 26/01)

I'm curious how long peopl ehave bene playing, and what versions you've played through?

I can imagine a lot of people have probably played every character to the end. Gotten level 99's. Maybe gotten every item there is to be had? etc, etc.

I'm curious to hear stories! And what keeps you going?

I personally have only been playing for a few years now. Probably got the game around 2002 or 2003. I've never beaten Hell. Furthest I've gotten was two Act II or III in hell with the fishymancer (only character to beat normal).

This game is just a ton of fun. I can't think of a game that's lasted longer.

Since the day it came out. I was a big fan of Diablo even before Diablo II. I just can't stop going back and playing, even after quitting a couple of time for 6+ months each.

I've been playing off and on since the release. During 1.09 I played online almost exclusively. Then I ventured over to SP about a year after I'd quit online. Probably I've got well over a year's worth of playtime invested in the game, and I've still not tried out all of the builds that I want to try.

I've got a MA assassin at lvl 60 now, what an amazing class. It's funny, the assassin was the last class that I elected to play and ended up going Trapassin for my first, it was one of my favorite characters. Somehow I figured I wouldn't like MA, so I put off the next assassin until several characters later when I completed my Nat's set. As it turns out, the MA assassin is possibly even more fun than the Trapassin.

I remember when I first started I used to only play Paladins and Necros. Then I got really into Sorceresses. Then Barbarians. Then Bowazons. Each one was fun to play and was unique enough to make the game interesting again. Even the classes that I initially didn't like for some reason (Druid, Assassin) grew on me after I'd played them for a while.

As you say, this game has excellent replayability.

I played 1.09 a bit a few years ago, I had a couple of assassins, they weren't very good though and I never even finished normal. I started playing again in May this year (just before I joined the forums). Got one mat, a meteorb. But she's on my laptop, as are my proper stashes and my summon necro (in Hell), my strafer (NM) and my fury WW. Very annoying, because it's away being repaired. Still. They have had it for weeks.

Very very long... ;)
Only thing that keeps me playing is Enigma, and maby lvl 99
Both needs alot of time, so I think I will be ocupied before D3 :)

I started in May of 2005. Yeah, I'm a n00b. I haven't beaten Hell yet, though I have a sorc about halfway through it.

I first started with Barbarians and then after 1.07 I moved onto Amazons. After 1.09, it was Paladins, Sorcs and Necros. After each upgrade to the game, different builds have become more popular as skills have been strengthened or made weaker.

The game really does have excellent replayability.

Played D1 since it came out untill D2 came. Bought it the same day it was released and has played ever since (tho on and off)

I've been playing D1 since...a long time, and D2 extensively (and exclusively) since my sophomore year in HS (i'm a junior in college now).

I took the day off of college and work the day it was released. *cough cough*

Ive played every version, but I didnt pick up LoD until maybe two years ago or so. I played Classic for a very long time before my father and brother convinced me to pick it up. =)

I also played D1 back in '96 until D2 was released. D1 was a big hit on the dorm floors and we used to MP over the LAN all the time. Ahh, memories. =P

Been playing D2 about 4 months from its release. Played 1.05 mostly until LOD came out. Went through 1.07 and 1.08 briefly. 1.09 for a long time. Took a break of about 8 months in July 2003 to get my life back in order. By the time I went back, 1.10 was stable, but stayed in 1.09 for about 3 months to get some chars to Champion and my sorc to 99. Upgraded to 1.10 and still playing it. Will upgrade to 1.11 RRM (not RWM right away) when my Marrowwalk Bonemancer achieves Patriarch status. Will install RWM when my remaining chars need the new runewords.

Hrrmmm... I think it's been 4 years for me. I simply cannot get enough. I'm actually glad I'm only on 56K dialup, since playing on BNet would kill all my relationships!

There's a row of newer titles on my shelf waiting forlornly for me to stop playing Diablo. Muahahahahahaaaa!

Well, if the original Diablo is counted, I have played it from late 96, or late 97 (my memory fails me).

I remember getting diablo back in 97 for my birthday and played it off and on. For some reason I hardly finish games and always want to start over when I come back. I got d2 almost when it came out. Eb had a used collector's edition on sale that I bought after seeing it. I didn't have the money to reserve a copy of the collector's edition at the time. I then bought the expansion when it came out.

The fartest I've gotten was in 1.09 or .08 I believe I defeated baal with a necro that had some minions, but I cheesed my way to a vicory against baal and diablo by just recasting bone spirit and then getting killed shortly afterward then rinse and repeat. Whe I reached Nightmare I quit for some reason, I think it was either work or college. Now I've started over again  I'm trying to level a Hammerdin and a MeteOrb so that I can get a grail started. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who leaves and comes back over and over again. :D

I've played D2 virtually since it was released and got LoD on release day.

I have all the original boxes (just checked - D2 was on three discs, Install, Play and Cinematics and came with a Sierra Catalogue for 2000-2001 advertising Half Life: Opposing Force and Homeworld. LoD has the same Catalogue!)

It all started when I got Diablo as a Windows 95 shareware demo disc bundled with the first computer I bought for home.

I have only ever finished the game with one character (at v1.09) and my most crushing moment was losing a fairly high level, Titan's equipped Ammy to a freak accident with the "Delete character" key whilst watching a football match.

I am currently at v1.11b vanilla to get the FE correction.

What keeps me going? Elusive items? Variety of characters and builds? Insanity? I don't know. I just like it.

i have played diablo 2 since the day it was released in sweden.

before that i was playing the barb in the demo. so from 1.00 to 1.11.
Of course most of my playing time have been during 1.09 when i really started to play sp alone.
Sometimes all that time spent playing this game make you suffer a bit.
As there are few things i really want to do nowdays.
But then i again i never know what the next drop will be so....
