Grandfather for Range 5 WW barb?

I found a grandfather and was wondering how good it is now in 1.12? Is it better than using a non-eth tombreaver. It's just a lol character to mess around it, so not going to spend much on it like a ebotd warpike.

( It lacks IAS which concerns me with WW )

Re: Grandfather for Range 5 WW barb?

The Grandfather Colossus Blade is a weapon with rangeadder 2 (according to Weapons.txt), giving it range 3-5 against Size 1-3 units. The ranges given by the Arreat Summit are accurate against Size 1 units (Sand Maggot Eggs, Mummy Sarcophagi, Flying Scimitars, Bone Prisons and Lightning Spires according to MonStats2.txt), which isn't particularly helpful when the vast majority of units are Size 2 and 3.

Tomb Reaver Cryptic Axe is a weapon with rangeadder 3, giving it range 4-6 against Size 1-3 units.

Re: Grandfather for Range 5 WW barb?

Contrary to the impression given by the Arreat Summit, a player's mêlée range isn't fixed but varies depending on the rangeadder of the weapon and the size of the target. Rangeadder is a column in Weapons.txt, and is typically the Arreat Summit's range - 1 i.e. weapons the Arreat Summit describes as range 1 have rangeadder 0, range 2 have rangeadder 1, etc. However, as you might expect the Arreat Summit still isn't entirely accurate e.g. Legendary Mallets are described as range 1 when they have rangeadder 1, although both War and Battle Hammers (the Normal and Exceptional versions) are described as range 1 and have rangeadder 0.

The size of the target is determined by the SizeX and SizeY columns of MonStats2.txt: all monsters are Size 1, 2 or 3. Size 1 monsters occupy 1 sub-tile, Size 2 monsters occupy 5 sub-tiles and Size 3 monsters occupy 13 sub-tiles, as shown in the following image (posted in my gallery on this site):

However, as far as mêlée attacks are concerned the target is only the central sub-tile, and a target will only be attacked if its central sub-tile is within range. For players, range = rangeadder + Size, so rangeadder 0-4 weapons will have range 1-7 against Size 1-3 targets. The sub-tiles that can be targeted at various ranges if occupied are displayed in the following image:

The mêlée range of hirelings and pets depends on their entry in the MeleeRng column of MonStats2.txt and the size of the target (range = MeleeRng + Size), so the rangeadder of the weapons equipped has no effect; that of monsters also depends on their entry in the MeleeRng column of MonStats2.txt and their own size (range = MeleeRng + Size). The mêlée range of hirelings, pets and monsters is also their awareness range when blinded.

I started investigating this back in late September last year and compiled a page for the Amazon Basin's Diablo II Wiki. Unfortunately that's off-line at the moment, otherwise I could add the contents to the Diablo Wiki as well (since this doesn't seem to be widely known). I'm unable to verify how a player's mêlée range is determined against other players (I don't play on-line), but if it's consistent with how it's determined against monsters then the fact that players are Size 2 could have some interesting implications...
