Duping - does it still exist?

A while back I traded 3 Guls for a Ber. As of right now, I can't find my Ber anywhere. The only thing I can think of is either I dropped it without realizing it or it was a dupe.

Does duping still exist? And if it does, is there anyway I can protect myself from falling for it again?

Yes, and no. Don't trade for high runes unless you're willing to take that risk. I lost two Lo runes I traded for online yesterday. *poof*

Such is life on Bnet, I'm afraid.

im pretty sure there will always be some sort of duping exploit out there as long as bnet exists. The only way to completely avoid coming into contact with duped gear is to not trade at all, but then why not play SP? Realistically there are a few precautions you can take.
-avoid trading with suspicious people, this is one of those "gut" things where you just have to go on instinct
-If a deal is too good to be true, it often is.
-Ask your trusted friends first if they have what you need before you go out into the dupe-ridden market. Sometimes you get lucky and they not only have what you're looking for, they are willing to give you a deal on it.

And you're forgetting the trade forums here, most people find or cube the runes themselves.

Large scale public duping seems to be over, although there is a reasonable chance that private duping by item shops and such is still around. If you want to avoid dupes, you could always try out Ladder once season 3 rolls around. Season 2 was corrupted by that mistake Blizz made fairly early into the season where NL items made it to L.

LMFAO no they don't. Just because someone trades here doesn't mean they don't trade with people on battle.net. Lots of people that trade here trade on other forums, and in channels. You people seem to think that this forum exists on it's own realm, which it doesn't.

You can assume though that if someone with a good reputation here offers a selffound rune, it has a very good chance to be true. But most of the time (90%) people will admit to have gotten their runes from Bnet, or from a friend who got it elsewhere.

I can vouch for that. I traded someone here for a Jah rune, and I purposely let it sit around for awhile on my sorc, and it never left me after 2 months.

First, I'm going to say that I trade in the USEast Ladder forums quite often, and I've met only honest, straightforward people in doing so. I've drop traded with several and muled while they held games for me and vice versa.

However, in the many trades I've either made or seen posted, I don't think I've ever had the origin of the runes be part of the discussion. If I were lucky enough to find a perfect Maras, for instance, I would expect to get several ists for it. I don't think I would ask the buyer if he personally found or cubed them all, because in all likelyhood, he didn't. Is that going to make me trade it to the guy who offers 3 and swears he found them all rather than the guy that offers 5 and traded for some? No. I'm going to trade it for 5 and take the same chance he did that they don't disappear. And more than that, I'm going to trade one for a HoZ, and whoever gets it is going to be taking the same chance again. It is sad that the chance the ist is a dupe is part of the trade, but it is a part of life on bnet.

And back to the original post: there are threads in these forums about items vanishing everyday, including one about 2 posts down from yours as I write this, and one I was going to link to but can't find reguarding 3/20/20s poofing (probably deleted.) I doubt all of those items have been held in storage since the latest dupe-proofing, so I'm going to assume that dupers are alive and well, if not as numerous as before.

sadly, yes, dupe is everwhere around the corner.

sad.......
