Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Guardian Cleglaw
Level 84 Cleglaw Set wielding Paladin
[/highlight]

Howdy all! Just introducing a Set-Wielding Paladin. I have wanted to use Cleglaw's Set for a Guardian (and have attempted it with much lesser gear,) and am announcing that he has defeated the Prime Evils in combat. The Cleglaw's Set has some very interesting enchantments: Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, somewhat scaling damage and AR, Slows Target and Knockback. The counter is a lack of resists, and lack of damage compared with high-end rares, uniques and runewords, as well as three valuable slots for said high-end gear. So, let's see how he went.

Findings and Opinion

I've always found the Cleglaw's Set interesting. It has some very strong bonuses. Scaling damage and AR, as well as 30% Bonus to AR, allows you to quest with this set, keeping your damage relatively strong against later demons. Cleglaw's Set also has a high percentage Deadly Strike and Crushing Blow, and a very fast weapon speed to capitalise on the damage. In addition, Slows Target and Knockback from the gloves adds some safety. Since Cleglaw is not the fastest killer, relying on quick attacks doing less damage, this isn't always a bad thing.

On the other hand, the Shield is a small sheet of metal. It does nothing. It isn't even a good shield to block with! With the full set, it adds 15% Resist all, with is pathetic compared to the great Herald of Zakarum. Or the great 3x Perfect Diamond Shield. Sure, the 75% reduction in Poison damage length is useful against bugged poison damage (Radament/Coldworm/Achmel the Cursed,) but that's why Paladin's have Cleansing. And what other character would Cleglaw have been?

With such a fast, low physical damage weapon, (with a minimum damage of 3,) Cleglaw must've been a warrior that benefitted from this speed. Thus, Cleglaw was a Fanatic Zealot. Cleglaw's Set was definitely enchanted with some powerful combinations. But the scaling damage is not enough to make a solid killer. Without extra high-end enchantments, Cleglaw's alone will make defeating the Prime Evils a slow and tedious process. Alone, the shield is no better than a sheet of metal, while the sword is of lesser quality than a plank of wood swung very, very fast.

I have tried a Cleglaw's Set Paladin a few times, without the high quality gear here, and each has fallen previously. They surely would have been possible, but no where near the safety that this incarnation of Cleglaw has.

The Build

Cleglaw is a standard Fanatic Zealot. 20 to Sacrifice, Zeal, Fanatacism and Holy Shield. Walk up to mobs, and Zeal away. Enough life leach/mana leach to continue without danger. With the DS, CB, Slows Target, and speed, this provides decent killing speed and safety.

The mercenary was of course a Might Enchanted desert merc, to enhance his damage output. There's not much else to say.

Damage-wise, with Fanaticism, Might, Fortitude etc, the LCS puts Cleglaw's Set at a respectable 167 - 2178. Plus a high percentage of Deadly Strike 334 - 4356. Plus add in OW, small amounts of elemental, Crushing Blow. All at 4FPA.

The Items

Items were chosen to improve damage output, CB/DS, skills, and resists.

Fortitude, String of Ears and Gore Riders: Fairly standard melee based setup. Damage, life leach, crushing blow, open wounds, deadly strike, damage reduction, and some resists.
Highlord's Amulet: I was tossing up between The Cat's Eye, and Highlords, but Highlord's puts me at ~90% Deadly Strike. I'm not sure if it is additive, but if so, that means I pretty much double my damage every time. Did I mention Cleglaw's speed? 4FPA. A very nice boost. Highlord's also maxxed Lightning Resist at 80%, but the Cat's Eye's FR/W would've been nice.
Ravenfrost and Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band: Fairly standard. CBF, AR, Dex, Life leach.

And the Demon Circlet Coronet! What a beauty of a helm! I think I've used it once before, or at least wanted to, but what a delight. Two skills, FR/W, Life leach, perfect (20%) resist all and some added damage reduction. Add in a Scintillating Jewel (13%) and definitely a winning combination for a melee based Paladin. What else to say?

Call to Arms on Switch. I still don't really like it after solid use with a few previous Guardians. It still runs out quickly, and simply, has never been required. The added life is merely an added buffer that does not need to be there. That said, I am getting used to it, and I am beginning the like having some extra safety, even if it's not needed. It is a lot easier to keep up, now that I'm in the habit of swapping weapons just to cast it again after each battle.

Mercenary items: Eth Obedience Cryptic Axe, Eth Treachery Archon Plate, Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest. Definitely a powerful combination.

Questing

Normal was normal. Cleglaw's Set is great during Normal, and few troubles were had. Normal was completed completely at /players 8.

Nightmare offered a few NDE's. Nightmare was definitely the most dangerous difficulty. I can't recall what they all were, but I know he got into a bit of trouble here. Cleglaw did use an Iceblink for the Freezes Target enchantment, which is a godly mod in Nightmare. He just froze and shattered everything that got too close. Despite this, he still managed to get into some trouble. Nightmare was completed completely at /players 8.

Hell was surprisingly easy. Fully equipped and entering Hell at ~Lvl 75, he had a huge amount of Life Leach, good AR, a fast attack speed (...) and ran into no trouble. That, and with his CtA/Lidless Wall switch, he had 1595 life, 75% Block, and high-max resist all. As long as he was Zealing, nothing could hurt him, and those that did, didn't hit fast enough to stop his leaching. There were slow battles against PhI (some he skipped, but others he wittled their life down with Zeal, Smite and OW/small amounts of elemental damage.) Hell was completed (including Baal, his minions, The Ancients and the Cows) at /players 3.

Diablo was a fast fight, where Cleglaw tanked everything.
The Ancients were taken on at the same time. I can't recall how this fight went, but they must've had good rolls, as Cleglaw camped in the corner (preventing the Whirlwinder from WW'ing completely,) and took them down.
The Minions of Destruction were divided into smaller groups, although Lister himself (I gave it a good shot!) had to be parked.
Baal was mostly bugged by Cleglaw's Slows Target enchantment, doing very little damage.

Overall and Conclusion

Overall, not the fastest killer, not the most fun, but definitely a bonus for using Cleglaw's Set over Dracul's, Oath Zerker and HoZ. His attack speed was a sight to behold. Very fast, and with the Fortitude, still decent damage. Also, a very safe character, with 18% Life Leach being applied at a rediculous pace. His Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, and Slows Target are extremely valuable in boss fights, while the Knockback was valued against the Cows.

Thanks for reading, and questions, comments, TL:DR's welcome.
Cheers,
~Dryst

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Nice job Drystan. Love to read Guardian threads as they always give special insights to the game. Clegs would not be my first choice of set items for finishing the game but there ya go. How long did this journey take you? And why do you think NM was more difficult than Hell level? Player settings?

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Bravo, Bravo.
images

Just so you see it again:D Google'd "belgarians" and they were one of the first

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

*slow clap*

Besides the crappy set, that's some nice gear :)

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Nice way to make a special guardian. Well done! Now do the other sets :p.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Congrats on the Guardian! You didn't want to socket anything in the sword to add some elemental damage?

I'm currently trying to finish up a classic equivalent (Frost instead of Fanatic) using the set. It's great the see the old classic sets can still see some usage even in LoD.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Congrats Drystan, impressive Guardian You have there, it could be even more impressive with single pass untwinck rule, i thought about this idea some time ago...But who am i to say something like that, i've not finished even one during last two years (though i have couple of characters in progress :-) )

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

awe, here i was thinking it'd be a pally made using nothing but sets. anyway, nice job on the Guardian, did you find yourself annoyed at the KB while zealing? specifically i'd think that single targets would be annoying.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Amazing! I suppose this isn't viable with any other class due to the low block of the shield?
I think an eld rune will increase the blocking, but you put a pdiamond there, thats good too.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

@Dave: It didn't take too long. Normal with the scaling damage/CB for bosses is definitely solid. Nightmare, the damage was still adequate damage, but I did have to be more cautious. Cursed, some elemental damage. He wasn't properly equipped, so was lacking in some areas. Hell, with all that gear thrown on, Cleglaw had few weak points, and was just a matter of running through. I was surprised at how fast Diablo fell though.
That is potentially why NM was harder than Hell. It was the development, before he had everything on.

@Woodenmind: I did want to, but it had to be where safety was lacking. AR, leach or something. I don't believe a little more elemental damage would do anything, and I considered an ED/Min/Max jewel, depending on what I had, but I believe the ED% doesn't get applied to the max damage, including the +105 Max Damage from Cleglaws. Life leach and AR weren't lacking, resists were fine, so I didn't know what to throw in.
Good luck with your classic Cleglawadin! Love to know more about him. SC/HC, why Holy Freeze, current stats/level etc? Please let me know how he goes.

@RIP: Any future Guardian is to be Single Pass, Untwinked and under tournament rules. I've got enough Guardians (quite literally,) and have probably done the majority of builds. That, plus with Forti, Oath zerkers, CtA, Infinity, it really becomes quite a lot easier. The past few Guardians which I've used them have really been too strong, too safe. With that gear all together, PvM becomes too straight forward, and any build is easy.
I've always been of the mind-set that any build is practically possible with enough patience/skill. The high/end game equipment makes any build easy, as Infinity alone knocks out enemy resistance problems, some immunities, and physical damage attack rating problems. Now throw on CtA for an extra 700+ life, and Forti for massive damage. While it's nice finally owning some of them, it's also made it too simple. There's no "what gear should I use now!?!" or tossing up between items/survival over MF.

@DeadMan: It wasn't too bad. Normally it knocked them into the one behind, so they didn't actually get knocked back. For individuals and things like archers that run away, yes, but the damage was enough to keep progressing smoothly.

@zaph: With Infinity+gear on the merc, I imagine any other character could use Cleglaw's Set. Just they wouldn't go the blocking route, and would have probably an extra 700-1000 life from CtA, on top of their 1200+ base. Definitely enough to survive on. It's just Cleglaw's screams Paladin. Low damage weapon, but extremely fast. If it weren't for the shield, a Frenzy barb dual wielding could also get the speed. Furywolf would as well, since they're based on the same basic format: HoW would probably make the +attack speed required to get max FPS.

Cheers again,
~Dryst

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Nice work. Any Bowazon player loves Cleglaws Pincers. Awesome twinking gloves, and quite capable of filling an end game slot. Nice to see someone put the full set to effective use. One of my fervant hopes for D3 is that they make items sets far more useful, as I love the concept, and wished D2 hadn't made such a general hash of it.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

*claps hands*

kudos for taking the Ancients at the same time
that coronet is amazing - i found out i ended up with tal's with all my melee chars so far but that helm easily beats it. And I'm jealous of your Raven frost roll.

i did also experience surprisingly fast diablo fights as well with my avenger. (bug there somehow with pallys?).

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Nicely done

Good gear choices for sure. maybe I would have put a @all jewel in the weapon and an eld in the shield

Why no spirit shield on switch?

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

It wasn't a bug with Diablo. It was the Crushing Blow applied quickly. Possibly the same for you?

Really good idea, kestegs, with the jewel in weapon and eld in the shield. I think I have another Scintillating jewel in my stashes, but I didn't even think of that.

Spirit: May not've crossed my mind, but I would've had to invest another 43 into Strength (I have an Eth Spirit Monarch.) 43 points in Str vs Vit, for one extra skill point. I'm not sure which would be more efficient, but I think Lidless would be. As said, I probably didn't consider it though.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Yeah 43Vit vs one level more in BO, the first wins probably (I'd have to add Paladins in my calculator to check).

Grats on the Guardian! Nice write-up and a great read :D

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

You're a paladin! Put it in a low requirement paladin shield, you don't need a spirit monarch.

Re: Guardian Cleglaw - the Set Wielding Paladin

Hey Mislan. Thankyou.

It was said under "The Build."
"The mercenary was of course a Might Enchanted desert merc, to enhance his damage output. "
He was a very straight forward build really, and didn't need any of the other merc options.

Cheers,
~Dryst
