Anyone else have problems with D2 after installing Windows Service Pack 2?

Anyone else have problems with D2 after installing Windows Service Pack 2?

I downloaded and installed Windows SP2 last night and now every time i try to play Diablo 2 i get some funky error. Does anyone else know what Im talking about? Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it??

Thanks in Advance.

Can't speak for Diablo specifically.... but a lot of people have reported all sorts of problems after installing SP2 for XP. I remember reading an article that Microsoft wasn't even gonna charge people to unscrew what they screwed up this time because it was so widespread.

I havent found any other problems with any other programs yet...just the Diablo 2. You think it would help if I uninstalled and re-installed D2? If i did that would i lose all my accounts?

You will loose any non battlenet accounts if you re-install D2X unless you back up your saved character folder, I will have to check where that is if you cant find it.

I have installed Service pack 2, and no problems with D2X

Maybe its a conflict with your video card? (was it like weird graphics, or just a windows error?) I would download the latest drivers off the internet for your modem, video card, and any other hardware that you might have.

Then re-boot to see if that helped.

that would be good :)

If its a missing file error, its probably fixable.

If its another type of error, it may be harder to fix.

did the game load up any graphics at all? The most common problems are always with your video card, the old drivers might not be compatable with the latest version of service pack 2, as I think there were some new Direct X drivers on there.

Cool, would be good to read that error message then we can take it from there.

Do any other games run? Particually ones that require 3D accleration?

If i remember correctly it was an assertion failure. I double click on the LOD icon on my desktop and it starts to load. The screen goes black and the game doesnt load. I have to shift+tab back to the desktop and the error box is there. Ill get home in about an hour and see what it says and post it here.

As far as any other games running....i wouldnt know. I dont play any other games. :D

Assertion error.. hmm that sounds nasty, probably out of my depth on that one, but if ya post it I can quickly check some info and c if there are any recomendations :)

ok heres what i got....

Assertion Failure
Location : D2Direct3D\Src\d3dTextureCache.cpp, line #90
Expression : tCache->nMaxNumItems

I have NO idea what it is and I have NEVER seen this before until now.

That is definately some type of video card failure.

Best way to test it is to run another game that is 3D intensive, and you will probably find that you get the same type of error.

D2Direct3D is a software driver.

It appears that Windows XP Service Pack 2 allocates memory , namely texture memory differently in the service pack.

what video card do u have?

If you are not sure which video card you have, you can do one of two things

Click Start
Select Control Panel

Control panel will be in one of 2 modes, either category mode, or Classic mode

If its in category mode, then it will display about 6 icons, if its in classic mode it will display about 20 icons.

If its in Category mode, click the button on the left that says "switch to classic view"

Double click on display

It should have the tabs

General / Adaptor / Monitor Troubleshoot / Colour management / *Your video card* /

in this tab the manufacturer sometimes has a direct link to their website, if so click on it and download the new drivers.

if not then you will have to go their manually.

if you have any probs with this let me know what card it is and I will point u in the right direction for drivers :)

OK....anything else? I downloaded, ran, and installed.....

BTW you are my new best friend. Thank you for all youve done for me.
LOL
Hey, I just hope it works first!!

once installed u will likely have to restart windows.

Only other prob, is that maybe your video card company hasnt updated their drivers for service pack 2 ... I just hope they have.

If it all doesnt work, we will have to try some other options.

it crashed at the start of the install...ill reboot and try again

I dont think there will b an easy fix for this, you will probably have to try a few things if the install doesnt work.

the next thing you can do is go back to control panel, '
Double click on System
Click on Hardware Tab
Click on Display adaptors
Click on Your adaptor ( It will b someting Like s3 .... )

Click the resources tab

are there any conflicts? It will say down the bottom.
I

let me know how that goes.

Do u have all your original cds for your video card?

Ok i rebooted and tried the install again with no luck....ill try your last post now....brb..

do you have yahoo messenger??? it may be a little easier to exchange messages
