Highest damage weapons for one shot kill

I started a thread yesterday about forming a barb build around leap attack. With that thinking and that I'm shooting for massive damage for a one shot kill should I dump the shield and look to two-handed weapons? At least when you start a game the weapons that are available the Bardiche seems to be the top dog in damage. I guess the downside is I noticed you cannot throw points into polearm mastery until level 6. What's everyone's thinking about weapons choice for one-shot kills? Especially early game. One last question — the initial game Bardiche is rated at slow, but are there normal or fast attack versions later? Thanks.

The weapon type with the highest damage in the game is the Thunder Maul (non-magical regular one do 33-180 damage) but that´s for the late game, obviously.

For big weapons in the early game, I advice you to try out the Savage polearm recipe once you have the Horadric Cube.

Staff (any) + Kris (any) + belt (any) + diamond (any size) = Savage polearm.

Anything but the diamonds can be bought from vendors in the first two acts. (see Fara for the Krises)

You will get any of the normal and exceptional polearms except Bec-De-Corbin or Grim Scythe, with a probability of 1/10 for each. Partizan is the biggest possible. It requires STR 113, DEX 67 and level 23 to use.

The prefix will always be Savage (+61-80% damage). There is a 50% chance of a suffix and since the item level is 50, you can get some nice ones. +30% increased attack speed is possible for the six normal polearms and the Lochaber Axe, +20% IAS for the other three.

Yes, Bardiches are slow, and have another drawback, very variable damage. One of my fledgling sorcies was using Dimoak´s Hew (the unique Bardiche) in late act 1 and most of act 2. It was frustrating not knowing if she would need 2 or 17 swings to kill a monster...

Any of the elite Polearms have great damage potential, both as rare weapons, for runewords (several good ones possible) and the uniques are top notch.

Great Info from jiansonz, I will add that i use this recipe when playing untwinked all the time. My mercs use them. Or my char sometimes. Savage polearm or halberd are very good weapon for that stage of game. Requirement of "savage" affix to use such a polearm is level 19.

Be warn that Leap-Attack is very tricky to use and hard to aim. You would probably do better with berserk.

I found a three socket Bardiche and have plenty of chipped gems in my stash. I'm still in Act I. Emeralds appear to add the most damage (+10 poison to weapons). Is it best to have a mix of added damage to a weapon — i.e. a ruby, a emerald, and a sapphire or topaz? Or keeping with my desire for the highest damage possible just stick in threee emeralds?

that's not a downside IMHO
leap attack comes at lvl 18 :)
still, you can get to lvl 6 within 2 blood moor+cave full clears on /p8 (that is if damage and AR concerns you at such an early stage...)
these can be easily achieved with a barb's starting gear

I just savaged bill!

I used it and got a savage bill, 74%, and the merc will put that to good use. DAmn right he will, I used a diamond for that...
