Hellgate London

Maybe this belongs off-topic, but I'd really rather have some classic DII input as I really don't care what LODers have to say (they are a different breed, eh?).

For those of you who are unaware, most of the original DII team left Blizzard and founded Flagship Studios. They've been working on a game called Hellgate London and it looks pretty badass. Is anyone else feeling optimistic about this game? and if not, What games are you looking forward to?

I am looking forward to HG: L, which is kind of strange, as I've played DII almost exclusively for the past three years (a few hours playing Counterstrike so I wouldn't screw up too bad at LANs). It's very rare that I look forward to new games, as I'm skeptical of most of the crap out there, but I have confidence that the DII team wouldn't let me down.

This may be the game that breaks my relationship with DII, which I figured would last until DIII. I guess it remains to be seen, but I do need to invest a little bit in my machine to get up to par for a brand new game such as HG: L or DIII.

Diablo is still fun, and when it isen't I think Ill be done with gaming for the most part. It just isn't as fun as it used to be. Haven't heard of Hellgate .London is it a RPG?

I agree with you. I'm still amazed how popular the game remains. Well, not really, it's a great game. Sometimes I thought that it'd be the only game I ever play, but I think if anyone can put out a solid game it's the guys who made DII. Hellgate London is an RPG, similar in a lot of ways to DII and some MMORPGs. Actually, I was just reading it also got the best RPG award at E3, edging out the WoW expansion among others.

A lot of the gameplay should feel familar to DII players, however it offers 1st person and 3rd person viewpoints. You collect items, armor, weapons, etc; it does have guns and sometimes it will feel like a FPS. Maybe a quick way to explain it would be a cross between a FPS and a more traditional RPG like Diablo. I think it's got great potential from the little bit I've read and seen. You also have skills, stat points to distribute, and other aspects of an RPG.

All in all it looks to be an impressive game from an impressive team of programmers.

You know Ive never even tried the diablo expansion. Im at a time in my life where learning new video games is the most unappealing thing I could do..

Wow... You seriously havn't ever tried it? That's a bit odd.

I will buy Hellgate when it comes out. It really sounds like D2 but with guns. It looks like a very cool game. Speaking of playing other games, but coming back to D2, I recently did just that. I made a deal with my kids that I would give up D2 for lent. So, there is 6 weeks with no D2. I bought Oblivion during that time and started playing it. It is an amazing game. But I missed D2 and have now been playing it exclusively again for the last couple of weeks. I think I will be playing D2 forever. I wonder if I will give it up for D3?

I played D2 when it came out and stopped playing before the expansion. After a few years of no D2 I came back to it and got major recommendations by friends not to bother. Meh, to each his own

Hi DougDaddy. I've played a number of other games before and since D1. The ones that were billed as "diablo-like" by friends and the gamer mags are: Dungeon Siege, Guild Wars, and soon: Hellgate London. Several of these are by former Blizzard employees, but somewhere I think I read that GW was by former Blizz guys who were NOT all that heavily involved in the formation of D2. DS was ok, but didn't really take off that well. I have posted here at these forums extensive reviews of this particular game and where it fell short of the D2 standard.

GW: the jury is still out for me on this game. It just doesnt seem to have the in game feel of a vigorous community such as ppl coming and going and msgs from friends. You cant join a game in progress, and its half pvp or gvg anyways. And it has a charlvl 20 cap (sucks!).

This Hellgate game, somewhere I thought I read that it is the first non-Blizzard diablo-like game by the folks who actually helped to create in a major way D2. True? Now I read that a lot of the peeps who were working on D3 left Blizzard North and decided not to go down to Irvine, CA. Where are they?

I've played LoD since when it came out, been playing it a few hours here and there this past week, but it gets sooo boring. I created a chaos game(so that i could do something besides baal) and purposefully set the lvl req at 70+ to purge those nauseating rushers. I had to kill diablo alone, no one would join, although afterwards, over the next hour, 4 other ppl joined and I had to tell them diablo was dead and no plans for a next game. People are just too damn greedy in this game, you help them lvl up and they claw fiercely for the drops. And just look at those games: baals, trade games, weird name games, early hell quests, no game names that suggest "Come here to a late hell game, have fun, share loot, get exp, no bots". Bots and maphack are back there now, mh here in classic too.

Item worship for the shopping mall crowd hasnt hypnotized us all here in classic. Blizzard depends heavily on this now for its d2 patches, such as in 1.11.

IMO SC:BW>D2, as I always keep going back to that game dunno why . We'll have to wait and see the Hellgate.

SC:BW ?
Soft Core : Baal West ?

Meaning Softcore LoD on the West realm ?

Got to enjoy people using ambigious abbriviations which are common for them alone. Gives the reader the artistic liberty to read what he or she wants. ;)

Hi Fearless. Yes it's true that a large group of the DII team left Blizz to form Flagship Studios. This is taken from flagshipstudios.com:

"Flagship Studios is a creator of innovative entertainment software, designing games that focus on ease of play, replayablility and fun. The studio was formed in 2003 by former executives and developers from Blizzard North? and represents the creators of the worldwide, best-selling Diablo? franchise. With members that are renowned within the gaming industry, Flagship Studios embodies a team that has worked together for over a decade and have numerous #1-selling games and multiple Game of the Year awards to their credit."

I haven't heard anything about the DIII team. All I know is that it is composed largely of newbies to the Diablo franchise.

LOD was never able to capture my attention and affection. There is no variety in that game, which is odd considering classic has only 4 acts and the expansion is supposed to expand the game. Classic somehow remains the more entertaining and enjoyable version for a lot of long-time players. We will have to wait and see what DIII has in store for us serious gamers...

Our network, LoadedInc, has a Hellgate site here:

http://hellgate.loadedinc.com/

Run by our very own Flux, he is already hooked on Hellgate. I will probably try it and see. I have doubts that anything can hook me like D2 did. Oblivion is trying hard...

What I thought was odd was that in 1.10(correct?) they repopulated actV with monsters from the previous acts. This took alot of the uniqueness out of this act. The reasoning was, that high level ppl who concentrated in actV would like to see some variety. Most visits to that act were for essential quests, Baal runs, boss mf runs, and early in 1.08 Bloody Foothills runs for exp. As everyone knows, it was discovered within a few months that cows gave exp commensurate with their difficulty, even tho they were act1 monsters. So peeps stopped doing Bloody Foothill runs. Then with the nerfing of cow lvl in 1.10, Blizz wanted to beef up actV for the former cow peeps.

And believe u me, when the act1-2 skellies started taking over Bloody Foothills, all runs thru them stopped. Unique? Yes, for a few times thru. But then u started looking at the exp bar. If u were a hi lvl char, why would u want to plow thru there? I liked the monsters in actV LoD. Seeing those act1-2 monsters EVERY TIME u went to find the ancients was quite boring. After the 1st time u don't get any exp at all from ancients, and why bother if u dont even get any exp on the way to Arreat Summit? This repopulating of ActV was a failure, it should have been an occasional treat.

In the past few months, one of the big run games are chaos runs. LOL, but they are chock full of greedy grabby low lvls many of whom I suspect used classic to get there and then converted. Apparently these guys cant get thru ancients to Baal until they are lvl 60, so they use cs runs to lvl up. It's boring playing with ppl who just stand around and cant do anything to help, and very irritating when they only have their hands on the 'alt' key...

looks like a cool game but how do both guns and swords work together in the same environment.. i remember learning about WWI and that scenario didn't play out great for the guys who came out swinging.

The bad guys are demons/monsters, not other gun carriers. They may have some type of long range attacks but typically I bet you can safely get into close range. Although there most likely will be a pvp element to the game, just think of it as amazon vs character without projectiles, they somehow manage :)

i wondered that too...i had my hopes dashed for a zon/rogue type character...apparently they think that bows are too outdated...this is a game set in the future....future? why the swords and thumping sticks then?
