help running 2 games in virtualpc

Hey Everyone,
I recently had my main pc die a horrible death, so I am trying to run 2 copies of diablo on my Vista laptop. I was able to install my two copies of the game easily using VirtuaWin (an open source virtual desktop program). One of my shortcuts links to
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo2"
and executes
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo2\Diablo II.exe"

My other copy links to
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II"
and executes
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe"

As far as I know, as long as the links point to non-identical exe files they should run on separate desktops using VirtuaWin. I can start each link individually with no problem. Unfortunately when I start the second copy on a separate desktop I get the Diablo II Critical Error "Only one copy of Diablo II may run at a time."

I probably missed something that someone who has done this before will recognize since this is my first time attempting to run two copies of diablo this way. If anyone has any suggestions about how to get my second copy running I would greatly appreciate that. Thanks

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

to run multiple diablos best thing to do is use sandbox. Google it, very easy to use. Blizzard said if it doesnt inject anything in diablo they wont ban for it (like dloader did)

Not true.

If you're running multiple instances of the game on one PC, Blizzard can very well ban for it. This includes Sandbox.

It's been discussed already and there are Blue posts on the subject.

I always read that different, perhaps I am wrong.. i read it like so:

1 cdkey + 1 installation + 1 computer = OK
1 cdkey + 2 installation + 1 computer = Not ok
2 cdkey + 2 installation + 1 computer (1 installed virtualpc) = OK (because it is essentially on 2 different PC's)

Essentially meaning that you could only install 1 game per cdkey. Running a virtual PC is the same as installing a second key on a second computer.

For example, I have two desktops side by side that I have two different legit D2's installed on. This is no different than running the same 2 legit keys on one computer through virtual pcs.

But ahh well, you are probably right though who knows. Guess it doesn't affect me due to the 2 physical pc's.

FOR THE OP:

Virtualwin is NOT the same as a virtual PC. All this does is provide a linux like virtual desktops, it does not create seperate virtual PCs. It only allows you to have fake desktops. This is why your installations are not working.

Instead, if you want to go the virtual pc route (and not sanboxie) then use the free VMware Player, or get Virtualbox. These will both require you to install the operating system, and then updates, and then the game. (just like a regular pc installation)

Gnomus is correct (and quoted me).

Only one running instance per computer is supported. The only legitimate way of running more than one copy of the game a t a time would be to use more than one computer.[/BLUE]

Only one running instance of Diablo II on a computer is supported.

Any attempts to circumvent this can be seen as a hack and may result in account closures and CD-Keys being disabled.[/BLUE]

There is no supported way to run multiple copies of Diablo II on a single computer. [/BLUE]

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

Thanks for those quotes Gorny,

Re-reading those I think my understanding is correct.

A VirtualPC is considered a second computer. It requires a seperate OS, drivers, installations, cdkeys, etc.

It would be like running an ESX server. 1 physical hardware computer, but you can run plenty of virtual computers (usually servers) on there, and you cannot tell the difference at all.

But of course the way they say it in those post still leaves the question unanswered... does blizzard consider a virtual pc to be another computer? (which any IT guy will tell you it is, just running on the same hardware is all)

Yeah right. Then why did blizzard ban for modding a .dll file so that you can run multiple D2 windows without 3rd party software? :whistling:

I'm sure Warden can't ban you also for using the Windows user-switch, but that doesn't mean Blizzard is ok with it

Easy question and answer. you actually answered it yourself.

"modding a dll"

IE - I hacked that dll, now blizzard doesn't like it?

.....

Virtual PCs don't hack, alter, or modify game files in anyway. (i've never used sanboxie though but it would be similar)

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

Well, i have been using the Sandboxie method for around 3-4 months now, and haven't been banned so far. (Does not involve modding diablo 2 installation more than renaming the folder.)

Imo using sandboxie is the same thing as using fast user switching.

It will not be supported by blizzard, but i doubt they will ban you for it.

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

You've got to be kidding.

If I use fast user switching, and my two boxed sets of diablo 2, they might ban me?

That's the most insane thing I've EVER heard.

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

Indeed, i bought two pairs of your game, just so i could mule safely and sometimes selfrush / level myself. Whats the problem :D?

"When there are 5 humans in a room, there will be 10 different opinions...

I don't think they can distinquish sandboxie and userswitching from each other.

It's ludicrous to think that "1 computer, 1 running game." would be a rule carved in stone.

What if two people play d2 with one computer (Both running their own instance of the game.) ? (dualscreens ect...)

Bleh, i use it, i haven't been banned for it, had no problems.

Just my 0.02€

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

@gorny i dont have links but i've read bashiok answer on sandbox cause alot of people were interested (he sometimes give honest answers not like other mods) and he said: its really simple, if it doesnt inject anything into diablo it is safe as it does not modify the game.
Sandbox is not 3rd party software which modify d2 like dloader for example did (and even that was allowed for years till more and more hack started to use it)

Blizz is going with "1 game per 1 pc" statement cause they are tired of answering is wmare/wine/loader/xxxxxxxxx safe to use. Its an old game and they dont want to waste alot of resources on support. They have no way to detect if you are running more then 1 game from your pc nor they plan to.
Imo using wmware and such is a waste of your comp resources (not to mention 99% of them are bloatsoftware and diablo dont run great on it).

People buying more games to run from same pc=more money. They even allowed multiboxing in wow.

Edit:
@ timmy

They allowed dloader to be used for years before they banned it-and they did that cause 99% of hacks and bots were using dloader to inject their stuff into diablo. Ability to run multiple diablos had nothing to do with ban.
If it doesnt modify dll=it cant be used as hack injector

Re: help running 2 games in virtualpc

Indeed, the fact that multiboxing is allowed on WoW, while running 2 acc's on d2 would be bannable is a LITTLE bit ludicrous.

Also i too remember that aslong you do not modify diablo 2 like loader did, you wouldn't be banned.
