Intro
With partial inspiration by zgpmf's "untwinked" 99 Sorceress, a HC 99 hammerdin I did on Battle.net with a team as well as the legendary 99's of the SPF such as Grogs' Ayla, jjscud's ShieldMaiden and Ugla's Azalea - I present to you a 6th generation hammerdin and my first and only SP character to make it to 99.

History
A new beginning
I began with a Sorceress the weekend the first matches of "The International 2" started knowing I would be spending a lot of time in front of the PC watching that in the following week. I started off in 1.13d vanilla to make things challenging initially, as the Spirit runeword is simply too ridiculous for untwinked play in my eyes.
I reached the end of nightmare on that first night and decided to do a few NM Andariel runs to get a few basics that could help my survival for Hell. Upon reaching Hell I went straight towards LK as it was the safest and fastest way to get the runes for Call to Arms, a much-needed runeword for survival as well as life/resistance charms. This time I made sure to kill the council right away so as to get another "deeds" from Zakarumite packs as had been the fate of a previous Sorceress. I also made sure that my LK map didn't have any tendency to spawn monsters let alone bosspacks inside the huts.
It didn't take long before 1.13 provided, however I still lacked a suitable base weapon and an Ist rune so I continued. A few hours later I landed a Vex and quickly made Heart of the Oak which replaced my random rare orb with +1 sorc/20 FCR/?. I kept on running as I insisted on getting a Crystal Sword for the CtA because it is the easiest one to distinguish from your main weapon slot; I didn't want to lose a character due to low resistances on the wrong weapon slot.
Later that day another Ohm dropped but the Crystal Sword was still missing. It eventually dropped on the following day and although I had a second Ohm handy I was relieved when it rolled +6 BO.
I began running Hell Andariel hoping for a Harlequin Crest, Gheeds and some mercenary equipment. I got Gheed's a plenty but the Shako took a while so I impatiently began running AT on p1 sporting a 3 PTopaz mask, Rhyme and a few other things totalling less than 200% MF. The char kept improving in the following days, Andariel eventually gave up the Shako and a Tal-Rasha amulet so I moved on from her for good. Eventually AT dropped the plate as well amongst other things; most noteably a Death's Fathom which I failed to screenshot because I thought it was a rare (I was messing with the gamma/contrast settings at the time.) Luckily I picked it up however!.
I soon began to think about making another hammerdin to run the CS, but I had yet to find the runes for Enigma. I didn't want to run LK and rely on cubing Ber runes to get a Jah so I decided to give Travincal a shot.
It seemed too risky for the Sorceress and I went back to AT hoping for a Stormshield. I wanted to give CS a go but I knew that I needed a Stormshield to make it reasonably safe. I didn't want to waste time running Mephisto for it so I stuck to AT and ended up reaching level 94 through p1 runs before one finally dropped.
With a quick respec and a few equipment parts changed I was ready to attempt /players7 CS runs hoping for some runes. Runs were shaky as I had to be quite cautious while consuming a lot of potions. Soon after - at level 94.4 - I decided that this wasn't the way to go about finding those runes because the runs were somewhat slow, risky and dealing with the cold immune Seis was very difficult on hardcore with a mediocre might merc.
Birth of a Paladin
I decided to get started on the Paladin knowing it was a much sturdier character for Travincal running. I started another Sorceress along with it knowing I might need another LK runner, as I was too fond of the AT map I had rolled on the first one. I self-MP'ed to progress through normal and nightmare faster but also to save the NM Ancient quest for later use. Within a day the two characters were on Hell difficulty and speed-leveling of the Paladin in nm and hell Stony Field soon commenced.
I went back to running Hell Andariel for a Rising Sun amulet knowing it would make the paladin completely fire-proof, conviction hydras or not. It would come in handy for the CS as well.
This is what his stats looked like when Travincal runs really kicked off that friday. That weekend provided an Ohm and a couple of Lo runes, not what I was hoping for but welcome never the less. Runs were in the 35-40 second range with Charge and TP'ing back to Act 4.
The following monday evening finally delivered some of the goods I was looking for. I realized with cubing I was only a Sur short of having the runes for Enigma and decided I would give LK a try the next evening if Travincal didn't deliver. The next evening I rolled a reasonable LK map and started running, emphasizing on the bugged chests only. Within 10 runs a Sur dropped. I laughed and spammed IRC. Having only done so few LK runs I decided to give it another hour or something hoping that I wouldn't have to cube all Ohm's and Lo runes. 8 minutes later another Sur dropped and I was done running LK. GG 1.13!
That same night I cubed the runes and made the Enigma. The paladin was respecced and this is what he looked like for his first CS run. I was hoping to get started sooner so as to have more items to search for while CS running. The only thing lacking at this point was a +skill ring, a decent Sacred Targe for Spirit and an improvement in charms and the FCR ring. I only had one Lion Branded HC at the time. I used a 40 allres 'Spirit' Sacred Rondanche which meant I needed 109 strength with equipment. Since I was using Rising Sun any way and I needed to find that SoJ or BKWB I put on War Travelers for some additional MF. Combined with the perfect topaz in the shako and a gheed's I was sitting at about 253 MF.
Running Chaos Sanctuary
My strategy changed for the different stages based on what I think is optimal for experience gain with a hammerdin.
Prior to hitting 96 I was skipping Diablo entirely, simply running bosspacks and popping the seals for additional drops with /p8, run times varies from 2-3 minutes probably.
From 96 to 97 I still emphasized clearing many bosspacks but also started doing Diablo, run times were probably a bit over 2 minutes mostly.
From 97 to 98 I began to ignore bosspacks unless they were stacked/favorable (undead). I had rolled a map that had a few shrines as well as a stacked Infector wing with favorable layouts for all three wings. Pretty much the ideal for me for that level, times were in the 1:30-1:45 range.
For the final level I rerolled maps again hoping for one that featured more shrines, similar to what I have shown with 'Noble'. I eventually got tired of rolling maps and settled on a map that had four stable random shrines from the RoF wp to Diablo as well as two shrines right next to the Travincal wp. The idea was that less time "wasted" checking shrines in Act 1 per run could hopefully be nearly as efficient as having higher chance of getting one per run.
Checking Travincal for shrines before beginning the CS run however often led to me not remembering whether or not I had an ES which every now and then led to me wasting a trip to Act 3 or finishing off Diablo without taking one. I decided to stick /p7 for the full duration of the run as seals provided 10-16k depending on number of minions killed compared to ~2k on /p1. From the brief testing I did it seemed to be a pretty small difference in exp. efficiency while /p7 obviously is much better for drops.
I ended up averaging about 21 minutes per million of exp. With NM and Hell Ancients that put me at ~80 hours from 98 to 99 which is faster than most and much faster than the slower baalrunners.
I still only had three Lion Branded GC's upon hitting 98 and decided to switch from Rising Sun+War Travelers to Mara's+Hotspur to boost my damage to 10k and re-socket my Harlequin Crest with a 'Ber' for an additional 8% DR.
It wasn't until sometime during the final level that CS finally provided me with the first 30+ all-res Sacred Targe which I quickly rolled to a 35 FCR Spirit. It took until level 98.4 before one of the skill rings finally dropped for me.
Near death experiences
There were a few every now and then, especially during Travincal runs when I was bold enough to fight (dual) aura packs while amped. In CS they mostly occured when I didn't position myself carefully against aura/amp combinations and the extra fast De Seis' pack. I only remember one or two during 98 even though my tactics had become more aggressive against De Seis. The last one I had was just a few days ago when I positioned myself carelessly in the middle of a might-enchanted Infector pack while amped. I dropped below 1000 hp in an instant but luckily my potion-reflexes still worked fine.

Getting to level 99 was a goal I set way back in late 2006. We were still playing v1.11 then and battle.net runewords weren't used by anyone but a dirty few. Oblivion Knights were still using Lower Resistance and Iron Maiden, making suitable build candidates even fewer.
I ended up going through three candidates through 2007 and 2008; initially a plain Blizzard sorceress which I got to 97 through MP before realizing I would have to play it solo to finish it eventually and Bonehew just wasn't my thing.
The second candidate was my 3rd hammerdin, "Patriarch Noble", whom I had made after finally landing the runes for Enigma. While Ragnarod had hinted at it, it wasn't know amongst SPF members that running the Chaos Sanctuary/Diablo was actually as fast if not faster than running Baal to level 99, hence why Grogs and Marvel hadn't pursued that path. So I continued on their path doing baalruns. Lister and his gang were annoying and killing Baal himself took ages unless you swapped on a Stormlash and smited him, another annoyance. The paladin was pretty much shelved at that point and the goal was sidelined once more.
Then at some point after having conversations on IRC with Reborn about his lightning sorceress Hera I decided I wanted to give that a try. I had already gathered most of the equipment through hundreds of hours of running Pindle, Pits, Mephisto, Baal and Cows and quickly had a very strong sorceress which quickly reached level 94. but once again I found the need to swap a wand with lower resist charges from my inventory quite an annoyance. It was around that time the runeword mod began to gain popularity and with the previous discovery of Lower Kurast bugged chests the idea of getting an Infinity polearm was tempting. I hated running LK and with the approach I had to it at the time I was probably doing 40 sec averages or some such. Add to that the first 10.000 runs did not yield what I was hoping for and the whole thing was delayed again.
I eventually got the Ber I needed somewhere around 17.000 runs IIRC and the stick was ready to be made. I could finally consider Matriarch Tempest to be complete after hundreds of hours spent collecting items. It was the most powerful character I had ever built and the most amount of effort I had put into anything related to PC games ever.
Shortly after I began doing baalruns with some other SPF players through TCP/IP and reached level ~97.5 before running out of steam. After the gargantuan effort I had put into building this character I guess I didn't have enough motivation left to continue. I didn't play much D2 for the remainder of 2009 however Blizzard had announced there would be a v1.13 so I would still follow things sporadically.
The release of the first test version of 1.13 got me back to the game in December 2009 and I ended up playing it quite a bit over the following month or two. I managed to find the only piece I had missing from a self-found grail on SC, a goal I had never actively sought out.
Additionally "Noble" the hammerdin managed to reach level 98 doing CS runs while testing the new patch(es). However level 98 was harder than all the previous ones combined and I still hadn't regained the motivation to pursue that final goal again. With the "official" release of 1.13c in March 2010 and the ladders being reset once more I decided to give Battle.net another go without looking back.
I pretty much completely stopped paying attention to SP and the SPF and only just began checking back in regularly here since this summer. I checked in on IRC in August to find that the place was quite lively with another MFO about to start and found the spark igniting once more.
