High Rune hunting help

Hi, I am fairly new to Diablo Lod and i am having trouble finding high runes to trade for gear. Any suggestions on how to find them relatively easily?

Re: High Rune hunting help

Repeatedly killing the High Council in Travincal (Hell difficulty, as Gorny mentioned) is a new hot spot in 1.13. Also, chests around bonfires in Lower Kurast can pay off. I've found my two highest runes (Vex and Zod) in the Ancient Tunnels in Act II. It will take time - even with the increased rune drops in 1.13, the high ones are quite rare.

Re: High Rune hunting help

High runes usually drop in Hell mode.

You will always get atleast one from The Hellforge Quest drop, and the others have better (but not constant) drop chances in the 85 areas like The Pits or WSK or Crypts etc.

Lots of useful guides and info here: http://www.purediablo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=495535

I think the Val Kilmer avatar has scrambled your brains a little...

HRs, typically meaning Vex and up, can't drop from the Forge, and even the mid runes (Pul-Gul) dont always drop, you could get Fal from your Hell HF if you're not lucky...

All you can do for HRs is just kill LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of high level monsters as fast as you can.

edit: at time of posting, I have exactly 10% of your postcount too :)

Re: High Rune hunting help

Ok, any suggestions for places to kill lots of high lvl monsters? im a 87 hammerdin with poor gear

Re: High Rune hunting help

Chaos Sanctuary, Shenk/Eldritch, and Travincal council is what I do when I'm rune hunting.

Well hey.. haven't touched DII in like 5 years almost. My info is good but not what it used to be.

Now, if you wanted, i could tell you what you needed to do off the top of my head to get your hands on Deathcharger's Reins or get attuned to MC for the hell of it.

Re: High Rune hunting help

I would say the top places to look for HRs are Chaos Sanctuary, Travincal and the Cowlevel.
But I had success clearing the Arcane Sanctuary with my Lightsorc (no LIs there) since all ghost like monster (ghosts, souls, storm casters) has increased runedrop and there are 9 superchests too.

I'm gonna assume thats a WoW reference, and choose just to shake my head in mild disgust and ignore that...

I'm not 100% sure but I think any monster in Hell, or at least most of Hell, can drop any HR, so the only question is what levels can you kill the most monsters the fastest. As a Hammerdin, I'd say CS and Cows are your bread and butter, with lots of monsters and nice open space for your hammers to fly. Trav is nice because the Council all drop multiple items when they die, but drop-for-drop they dont have a better rate than other normal monsters.

Are you sure Souls and Storm Casters count as "ghost" monsters? I could swear that they drop "large" items, unlike actual Ghosts (the ones that are PI in Hell). The problem with Arcane, though, is that if Ghosts die while they're hovering over the void, they dont drop anything. Ghosts also occur in the Tower, where there is no void, so you can try them there - and you get Countess' rune drop at the end of every run, which can be up to Ist.

Actually they do drop stuff, it just disappears into the void. Which is something I wish I didn't know, because it drives me crazy if I think about what good items (I can't see them, so of course they are good) are falling off into that inky black nothingness.

**That didn't really add anything to the discussion, and I actually like the idea of running arcane and might start doing that a bit myself. My apologies, I'm just bored.**

Re: High Rune hunting help

I jumped on d2 last night for the first time in months, rushed a friend in hell, was workin through the tomb to kill Durry and merc killed a random monster along the way and earned me an Um. Not technically a high rune, but valuable.

Might wanna try those, lots of skele's and the like, which should be cleared easily with your hdin.

Re: High Rune hunting help

I'm just unlucky. Two Hell Forges = Fal and Lem. Awesome.

Right now I'm doing Pindle/Trav/Shenk/Eldritch/Cows with my necro. However, I've already had a Sur drop in the Pits and a Vex in the WSK.

Re: High Rune hunting help

i see from a few sources that the countess can drop up to ist. does it matter whether it's norm/nm/hell? i've farmed her for a few days on NM (being a sorc it's the obvious way sans infinity, since there is at worst, only one or two immunes), any point in hell countess farming if all you're after is low-mid runes?

Re: High Rune hunting help

It does indeed. She has different treasure classes for each difficulty level. She also has two separate treasure classes, one for items and one for runes. This is why she has an higher than normal chance at dropping up to certain runes on each difficulty level.

The TC information are:
Normal = Rune TC can drop up to a Ral
Nightmare = Rune TC can drop up to an Io (that's eye, oh)
Hell = Rune TC can drop up to an Ist

She still has a normal item drop too which is rolled prior to her rune drop, and is not much different than most any other superunique. Her normal item drop can drop up to a Lo on Hell difficulty.

Tombs should be avoided by all cost with a hammerdin, unless you have a backup attack for those magic immune monsters you will find a lot of there (greater mummies), but its a promising spot for hunting runes yes, a lot of monsters and super chests.
